LANGLEY For countless generations, the Kwantlen People lived in villages along the lower Fraser River that shaped a vibrant cultural landscape. Though these villages are now largely urbanized, Kwantlen maintains a strong, sacred connection to each of these places. Today, our main village is Fort Langley. Following our rich legacy and traditions, we continue to work tirelessly at building a strong sense of community within our Traditional Territory. ABBOTSFORD The Halq'eméylem name for Abbotsford is Selxwi:chel, the “centre of something” or “middle of three.” The ridge of Abbotsford overlooks the tribal territories of the Sema:th to the east, the Mathekwi to the north and the Nexwseq to the south. Nestled on the flatlands between the Coast and Cascade mountain ranges, Abbotsford was first inhabited by the Stó:lō First Nations, followed by European settlers fresh from the Gold Rush. MISSION Rising up from the Fraser River and into the foothills of the Coast Mountain Range, Mission offers an awe-inspiring vantage point of the Fraser Valley. The abundance of our rivers, lakes and lands serve as a constant reminder of our deep-rooted history. Thriving outdoors rain or shine, fishing the great white sturgeon, mountain bike trailblazing, hiking to the soundtrack of a rumbling waterfall and the call of the raven;

we continue to learn from the Stó:lō peoples and Indigenous communities on the connection and significance of this land and how it has shaped important cultures and traditions. CHILLIWACK The Halq'eméylem name for Chilliwack is Ts’elxwéyeqw, meaning “going back upstream” or “as far as you can go with a canoe.” Chilliwack’s modern history saw humble beginnings influenced by the promise of riches when in 1857; the discovery of gold in the Fraser Canyon resulted in over 30,000 miners travelling through the Chilliwack area. The first farmers to arrive in the 1860s saw grasslands, swamps, bogs, scrub forests, ever-changing creeks, ancient cedars, as well as fir and hemlock forests. HARRISON Harrison’s Hot Springs were first used as a healing place by the Sts’Ailes people and known as ‘kwals’ the Halq’eméylem word meaning word meaning boiling water. Its namesake hot springs are a major attraction for tourists in addition to the hiking, biking, and paddling the area affords. HOPE CASCADES & CANYONS Originally called the Ts’qo:lo, this Halq’eméylem word means “bare on one side” and refers to the way the trees along the river are bare west facing side due to the wind coming from the river. When the Hudson Bay Company was searching for a safe route inland, the area at Ts’qo:lo represented the “best hope” for finding a trailhead.

The Fraser River The Stó:lō, also known as the Fraser River, continues to be central to the Stó:lō people, the People of the River. The first Peoples established themselves along the river because it had an abundant supply of salmon, sea birds, edible plants and other necessities of life. The river nourishes and brings life to the land and its people. Let the River guide your travels, and make the journey your destination. THE FRASER VALLEY EXPERIENCES GUIDE / 3

Our Seasons The name of the salmonberry plant in the local Halq’eméylem dialect is Elílá:lhp (Uh-lee-laa-lthp). The various salmon species in the Lower Fraser (Stó:lō) region has been interpreted through the phenological cues of the salmonberry plant for thousands of years by the Stó:lō people.

Life Cycle of the Salmon The life cycle of various salmon species in the Lower Fraser, Stó:lō region, has been interpreted through the phenological cues of the salmonberry plant for thousands of years by the

Stó:lō people. In the spring, when the bright pink flowers appear on the salmonberry bush, the first Spring Salmon of the new year are making their way up the river. As the berries appear and grow ripe, the silver Sockeye are moving up the river. When the berries are done for the season,

the spawning sockeye are passing by in the river. And the last stop on the cycle before it begins again, is in the fall, when the leaves have fallen and the stems remain, the pink or chum salmon are spawning in the river. ORIGINAL ARTWORK

SpIRITED SIPS

In the Valley, vineyards line the rolling hills, and rows of hops grow thick for the late summer harvest. The Fraser Valley is home to a variety of wineries, breweries and even a meadery who feed off of the land, using grapes and hops that are distinct to this climate and truly capture our flavour.

History of Hops in The Fraser Valley For over a century hop production in Canada was centred around Chilliwack B.C. In 1997 the John I. Haas Company closed its doors, and an industry that thrived for well over a hundred years came to an end. With a resurgence of production in the area, the hops industry in the Fraser Valley is headed for a return to the glory days of years past.

Indigenous Culture We are the Stó:lō, which in our Halq’eméylem language translates as “People of the River.” Stó:lō is also our name for what is referred to as the Fraser River. We are part of the larger Coast Salish and our oral history maintains that “We have always been here.” Through our s–xwo–x_wiyám (creation stories), our Sqwélqwel (family history) and our Shxwelí (spirit, life force) we continue to maintain a close connection to all our resources from the mountains, rivers and streams of S’olh Témèxw (Our Land, Our World).

Fish of the Fraser Valley

Fraser River

The Fraser Valley is also the heart of the richest fishing grounds, where all 5 different species of Pacific Salmon (Chinook, Sockeye, Chum, Coho and Pinks) migrate, with annual run sizes that can be upwards of 40 million. Other species of fish include Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Dolly Varden, and Sturgeon. Anglers use many methods of fishing such as spinning gear, casting and single and double-handed fly fishing. Some of the best fly fishing in the province can be found on the Skagit River near Hope.

STURGEON

Did you Know? The largest salmon ever caught on a fly rod on the Fraser River weighed approximately 66 pounds!

It is the largest freshwater species in North and South America and can reach over 20 feet in length and live well over 150 years in both fresh and saltwater. Over the last couple of years, monster sturgeon have been caught, recorded and released, unharmed by local conservation-minded fishing companies.

Fishing Regulations It is the angler’s responsibility to read and understand the B.C. fishing regulations. Please fish ethically and handle fish with care. These laws exist to protect our fish stocks and maintain an ecological balance within our environment. Visit the British Columbia Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis for more information on regulations env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations

FISHING FOR SALMON The Fraser Valley is also the heart of the richest fishing grounds, where all 5 different species of Pacific Salmon (Chinook, Sockeye, Chum, Coho and Pinks) migrate, with annual run sizes that can be upwards of 40 million. The Fraser River Corridor in the Fraser Valley is the most delicate and rich ecosystem for our Wild Salmon and Sturgeon on the entire 1375 km river.
