Fraser River

tHE frASeR rIveR Let the Fraser River guide your travels, and make the journey your destination. The river pulses through our land and is the artery that makes the Valley glow. It nourishes and brings life to the land and people and represents our strong and free spirit. Our river is integral to our way of life today, to our ancestors in the past and most importantly our future generations of tomorrow.

The Stó:lō, also known as the Fraser River, continues to be central to the Stó:lō, the People. The First Peoples established themselves along this blue ribbon, because it had an abundant supply of salmon, sea birds, edible plants and other necessities of life. According to our sxwōxwiyam, our origin stories, Xexá:ls, the Transformers in their quest to make the world right, created the river for our benefit. As such it is considered to be very sacred. Furthermore, the river was used by the Transformers as they travelled upriver twice to make the world right.

The Halkomelem name for Abbotsford is Selxwí:chel, the “centre of something” or “middle of three.”

Ts’elxwéyeqw, “going back upstream” or “as far as you can go with a canoe” is Halkomelem for Chilliwack.

The area at the confluence of the Coquihalla and Fraser River has long been a place of communities coming together.

The ridge of Abbotsford overlooks the tribal territories of the Sema:th to the east, the Mathekwi to the north and the Nexwseq to the south. Nestled on the flatlands between the Coast and Cascade mountain ranges, Abbotsford was first inhabited by the Stó:lō First Nations, followed by the European settlers fresh from the Gold Rush. Abbotsford’s fertile soils attracted pioneer settlers from all over the world – immigrants who established the heritage and multicultural nature of the community. Sites such as Trethewey House were built by master craftsmen from India; immigrants who went on to construct Canada’s oldest Gurdwara Temple, which is now a National Historic Site. You can learn more about Abbotsford’s rich history by visiting the Mennonite Heritage Museum, The Reach Gallery Museum and the MSA Museum.

The Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribal territory extends from the Fraser River up the Chilliwack River to Chilliwack Lake with tributary watersheds into the USA. The Peló:lhxw Tribal territory borders north Chilliwack and along Hope Slough, connecting the three-member Pilalt Tribe. Chilliwack derives its name from a local First Nations tribe, as well as from the geographic description of the area. Chilliwack is the original spelling, this “Halkomelem” word means “quieter water at the head.” Chilliwack’s modern history saw humble beginnings influenced by the promise of riches when in 1857, the discovery of gold in the Fraser Canyon resulted in over 30,000 miners travelling through the Chilliwack area. The first farmers to arrive in the 1860s saw grasslands, swamps, bogs, scrub forests, everchanging creeks, ancient cedars, as well as fir and hemlock forests. Learn more about Chilliwack’s diverse history at Stó:lō Tourism – www.stolotourism.com and pick up some unique finds at the Stó:lō Gift Shop.

Harrison’s hot springs were first used as a healing place by the Sts’ailes people and known as ‘kwals’ the Halq’eméylem word meaning boiling water. Later, according to legend, Settlers ‘discovered’ the springs enroute to the gold fields. Their boat capsized, and expecting to die they instead discovered the water was rather warm. The springs have supported a small resort community ever since. Its namesake hot springs are a major attraction for tourists in addition to the hiking, biking and paddling the area affords.

Originally called Ts’qo:ls, this Halq’eméylem word means “bare on one side” and refers to the way the trees along the river are bare west facing side due to the wind coming off the river. When the Hudson’s Bay Company was searching for a safer route inland, the area at Ts’qo:ls represented the “best hope” for finding a trailhead. Under the guidance of Stó:lō, Nlaka’pamux, and Similkameen guides, the HBC company found a route that worked and established Fort Hope at the trailhead in 1848.

The name of the salmonberry plant in the local Halq’eméylem dialect is Elílá:lhp (Uh-lee-laa-lthp). The various salmon species in the Lower Fraser (Stó:lō) region has been interpreted through the phenological cues of the salmonberry plant for thousands of years by the Stó:lō people.

Life Cycle of the Salmon The life cycle of various salmon species in the Lower Fraser, Stó:lō region, has been interpreted through the phenological cues of the salmonberry plant for thousands of years by the

Stó:lō people. In the spring, when the bright pink flowers appear on the salmonberry bush, the first Spring Salmon of the new year are making their way up the river. As the berries appear and grow ripe, the silver Sockeye are moving up the river. When the berries are done for the season,

the spawning sockeye are passing by in the river. And the last stop on the cycle before it begins again, is in the fall, when the leaves have fallen and the stems remain, the pink or chum salmon are spawning in the river. ORIGINAL ARTWORK

History of Hops in The Fraser Valley

For over a century hop production in Canada was centred around Chilliwack B.C. In 1997 the John I. Haas Company closed its doors, and an industry that thrived for well over a hundred years came to an end. With a resurgence of production in the area, the hops industry in the Fraser Valley is headed for a return to the glory days of years past.

BC Hop Fest Celebrating fresh-hopped beers, this annual beer festival brings the brews back to the hop field to showcase their seasonal fresh-hopped beers (those brewed with freshly harvested hops). Visit the Stó:lō Welcome Figures These two figures are carved in a traditional Stó:lō–Coast Salish style, and located at the Chilliwack Visitor Information Centre, directly off Highway #1. The man wears a cedar skirt; the woman a cedar shawl. Both wear customary cedar hats. They stand together as the core of the extended family and leaders of the village. They face the direction of visiting travellers. Their hands are raised with open palms, in a gesture of peace, showing that there is nothing to hide. This gesture welcomes people to these lands today as in the past — to explore, engage, exchange, respect and learn.
