uman occupation of the Fraser Valley can be traced back to the retreat of the last glaciers some 15,000 years ago when the Cordilleran ice sheet began to recede and split up into smaller pieces. However, it was not until some 11,000 years ago that the land was re-shaped into its present contour and the Sumas Glacier began to feed into the Mighty Fraser River.

Since then, this river has been the core of life in the Fraser River Valley as the landscape, flora and fauna shaped itself to fit all around it. When the first humans migrated across the continent, they established themselves along this blue ribbon which had an abundant supply of salmon, seabirds, edible plants and other necessities of life. First Nations people, known as the Stó:lō or “river people”, are thought to have been the principal occupants of this region throughout the last several millennia.

These settlers were part of the Coast Salish and were the first hunters, fishers, gatherers and builders who depended on the mighty river, its tributaries and surrounding land for their survival and livelihood. Over time, they became more and more sedentary as they did not have to wander across the land to access food and shelter. Rather, they could stay right here in the valley. The first contact with Europeans was in 1808 when an explorer named Simon Fraser and his crew

began exploring the mouth of the river that would eventually bear his name. At the time, it is estimated that there were 30,000 people living within the Stó:lō territory. The First Nations continue to be an important part of all the communities. There were three key significant developments that spurred growth in this region. It began with the search for gold on the Fraser River when men and women journeyed through our region in search of the precious metal. Though only a few

found their fortune, they were the early pioneers who helped to build the roads, railways and bridges and set the stage for future development. The Old Yale Road was the first true east-west connection through the south side of the Fraser River. It was created in 1874 and paralleled the route of the Telegraph Trail of 1865. The route ran from New Westminster, in a southeasterly direction, through what is known today as Langley and proceeded on to Abbotsford and then Chilliwack. A northeasterly route then

connected Hope and Yale. Portions of the Old Yale Road still remain intact and are used today. The completion of the CPR Railway in 1886 led to new settlements in the Fraser Valley and the construction further encouraged growth and a prosperous forestry and agriculture base. In order to serve the growing population, service centres such as Langley Prairie (now the City of Langley), Abbotsford and Chilliwack emerged. Another significant link to the development of today’s communities was the completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1961 which greatly influenced the industrial, commercial and residential development throughout the Fraser Valley.

The Kwantlen (Qw’?ntl’en) were recorded in 1827 as the largest group on the lower Fraser, with a traditional territory extending from Mud Bay in Tsawwassen, through the Serpentine and Salmon Rivers and along the Fraser River; east past Mission.

Clayburn Village was the first company town built in British Columbia. The village was built around the Clayburn brick factory founded by Charles Maclure in 1905 after he found good quality fire clay on Sumas Mountain. The village also had three stores, a bank and a church. The village still stands and has been designated as a Heritage Conservation area. It is located 5 km (3 mi) northeast of Abbotsford.

While peaceful and friendly today, the Langley community of Aldergrove was once home to Canada’s first and most famous train robber, Bill Miner (known by the Mounties and much later,

Langley is often referred to as the Birthplace of BC for it was at Fort Langley, in 1858, that Governor James Douglas announced the creation of British Columbia. Fort Langley is also the exact location where the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) set up their huge trade organization and a nearby farm which was established to provide a source of food for their employees. The Kwantlen First Nation also moved their main settlement to this region to control and maintain a trading advantage with the HBC. Today, the village of Fort Langley is a thriving,

Abbotsford

Along with the blend of historic and heritage sites, visitors are attracted by the flourishing farm gate experiences, wineries, quaint boutiques and big-box shopping, as well as a variety of outdoor activities and events.

Abbotsford’s agricultural bounty has always been the reason for settling in the Fraser Valley for the Stó:lō First Nations, then for settlers of the Gold Rush, pioneers, immigrants and today, for commuters and those seeking a more rural lifestyle.

Langley is the burgeoning home of approximately 150,000 and is comprised of two municipalities, the City of Langley and the Township of Langley. The communities continue to look firmly towards the future but still retain their historic connections to the farm and family. Aldergrove and Murrayville are two of the oldest communities in Langley and several historical landmarks are found here including the community’s oldest schoolhouse, the province’s first border crossing and the Canadian Museum of Flight, a museum dedicated to restoring, preserving and showcasing Canada’s rich aviation heritage.

As the Gold Rush subsided in the latter half of the 1880s, many miners returned to the fertile Fraser Valley either as farmers or as railway workers. Migrants from the south were just as numerous and since parts of the AmericanCanadian border were still under dispute, the British had their Royal Engineers survey the area and secure British sovereignty. In 1889, former Royal Engineer John Cunningham Maclure applied for a Crown Grant to obtain the 160 acres (0.65 km2) that would become Abbotsford. Namesakes of these early families are found throughout the community.

Agriculture remains an important industry and the steady urban growth resulted in the creation of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) to help direct urban development and balance the agricultural use. Today, approximately 77% of Langley’s land mass remains green and is protected by inclusion in

Hollywood, as the Grey Fox). Though a masterful and elusive ne’er-do-well, the Grey Fox was eventually brought to justice in 1906 by local resident brothers, Duncan and Robert Shortreed. Today, there is a Cairn marking the location of this pioneer family homestead.

The original site of the Hudson’s Bay fort is actually located 3 km downstream from its present site, at what was later called Old Fort Langley and then Derby, in 1858. The remnants of the first fort and signage explaining its history are located in what is now Derby Reach Regional Park.

The Marr House (now the quaint store and café called Little White House) was built in 1910 by the community’s first resident physician, Dr. Benjamin Butler Marr. He planted the horse chestnut trees opposite his house as memorials to Langley men who died during the First World War.

Experience Sto:lo While the entire Fraser Valley is quite economically diverse, farming is the backbone of Abbotsford’s wealth and there are significant berry, vegetable, greenhouse, dairy, poultry and hog operations. Abbotsford’s industrial sector also reflects these strong agricultural roots with food processing and storage as well as seed and fertilizer production. Eat Local is an Abbotsford reality. As the bounty of Abbotsford’s fertile soils were first discovered, it attracted pioneer settlers from all over the world – immigrants who established the heritage and multicultural nature of the community. Sites such as Trethewey House were built by master craftsmen from India; immigrants who went on to construct Canada’s oldest Gurdwara Temple which is now a National Historic Site. Its easy-to-reach central location has made Abbotsford one of Canada’s fastest growing rural communities. Well-earned titles 8

such as Canada’s Sporttown and Canada’s Raspberry Capital speak to its eclectic make-up while its 11,000 student-strong university campus and new $55 million hospital centre reflect its growing importance within the Fraser Valley. Its glorious landscapes have also reached further afield as the backdrop to movies such as The Storm, Shooter, Space Buddies and Slither.

Chilliwack Chilliwack - The Great Outside derives its name from a local Indian tribe as well as from the geographic description of the area. Originally spelled Chilliwhack, this “Halkomelem” word means “quieter water at the head” or “travel by way of a backwater”. Chilliwack’s modern history saw humble beginnings that were influenced by the promise of riches when in 1857, the discovery of gold in the Fraser Canyon resulted in over 30,000 miners travelling through the Chilliwack area. The first farmers to arrive in the 1860s saw grasslands, swamps, bogs, scrub forests, ever-changing creeks

and ancient cedars as well as fir and hemlock forests. Work began on removing trees, draining the wetter areas, defining borders for roads, farms and communities and creating riverboat landings alongside rich grasslands that were ideal for growing crops and supporting grazing animals. The Township of Chilliwack was incorporated in 1873 and was the third municipality in British Columbia. Steamboats were the main mode of transportation, carrying goods and passengers between Chilliwack and New Westminster, the former Capital of BC. Today, you can still take a selfguided drive along the Yale Road Heritage Corridor that will take you beside the ancient Stó:lō Village and fish processing sites. By 1900, Chilliwack had developed into a community of several small, distinctive villages; each with their own centres. These communities have evolved with the local

economy and yet still maintain their own sense of identity. These neighbourhoods are home to many of Chilliwack’s artists, craftspeople and thriving small businesses, offering diversity and a rural charm that is an integral part of what makes Chilliwack a destination worth exploring. British Columbia’s Fraser Valley is an amazing destination that offers a variety of unique and memorable vacation opportunities. This region is defined by its spectacular scenery and is abundant with green forests, remarkable water systems, fertile agricultural land and majestic snow-capped mountains. With efficient access from all parts of the area to major regional transportation corridors and two border crossings in the south Fraser Valley, the area is open and accessible to visitors from across BC, the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Prior to the dedication of the Temple, BC Saints crossed the U.S.-Canada border to attend the Seattle Washington Temple. The Temple took 3 years to complete and in some cases, builder’s specs didn’t even exist at the time. deally located less than 1 hour from downtown Vancouver, the south Fraser Valley has nearly 30 vineyards and 8 wineries, many are boutique-style and family-owned. There is something quite serene and idyllic when you spend your time in the beautiful south Fraser Valley exploring the vineyards and the come-hither country roads that connect them. Fraser Valley wineries have grown in recent years and offer a well-respected wine destination that is sure to please the palates of the wine connoisseur. The industry literally took root in 1975 when Claude and Inge Violet, having sold their winery and vineyard in France, decided to start afresh in the New World. Their pioneer spirit was not new to the Violet bloodline as Claude’s family had been in the wine business since 1644. After visiting California, Ontario and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Clause and Inge purchased the land where the present site of Chaberton Estate Winery and the Bacchus Bistro are

located. People in the burgeoning wine industry in British Columbia scoffed at the idea of growing wine grapes in the rain drenched Fraser Valley but the shrewd Frenchman had done his homework. After doing much research, Claude found that the property in South Langley was located in a microclimate with weather conditions much like those that exist in Northern France. The 55 acre vineyard is the setting for daily tastings in the boutique tasting room, winery tours and exquisite dining with authentic French cuisine in the Zagat-rated “Excellent” Bacchus Bistro.

mountain that contains many different plant, animal and bird species and provides many recreational opportunities in its eastern section. The park has two main hiking trails rated moderate-to-difficult that are likely not suited to all hiking enthusiasts. One trail leads to Chadsey Lake and is roughly 1.5 km in length, round trip. You will need about two hours to complete this hike. The trail leading to the viewpoint, overlooking Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley, is shorter and less steep and is about 800 m round trip. Give yourself about 45 minutes for this hike. Other popular activities include mountain biking and wildlife viewing.

Also known as the Horse Capital of BC, it is not unusual for trails and parks to include a horseback rider or two. Langley is also home to a great number of equestrian facilities that support a strong equine industry including Thunderbird Show Park, one of North America’s premier equestrian facilities where you can enjoy the horses, the competition and a great atmosphere. Nature, with all its beauty, provides the perfect backdrop for the artist in you, so make sure you include your camera and canvas. In Chilliwack, majestic mountains tower above crystal clear rivers and lakes and this open-air paradise serves as the back drop for wilderness camping, paragliding, horseback riding, kayaking, ATVing, bird watching and other outdoor activities! walk

Abbotsford is home to the Discovery Trail, a 30+ km paved trail winding along creeks, lakes and fairgrounds from the west side of the city to the mountains in the east. It is an easy route with meandering, small climbs and rewarding things to see along the way.

The popular Rotary Trail, along the Vedder River in Chilliwack, runs for 15.5 km along a surface that is suitable for walking, running, cycling or horseback riding. Parking areas are located at Vedder, Peach, Lickman, and Sumas Prairie Road. Picnic tables and benches are situated along the trail.

Campbell Valley Regional Park, located in south Langley, is larger than Vancouver’s Stanley Park. At 1,322 acres, it features 29 km of walking, cycling, and horseback riding trails. The Fort-to-Fort trail in Fort Langley spans approximately 12 km and links the original site of Fort Langley to the current site.

to enjoy their paddle rafting and overnight camping adventures. Chilliwack River Rafting offers paddle rafting adventures for timid, first timers and hard core rafters. A fun trip for everyone is guaranteed. On the Chilliwack Classic, you always have the option to walk around the biggest rapids. Challenge the Chilliwack Canyon’s 14 km of nonstop action or try the Chilliwack Extreme trip with its monster waves. Make any of the trips an overnight camping adventure at the Riverside Resort along the river and enjoy tasty meals, campfires and camaraderie. When you look up at the peaks in Chilliwack, you might wonder if there are trails to those peaks and what it might be like to stand on top of such a mountain. As a general rule, there is a trail to every peak in the area. It just comes down to how adventurous you are to navigate your way along a trail that might not have seen much use. However, most hikes in the Chilliwack area are well maintained and range in difficulty from level-ground hour-long walks, to multiday trips and everything in between. If you are new to the area or just new to hiking be sure to pick up your free, trail map at one of our Visitor Centres or join a local hiking club. The most popular hikes are Elk Mountain, Mt. Cheam, Lindeman Lake, Greendrop Lake and of course, 44

stayfraservalley.ca

Mt. Thom and Teapot Hill. Elk Mountain is a Chilliwack favourite and is accessed above Ryder Lake. It is rated as a difficult hike due to the steep trail; however the hike to the summit can be done in a couple of hours. Then, it is easy hiking along the ridgeline stretching back towards Mt. Thurston to the East. This trail affords the hiker incredible views over the Chilliwack River Valley, the Fraser Valley and many of the peaks to the south such as Mt. Sleese and even Mt. Baker in Washington State.

and visit the biggest ‘rush’ on the Gold Rush Trail. You can see this place for yourself as you exchange mountain ranges aboard one of the only descending gondolas in North America. These aerial trams will give you a birds’ eye view of this historic landmark where 200 million gallons of water per minute thunder through this 33 metre wide passage.

Manning Park Resort has your four seasons covered. With Alpine and Nordic skiing in the winter; snowshoeing and exploring in the spring, canoeing, camping, hiking and swimming in the summer; fishing, hiking (check out the Larch trees on Mt Frosty) and boating during the autumn – there is always a beautiful outdoor adventure waiting for you!

If you are looking for something at the entry level, then you don’t need to look any further than Lindeman Lake. This trail is easily accessible right off of Chilliwack Lake Road and is a short hike to a beautiful alpine lake. If you are feeling energetic once you get there, you can continue past the lake to Greendrop Lake, another hour up the trail. For the more adventurous hikers, there are few hikes anywhere in the world that can compare to the Mt. MacFarlane/Pierce Lake trail. On this trail, you will wind through huge old Douglas Fir groves, pass by two beautiful alpine lakes and achieve a summit that has spectacular views of surrounding snow and glacier capped peaks with sweeping valleys below.

he south Fraser Valley is a world-class sport fishing destination that presents an opportunity for year round fishing experiences for novices and experts alike!

DID YOU know?

The abundance of salmon on the Fraser River enabled Fort Langley to find a receptive market for profit, exporting its product to Hawaii in the 19th century. In 1841, 540 barrels were sent and five years later, the production had tripled to 1,530 barrels.

The Mighty Fraser River is home to a Big Game Prehistoric Giant Dinosaur, the white sturgeon! It is the largest freshwater species in North and South America and can reach over 20 feet in length. Over the last 2 years, 3 monster sturgeons have been caught, recorded and released, unharmed by a local conservation minded fishing company, Great River Fishing Adventures. The south Fraser Valley is also the heart of the richest fishing grounds, where all 5 different species of Pacific Salmon (Chinook, Sockeye, Chum, Coho and Pinks) migrate, with annual run sizes that can be upwards of 40 million. Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden offer a greater

variety of species to encounter in this scenic panoramic mountainous view. Anglers use many methods of fishing such as spinning gear, casting and single and double-handed fly fishing. Abbotsford has two unique fish and fishing related experiences. Silverbrook U-Catch and Trout Hatchery is a fish lover’s dream and the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery Visitor Centre provides a fun and educational experience for all ages. This indoor/outdoor facility offers self-guided experiences for drop-in visitors and includes live fish aquariums and interactive displays. xceptional, state of the art sport facilities, ease of accessibility, excellent accommodation options and mild, west coast climate are just a few of the reasons why the communities of Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Langley are sought after destinations for sport activities. DID YOU know?

Abbotsford will host the 2016 BC Summer Games and the 2015 World Baton Twirling Championships.

One of the fastest growing events is the annual Prospera Valley GranFondo. Each July, this premier cycling event meanders riders through all three communities with start and finish lines in Fort Langley.

valleygranfondo.com Langley was one of the few sites in BC to host NASCAR events. It was home to one of the most active racetracks from the 60s to early 80s. The historic Langley Speedway was located in today’s Campbell Valley Regional Park and if you walk the track today, you can still see some of the damage along the walls that were caused by crashes. Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack will be hosting the 2014 CanAm International Kart Racing Championships, a 3-day race event held August 15 – 17. The track is also used to race motorcycles, from a pocket rocket size, to a 250 CC.

From hockey to rodeos Abbotsford is always playing host to a wide variety of events. The Abbotsford Entertainment & Sport Centre is home to the Abbotsford Heat, the only AHL franchise in the Valley and is a great place to watch the birth of hockey careers. The venue is conveniently situated off Highway 1 and accommodates other sporting events such as basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and many great shows like Reba McIntyre, Celtic Thunder, Sesame Street Live and many more. Abbotsford is also known as Sporttown for its aggressive involvement in sports at all levels.

Every August the skies over Abbotsford play host to The Abbotsford International Airshow - a showcase of aircraft both on the ground, for static display, as well as in the air for a wide variety of tricks and manoeuvres. This high-flying show started in 1962 as an effective way to promote the Abbotsford Airport. The first year saw 15,000 visitors and it continues to grow annually. The Abbotsford Agri-fair and Mighty Fraser Rodeo is the second largest event that Abbotsford hosts during the summer months. This not-forprofit organization, that was founded back in 1911, has brought 103 fairs to the residents and visitors of the Fraser Valley.

In 2007, the founding board members of the Run for Water Society conceptualized a unique event to be hosted in Abbotsford. The vision was to stage a top tier internationally recognized running event that would attract a wide range of participants and athletes and at the same time, raise awareness and funds for people in the developing world who lack one of life’s basic necessities – clean water. Langley has also become highly ranked as a destination for sport and events with an annual calendar packed with activities to enjoy. It is home to many local sports associations that support athlete development from the grassroots of the sport delivery system to national levels and professional ranks of competition. The Langley Events Centre is often the pulse of Langley, boasting an arena bowl that holds over 5,000 people for basketball, hockey, lacrosse or volleyball games. It also features multiple gymnasiums, a 20,000 square foot gymnastics training facility and a multipurpose sport area. Whatever the sport, you will get a lot of action here. 54

Trinity Western University Spartans call this facility home for CIS competition as well as the Langley Rivermen Jr. A hockey franchise and the NLL Vancouver Stealth lacrosse team. Experienced in event hosting, supported by visitor services and recreational staff, ensure each sport event held in Langley is an unparalleled experience for athletes and spectators alike. Recent successful events such as the Prospera Valley GranFondo, BC Special Olympics, NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Challenge and Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships show why Langleyites have proven to be true fans, showing their support for both visiting and home teams. When sport is not your game, visitors can’t help but feel this community’s energy and be in awe of the mosaic of year-round events to choose from. There are charity events such as the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, unique festivals like Downtown Langley’s Arts Alive, Fort Langley’s Cranberry Festival, the ever-growing International Festival

as well as must attend fall fairs such as Campbell Valley’s Country Celebrations and Aldergrove Fair Days. They all proudly celebrate the culture of Langley and make the streets and neighbourhoods come alive. Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65-acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building that can accommodate a whole host of events from trade shows and conventions, concerts, dog shows, horse shows, Arena Cross events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, and more! There is also plenty of space for camping with your event. If you are a hockey fan, then you must see the pride and passion that Chilliwack has for hockey by going to a Chilliwack Chiefs BC Hockey League game at Prospera Centre, a 100,000 square foot, multipurpose facility with two NHL-sized ice surfaces. Friday nights in the summer mean Party in the Park in downtown Chilliwack. The event features live entertainment, kids activities and the night market.

Chilliwack Flight Fest is a popular August event for plane enthusiasts and families. Thousands turn out to stroll amongst the displays, climb in and out of aircraft, meet and greet the performers, enjoy a summer’s day and an old-fashioned barn-storming airshow experience – all for free! The Chilliwack Airshow is one of only a few free admission shows left in North America. Island 22 Regional Park in Chilliwack is not only a popular boat launch, it is also a horse park and crosscountry training facility that has become the main training grounds for most riders in the Fraser Valley area and beyond. Annually, the park hosts the BC Horse Trials and Unbridled Mud Trials, a new cross training event that draws over 800 participants!

The Fraser Valley boasts a temperate climate that is enjoyed by visitors and residents year round. Contributing factors include the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the protection of the spectacular Coastal Mountain range. The Fraser Valley has an average of 1,725 hours of bright sunshine and nearly 200 frost-free days a year.

There are two border crossings in the Fraser Valley that can be used to enter Canada from the United States.

Summers are warm, with daytime temperatures slightly warmer than 20 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit). This weather continues into the month of October which features crisp autumn mornings. Winters are mild and traditionally wet with average temperatures of 2 degrees C. (35.6 degrees F). Snow is rare, however, it does accumulate on the nearby ski hills, enabling excellent outdoor winter activities. Spring comes early in the Fraser Valley, with the gardens alive with blooms as early as February. For a detailed weather report visit weather.gc.ca
