FREE_MAN CAPSULE COLLECTION

Advert

Inspired by the rich-kids phenomenon The Freeman Journal recently developed a streetwear capsule collection “FREE_MAN” converging ideas of luxe meets grunge. As high society trades couture for streetwear, a new industry has been born seeing younger generations strive to express themselves in new ways. This proved to be the conceptual basis of the collection using provocative language and slangs such as T-Shirts with hand adorned text including “EPOD” (dope spelt backwards) and “NASTY” embroidered on caps to reflect the rebellion. The solid black collection further features religious iconography to emphasise the new cult of fashion, whereby tradition has been reinvigorated with new, youthful fresh eyes seeing the world and fashion with a new perspective. In a new world where individuals have become the brand versus the brand becoming the individual, “FREE_MAN” is for the brash, outspoken rebel with a taste for the finer things in life yet lives for the thrills and hustle of the urban world.

NATALIE ROSER Q&A Starting out modelling at age 13 Australian model Natalie Roser has proven to have had an exciting career thus far, making a name for herself back in 2014 when she was a finalist in Miss Universe Australia before then going on to build her own international brand as a model, influencer, blogger, businesswoman and designer, launching her own fashion label and blog. We spoke exclusively with Roser discussing all things lifestyle and fashion.

- Describe a day in the life of Natalie Roser

- How would you describe your fashion style?

Ever-changing. Except breakfast is always the first thing on my mind. After that, I either go to work or start my day with some exercise before working through my checklist for the day.

My style is comfortable, fun, weather appropriate and highly flexible. I am constantly being introduced to new fashion ideas and don’t have a set ‘style vision’ that I like to stick to.

- Tell us about how you got into modelling?

- Tell us more about your recently launched fashion label “Roser”

I started when I was 13, where I was scouted through a magazine model search competition. From there I was signed and started my modelling journey. - At what point did you then decide to make the transition from model to digital influencer and why? For me it was never really a decision. I liked sharing my job with my small Instagram followers because I enjoyed taking images of what I was up to at work and then my followers grew and grew to the point where I started being offered opportunities based on my social media presence. I have always loved photography and creating digital content of me enjoying my life, seems to have turned me into a digital influencer. - Who are you most inspired by? Currently I am loving watching women like Rosie Huntington-Whitley grow and build their own brands outside of modelling. For me, this has always been a goal and seeing them move through their careers so gracefully is really inspiring.

I launched Roser, the Label less than a year ago and it has been one of my proudest achievements. It started as a range of rompers for young women and has now expanded in to swim pieces, t-shirts and a few accessories. It’s a really fun creative outlet for me and the feedback has be really promising. My most valued feedback is from girls who are grateful for my torso sizing options with my rompers. Girls can choose their size and then also select their torso size as well. This is perfect for taller women or for women that have a longer body and don’t fit regular rompers available in other stores. It’s been a very rewarding experience for me. - Being such a busy businesswoman, model and designer how do you find balance between work and personal life? The time I spend with friends and family is quality time. I always actively put my phone away when I’m out to lunch or on a date with my partner because I would expect the same from them. I manage to balance the two perfectly and find that my time management skills and a really helpful agent and management team help a lot.

BENTLEY BENTAYGA FALCONRY Dating back to 2,000 BC falconry has long been a beloved form of hunting, seeing avid hunters within countries including the United Emirates continue the ancient history and culture for the next generation. It was this, that made Bentley Motor Sports recently develop the ultimate accessory for the falconry enthusiast, with the Bentayga Falconry by Mulliner.

Advert

Hand-crafted by Mulliner – Bentley’s personal commissioning division the Bentayga Falconry features a bespoke installation in the rear which houses all the equipment required for an enjoyable falconry expedition.

At the heart of the Bentayga Falconry by Mulliner are two individual natural-cork-fabric-trimmed units: a master flight station and a refreshment case. These sit on a movable tray that allows for easy access. Inside the master flight unit is a special Piano Black veneered drawer – with a saker falcon crest – containing bespoke storage for all the equipment required for this unique sport. Beneath this is a laserembossed Hotspur hide stowage tray with individual compartments for a GPS bird tracking unit, binoculars and hand-crafted leather bird hoods and gauntlets, all of which are available as an additional option. The refreshment case houses three metal flasks and durable cups, a blanket and refreshing face cloths. Inside the Bentayga’s Hotspur-hide-trimmed cabin, there is a

removable transportation perch and tether on the central armrest, and an exquisite example of Mulliner’s skill with marquetry. The sweeping desert scene – featuring a soaring saker falcon – was created using 430 individual pieces of wood sourced from all over the world and hand-crafted over nine days. Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner, said: “The Bentayga Falconry showcases what’s possible with our skilled craftspeople. They can devise elegant and exquisitely executed bespoke solutions to compliment any lifestyle or hobby. Falconry is regarded as the sport of kings in the Middle East, so it was vital that the kit we created was as luxurious as it was practical and durable to appeal to our valued customers there and around the world.”

KAL OUSSEIMI Q&A Reflecting on his day-to-day adventures through the eye of the lens Kal Ousseimi proves to be one of the new-age vlogger’s and influencers using social media to explore his creativity, developing content and most recently a new fashion label “Bonfire Vanities”. We spoke with Kal exclusively to discuss his latest projects.

- How would you describe your style? I mix up a bit of high fashion with a skater look. Gucci Jeans + Vans is a great Combo. - Describe a Regular Day?

realities that dominate the internet and the youth’s minds. I’ve been designing a couple of articles of clothing that reflect our generations obsession with vanity and immediate gratification. All in to subtly tell a story and at the same time, style individuals in my own manner.

Advert

-When you decide to get involved with filming?

Every day is different - not much regularity in my life at the moment! Starting from the moment I wake up. I always start off the day with vitamins and coffee, then it’s emails and phone calls. Some calls lead to crazy adventures. I can be in New York one day then the next I’m in London. It gets pretty crazy. My irregularity is my regularity.

I’ve been using a camera ever since I was 6. It wasn’t really a conscious decision, I have really bad eye sight. Eventually I got glasses and started using it properly. I see film and photography as the best way of conveying where I am in my life through capturing moments, but also as the greatest tool to create illusion, mystery and fantasy.

- What are you currently Inspired by?

- What are the details on your latest VR project?

Gucci’s new collection is doing things to me. Albert Camus and Jean Paul Sartre were big inspirations to my existential crisis I was going through last year.

Oh shh, it’s a secret! But, it has to do with our brand Bonfire of the Vanities. Have you ever been to a pop up store? If you haven’t then, now you’ll have one in your pocket. You’ll be able to access a virtual world (that is our online store) and shop through our collection. All virtually on your mobile device. Exciting stuff, that will be available on our website very soon!

- Tell us about your latest project - Bonfire of the Vanities? Bonfire of The Vanities is a reflection of the environment my friends and I have been living in. The toxic environment of self-obsession and false

EURO GLAMOUR GIRL Leading a chic lifestyle, fashion stylist and lifestyle blogger Mailili Sasabone proves to be making her own mark as she displays her cool edge on European Fashion. We spoke exclusivelty with Mailili.

- Describe a day in the life of Mailili Sasabone?

- What designers are you currently coveting?

Advert

It depends on the day. Right now I’m still in school so that’s is a big part of my daily life. I usually wake up very early, on the way I’ll get coffee and breakfast. I always go by train (the luxury life of a blogger). An average blog day means; brand meetings and lots off shoots. I’ll end my day with my friends or writing a new post before I go to sleep. - What made you decide to become a fashion blogger?

As a 13 year old I followed a lot of bloggers on Instagram, back then I was way to young and decided to start on when I was done with school. When I became 17 I didn’t want to wait anymore because blogging is such a popular thing right now.

Definitely Gucci, they made the biggest comeback with Alessandro Michele. I’m currently craving almost everything from stores. - Where is your all time favorite travel destination and why? The Moluccan! I had the best experience over there with my family and the island is so beautiful. - What 5 items could you not live without? I can live without items easily but a phone, passport and laptop are the things that make my life much easier.

CLEAN LINES: REDGEN MATHIESON Architects and Interior Designers Phillip Mathieson and Harlan Redgen together head up Redgen Mathieson, one of Australia’s leading Design Firms offering turn key properties, focusing on minimal sophisticated luxury. We spoke exclusively with the duo. - What made you decide to become an Architect and Designer? PM: I have an Uncle who is an architect and I grew up in a house he designed. I have early memories of visiting a building in Melbourne that he designed. A Brutalist building entirely clad in bluestone, it opened my eyes to the world of architecture and design from a young age. HR: From a young age I have always wanted to be an Architect, I don’t think there was ever any question about it. I can’t really remember wanting to do anything else, and if it had, I’m sure it would have been design related. - What are you currently inspired by? PM: I am inspired by anything of quality and longevity. Although our work is very modern my inspiration can come from diverse interests such as Baroque architecture to the manipulation of proportion, to the play of light and shade.

- What would you say the fundamentals of a Redgen Mathieson designed residence consist of? PM: It is important to us, that each of our projects capture a sense of purity and timelessness. Underlying all our projects is a clear planning rigour and a holistic approach to the architecture and interior. Our architecture focuses on the sensory and experiential. We are interested in the quality of space, of light and of proportion. These are the elements that enhance the lives of our clients. HR: These days there is a tendency for someone to have their Architect, then interior designer, then their decorator, and then their landscape architect, which usually results in an incoherent mess. In our work we take a holistic approach to the entire project, encompassing architecture, interior design, furniture and landscape design. - Where is your all time favourite destination? PM: I find great inspiration in Paris. Architecture, Fashion, Culture, Art and History. It is a city of unending perspectives; the gardens with their avenues of clipped trees, the colonnades of the Palais Royale or Place des Vosges. Exhilarating boulevards and the elegant smaller scaled spaces such as Place des Victoires. I love the city’s honey coloured stone.

Advert

HR: I am inspired by spaces which have a sense of calm and clarity, and spatial qualities that are meaningful and not based on fads and fashions. Personally I don’t enjoy overstated design that is singing out for attention at every corner, detail or feature. It becomes like white noise in the end, and just ends in visual fatigue. I like spaces that have interest and are dynamic as a result of the space itself, and that are easy and relaxing to be in. I enjoy fewer elements and details in a space, that are of a higher quality and have thoughtful detailing. I am not interested in the latest colours or finishes, so for me brazen ‘look at me’ Architecture or Interiors, are insecure and often pretentious. I am inspired by people who I think are talented in their fields. Most of these are from the past where architecture, interiors, furniture and landscape all co-existed in harmony as a unified environment. That’s projects like Mies van de Rohe’s Barcelona Pavillion, and John Pawson’s Nuendorf house. I’m inspired by artists such as Carl Andre, Donald Judd and Cy Twombly.

HR: There are too many to pick from, but if I was pushed, it would probably be Spain, in particular Barcelona. - Where to next? PM: We’re excited to be working on designs for a house in Greece overlooking the Ionian Sea, so I’m planning a mid year trip to Greece for a site visit. HR: This year I have a lot of friends turning 40 so the next destination is Ibiza for a week in July, for a friends 40th birthday.

- What projects are you currently working on?

- How would you define luxury?

PM: We always have an interesting mix of projects that we work on at anyone time. Currently under construction in Canberra is a large house set within extensive landscaping on a 5000m2 site. In Sydney, construction is about to commence on three apartments in Kirribilli overlooking Circular Quay and the Opera House. We have just finished conceptual design work for two new houses in Mosman, one with views across Chinaman’s Beach to the heads of Sydney Harbour. It’s always exciting to be working on new projects.

PM: Luxury to me is experiential, it is about how something makes you feel. It is bringing a sensory, spiritual element to daily life.

HR: We are very fortunate in that we tend to work on projects with forward thinking clients, who luckily also tend to own great sites on which to build.

HR: I don’t believe you have to cover everything in gold for it to be luxurious. I believe in quiet luxury. I think the term and the idea of luxury has been hijacked to become something it is not. What many believe to be luxury, is now mass market. For me true luxury is having confidence to know what luxury is for you, and not simply go out and buy someone else’s idea of luxury. You see a lot of design that is trying really hard to have a ‘luxury’ look, but if the motivation is inauthentic it just ends up as something superficial, which to me is the opposite of luxury.

JACK MORRIS After packing his bags 5 years ago, quitting his job in Britain on a one-way flight to Bangkok, Jack Morris never could have expected becoming one of the world’s most famous social media influencers. With close to 2 million Instagram followers, Morris showcases his daily travels to some of the most picturesque and exotic destinations on earth. - Tell us about how your online/social media fame became what it is today?

- You have travelled all over the world, where is your favourite destination to date?

I pretty much just use it to document my life and what I am doing, as I am continuously travelling and have been doing so for over 5 years now. It’s basically an online journal and as my following has grown, it has become more curated. It was never supposed to be a business or make money and eventually people started contacting me and as it got bigger and bigger it was hard to turn deals down.

It’s quite hard to think of one single place that would be my favourite, however Tsarabanjina, an island just off Madagascar would definitely be one of my favourite, it is in the middle of the ocean, completely secluded, away from everything, just untouched beautiful island. It probably takes an hour to walk around with only 40 bungalows on the whole island, it’s just really well kept. As far as destinations go I loved Cappadocia in Turkey its quite a surreal place and I also love Jordan.

- What made you decide to move to Bali?

 - Where to next?

I came here three years ago and just fell in love with it straight away. I’ve spent most my time in South East Asia, the difference between Bali is it has this healthy style of living and also westernized lifestyle. It’s also quite cheap and accessible to live here.

I do so much and have a list of places I’d like to go but I’d love to go to Tahiti and Samoa but next stop is Thailand and then Dubai.

TYLER SHIELDS:

KING OF DRAMA

Advert

Widely known for burning Hermes Birkins, drawing celebrities blood and a little black book full of celebrity muses, American Photographer Tyler Shields proves to be making waves in contemporary art circles. For years, we’ve been viewers to Tyler Shields provocative representation of luxury, celebrity and even a little bit of blood. What is it that makes Shield’s work so intriguing? For some, the provoking imagery pushes the boundaries of what it is to be considered art and is something that would not want to be viewed as a constant. When the American photographer, director and writer found himself photographing celebrities in the studio with the unconventional use of items such as luxury goods to raw meat, he found himself making quite an impact and name in the art scene. An impact that has seen Shields follow through on his vision and paid off in creating something unique, enabling him to realise his creative imagination. Looking back to some of his earlier works, the photographs retain a studio-based practice featuring the likes of Lindsay Lohan and the cast of Glee. Perhaps a well recognised piece is his image of Lohan drowsed in blood and swinging a knife. Another development in Shield’s photographs is the key involvement of luxury brands, such as burning the famous Hermes Birkin bag or feeding one to the likes of an alligator. Nonetheless, the aesthetics and avant-garde style, pose Shields as an innovative, rule breaking and new class photographer. What might be considered risqué for those more interested in photographs of fruit in a bowl can be considered an industry revival that defies the boundaries and is something different than we want to see.

- Talk me through the day in the life of Tyler Shields. No two days are the same right now i am sitting in room 2005 on the 20th floor of the virgin hotel in Chicago a few hours ago I was having a conversation with a women about her 9 children in a dairy queen out side of Gary, Indiana. Some days are spent shooting where anything from blowing up a car to having planes fly over head at 10 feet above the ground can happen, some days are spent 20 hours straight at a computer (had to get a standing desk because it was killing me) Some days are spent going through prints. I suppose the only thing you could say is there is never a dull day, never an off day, but that is exactly how I like it, I have a lot of ideas and its not possible to do them all at once, so learning how to do them when the time is right, that was always the trick.

- What made you choose photography? I didn’t choose it, it chose me. It just happened one day I was not making photographs then the next day it was all I wanted to do.

- How and why did the introduction of celebrities come to be?

Advert

- From luxury, blood, to the use of celebrities how did it all start? It all started with an idea, the idea was to do something different, something my own way and when I started everyone told me I was crazy, I met with magazines and other publications and was essentially rejected by all of them. From there I realized a fun fact, the internet was coming and fast so I set out to do my own thing and that’s when I discovered fine art, the idea that you can shoot whatever you want and people can collect it and put it on their walls seemed like a dream at first but as the first print sold I was hooked from there, the idea of doing galleries which is a whole other monster on its own, was the next thing I knew I needed to focus on. As for the items and people I was never interested in celebrity as much as talent, celebrity is a label, a celebrity today can be nothing tomorrow, while talent is a commodity, it is something tangible you can loose it certainly but its much harder to loose celebrity then it is to loose talent. So to answer it all started a shot down dream that men of power tried to destroy before it ever became a reality but the best dreams are the ones you fight for.

I have a lot of friends who are actors, when we started not many of them were successful but over time they have become very successful, its so great for me to see them follow their dreams and find them. For me its about making a world because most of the time the world i want does not exist, so I have to create it and what better when creating a world out of your imagination then people who play in other worlds for a living.

- Do you have a close relationship with many of your art buyers/ clients? If so why do you think that is? Some of them I have never met, some of them I am very close with. I love people and I am fascinated by all types so to be able to meet people and have the conversations I have been able to have with collectors is incredible, it has shaped my work for sure, I just spent 2 days staying with a friend/ collector of mine the last time I was at his house I came up with the idea for the lynching photo and now its in the room where I first came up with it in. Seeing something that once was only a thought hung in someone’s house is a feeling that can not be described but I will tell you this it makes you want to do more and be better at everything you do, because unlike a TV or a computer or a phone you can’t turn off the art on the wall it is on display for all to see at all times.

AZURIS, HAMILTON ISLAND Located on the hilltops of Hamilton Island overlooking the Australian Coral sea, Azuris designed by Renato D’Ettorre, proves to be an architectural mastepiece responding to the key three elements of light, air and water. We spoke exclusively with Renato. - What was the brief?

- Where is your all time favourite destination?

Apart from the bare necessities of 3 bedrooms, there was no specific brief. The design evolved organically exploring many possibilities for the client to respond to by way of reviews, revisions and modification until we arrived at the design we both felt responded well to the site, architect’s objectives and client’s desires.

Wherever there is a rich history of architecture, traditional lifestyle and a culture still thriving and evocative landscapes. I try to return annually to my birth town in the Appenine mountains of Abruzzo, where you can experience life in a small village and the many humanistic attributes it has to offer. As a child growing up in a mountain village I was exposed to pristine streams meandering down fields of poppies, delicate forests and distant vistas of snow capped mountains. i.e a feast of visual delights. However, a trip to Venice always reveals new observations, arouses enthusiasm and lifts the spirit, a city of dreams.

Advert

- What were you inspired by? The tropical climate and the site’s wealth of nuances. The architecture had to embody: complexity and multiplicity to match the site’s complexities and multiplicities.

- What are the fundamentals of a Renato D’Ettorre? Design that relates to the intrinsic qualities of the place. Relationship between architecture and setting, architecture within a place.

- How would you define luxury? Luxury comes with well proportioned interior spaces, controlled natural light and materials that bestow the spaces with emotions. Physical luxury comes with a good Italian sofa, a good plate of pasta, enjoyed in a walled courtyard open to the sun with the sound of a percolating fountain and a shading tree.

GEORGE BYRNE

Following moving to Los Angeles, Australian photographer and musician George Byrne has proven to release his passion in capturing the inherent beauty within raw urban landscapes. Exhibiting his works both within Gallery Exhibitions and within his Instagram gallery (@ george_byrne) has seen the world enthralled by his subject matter, often featuring banal and simple moments in life, yet conveying them in a whimsical and transformative fashion. We spoke exclusively with Byrne:

- What made you decide to become an artist? Well I think you’re born an artistic person, it flows through you whether you like it or not, the decision you have to make is whether you want to dedicate your life to it and try and carve out a living. Which is daunting for obvious reasons. For me it was never a conscious decision or anything, maybe more a matter of necessity as I knew I was pretty good at photography and music and the alternative would be digging holes and serving drinks for the rest of my life. The thing I found is the older I got, the more focused I became on getting something serious done in the arts, I just wanted to put my head down and work, and that’s when the results started to happen. It’s only very recently that I could sustain myself of my work alone so the whole thing is still quite surreal.

- What are you currently inspired by? Everything, my brain is exploding. I have a few different bodies of work that I’m thinking about.

- What made you decide to relocate to Los Angeles? Looking back on it (2010) I was just at a point in my life that I knew I wasn’t going to grow unless I left my home country, Australia. It wasn’t really LA that was screaming my name, just anywhere I could be creative and try and get better at the stuff I was doing. I was also just craving a huge adventure, and I certainly got one coming here. The decision to stay in LA once I got here was just based on a deep sense of it being the right place at the right time. I had some work leads here and some good opportunities and I just found the place completely fascinating, I still do. - Where is your all time favourite destination and why? That’s a tough question, I’ve lots of favorites but the most seismic, lifealtering trip I’ve had was when I went to India - just out of High School. This was just before the internet / smartphones had us all by the throat, so back then when you went places like that you really went! I was so young and naïve, I knew no-one and nothing, I recall being so high on life it was almost too much to bare, greatest feeling ever.

ROLLS-ROYCE ‘SWEPTAIL’ For one Rolls Royce client, owning one of the most expensive commercial motor cars on the market was not enough. So what does one do? This specific customer decided to approach the luxury car manufacturer in effort to develop and design a one-off, custom designed two-door Rolls Royce fitting his style and taste. One year ago, Rolls-Royce presented 103EX to the world, it invoked its coachbuilding heritage to inspire its future clientele. This Vision Vehicle envisaged a world of completely personal luxury mobility where new technologies would allow every Rolls-Royce to be designed in their owners’ image, should they wish. Such a Rolls-Royce would represent the truest meaning of luxury – a personal, Bespoke motor car like no other for each individual commissioning patron. The mere idea of a modern coachbuilt Rolls-Royce was not enough for one Rolls-Royce connoisseur however. This individual approached the marque with his own idea of a two-seat Rolls-Royce that he wanted to be created in the here and now. That motor car is here, now and is christened ‘Sweptail’. In a nod to the swept-tail of certain Rolls-Royces from the 1920s, admired by the client so much, he asked Rolls-Royce to reimagine this feature on his one-off motor car. “Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of Haute Couture,” comments Giles Taylor, Director of Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “It is a Rolls-Royce designed and hand-tailored to fit a specific customer. This customer came to the House of Rolls-Royce with an idea, shared in the creative process where we advised him on his cloth, and then we tailored that cloth to him. You might say we cut the cloth for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by.”

Presenting the car to the media at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este on Saturday 27th May 2017, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “Sweptail is a truly magnificent car. It exudes the romance of travel for its own sake, and immediately places ‘Sweptail’ in the pantheon of the world’s great intercontinental tourers. Rolls-Royce’s history as the world’s leading coachbuilder is at the very core of its identity as the world’s leading luxury brand. The arrival of 103EX shone a light on the future of RollsRoyce in this field, and ‘Sweptail’ is proof, today, that Rolls-Royce is at the pinnacle of coachbuilding. We are listening carefully to our most special customers and assessing their interest in investing in similar, completely exclusive coachbuilt masterpieces. At the same time we are looking into the resources which will allow us to offer this unique service to these discerning patrons of luxury.” Through this commission, Rolls-Royce has proven once again to be the world’s leading luxury goods provider.

She is probably one of the most chic rebel designers around, with an entrepreneurial business mindset, displaying a cut above approach.

teenage rebellion at college, I wanted to create something unique with jewelry. I am also a big collector of Post-War/Contemporary art works and began dealing when I was 16; which led me to be inspired by JeanMichel Basquiat’s crown signature. I decided to interpret this into my jewelry design, as the scene I was around in New York was all about rebellion, fashion and art. The AR15 gun inspiration came from the charity work I did for my father in Africa, which donates to a small charity that protects children living in the world’s most dangerous war zones.

- What are you currently inspired by? I am currently inspired by the Knotted Gun Sculpture, which lies in New York City, “Non-Violence” (also known as “The Knotted Gun”) is a propeace sculpture by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, designed in late 1980 and inspired by the shooting death of his pal, John Lennon. It was given to the UN by the government of Luxembourg in 1988. The sculpture portrays a 45-caliber revolver with its barrel knotted into a bullet-blocking twist, a concept normally confined to 2D reality in newspaper editorial cartoons.

- Talk me through the day in the life of Lana Scolaro. - What made you decide to start a Jewellery line?

A day in the life for me is usually taking a yoga or pilates class in the early morning to start my day, i’ll then usually head back to my showroom and work on some new designs and study different materials. I’ll then usually have a meeting with a new press agency I have just hired, followed by more meetings with retailers. However, I never really know how long I will stay in one place at a time, as I have stockists in Europe which I also need to have control over, so I will spend a lot of time on a plane.

- What influenced your bold choice of guns and crowns, which adorn or shape your exceptional jewellery?

- Define Luxury?

I originally wanted to be an actress and am a great lover of classic movies. Some of my favourite films are Django and Blood Diamond which inspired my designs in a big way. Growing up in a scene of

My definition of luxury is something unnecessary but favorable for, to satisfy and ease. Something enticing but expensive, something very charming but not really needed in life.

My main talent was always design and Fine Art. I studied at Parsons the New School for Design in New York and I decided to pursue my career in design by designing fine jewelry, as my father was already in the diamond industry so I thought i’d have a bigger advantage.

SUPERYACHT 11:11 Designed by London-based Candy & Candy the new Benetti 11:11 Motor Yacht proves to be one of the finest examples of world class superyacht design and performance with superior technical, aesthetic and functional strengths. The high calibre design of this luxurious 63-metre motor yacht is characterised by her elegant lines and distinctive vertical axe bow – the second ever plumb-bow yacht designed by Benetti’s naval architects which avoids the upward push of the waves, cutting through the water for an exceptionally stable ride. This is further enhanced by the distinct shape and wide beam of her hull, which also has the advantage of increased living and storage space aboard. 11∙11 is the epitome of luxury superyacht design and this is particularly evident in the superior quality and high specification of her interiors, which provide all the comfort, functionality and innovation of the most luxurious residential home. From the principal living and entertaining spaces, to the spacious crew quarters and superbly-appointed galley, fine craftsmanship, exquisite finishes, and intricate attention to detail are at the heart of the interior and all furniture, joinery and soft furnishings are bespoke. The generous and spacious living spaces both inside and out offer softness, comfort and functionality. The Main Salon is an impressive entertaining space with its custom-made U-shape sofa, 12-seater formal dining table and calming grey colour palette, while the Sky Lounge on the Upper Deck offers a more informal lounge environment complete with bespoke cocktail bar and generous seating. An impressive lobby and staircase on the main deck features a bright Italian marble floor and bespoke balustrade, hand-crafted from marine grade stainless steel with a shimmering shagreen handrail. There are numerous opportunities for dining across the main and upper decks, but perhaps the most distinguished can be found on the upper deck aft where 14 guests can be accommodated on a bespoke backlit quartzite dining table. An outside bar crafted from over a tonne of natural Italian fluted stone and two symmetrical seating areas with custom-fitted sofas complete this exceptional entertainment space.

The living quarters aboard are further enhanced by the two luxurious owners cabins. The significantly spacious VIP Suite on the Main Deck is a full-beam cabin with six full-height portrait windows and an adjoining study / vanity area and fitted walk-in dressing room. The Master Suite enjoys an expansive 180-degree panorama over the bow, overlooking the entirely private owner’s sun deck with large jet pool and sunbathing area which stretches all the way to the bow. The Sun Deck Aft is the pre-eminent leisure area aboard, which was entirely restructured to create 15 metres of deck space for outdoor relaxation, sunbathing and entertainment. A fluted bar made of sandblasted Italian stone, fitted curved seating and a spa-inspired pool with adjacent kitchenette add continuity and function to the deck space. The most indulgent spot on the yacht comes in the form of a dedicated Spa area. The Steam Room is made entirely from pearlescent mosaic tiles with smoky quartz stones and soothing chroma therapy. The white marble Treatment Room features an adjustable massage bed and heated towel cabinet. On the lower deck, four spacious guest suites comprise two double cabins and two twin cabins. All suites benefit from a beautifully designed en-suite bathroom with Italian marble hand-selected from the quarry and bespoke Lalique crystal taps to compliment the generous basin areas. There are also powder rooms on every deck. The crew cabins are identical in size and without the disadvantage of narrowing as they near the bow, creating generous quarters for the 16-strong crew. The remaining volume is used as valuable storage space for this substantial vessel. As the yacht is designed for the owner’s family, child safety features highly in her design including rounded edges and fabric-wrapped walls and furniture, while a child’s cabin is adjacent to the Master Suite. For luxury cruising the 11:11 Yacht proves to be one of the most impressive to hit the French Riviera this up-incoming summer yachting season.

THE QUELLA COLLECTION With a bold series of exotic statement pieces, we spoke exclusively with Quella founder and Designer Rebecca Tilley about her current collection and all things lifestyle. - What made you decide to become a Jewellery Designer?

- Where is your all time favorite destination and why?

My Grandmother had a beautiful collection of vintage statement pieces that I was constantly immersed in. This fascination opened up a love of all things sartorial, and after some years studying and working in the industry I found the knowledge and confidence to be creative with some of my own jewellery designs and Quella came to life from there.

Turkey would have to be my all time favorite. Istanbul is such a magical city filled with culture, fashion and food. A hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia’s fairy chimney rock formations was an amazing personal experience, and swimming in the crystal blue waters off the coast is a must.

- What is the current collection inspired by?

- Where to next?

The Arlo collection is inspired by bright lights and big cities. I wanted to create luxe statement pieces that made the wearer feel amazing and ready to take on the town. The mix of sparkling Swarovski crystals and intricate yet feminine shapes give equal parts glam and edge to each piece.

Next is a relaxing holiday in beautiful Fiji later in the year, but New York City is always calling, so there are plans to get back there as soon as possible.

- What items could you not live without? Being from Melbourne I am a boots girl, so I would have to say that my favorite pair of ChloĂŠ boots are my go accessory. I am rarely seen without a pair of statement earrings on and my IPhone is never far from reach.

GABRIEL SCANU Through the use of drone technology emerging photographers and artists look to new heights when creating their works, offering audiences new and exciting outlooks. This proves to be the case for 20-year-old Australian photographer Gabriel Scanu, as he captures iconic Australian landscapes and subject matter through a new perspective. We spoke with Scanu to discuss his spectacular works and career plans.

-Describe a regular day?

-Where is your all time favourite travel destination?

For me every day is different. I could be extremely busy shooting or writing emails for clients or I could be relaxing and taking some time to exercise. As someone who travels a lot I often mind myself away from home or in a different country which makes everyday unique and exciting for me.

My favourite travel destination in recent times has been the West Coast of California. I loved spending time in the Big Sur area and Malibu, both amazing places found off of the Pacific Coast Highway.

-What made you decide to become a photographer? I was taught how to use a DSLR camera from a young age and started shooting photos from as early as twelve years old. I was taught by my father who is a cinematographer/ director so for me creating visuals is something that I was surrounded by from a very young age and it seemed to be a very natural progression as I grew older. -What is your favourite past times besides from taking photos? This may be an obvious answer but I love to travel and explore new places, both locally and on a global scale. I love going to the beach, relaxing and spending time with friends.

-If you had a bucket list what would be on it? My bucket list would probably never end if I had a physical copy of one, but a few of the things I would love to do include: Skydiving in Hawaii, ATV riding in Greece & visiting every continent. -If you were to go for a winter or summer vacation this holiday season which would you choose? I would definitely choose a summer vacation! I spent a lot of time in Europe this time last year and it was winter, so I definitely think I’ll go for some heat this time around.

MR MOUDZ He is one of the most influential dubai-based men’s fashion bloggers Mahmoud Sidani heads proves to be a trendsetter with a little black book of international designer clients and celebrity friends. We spoke with Sidani exclusively.

-What made you decide to get into Blogging?

-Who are your go-to designers?

Funny story actually – I was initially working at Level Shoe District in Dubai where I met designers, bloggers, celebrities and I think it just happened by luck. I was always approached to work with brands but couldn’t because of the conflict with Level Shoes. And this one particular respected brand kept approaching me and finally after I threw a ridiculous price at them, they came back to me and said “deal”. And so I threw this big event, they expected 80 people, and I brought over 400 of Dubai’s hottest people and ever since then it started buzzing. So then I was like, wait a minute let me see how this goes and I’ll do it for a few months and make some money – next thing I know, the money was just rolling in, working with names like Louis Vuitton, Dior to Four Seasons. At that point, I launched MrMoudz.com working only with professional photographers. It’s really nice to be recognised in Dubai as there is really only a few top bloggers and we all know each other and have different styles.

Honestly for me, right now Off-White and Fear of God would be my favourite. I mean if you are going high-end I am really loving Louis Vuitton, Dior and Balenciaga, what they create is truly remarkable.

-You currently live in Dubai, how would you say the fashion scene compares to cities like Paris, New York, Milan and London? I think over the last 2 years Dubai has really become a fashion destination with so many amazing designers who are truly talented and it’s a shame their not given more attention!

-Name your favourite time-piece? Shockingly I’m not into watches, I have a couple expensive watches, but I find them bulky. I mean I have friends who have collections of like million dollar watches but it’s just not me.

-What is one item you couldn’t live without? If you’re talking about fashion items, it would be the classic Balmain Jacket. You can literally throw it with anything – it’s a go-to piece.

-How would you define true luxury? I feel like luxury is a status. It about maintaining a certain lifestyle. It is the highest peak of where you are going and being recognised.

-How would you describe your personal style? You know what, my style really depends on my mood – ranging from being chill and not dressing up, I mean I love sweats and sneakers. I would say my style is slightly androgynous where I am inspired by women’s style, in terms of what I’ll see women wearing and I will try and incorporate it into my look.

-Who are some of your favourite up-incoming designers? Arwa Al Bannawi and Madiyah Al Sharqi are truly amazing!

-You often travel for work and leisure. What would be your favourite trip to date? My favourite trip would be Capri where one of my dear friends recently got married. With parties every night and boat trips to Positano, amazing friends and incredible memories.

-Where to next? I am going to South Africa soon, where I have been dying to go to. Tokyo is also on the list!

DEBORAH COMTE-LIAIGRE

Recognised as one of the world’s finest interior design Firms, The Studio of LIAIGRE is renowned for working with clients such as Calvin Klein, Larry Gagosian and Rupert Murdoch offering simplistic yet highly detailed spaces. Through which Christian’s wife Deborah, saw an opportunity to expand the brand, offering a “design service” whereby clients simply requiring furniture options and interior decoration were able to engage with Liaigre designers to create impressive residences. Such projects have included the Munich Apartment whereby the client was looking for a refurbishment, focusing on creating a monochrome interior featuring the client’s favourite colours, beige, white and grey. We spoke with Deborah Liaigre exclusively about the design service and all things Liaigre.

-What made you decide to become a designer and take on the Artistic Director role at LIAIGRE? I never thought I would be anything other than an Interior Architect. I guess my desire began when I was a 6-year-old child who loved oil painting and playing at designing spaces. Just after I graduated from Penninghen in 1999, I joined Christian Liaigre in the showrooms and immersed myself into the Liaigre style. I then created the Design Service, a custom-made solutions for Interior Decoration which since then has significantly grown and represents today one of our leading activities. My passion for materials and colours has also driven me to enhance the brand by creating and developing home accessories, textiles and rugs.

-What are the fundamentals of a LIAIGRE designed space? When the company was established 35 years ago, Christian recognised a very clear vocabulary around the art of living not just furniture design. Liaigre’s DNA is built around clean lines, perfect proportions and finest materials. Liaigre was the first name to draft “effortless chic” interiors… a philosophy of well-being and comfort, but not forgetting beauty and elegance.

-Tell us about the Design Service and how it came about? The highly nourishing experience I first had in our showrooms made me realise that there was a gap existing between the showrooms, where you buy pieces in a retail way, and the Studio which handles both private and hospitality Interior Architecture for which everything is designed. I therefore created the “Design Service”, a department dedicated to custom made solutions in Interior Decoration. Bespoke is

at the core of everything we do at Liaigre. The Design Service pushes the boundaries beyond furniture display as we create ambiances, playing with furniture from the collection (or sometimes designed on purpose) and special finishes, textiles, art pieces.

-What are the kinds of projects you are currently working on? I am currently working on two very exciting Interior Decoration projects. The first, is a private house in Mexico city in a very typical Mexican style. I am thrilled to work on the contrasts between the rich and colorful Mexican culture and our French sense of elegance and proportion. The other project is a penthouse in the mythical Edition building in Miami. Here I am designing an interior and three terraces playing with a large space and the intense light of the area. Each project is a totally unique, creative reflection - I never rely on preestablished concepts.

-What are you currently inspired by? I am very much attracted to Elm wood - natural or lacquered. I am always imagining where I will be using it next.

-Where and how do you find inspiration? Although I do enjoy strolling through flea markets and visiting antique dealers, I find most of my inspiration in paintings – especially in their colours. Lately I have been inspired by the work of Cy Tombly.

-Where is your all-time favourite destination? Japan, the city of Kyoto in particular.

-How would you define luxury? By time. Liaigre is a luxury house with a very special and unusual relationship to time. We create and draft perfect pieces and projects, without rush or constraint. We are extremely lucky that our clients understand and respect this path. We have a main goal of absolute quality - both in the design and in the making.

-What made you decide to become an actor/model?

-What projects are you currently working on?

I’ve always had interest in the entertainment industry! There’s nothing more rewarding than channeling a character and finding yourself within it. Both are art forms that take a lot of focus and energy. It’s now a hobby as opposed to job.

Currently, I’m putting more time and effort into my YouTube channel. There’s a few projects I’m developing in the unscripted space, but can’t say anything quite yet.

-What would be your dream role? My dream role would have to be the joker! I love that character!

-Who’s one actor you’d love to work with? I would absolutely love to work with the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio! That would be a dream. One day..

Positivity and happiness are the vibes I want to include in all my videos! I always try to include some form of a takeaway; even though it’s in docufollow format. There’s so much content on YouTube to digest, so I try to provide my audience with something original. It also helps to live on the West Coast where there’s beautiful scenic things to share.

-How would you describe your fashion style? My fashion style is best described as street/comfort wear! I remember when sweatpants were a weird thing; now people try all different creative ways of incorporating them into their looks. For me, there’s nothing better than looking good and feeling comfy. Brands I love include H&M, ASOS, Saint Laurent, among many others.

-If you had to wear one designer for the rest of your life who would it be? I’m not one to wear designers very often but if I had to choose, I’d go with Saint Laurent!

-Where is your all time-favourite travel destination thus far? My all-time favorite travel destination has been Rome, Italy! I absolutely love Europe! Also love a good tropical vacation.

THE HERMITAGE, VAUCLUSE Undergoing an immense transformation by Sydney based architectural firm Hess and Hoen, the Iconic Hermitage Estate in Vaucluse reveals a refreshed new look interior and a vibrant new grounds and swimming pool pavilion. We spoke exclusively with Brian Hess about the project. -What were you inspired by when envisioning the Hermitage project? Definitely the history and location. The old Gothic sandstone building, perched high atop a cliff face overlooking Sydney harbour was breathtaking. There was much to reference and much to respect. During the process, there were constant moments of surprise when discovering previously unused areas of the property. Responding to this in real time was really exciting. Not every aspect of the design could be fully realised prior to building beginning. There was the ability to design, assess and reassess along the way. The result becomes much stronger I believe when taking this approach. A strong vision is a must, but allowing moments of serendipity most certainly creates a great project. The project called for texture, pattern and use of natural materials to connect all the elements harmoniously and with a sense of timelessness.

they will use the space etc), I don’t even think about how it’s going to look. My projects are not concept driven or trend driven. Nor are they influenced by style. They are driven by the need to work with the highest of quality (and in many cases natural) materials whose essential qualities, humans can connect with. Materials that age and patina with use and time. The projects must look better with age. Understanding that space needs to nurture is so important. Understanding nostalgia, memory and a sense of place is essential. Homes are where we create memories. The investment is in the future, creating memories with family and friends – for the long term. With this in mind, residential design becomes more than what is on trend – it transcends time.

-What other projects are you currently working on? -What was the brief? The brief was pragmatic. The layout of the two level building needed to be completely flipped on its head. It wasn’t working for the client. Kitchen was relocated to ground level. The bedroom now takes pride where the kitchen once existed. This pragmatic approach continued until the internal programme was just right for the owner – someone who had lived in the house for a long time and understood it well. With all this knowledge in hand, we knew what to do. Works involved part demolition of a 1960’s extension (which was added to the old gothic structure during the 60’s) with the integration of new openings, walls, doors and windows. The internal finishes were replaced along with new fixtures and fittings throughout. Previously concealed, old sandstone walls were integrated back into the overall design – and celebrated! Internal layout reconfigured to provide for the day to day living requirements of the owner. External works included extensive landscaping. Once we felt we had it right with space, light and a sense of order, we began to look at how we would approach the feel of the space. Essentially, this is very much a reflection of the owner…the person using these spaces. How they use the space, what they use it for, and how they want to feel when in each space. Careful selection of materials, matched with an understanding of how humans respond to them becomes the driver of this next phase. Until I establish what materials I am going to work with (based on client responses to how

A large private residence in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney. The residence has a colorful history with parts of the building important to the Heritage of the area and it’s architectural typology. Another dream project.

-Where is your all time favourite destination and why? I would have to say Cavas Wine Lodge just outside of the town of Mendoza - a short flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina. For the location, architecture, food and the wine. The view from the lodges to the snow covered Andes Mountains is breathtaking.

THE REVY BY BLAINEY NORTH Designed by one of Australia’s most prominent designers, Blainey North, the Revy in Sydney’s Pyrmont has been revitalised by the leading interior design powerhouse to become an innovative reinterpretation of classic architecture and planning. Originally designed by Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon in 1912, the building had served the Royal Australian Navy for close to 100 years. Thus the approach required journeying into the past to discover the present, following a meticulous order of measurement, the character of the building has been restored to allow contemporary, luxurious living spaces to cohesively form a part of bygone era building. “This was a place where precision and measurement mattered, where craftsmanship and detailing were explored in the context of the highly

functional and the mechanical. It is a masculine, robust building with architectural gravitas and it was our job to celebrate that aspect while imbuing it with a sophisticated, contemporary feel”. Says Blainey. Developing a concept around a “gilded transformation”, the idea of creating a contemporary shell within an existing structure meant a new age incarnation was conceived – whereby a sense of “almost touching” celebrated the magic of the space between the old and the new. This is seen within the interiors such as the precise panel detailing framed by champagne gold metal, raised ceilings and herringbone flooring.

HARLEY WOOLVERN Inspired by brutalism and androgyny, contemporary jewelry designer, Harley Woolven is challenging conventional design offering sophisticated consumers hand crafted minimalist pieces resembling the organic and sharp forms of his surroundings. Based in Manly Beach Sydney, Woolven’s pieces are made of Australian sterling silver, with his latest collection Broken Valley featuring sharp, jiggered lines and textures reflecting the Broken Valley Region within the Australian landscape.

-What made you decide to become a jewelry designer and launch Black De Ville? I have always loved designing. Having the ability to put your own twist on an existing style or develop an entirely new concept is something really exciting to me. From a very young age I was drawn to creation and development. The ability to create your own story or concept is almost romantic to me. Launching Black De Ville was very much to try fill a void in fashion. Fashion is predominantly defined by sex, Homme vs femme. I wanted to create something that would add and contribute to the androgynous fashion progression. -Tell us about your latest collection “Broken Valley 16” is the latest collection. It is a collection that was developed through environmental emersion and brutalism concepts. Drawing inspiration from the Australian mountains, Broken Valley is

a sharp, jagged and contrasting collection that is a lot darker than anything I’ve developed before. It is definitely treading the thin line between wearable versus unwearable but that is really something I want to do, I want each piece to be independent to any other ring and really stand out making a raw statement. -How would you describe your personal style? Dark and drapery. I only really ever work in Blacks and sometimes white. I love the timeless mystery and romance connected to the tone black. I really like to push the boundaries on the androgynous front as well. This particular style isn’t so familiar within Australia so sometimes needs to be toned down a bit…

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Creating a bold and dramatic space proves to be something of second nature to interior designer Greg Natale with his latest Melbourne project offering its owners a monochromatic palette juxtaposed with a collection of luxe furniture and art. We spoke with Natale about the project. -Tell us about the Melbourne Project and brief? The brief for this two-storey, seven-bedroom house was to create a moody, sophisticated residence featuring an abundance of timber panelling. A palette of mink-stain timber, charcoal greys, mauves and burgundies with accents of teal and burnished gold helped to achieve this. Timber appears in several rooms, balanced by softer palette and textural choices. In the study, an expanse of timber panelling is offset by grey and black in the chairs and patterned rug, maintaining the room’s elegant masculine vibe while highlighting the wood’s tones. In the rumpus and family rooms, slatted timber ceilings enrich the space, their lines echoed in the family room by gathered linen curtains for a juxtaposition of hard and soft finishes. Contrast continues in the bookshelves, where organic ceramics temper the strong angles of the wood. Opposite the family room, aged mirror tiles and bistro-style shelving in the kitchen lend an atmospheric gleam to the space. The entrance to the house is a celebration of balance and contrast that heralds the dynamics within. The angles in the floor tiles, ceiling panels, bay windows, seats and doors are offset by the circular ottoman, striking chandelier and vast organic-patterned rug. The sweeping staircase that swirls around a Kelly Wearstler Soufflé chair leads to more decadent curves in the living-room sofa, armchairs and coffee tables, the cosy bedroom and study chairs, and the luxe bath. While smoky tones prevail in the design, the dramatic black and white of the entrance recurs in the bathroom, where a wall of glossy black Bisazza tiles seem to shimmer with streaks of light, contrasting and highlighting the white oval Apaiser bath and white oval ceiling to increase the illusion of space. Elsewhere, luxe greys and mauves, and the occasional pop of teal, bring a brooding balance to the warm timbers, with burnished accessories adding a rich gleam throughout.

-What is the home inspired by? The client owned a number of artworks, which served as the starting point and inspiration for many spaces in the interior design. On the upstairs landing, two benches provide an elegant resting spot and serve to anchor a large pair of paintings by Jo Davenport. In the living room, the striking gold artwork on the wall by Richard Blackwell from Flinders Lane Gallery is echoed in various elements such as an Oly Studio mirror, two Porta Romana side tables and a Salvador Dali lamp. The grand dimensions of the reception room allow paintings to be displayed to great effect, while the charcoal stucco-painted walls and décor pick up and highlight their monochromatic scheme. The size of the house, too, has inspired its design, with several vignettes created to ensure warm, inviting living spaces. A large house presents challenges in terms of establishing cohesion, so the consistent use of

timber and tones such as charcoal provide one key link, punctuated by mauve, burgundy, gold and teal. Clever plays on proportion are another defining characteristic: in the living room, a large Arne Jacobsen Egg chair and two smaller Swan chairs create a witty mix; in the dining room, panels of grey grasscloth wallpaper break up the white walls; in the master bedroom, clusters of furniture create ‘breakout areas’ around the Minotti bed; in the bathroom, a wall of tiny black Bisazza tiles spanning the white oval ceiling and Apaiser bath below offer their own contrast via size, shape and palette. The grand reception room at the entrance also features a dynamic contrast of shapes, patterns, heights and pieces – a dramatic preview of the house’s aesthetic.

-What made you decide to become an interior designer? I think I’ve always wanted to be an interior designer – really, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in interior design. When I was young, my family didn’t travel much, so I explored the world through what I saw on screen. The incredible settings for TV shows and movies opened up a world of creativity for me – it made me think that anything was possible if you had the imagination and drive. When I came to study interior design, I found inspiration in the works of the late English designer David Nightingale Hicks and Danish designer Verner Panton – both were masters of layering bold patterns and colours. I also loved the vivid hues and geometrics of the postmodernist Italian design group Memphis. Even today, these continue to inspire me.

-How would you describe Australian design? Given that we are such a rich blend of cultures, I think it’s natural that we’re connected to different international styles and design trends. But what is unique about Australian design is the particular local character and aesthetic we bring. Because our lifestyle is largely centred around the beach and the outdoors, I think we tend to have a more casual, laid-back approach to living. As a result, our designs are often more pared back, with a focus on maximising access to light and creating a clever flow between indoor and outdoor living.

-What is the essence of a Greg Natale designed home? A sophisticated, tailored and carefully edited space with a focus on layering. I’m known for my strong use of bold patterns and colours, and my love of monochromes accented by pops of bright hues. To me, the process of editing is vital, so I’m constantly assessing a space to ensure balance, contrast and a cohesive effect. And I will always champion the importance of layering, where all the key elements – walls, ceilings and floors, furniture, soft furnishings and accessories – are built up to create a warm, welcoming environment. I believe layering and editing are crucial because they consider the big picture of a design, where no decision is isolated, and where each piece, finish and fabric has a role in the room and relates to the next.

VINCENT VAN DUYSEN Recognised as the minimalist godfather, Belgium based architect, Vincent Van Duysen has spent his entire life creating beautifully simple designs, using pure and tactile materials to create timeless design. We spoke with the world-renowned designer about all things design and lifestyle.

-When and what made you decide to become a designer?

-What are the fundamentals of a Vincent Van Duysen design?

My parents educated me across many different arts as a child – architecture, painting, theatre – and my father had incredibly intuitive artistic skills. These were the primary influences for my appreciation and understanding of beauty and, from a young age, fostered a natural talent for creativity. Also, within my parent’s circle of friends there was a professor from the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Ghent who explained to me that the enduring quality of architecture was that it covered so many aspects of all of the applied arts I had been exposed to.

As I explained before, a balance between purity and content is needed. The richness of the space is elevated undoubtedly by exquisite details like velvety plaster finishes, parched wood textures, and misty hues.

-How would you describe your unique style and aesthetic? I love to work with layers and contrast to achieve a sort of warm sensuality. In that sense I’m not into minimalism. I rather have sober interiors with soul. On the other hand, it’s not always about a multitude of elements and materials. My attention goes out to a pureness in aesthetics that I discover and got inspired through my travels. In fact, inspiration comes naturally from travelling, conversations, exhibitions, people, everyday life.

-Tell us about your personal residence? My home is a constant inspiration for me. I worked with a very Belgian palette that combined roughly woven textures but also very neutral smooth surfaces such as plaster, wide popular floorboards, and Belgian Bluestone. I wanted to refer to the rich architectural history of the house but also to create a serene space in which modern art and furniture pieces could sit comfortably and feel timeless. -Who are you influenced by? I am very influenced by modernist architects whose work was a crossover of fluidity, sensuality, and material substance; Luis Barragán, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Dom Hans van der Laan, Peter Zumthor, Mies Van Der Rohe to name some.

-What projects are you currently working on? -Where is your all-time favourite destination? I am currently working in a few private residences in USA, Portugal, France, Belgium and Italy. A Hotel and also service flats for elderly people in Antwerp, Belgium. Offices in London and Milan. I continue my collaboration with Molteni as creative director along with new product & furniture designs for many brands in Europe & USA. Lastly, I am planning to publish a sequel of my monograph “Complete works”.

Places I have particularly enjoyed visiting recently would be Morocco, Portugal, Argentina, Japan and the United States. I am very drawn to the spirit of life and it is something I like to see reflected in my work – it is also something I always search for in my travels.

KELLY WEARSTLER Founding her design business back in the 1990’s, Kelly Wearstler has quickly become a global luxury lifestyle brand renowned for her distinctive designs and sophisticated soulful vibe. We spoke exclusively with the designer to the stars about all things Kelly Wearstler. - When did you realise you were destined to become an Interior Designer? I have always been drawn to design. My mother was a designer and she took me to antique shows and auctions as a girl, educating my eye from a young age. Design is largely intuitive for me and it incorporates so many of my passions. I have an endless curiosity and am thrilled to design environments for people to expand their experiences within and add an element of adventure to their lives. It is truly my dream job. - What are you currently inspired by?

several incredible residential projects for private clients globally. My studio is launching new collections of fabric and wallcovering, tiles, rugs, lighting and furniture this fall and early next year. - You work with a number of high-profile celebrities, who has impressed you with their personal style? All of my clients are so educated and unique. I truly am impressed by all of them. My clients are my greatest muse – each project is a reflection of their distinctive personalities and personal style. - How did your collection of accessories and furniture come about?

Inspiration is everywhere. Art, architecture, fashion, film, graphic arts, landscapes, nature. I always remain open to new colors, forms, textures, artists and furniture whenever I am traveling, being aware of my surroundings, and doing research, whether it is reading a book or exploring at a museum. That allows me to find the beauty in all that I see and translate it into my work. The innovation, boldness and expression of artists both classic and contemporary has immeasurable influence on my aesthetic. Some of my greatest influences are Pierre Cardin, Oscar Niemeyer, Carlo Scarpa and Louis Kahn.

What projects are you currently working on? I am currently at work on a new hotel brand – Proper Hotels. Each property is an ode to its city, with layers of distinctive vintage and contemporary furnishings and authentic local influence. Our debut hotel launched in San Francisco and I am in the midst of designing the next three Proper hotels and residential properties (including eight restaurants, bars and lounges), opening in Downtown Los Angeles, Austin (Texas) and Santa Monica, California. I am also working on

Interior design has fueled all of our product design. There’s an inherent cross-pollination in my studio; architecture and interiors influence our art pieces, home décor, lighting, furniture and vice versa. Often on projects we ended up creating pieces from scratch simply out of not being able to find the exact vibe on the market. I was first approached by Bergdorf Goodman to design a line of home accessories in 2006 and it started out quite curated and small. Over time our lifestyle brand grew organically to include furniture, rugs, lighting, fabrics & wallcoverings and multiple partnerships and collaborations with some of the most respected global brands across the luxury market space. - What is your favourite room in your home? Our family room. We love to watch films together. There is a huge sofa to all curl up together with the dogs. For me the essence of a home is love.

DEBORAH SYMOND O’NEIL Over four short years Deborah Symond has grown a fashion empire challenging the pre-norms of traditional womenswear, carving an athleisure focused retail experience both online and in-store. We spoke with the savy and super-chic businesswoman about the journey of building a thriving business and the future of Mode Sportif. - Describe a regular day in the life of Deborah Symond? No day is ever the same for me which I really enjoy. Whist I crave routine in certain areas of my life, like exercise, I enjoy variation in my work week. I start my day early with a 6am spin class at Cycology Club. It is an endorphin filled workout that leaves me feeling positive and motivated for the day. For the first part of my work day, I park myself at Room 10 in Potts Point. I order the same thing every morning, smashed avocado on toast, like a true millennial! I catch up on my emails at the café and then head into my office at the Intersection in Paddington. As the director of my business I oversee all departments, whether it be working with the marketing team, buying team, retail teams or finance teams which means every day is different. I love visiting my two boutiques in Sydney and interacting with our lovely clients. For me, spending time styling outfits in store is so rewarding! After work, I make the most of Sydney’s amazing food scene, catching up with friends for dinner and drinks is the perfect way to finish my day. - Tell us about Mode Sportif and how it came about? Combining my passions for wellness and fashion drove me to launch ModeSportif.com four years ago in 2014. I drew upon my experience in the fashion industry working across retail, e-commerce and buying where I decided to launch a destination delivering a 24/7 wardrobe with a curated mix of relaxed fashion and elevated sportswear. I started with the online store and have since launched a concept boutique in Paddington and our Flagship Boutique in Double Bay. It has been an incredibly exciting journey. - You recently opened Mode Sportif’s second store in Double Bay, what are your future plans for the brand? I opened Mode Sportif’s flagship boutique in August of this year in Sydney’s Double Bay. It has been an exciting opportunity for us to showcase a larger range of brands and styles as well as provide further styling services to our clients. The beautiful fit out designed by Poco Designs is the perfect environment for us to display our edit of fashion

and activewear. The boutique wraps around a retro inspired living room setting which allows clients to settle in and relax in store. Mode Sportif’s brand offering is continuing to grow, with many new exciting labels due to arrive in-store soon. - Who are you currently inspired by? Scandinavian Street style provides the most fashion inspiration for me. It’s the perfect platform where people take risks and make statements and often it is the brave layering and bold colours we see outside the shows, that influences designers and consumers the most. - How would you describe your personal fashion style? My personal style is playful, energetic and easy to wear. I like a highlow balance and am not afraid to wear lots of colour. I build my base wardrobe with well-cut classics and I pair these back with seasonal style injections to create a fun and fresh look. Comfort definitely plays a part in my daily style so relaxed fits, sneakers and kitten heels are often my go to!

- You often travel internationally, where has been your all-time favourite destination? My all-time favourite destination is Portofino in Italy. It has to be the most romantic city in the world, the colours of the gorgeous buildings, the charming and buzzy port and sensationally delicious food, make it my ultimate holiday destination. I recently shared 24 hours there with my husband on our honeymoon, it is our special place. - Where to next? Next stop is New Zealand! I am visiting the beautiful Huka Lodge, I can’t wait.

ITALIAN MODERNISM / DAVID HICKS Inspired by the age of cocktail parties and glamorous entertaining, this inner city family home in Melbourne offers liveable luxury able to cater to formal gatherings or a quiet night in. We spoke exclusively with designer David Hicks.

What was the brief? The clients on this house wanted something streamlined and sophisticated yet very liveable. With a large young family, they required some grown up areas that were more glamorous for entertaining and some more casual family areas to hang out in and relax. They wanted these disparate zones to have a different feel yet be able to visually flow. What were you inspired by? Our main aim was to create two distinct zones. We wanted the more formal, or grown up areas to be luxurious and chic so based this scheme loosely on mid-century Italian modernism. We wanted to evoke the era of the cocktail party, when the world was becoming modern and more chic. The entry to the house had a European villa feel to it, so this was carried through. A darker more dramatic colour palette was used to offer a more sumptuous layered feel of high end lux. A more relaxed, sandy feel was carried through into the family areas and inspired, on contrast, by coastal Italy, with whitewashed walls, concrete flooring and white sheers – providing a much more laid back vibe. What are the fundamentals of a David Hicks home? The fundamentals of a David Hicks designed home are that of the client’s vision. We like to help clients create something special in which they can retreat, entertain and relax in. Our core principles are making the flow and layout work for the client’s needs, the bones of the

project if you like. Upon this we layer the materials and detail and then the decorative - which includes soft furnishings, feature lighting and window treatments. This layering, not only of design but of process, creates a cohesive result that is tailored to the client’s needs. Our solutions are classic, high quality and very sophisticated. Where is your all-time favourite travel destination? I love the island of Capri. This beautiful Italian island is very chic and charming. You really feel like you are somewhere truly glamorous yet relaxed. It is an island of contradiction which is fascinating to me. How would you define luxury? Luxury for me is quality and that can be quality in sleep, food, clothing or travel. I love anything in life that has a high quality about it and it does not have to be expensive. True quality can be as simple as a perfect glass of champagne or an amazing piece of art.

Reichman commented: “AM37 is a pure translation of the Aston Martin DNA into an entirely new maritime concept. The powerboat reflects our values in terms of power, beauty and soul. The most important attribute for Aston Martin is the design language and proportion, we have transferred this DNA into AM37. It was important to us when considering this project to make sure that the boat design was as beautiful and timeless as our cars, the AM37 is a striking boat with fantastic proportion and elegance.”

At the helm, the AM37’s carbon fibre dashboard echoes styling elements from Aston Martin’s most advanced sports cars. It includes fine leather with functional features, such as the steering wheel, throttle handles and joystick in polished metals. The boat’s navigation, control monitor and entertainment systems are all integrated, with advanced multimedia functions. CEO for Quintessence Yachts, Mariella Mengozzi said: “It’s been an exciting journey and we have relished partnering with Aston Martin on such a special project that blends craftsmanship with futuristic technology – the perfect mix for this unique powerboat. We took on the challenge to create a true revolution on the water and an extraordinary powerboat, and I’m delighted to present the AM37, a new way of experiencing life at sea”.

THE BMW I8 ROADSTER Since launching the BMW I8, the European car manufacturer has shaken up the luxury motorvehicle industry with the world’s highest selling plug-in hybrid sports cars, since its launch in 2014. The new BMW i8 Roadster proves to take eco-friendly driving to new heights in innovation, technology, speed and comfort. The open-top two-seater with electrically operated soft-top adds a whole new sensation of freedom to the combination of locally emission-free mobility and high-calibre performance. It opens the door to virtually silent motoring with zero CO2 emissions, bringing an extra edge of purity to the experience of open-top Sheer Driving Pleasure. Like the new BMW i8 Coupe, the new BMW i8 Roadster is based on the LifeDrive vehicle architecture with aluminium chassis and carbon-fibrereinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The further optimised BMW eDrive technology employed in both models comprises a high-voltage battery with significantly expanded cell capacity and energy content, and an electric motor generating a higher peak output. The result is a noticeable increase in dynamic performance, operating range and the amount of driving possible using purely the electric drive system.

The BMW i8 Roadster carries over the BMW I design language into another vehicle concept, and is awash with individual highlights that radiate elegance and fire the emotions. The soft-top roof has a visual lightness to go with its low physical weight and serves as a defining element of the silhouette in reinforcing the road-hugging impression made by the car’s low centre of gravity. The body’s dynamic wedge shape can also be best appreciated when viewing the two-seater in profile.
