Davis Tarwater: From Olympic Gold Medal Winner To Multi Unit Franchisee

DAVIS TARWATER is a franchisee of Streamline Brands, who franchise a variety of swim schools including SafeSplash + Swim Labs swim schools. Davis is a multi-unit owner of Swim Labs Swim Schools.

WHEN DID YOU EXPERIENCE A NEED TO DEVELOP YOUR SWIM EDUCATION BUSINESS?

I had a background in the sport of from a very young age. Swimming has always been a significant passion in my life. As a college athlete at the University of Michigan, I was elected team captain my senior year and was a three-

time national champion. After spending most of my twenties as a pro- athlete, my career culminated by winning a gold medal in the 4x200 freestyle relay at the London Olympics. After a brief-stint working in an asset management firm, I did a great deal of research in the markets in which I am located and found that swim lessons that were both convenient in terms of location, easy to schedule and could be conducted over an extended duration of time (rather than seasonal session-based options), were in short supply. So, after further examination, I felt that the fastest way to scale was to partner with an existing franchise organization to put a large-scale development plan in place. To that end, I have been extremely happy with the decision to go the franchise route with my partners at Streamline Brands and to offer industry leading expertise as the company has grown.

HOW LONG HAS SOUTHEASTERN SWIM SCHOOLS BEEN IN BUSINESS?

Our company, Southeastern Swim Schools, which has area rights to develop, SafeSplash + Swim Labs Swim Schools,

has been in business since 2019. In fact, we initially began teaching out of a hotel pool. However, in January of 2020, we opened our first brick and mortar location in Knoxville, TN, followed shortly by 2 more in the Nashville area. There were significant challenges during the COVID timeframe in terms of both construction and operations. However, we were able to weather that storm and are embarking on a new wave of development.

HOW MANY LOCATIONS DO YOU HAVE OPERATING AND IN WHICH AREA OF THE COUNTRY?

We have 3 locations currently open: Knoxville, TN, Franklin, TN and Nashville, TN. We are on track to open our fourth location in Simpsonville, SC this coming January.

HOW DO ADULT AND CHILD STUDENTS FIND YOU?

We employ a variety of different marketing strategies to drive traffic to our website. Through a combination of digital advertising, local partnerships and traditional local, grassroots efforts, we

have been successful in educating our communities of the fact that learning to swim is not simply a seasonal pursuit, but something that needs to be done on a more consistent basis, much like learning a new language, to develop longterm mastery of the skill.

WHAT CERTIFICATIONS DO YOUR INSTRUCTORS HAVE?

Our teachers have both traditional certifications in lifeguarding and CPR in addition to our in-house curriculum certification which takes a great deal of time, and our team takes great pride in. Additionally, we review our staff on a quarterly basis to ensure they are adhering to the highest possible level of both safety and curriculum delivery.

WHO IS YOUR COMPETITION?

Currently, the competition in the space is a little varied, but the industry in general is becoming far more consolidated with more national brands emerging and franchised operators getting into the industry. Additionally, the competitive landscape is interspersed with operators who might rent pool space, as well as YMCAs, health clubs etc. However, what we are seeing now is an interesting shift in the industry away from competing solely with YMCAs, health clubs, etc. to competing with other franchise operators from different brands.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR YOUR COMPANY OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

Over the next few years, we

hope to continue to grow in terms of units opened, as well as continue to deepen our roots in the communities in which we operate by being a good partners and exceeding expectations with the families we have the pleasure of serving. While we learned a great deal of resilience and creativity opening this business during COVID, our hope is that we see a more normalized environment moving forward that is conducive to growth. It has been a really fulfilling journey not only to see very

young children, daily, recognize a great sense of achievement, but also to create jobs and see the personal and professional development of our staff. We think the future looks bright and our team is excited for the challenges that lie ahead.

Many people want success, and only a small fraction take the necessary steps to achieve it. One of the most powerful actions you can take is writing down your goals. Yet, for many people, goal setting is an overlooked Blind Spot for getting the clarity needed for success. If you’re serious about designing your own life, goal setting is the foundation; here’s some key strategies from my book Designing Your Own Life that can help you align your values, goals, and actions for extraordinary results.

Q: Tony, you’ve mentioned you have more written goals than anyone you’ve ever met. Can you tell us about your goal-setting journey? That’s true! I have 150 pages of written goals, and goal setting has been a driving force in my life. Years ago, my coach told me there was someone who had more goals than me—Peter Thomas. Naturally, I had to meet him. I studied his goals, added some of them to my own, and eventually ended

up with more goals than him! Peter and I became best friends and even co-authored a book together, Business Ground Rules. He is also my partner in super growing Dogtopia as we pursue our original goal of making it a billion-dollar company. Every year, we meet multiple times as mastermind partners to sharpen each other’s goals and strategies. The results have been incredible.

This journey taught me the value of intentional goal setting and designing a life you love. How about you? Are you taking the time to design your life? If not, you should be.

Q: Tony, what makes goal setting so essential to success?

Goal setting isn’t just about having aspirations—it’s about creating clarity and direction in your life and your business. Writing your goals down transforms them from vague ideas into tangible targets. It’s also scientifically supported by how your brain works. The Reticular Activating System (RAS)—a

set of nerves in the back of your brain—plays a crucial role. Your RAS filters what you focus on and what you notice in your environment. When you’re clear about your goals, your RAS helps you attract opportunities and resources that align with what you want to achieve.

In Designing Your Own Life, I explain that goals should be tied to your values. Start by identifying 6 to 10 core values that matter most to you. Then, build goals around those values, and align your daily actions—particularly your High Leverage Activities (HLAs)—with those goals. This alignment ensures that you’re not just busy, you’re busy doing the right things to achieve the success you want.

Q: Tony, what are the key components of effective goal setting?

Effective goal setting has three major components, and they all work together to help you succeed:

1. WRITE IT DOWN

Writing clarifies your vision, commits your intentions, and makes your goals tangible. Plus, the act of writing engages your mind in ways that thinking alone doesn’t.

2. VISUALIZE IT

Visualization means mentally seeing yourself achieving your goals. This primes your mind for success and reinforces your belief that your goals are achievable. When you visualize, your brain starts identifying ways to make it happen.

3. SELF-TALK

Congruent self-talk is critical. Your internal dialogue needs to support your goals, not sabotage them. Positive, reinforcing self-talk aligns your mindset with your aspirations and helps overcome doubts or fears.

When all three components— writing, visualization, and selftalk—are aligned, they create a powerful synergy that drives your actions and accelerates your success.

Q: Tony,

how can someone start designing their own life?

Start by getting clear about what you truly value. Once you’ve identified your top values, write them down and use them as a foundation for setting your goals. Then, create specific, actionable goals tied to those values. Finally, break those goals into daily actions, focusing on your High Leverage Activities—those tasks that have the biggest impact on achieving your objectives.

Another tip: take time to reflect and refine your goals regularly. Peter Thomas and I do this every year during our mastermind sessions, and it

keeps us sharp and aligned with what matters most. Carve out time to review and adjust your goals periodically.

At PastaNito, fresh, high-quality pasta dishes are prepared in front of customers, combining the convenience of fast service with the authenticity of traditional cuisine. Thanks to founder Toni Calderone’s signature pasta noodle, dishes are sautéed to order and ready within minutes. To say restaurants run in Calderone’s blood is an understatement. When her grandparents emigrated from Sicily to the US in the 1950’s, they opened the first pizzeria in York, Pennsylvania. There they taught local diners how to hold a slice and nourished their passion for bringing people together around the table. Her family went on to start other pizza shops, a donut store, a grocery, and more. This entrepreneurial spirit continued through the generations, as her father

developed his own Italian restaurant concept in Florida, where Calderone grew up.

From an early age, she was engrossed in the intricacies of the restaurant business. Family conversations revolved around operational efficiency and growth opportunities. At just 14 years old, she took her first job at McDonald’s, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the workings of a successful franchise. This early exposure fueled her desire to follow in her family’s path and carve her own way in the industry.

With determination embedded in her character, Calderone honed her skills in fine dining, which led to the opening of her first restaurant: Tutoni’s, a farm-to-table fine dining establishment, in 2014. To streamline operations and improve kitchen efficiency, Calderone developed her proprietary fresh pasta noodle that cooks in just three minutes—a fraction of the typical 13-minute cooking time for dried pasta. This breakthrough innovation became the foundation for her future endeavors.

Recognizing the potential of her signature noodle, Calderone expanded her reach by launching the Riga-toni food truck in 2018. The truck operated successfully for five years, offering locals a much-needed dining option

during the pandemic and selling pasta and sauces for home cooking. The food truck bridged the gap between fine dining and a more accessible, family-friendly experience.

Building on this success, Calderone established a fast-casual dining concept called Presto Fast Italian in 2019. By leveraging the economic challenges of the pandemic, she negotiated discounted leases, allowing her to expand her business quickly and strategically. She also tested the Presto concept in a variety of store sizes and models to zero in on the ideal setup for scalability and efficiency. In 2024 in order to begin franchising, Presto Fast Italian was rebranded as PastaNito, a quick-service, build-your-own pasta concept

that encapsulates Calderone’s vision of quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

“I’ve removed all the variables of what it means to operate a restaurant and made it easy to execute the concept—no chef required,” says Calderone.

In the spring of 2003, Dom Bonvissuto was a young sports writer at the local newspaper in Nashville, Tenn. He wrote a profile on starathlete-turned-entrepreneur Will Bartholomew, who was opening his first professional training facility. Bonvissuto and Bartholomew then went their separate ways.

Twenty-one years later, that facility is the national headquarters for D1 Training .
