THS’ iConnect to rescue reading gaps

To implement Tarlac City Schools Division’s Project RESCUE (Recovery and Engagement of Struggling Readers Through Curriculum Updates and Explicit Instruction), Tibag High School (THS) has started addressing the learning losses of students especially in reading and just recently, THS has skyrocketed its project iConnect, which aims to help students become better readers through various campus and off-campus literacy activities. school. She even elaborated that this project intends to level up the proficiency level of students in reading since it is a springboard for all their other academic activities.
“The project was first approved by the regional office in 2019, but since the pandemic has hit many sectors, including the education sector, it was not pushed through.” Benjamin S. Gaspar, Head Teacher I in English, said during the campus press briefing about the school’s PPAs. He also emphasized that the project secures learning reading beyond cognition and that the activities under the said project will help students become more confident in reading by including affective and social factors in teaching.
In a separate interview, Vhan Khriziel Romin, a reading coordinator, said that the school hopes to mitigate the dilemmas in reading, especially that there are more than 40 non-readers in the

“Without the ability to read, one may fail in many things and for students, they may not continue in their studies. So we have thought about this project to support students’ recovery in learning because it has been two years since they were given proper curricular instruction” Romin added.
Romin also stated that there are four sub-programs in this project namely: #BFF, #WordBank, #FriendRequest, and #ReadTalk.

To assess graduating students’ performance and determine whether they are achieving the curriculum learning standards, Tibag High School Teaching staff led implementation of the National Achievement Test for Grade 12 students.
The said implementation is pursuant to the DepEd Memorandum No. 011 series 2023, which asked all schools operating senior high schools to conduct the said examination.
Meanwhile, an orientation was made with the supervision of THS Guidance Counselor, Ma’am Joanna Maninang. She stated that all details of the NAT were properly oriented to the students and facilitators to assure the readiness of the graduating students.
Moreover, the Grade 11 Tibag HS teachers facilitated the NAT in the different schools and only thirty (30) test takers were allowed to enter each testing room to ensure that health and safety measures will be applied.
SEAMEO Training for THS teachers highlights innovative education

20 THS teachers were chosen as division-scholars for an international webinar sponsored by NEAP SEAIETI and SEAMEO InoTe ch in February - May 2022.
Enclosed in the Division Memorandum no. 23 series of 2022 is the list of broad range of professional development programs and courses recognized by the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP), Southeast Asian Institute of Educational Training, Inc. (SEAIETI), and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization –Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO - InoTech). Wherein, the participants were oriented of the commitment to the provisions of the NEAP-recognized Professional Development Contract.
All teachers signed and agreed upon finishing the designated courses.
The primary objective is to capacitate teachers into higher order thinking skills to adequately meet the challenges of the 21st century learners in a more systematic way which they can impart to students by embedding it in their daily lessons.
“The training gave a lot of innovative teaching strategies that are at par with international standards. The online revalida challenged me to integrate HOTS in the process of planning and implementing lessons that when incorporated in our school activities will surely benefit our students here in Tibag High School.”
Mariechris David, one of the teacherscholars said.
As agreed upon on the contract, all teachers accomplished and claimed their NEAP Certified certificates.

Reg’l EPS commends THS for RDA administration, provides technical assistance on curriculum implementation

September 14, 2022 – Regional Education Program Supervisor, Dr. Rosalinda Ibarra, congratulates Tibag High School for the ‘proper’ preparation of reports and for the actions taken to address the dilemmas during the implementation of the Regional Diagnostic Assessment (RDA).
Dr. Ibarra also emphasized some points to consider when implementing certain curriculum areas focusing on inclusive education, teaching reading, and lesson planning.

Implemented every Friday, this activity seeks to deliver reading instruction through collaboration and gamification. Reading teachers, together with the parents and other advisers, prepare simple breakfast for students to enjoy while learning.
According to the Senior High School reading coordinator, Ma’am April Candelaria, who is also a reading teacher for #BFF, the activities intend to provide bigger pictures of teaching reading by lessening the anxiety of students and by heightening their interest in the said skill.

THS, City LGU partnership initiates Career Coaching for Gr. 12 studes

Tibag High School, under the supervision of its school head, Dr. Juvelyn L. Esteban and the Grade 12 Level Coordinator, Lydia Sanchez held this year’s Career and Employment Coaching Seminar for 12th Graders themselves in choosing the endeavors in students with avenues for them to enhance their language proficiency. According to Mr. Gaspar, wordbank focuses on the use of small items of the language which make up whole texts; hence, it is important to bank concrete vocabulary knowledge to students before giving them bigger tasks in reading.
With the active involvement of the concerned Local Government Unit, the head of the City Manpower Development Services Office (CMDESO) and the current manager of the Public Employment Services Office (PESO), Engr. Arnold G. Samson served as the resource speaker of the activity. The basic know-hows and the right attitude towards work were explained to the learners.
Regina Sajonia, a Grade 12 adviser said, “This coaching would help our students acquire values and competencies as a future worker. Values are very important in their future.” The orientation is the prerequisite activity of the students before their work immersion subject.
“We cannot expect students to comprehend texts if they cannot read words in the first place” Gaspar said. He also explained that this will help teachers have greater knowledge on their students’ reading level at a micro level because the activity focuses on the small items of language.

Tibag High School partners with various Local Government Units. Friend Request binds various partners in education and provides opportunities for students to learn

With the goal of spreading awareness on the rights and protection of women, Tibag High School (THS) launched the 18 - day campaign to end Violence Against Women (VAW) on November 25, 2022.
A total of 2,649 studes participated in the said campaign. Students made support for the campaign during Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts encampment through essay writing and poster making contests.
Dr. Juvelyn L. Esteban, the THS School Head, gave the details and her inspiring message to the scouters about the violence against women (VAW) campaign.
Norlan D. Agdeppa and Roberto Y. Suagart Jr., the GAD coordinators, together with other teaching staff worked hand-inhand to underscore the 18 - day campaign.

She also mentioned that the facilitation of the said assessment is commendable as she noticed that problems such as the insufficient time, length of the tests, non-readers and frustrated readers’ problems while answering the test were addressed with the right prompt, which made the provisions of the Regional and Division memoranda possible.

With the help of the community scholars and educators, THS learners will be taught how to read in a learning hub – a mini library in their local community. This hub was built by the language teachers and will be facilitated by the barangay officials.
“THS is grateful to the barangays who gave way to this advocacy. It is very hard to continue our programs without the support of the key stakeholders. That is why we are blessed to have these LGUs helping us in building a better future for our learners” Clariza Mae Guiang, HT-III, said in an interview.

ReadTalk is the official reading talk show of Tibag High School. It targets off-campus participants as it happens online via FB pages of the school publications and the DepEd Tayo –Tibag High School.
Program Specialist for Evaluation and Monitoring, Dr. Sunshine Castro, and the Education Program Specialist, Ma’am Edna Domingo, the regional EPS gave inputs on curriculum implementation. It was suggested by the monitoring team that THS should conduct Learning Action Cell Sessions on Inclusive Education focusing on Sign Language. Likewise, teaching reading was emphasized.
“Kapag hindi marunong magbasa ang bata, hindi niya matututunan ang ibang subjects” she mentioned. The regional and division offices hope to conclude this activity with proper intervention plans and facilitations for students to master the prior competencies before exiting the K-12 program.
This activity is collaborated by all English and ICT teachers as it showcases demo teaching on reading and some activities related to reading comprehension.
According to its implementers, project iConnect is still a work in progress, but it seeks sustainable reading programs and activities that students may not only enjoy, but also appreciate as they become better readers.

Math skills, financial literacy fused in THS SLM; Galang, Mangaco ranked 3rd in reg’l tilt

“It is for them to know the value of money and how to handle it at their young age.”
This was the statement of Ms. Jonah Micah M. Mangaco, a Math teacher who won 3rd place with Mr. Paul Anthony Galang in the Regional Search for the Best Integration of Financial Literacy Key Concepts in Science and Mathematics Through Self Learning Modules (SLM) on December 15, 2022.
Galang and Mangaco thought of giving it a try and as a result,

The SLM in Math 9 focuses on solving problems involving variations whilst integrating the concept of financial literacy which aims to instill financial skills among young students. Among many participants in region 3, Tibag High School (THS) bags the 3rd place home.
