History
Discover Heritage with the Fernie Museum this Summer!

On the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street is the Fernie Museum, a heritage building packed with Fernie’s history. The building itself is an important part of Fernie’s – and Canada’s – story, having been part of a nationwide financial scandal that contributed to the failure of Canada’s Home Bank in 1923. Pick up a heritage walking tour brochure from the Fernie Museum or Visitor Information Centre and discover all of Fernie’s historical buildings, including: The Fernie Court House, an award winning chateau-style structure completed in 1911, or Fernie City Hall, the former headquarters of The Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company. One of the few buildings to survive the Great Fire, this Dutch barn style building served as a place of refuge during and after the fire. The Museum also offers Guided Walking Tours, and will host a new art exhibition: In This Together, by Michael Hepher this summer.
Legend of the Ghostrider A slice of local legend, the shadowy Ghostrider watches over the Elk Valley from the side of Mount Hosmer. According to the legend, a man named William Fernie was prospecting in the area in the 19th century when he came across a young Ktunaxa woman who he saw wore a unique piece of jewellery, a necklace made of shining stones: coal. He learned where the coal came from after striking a deal with the woman’s father, a local Ktunaxa chief, where he promised to marry her in exchange for the information. But, he backed out of the deal and refused to marry the woman, angering the Ktunaxa chief, who then put a curse on the valley that would bring fire, flood and famine. Disaster followed, with Fernie requiring to be rebuilt multiple times both physically and in spirit. Whether the curse had anything to do with the disasters is one for the legend, but the City of Fernie still requested Chief Ambrose Gravelle and members of the Ktunaxa to perform a curse lifting ceremony in 1964. On sunny summer afternoons you can see the shadow of a horse and rider on the face of Mount Hosmer, and the legand says that the rider is the young woman who Fernie refused to marry, and the shadow walking beside is that of her father, forever watching over the valley.

HIKING Fernie is surrounded by hiking trails that can take you from the vibrant core of the community and deep into the forest. There are walks of history, long hikes into the backcountry and more sweeping vistas than you can name to be found in and around Fernie. With more trails than can be listed, pick up a copy of the Fernie Hiking and Biking Trail map from the Visitor Information Centre or outdoor stores around town. If you want something lighter or just in or on the edge of town, consider the Emily Brydon Trail along the Elk River, offering a flat walk on the valley floor to take in the sights. Or maybe the Fairy Creek Trail for something a little more adventurous, which takes you up to Fairy Creek Falls from the Visitor Information Centre. Mount Fernie is a lot of up, giving you amazing views of town from the west, while Mount Proctor is even more climbing, taking you along the edge of the Fairy Creek watershed, and offering sweeping views of up and down the valley from above the treeline. The Mount Fernie Provincial Park trails tend to stay in the forest, offering more chances of wildlife encounters. Or you can head to Island Lake for a nice walk around the lake (with the option of more uphill), or to Fernie Alpine Resort where lift-accessed trails can get you high up the hillside without a long hike, and guides can teach you all about the forest.
Fernie FAQ Where can we take a short hike? If you’re short on time or just want a nice easy stroll, walk along the dyke trail along the Elk River in the Annex. Annex Park is closed for 2022, but the trail past is open and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. An out and back walk is the Fairy Creek Trail, which starts at the Visitor Information Centre and takes you to beautiful waterfalls in the Fairy Creek watershed. Summer 2022 - Thefreepress.ca

BIKING Go for a walk down 2nd Avenue in Fernie in the middle of summer and there’s a good chance you’ll see more mountain bikes than people. That’s because there are hundreds of kilometres of trails around Fernie that link together and ensure that an eager rider can spend an entire day out riding without having to loop back once. From beginner trails right on the edge of town to intermediate loops through the forest and enough advanced trails up in the hills to keep even the most adventurous rider busy, Fernie has it all. On 2nd Ave, you can find the local businesses Gearhub, The Guides Hut, Straight Line and Ski Base which can set you up with the gear you need to get out on the trails. While you’re there, pick up a copy of the local multi-use trail guide and pick a trail that suits what you’re after. For some tips, heading south from 2nd Ave takes you to the Montane trails, an accessible network of mostly beginner and intermediate connecting loops. Above Montane are more challenging trails sure to bring a thrill. If you go east, there’s the Ridgemont network – a local favourite through the forest right next to town that offers plenty of sweeping views. If you go north you can cross the Elk River and

find the Fairy Creek trails next to the Visitor Information Centre. These trails take you up, up and up for more fantastic views and a rewarding downhill. To the west you have a lot of options: Climbs, loops, downhill, technical – whatever you want. The Mount Fernie area, Mount Fernie Provincial Park, and last (but certainly not least) the Fernie Alpine Resort trails offer days of riding time. Speaking of the Fernie Alpine Resort, access to downhill trails can be through a seasons pass for the chairlifts, if you’re after all that downhill and don’t fancy spending all your energy on the up. Trail guides can be picked up at any outdoor store in Fernie, as well as at the Visitor Information Centre.
Fernie FAQ Where can we take a short bike ride? Cycling is something a lot of Fernie does. The streets are easy to navigate, and the trails are within reach. Ride around the Maintown Loop for an urban exploration, or try out some of the green trails at Montane.
FISHING Fernie and the Elk Valley is a mecca for fly fishing, drawing visitors from afar to throw a line in the Elk River. The area is famous for its Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and hybrid catch. The Elk River is catch-and-release, so fly fishers are in it for the experience. Rivers are open to fishing year-round except April 1 to June 14, and there are four local businesses in Fernie that can offer information on what you need (like a fishing license) and

also offer guided fishing trips. With wide open space, avoid the crowds and cast a line on the river for the experience of a lifetime. Wildlife Safety The Elk Valley is prime ecological land, with rivers, meadows, forests and fields that make it a beautiful place for humans to live. Those same traits also make it attractive for wildlife,making the Elk Valley a high-traffic area for our forest friends, and increasing chances that locals and visitors alike will encounter critters in town and beyond. Here in the valley you can encounter large animals like bears, deer, elk and moose, as well as smaller critters like skunks and racoons. It’s important to keep encounters with wildlife safe for everyone. The goal is to reduce encounters, and if you do have one, to get out of it safely. Some basic tips: Carry bear spray if you are walking out of town, and make plenty of noise so wildlife know you’re coming. Make sure to pick up all your trash, and leave no trace behind. Do not feed wildlife. WildsafeBC is the top organization for human and wildlife safety, with resources on animals you can encounter locally, and how to stay safe in the environment. RAFTING If you love rafting or you seek a new water sport experience that can be both thrilling and relaxing, you’ve come to the right town. That’s because running right through Fernie is the amazing Elk River, which stretches for about 220 kilometres through the southeast Kootenays. Fernie FAQ Who can I talk to about what to do in Fernie? The go-to location for information about Fernie is the Visitor Information Centre, which is on the north side of town on Hwy. 3. Its formal address is 102 Commerce Rd. if you’re punching it into a map, but you can spot it from the highway because of the big Fernie sign out the front. If you’re already downtown, the Fernie Museum on 2nd Ave acts as a downtown Visitor Information Centre. Helpful folks at both locations can answer all sorts of questions about Fernie and what to do, where to eat and more.

Club professionals describe the club as a mountain course, which is very playable, relatively easy, and features no blind holes, extreme hills, or sharp corners. It is very walkable as the distance from one green to the next tee box is very short. For those who like to walk instead of take a cart, this course is for you, too. There is a fair amount of water on the course, but the water features are usually found beside the fairway. Only a few holes feature playable water hazards. The hills are gently rolling, and the greens are maintained to manageable speed; not excessively fast. We do have a driving range if you want to warm up prior to your round or just come by and practice. If you need a few pointers to help take your game to the next level we have golf pros on hand to help you out. When you’ve finished eating lunch or dinner at their highly acclaimed restaurant which overlooks the course, and you return home or continue on your journey, memories of the stunning scenery will stick with you. ARTS & CULTURE Beyond its mining roots, Fernie is known as a hub for creative types with a thriving arts and culture scene. With a museum that has an upstairs gallery with rotating exhibitions through the seasons, a main street with galleries and art shops and an entire civic building dedicated to the arts in the Arts Station, there’s a lot of space for creatives to thrive. Fernie is so culturally inclined that even the dumpsters get a glow-up every year in a bid to brighten up even the back alleys of town and showcase local talent. First thing’s first: if you are seeking artistic camaraderie and events, check out the Fernie Arts Station on 1st Avenue, run by the Fernie and District Arts Council. There’s plenty of events run out of the Arts Station each season, so check it out for ideas and inspiration, or to learn, or to see what Fernie has to offer. Located right next to Station Square, the Arts Station hosts the Wednesday Socials in town – a draw in summer months.
Fernie FAQ Where can I get the best views of Fernie? It can be easy to get drawn into everything Fernie has to offer, but if you’re after a big picture view of the place, there are plenty of mountain trails with good views of town. The most obvious is Fernie Alpine Resort – buy a pass and head up the chairlift to check out their trails for some sweeping vistas. You can also get some nice views from the Montane Trails, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, try hiking up Mount Fernie

At the Fernie Arts Co-Op artists from around the valley have works on display and for sale. You can buy art, postcards, pottery, jewellery and more, allowing you to take a little bit of Fernie and Elk Valley creativity home with you. That’s not to mention the many artists galleries on 2nd Ave and beyond. There’s also a regular cultural tour that comes through each year in August that wasn’t stopped by the pandemic, while you can find more art and creativity at the Sunday market from July to September.
EVENTS AROUND TOWN
Despite being a small mountain town, Fernie knows how to put on a good event. Here is just a handful of the events happening in town from May to September. A full list can be found on the Tourism Fernie website.
Fernie Gravel Grind June 24 to 26 - Grab your bike and participate in this weekend-long gravel-riding experience! The race is open to anyone and offers multiple distances, race categories, and activities for all ages. Festivities will be taking place as well, so if you are a biker, this event might well be for you! Cross-country mountain bikes or gravel bikes are recommended, road bikes are not permitted. Fernie Alpine Resort Summer Opening Day Fernie Alpine Resort, June 25 - Stop by our beloved mountain resort for its official summer season opening. Spirits are always high at the hill in the winter, and the summer is no different! Enjoy chairlift rides with incredible views, hiking, mountain biking, an aerial park, dining, lodging, Nature Bob’s Interpretive Centre, and more. The summer season runs until Sept. 5. Wednesday Socials July and August - A weekly social event at Station Square with live music, food trucks and a beer garden. Check The Arts Station website for details.
Canada Cup DH Dunbar Series Race Fernie Alpine Resort, July 17 - This is the first of three events in the 2022 Dunbar Summer Series of downhill bike racing. Anyone interested in this courageous sport will definitely want to stop by the hill on this day! 4th Annual Elk Valley Ultra 50km July 23 - This trail run race has been described as challenging, beautiful, steep and rewarding. If you would like a serious physical challenge that will take you across all kinds of incredible Fernie trails and terrain, you may want to consider signing up! Spots are limited. Get in touch with the organizers, Stag Leap Running Co., or check out Tourism Fernie’s website for more information. Wapiti Music Festival Annex Park, August 5 to 6 - One of the most well-renowned music festivals in the region, this event brings Canadian indie musicians together for a weekend of good vibes. There are all kinds of activites to partake in for all ages. This year will be the 10th anniversary of the event, so you won’t want to miss it!
Fernie Mountain Market Fernie Rotary Park, every Sunday from July 3 to September 25 - check out wares from local farmers selling freshly picked fruit, veggies, locally-grown meat, herbs & flowers, herbalists crafting soaps, bakers selling their homemade pies & sourdough bread and local artisans showcasing their latest creations.
Fernie Writers’ Conference Lizard Creek Lodge, August 15 to 21 - This is a week of writing workshops, panel discussions and written-word performances. The annual conference will bring out the region’s writers, as well as editors and literary agents to mix with. Notable writers like Jayme Moye, Sid Marty, John Keeble and more will be leading workshops.
Annual Fernie Golf Open Fernie Golf Club, July 9 and 10 - Men’s, women’s, and seniors’ divisions will be hitting the greens for this two-day stroke play 36-hole tournament with festivities.

What is the population of Fernie? In the 2021 census 6,320 people called Fernie home, and that number is growing! Only five years before, there were 5,396 people within city limits. That’s a jump of over 17 percent! Fernie’s municipal population hides the number of residents up and down the valley that come to town every day for work and play. With only 15K people in the Elk Valley, there’s a lot of room to explore and discover.

Local 632 2nd Avenue - Located right in the heart of town, Local is relatively fresh on the market (having opened their doors on Dec. 15, 2020), but alrewady seeing success. Their whole raison d’etre is to provide a consistent, year-round market space for local farmers and producers to sell their goods. Their shelves and fridges are always stocked with fresh vegetables and scrumptious frozen meals. If local food is what you love, this shop is for you. Mountain Market, Rotary Park Highway 3 - Run by the same folks as Local, this classic farmers market runs from July to September on Sundays. Their mission is to provide a venue for local farmers and artists to sell their goods, and to bring a variety of local produce to the Fernie area, their website reads. If you like freshly-picked fruits, veggies, locally-grown meats, herbs, flowers, and more, then you should definitely check this market out for a browse-and-buy. Fernie Brewing Company 26 Manitou Road - The motto of this craft beer brewing company is: “As simple as good beer, from a good town.” These guys have a wonderful array of tasty beers to wet your pallet. There’s nothing quite like Fernie on a nice, sunny day. Annex Park *closed for construction May 1 – Oct 31, 2022 Located between the Elk River and the dike. this serene park is a great place to enjoy lunch in the grassy picnic area or watch the ducks float on the pond. James White Park This multi-use park can be found off Mt. Minton Street in Fernie’s airport subdivision James White Park is situated near the Elk River and hosts tennis courts, ball diamonds, horseshoe pits and a bocce ball court. It’s also home to the Lizard Range Disc Golf Course - A Fernie favorite pastime. Rotary Park Rotary Park has play structures, a huge grassy field, picnic areas and a gazebo located right off Highway 3 beside Park Place Lodge. Dogwood Park Along the Elk River between 1st Street and 4th Avenue, Dogwood Park is truly stunning. It features a non-motorized boat launch, picnic tables and incredible views of the river and Lizard Range. Ridgemont Park Located on Ridgemont Lane, this cute park features beautiful views, a big grassy field and a great playground. Maiden Lake Located near the Fernie Golf Course, Maiden Lake features a man- made lake ideal for paddling, skipping rocks or catching minnows. People of all ages and activity preferences head outside and do what they do best: have an awesome time in the marvelous natural environment the town and valley has to offer. Fernie has all kinds of parks from a skateboard and BMX park to a duck pond, dog parks and picnic areas, this small mountain town has it all. 10th Avenue Park This lovely little park on 10th Avenue has a grassy field and a children’s play structure, swings and a small basketball court. Prentice Park Located near the Elk Valley Hospital and Fernie schools, between 5th Avenue and 15th Street, this park features soccer fields, two slo-pitch fields, an excellent playground for kids, a running track and large grassy areas. Mount Fernie Provincial Park This park is excellent if you are looking for a more scenic and secluded wilderness walk. Located three kilometres south of Fernie, off Highway 3, this 259-hectare park features large vehicle and tenting spots with an extensive trail system for day use. Kids Aerial Playground This is basically a kid’s dream park. It features a slackline, mini-zipline, net climber, chairlift swing, klatter bridge, and mini-tire bridge. And, best of all, it’s free! A short walk from the village, stop by Guest Services at Fernie Alpine Resort for directions. All children must be supervised by an adult. Have fun!

Elkford: (65.4 km) Even further up the valley, Elkford has great trails amazing hunting a lots of back country draw. It’s the last town you’ll drive through on your way to the Elk Lakes Provincial Park, 2 hours north of Fernie and an hour beyond Elkford.

Where can I charge my electric vehicle? Fernie is adding new EV charging stations this season! You’ll be able to charge your vehicle at the Visitor Information Centre this Summer, to the north of town on Hwy. 3, and there are charging points at City Hall near downtown Fernie. There are also charging points behind Smitty’s Restaurant on Hwy. 3 to the south of town, and points at Canadian Tire.
