Don’t forget to bring your bikes, blankets and bathing suits!

T

he Leisure Services Department was pleased with the success of last year’s venue in and around the Fernie Aquatic Centre and feels this year’s event will be even better. We plan to move in closer to the grassy areas surrounding the venue in case of extreme heat and to make your day even more enjoyable. Make sure to bring your blanket to stake out your spot on the grass.

Fernie kids are such big summer bikers so we wanted to provide an opportunity to incorporate some events centered around biking into the day. Our biking event sponsors are Gear Hub and the Fernie Mountain Bike Club and they are planning lots of fun in and around the Dirt Bike Jump Park at 2 p.m.

The other big addition to the day is lots of water sports! The Fernie Elks Club starts off the day down at Maiden Lake with their 4th Annual Cardboard Boat Race at 11 a.m. We will have the Splash Park running all day long for your enjoyment. Fernie Leisure Services is offering a FREE Public Swim from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with our exciting new Inflatable in the water for the very first time.

Little Me Playcare will be hosting a kids tent with a GO FISH Tank and a Bubble Blow Barrel. If you are over at the kids tent for some fun crafts sponsored by Creative Minds Pre-School you can have your young ones make an RCMP hat. We will have an outdoor sprinkler park set-up so kids can keep cool. Mountain Opus School of Music will join us as well to put some rhythm into the day. Bouncy houses and games keep kids moving all day long. Another new addition to the day is a Dog Agility Demo on the west lawn by Pine Ave. Don’t forget to browse through the many vendors at the first Mountain Market of the season. Again bring your blankets to sit on our grassy areas or seating is available under the shade tent to enjoy the non-stop entertainment we have planned. This year there are more food vendors so plan to stay into the evening. Refreshments provided by the Fernie Roller Derby League. Don’t forget the Fireworks at dusk and remember your sun screen and drink lots of water! As is always the case many people have volunteered to give their time to plan and execute this community event, we couldn’t do it without you! The Leisure Services Department would like to thank all the volunteers and the organization they represent for their input and effort. A big shout out to our Banner Sponsor this year Ann Zweerink of Ann’s Your Independent Grocer and the many other sponsors that help

us make our little town in the Rocky Mountains shine. To you, our community, please enjoy Canada Day in Fernie with your family and friends and take a moment to reflect on what makes each and everyone one of us truly Canadian. Sharon Switzer, Leisure Services Department/City of Fernie

MUSIC AT THE CELEBRATION

W

ith non-stop entertainment on the stage all day, the music never stops at the Canada Day celebrations. This year, seven amazing and very different bands will keep the crowds grooving to tunes and tapping their feet.

The Doggone Brothers Clayton Parsons & Michael Hepher

T

his Kootenay duo is a recent side-project of Clayton Parsons (The Good ‘Ol Goats) and Michael Hepher (Redgirl, As The Crow Flies). Both seasoned musicians in the area, Clay and Mike crossed paths at a mutual friends’ birthday party and ended up jamming the night away. That night of jamming turned into a regular thing that they’ve named The Doggone Brothers. The music is distinctly ‘grassy, with fishing, hunting and camping themes throughout their set of original and hillbilly cover tunes. Clay jumps back and forth between guitar and dobro while Mike picks the mandolin and guitar. They are sure to entertain as they keep it fun and loose while duelling back and forth with their respective axes. For more information check out Facebook.com/doggonebrothers

Thar Be Dragons

T

Good Ol’ Goats

S

tarting their journey in a music room in high school, The Good Ol’ Goats have fine-tuned their initial discovery of folk into a matured alternative style that leaves you wanting more. With the revival of folk in today’s music scene, a new generation of fans is eager to discover what folk has to offer. The Good Ol’ Goats have stepped in, leaving the typical folk stereotype behind and have reached a level this generation is excited about hearing. The Goats maturing sound boasts instrumental additions such as the dobro and the trumpet, and lyrics that focus on people and their emotions. You can hear the range and passion in their array of songs with pieces that have haunting harmonies and achingly beautiful lyrics and others that will have your feet stomping and hands clapping. This six-piece alternative folk band has grown so much over the last year, they have gained and lost members and have transformed their sound time and time again. Nonetheless their purpose stays the same: to create music that embodies their own feelings towards music, a feeling of family and community. With life stories involving coming of age in a basement jamming with a bass, holidays surrounded by family gathered around a guitar, Pink Floyd CDs and school choirs, music is in these young men and women’s blood and bones. Having chances to play with bands such as Scenic Route to Alaska, Shred Kelly, and The Great Lake Swimmers, and with successes like coming second in CBC’s nationwide Searchlight Contest and winning Best Roots and Blues Album in the Kootenay Music Awards, The Good Ol’ Goats have big plans for their future. These plans include touring around Western Canada and releasing an album that exemplifies their unique lyrical and instrumental style through new expressive and dynamic songs. With a bright future ahead of them, The Good Ol’ Goats continue to acknowledge their front porch folk roots, while bringing their own alternative spin to the genre. The one thing that will never change for this band is their love of playing music, and even more, their love of connecting and showing their fans a good time.

har Be Dragons is a musical project started by Hartt Goldman in Toronto and moved to the mountains of Fernie in 2012. Within weeks of arriving in Fernie, Hartt encountered Zac Barrett playing fiddle to a pack of “Happy Hounds” out on the trails. The two have been playing as a duo or band ever since at venues like the Royal Jam night (hosted by Zac), the Fernie Hotel Open Stage (hosted by Hartt), up at the ski hill, The Loaf and other venues around the Elk Valley. Barrett’s amazing musical instincts on multiple instruments are a compelling complement to Goldman’s compositions. The duo play genres ranging from the rock originals off Thar Be Dragons 2012 album “Got a Light?” to newer roots songs written here in the Elk Valley plus unique takes on many cover songs. TBD duo’s Canada day performance will focus on Canadian songs with a special nod to the Tragically Hip.

The Relief Committee

T

he Relief Committee is Tim “Black Jack” Ketchum on Guitars and Vocals Cam “Rindog” Kennedy on Guitars and vocals, Patty “PJ” Burnett on Bass and Dave Buliziuk on Drums. They play catchy classic rock and originals that anyone can groove to.

Hark Raving Sirens

T

he Hark Raving Sirens apply their stark raving stylings to a myriad of cover songs, playing acoustic guitar, ukulele, and harmonica, and ever blending their voices. As such, audiences can expect a fresh, harmonious take on classic songs from the 1920’s to today, including jazzy swing, folk, twangy country, rock and modern pop songs.

TOPO

T

OP’O is Fernie’s favourite host and toe tapping performer. Top’O writes catchy storytelling tunes that have hooks that keep you singing them long after you have been shuffled out onto the street.

The Wild Romantics

E

van Miller and Aleisha Kalina walked the same small-town high school halls long before they ever started making music together. Although they missed each other on the graduation stage by four years, fate couldn’t keep “The Wild Romantics” apart. Armed with energetic rock n’ roll hooks, haunting lyrics and harmonies, their music has drawn comparisons to the playful, intimate country/folk of Johnny Cash and June Carter and the energetic, southern driven rock n’ roll in the spirit of The White Stripes. The Wild Romantics put immense value on being able to share their stories of love, life, loss and learning by taking their own experiences and creating stories that audiences relate to and can take home with them. Although the band only formed in 2013, they have already stunned audiences with their passionate performances, playing with such acts as Wake Owl, Head of the Herd, Jon and Roy and We Are The City. In 2014, at just a year old, they were accepted into The Peak Performance Project Top 12 Finalists and things took off. Since then, The Wild Romantics have played such festivals as Rifflandia, CMW, NXNE, released their debut EP ‘She Could Tell’ and were most recently named The Zone 91.3’s Band of the Month for January, 2016.

his year we are making RCMP hats. Cut out the

shape of the hat. Next cut out the maple leaf, colour it and glue it on to the front of the hat, glue on the brown hat band. Attach all of this to the band that is sized for your head. To make it extra goofy you can cut out a beaver tail, colour it and have it stapled to the back. The other craft is a fan to keep you cool on a hot day. Cut out the circle, decorate it with stickers and crayons and glue a popsicle stick to it for the handle. Let it dry and you will be the coolest dude at the fair. Enjoy Canada Day from Heather Skaien at Creative Minds Preschool and Fernie Forest School Society!

Where are you from? Phil and I met in London, England and were living on the Isle of Portland on the South coast of England before we came to Canada permanently.

How long have you been in Canada? We arrived in Vancouver on July 31, 2009, so almost seven years now.

Why did you choose Canada? Phil took a sabbatical from work in 2004 and signed up for a Nonstop snowboarding instructor course. He almost went to Whistler but ended up in Fernie, which he’d never heard of before! After spending a season here with the Nonstop program he knew he wanted to come back permanently. Was the process of becoming a citizen difficult? It was straightforward. We entered the country as Permanent Residents and lived here until we were eligible to apply for citizenship. The process of applying for residency was much more difficult by comparison. We travelled to Kelowna to take our citizenship test (we studied all the way there in the car!) and were fortunate to pass the test and be welcomed as citizens in the swearing in ceremony the next day.

Claire and Phil Gadd and family at their swearing in ceremony.

Did you immigrate alone or with family? We arrived with 2.5 year old Evie and 1 year old Milly (must have been quite mad looking back at that now!) and completed our family a year later when Asia arrived in Fernie in July 2010. What is your favourite part of being a Canadian citizen? For me, it was at the citizenship ceremony, surrounded by a great diversity of people from all over the world, some of whom were incredibly grateful for the opportunity that living in Canada afforded them and their families. It made me fully realize what a privilege it is to be a Canadian citizen. And Phil loves being able to travel freely across the US border!

Interview – Becoming Canadian

19

Roller Derby Volunteers

A

Marina Pynnakan Where are you from? Serbia / Yugoslavia.

How long have you been in Canada? I arrived on October 4th, 1999.

Why did you choose Canada? I really liked Canada and it was such a better and different way of life than back home. In Canada, I actually could have money from working, back where I was from I worked for three cents an hour.

Was the process of becoming a citizen difficult? At that time no, there were no real issues with becoming a citizen, but it was rough for me in the beginning. I came here with twenty dollars in my pocket, one pair of pants, one shirt, and knowing no English and having no friends - so that was very difficult. I was lucky to have an Aunt here and stayed with her for a little bit and Marina Pynakken pauses for a quick photo she helped me. Soon, I was able to get a job and have my own at McDonalds. She credits owner Dave, place. Since I have started working, I have always worked two or for helping her with many things upon her arrival to Canada. three jobs and putting in about 15 hours a day and that’s what I still do. I just don’t know how to slow down. Every month I send money back home to my mother, father, brother and sister to help them buy food or clothes.

t this year’s Canada Day Celebrations in Fernie, local women’s roller derby league, Avalanche City Roller Girls, will be running the Bar Service. The skaters are looking forward to being a part of the Canada Day event this year and hope to spread the word of Roller Derby amongst the attendees. This is the first year the Avalanche City Roller Girls have taken part in volunteering at the Canada Day Celebration, and look forward to the day’s festivities. Many of the skaters attend the Canada Day Celebration with their families, and this year, are keen to be able to help put on the event by volunteering to run the bar service. The skaters are proud residents of Fernie and look forward to participating in community events such as Canada Day festivities, and hope to interact with a lot of new people, and make them aware of their sport. Monies raised from liquor sales will help Avalanche City fund events like their home roller derby games on June 20, July 4 and 11, as well as travel costs, team bus maintenance, and other expenses. Be sure to stop by have a cold one, and visit your local roller derby players, the Avalanche City Roller Girls!

Did you immigrate alone or with family? I came all by myself.

What is your favourite part of being a Canadian citizen? I like it all. I gave up my dual citizenship to my home country and am just Canadian. Mostly, the people are so great in Fernie, I really love it here and with being in a small town people are very willing to help, and I can also help others. My boss, Dave from McDonalds helped me out so much with paperwork, hiring me and many other things. He said, “Marina, it is not important to speak English, it is just important to know how to work.” Dave, and so many others have helped me a lot and things are going really well for me now.

2016 Canada Day Celebrations

I Am Canadian! When Ann Zweerink the owner operator of Ann’s Your Independent Grocers called to give the Leisure Services Department the great news that she wanted to be our Banner Sponsor for the 2016 Canada Day Celebrations we were so excited to feature her contribution in our Canada Day Event Pull Out. When asked why as a business owner she gives to our event she had this to offer. “I am proud to be Canadian and we are so lucky and fortunate as Canadians to live in this country and have the freedom that we do. It’s an honour to be a Canadian citizen. I am proud to call Fernie my home, and feel so fortunate to be able to own a business and live in this very kind community with my family. I am always happy to sponsor community events and first in my thoughts is the Canada Celebrations hosted by the City of Fernie each year. As Extra Foods we have donated the cakes for many years. There was no question in my mind that I would offer to donate the cakes again this year. However we will be able to put our special addition to them with the ability to decorate the cakes in store ourselves. I think the City of Fernie does a fantastic job organizing a great Canada Day Celebration, and really who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? It’s an event that draws a large group of people who are looking to get out and have fun and of course celebrate that they are Canadian. This day creates wonderful memories for a lot of families and I would miss being a part of it”
