Bouncy houses and games keep kids moving all day long. There will be parkour demos by the Elk Valley Gymnastics Club, train rides by Total Maintenance Lawn Services, dog agility demo on the west lawn by Pine Ave. Don’t forget to browse through the many vendors at the first Mountain Market of the season. Again bring your blankets to sit on our grassy areas or seating is available under the shade tent to enjoy the non-stop entertainment we have planned. This year there are more food vendors so plan to stay into the evening. Refreshment provided by the Fernie Roller Derby League. Don’t forget the Fireworks at dusk. Remember your sun screen and drink lots of water! As is always the case many people have volunteered to give their time to plan and execute this community event, we couldn’t do it without you! The Leisure Services Department would like to thank all the volunteers and the organization they represent for their input and effort. A big shout out to our Banner Sponsor this year Todd Fyfe and the Fernie Real Estate Company for coming on board for this great community celebration. Todd and his staff will be on hand next to the stage area throughout the event, please make sure you make your way over to their tent to say hello. THE MUSIC NEVER STOPS AT THE CANADA DAY 150 CELEBRATION The Leger Sisters

The Sparwood Treblemakers

T

he Sparwood Treblemakers have been singing together for only three short months as they are a brand new glee club at Sparwood Secondary with big plans for the future. M

y name is Chanel Leger, and I am 14 years old. My family and I are originally from New Brunswick, but we now live in Calgary. My sister and I have been singing for almost our whole lives, starting with classical training for six years. About three years ago, a friend of ours played guitar, and it just blew me away. I thought to myself, I want to do that! And so since then, we took guitar lessons. I ski race for the ski team FAST, and so we come every weekend to Fernie, and we are also in a band with a bunch of ski friends! I like to play a lot of different styles of music, and sometimes I do play original songs. I want to keep playing music, and try to get myself out there more, and become a singer/songwriter, but as long as I keep playing and singing I’m happy!

H

i, my name is Tiffanie Leger. I have been playing guitar for about three years, and counting, and have taken voice lessons for 10 years. I am a chick from New Brunswick and have a range of different genres of music, from pop to acoustic rock. Due to our love of skiing, our family discovered Fernie. My sister and I have been in the FAST ski program for a big chunk of our lives. I love to act and sing and wish to pursue a career in these fields.

“Black Jack” Ketchum

T

im “Black Jack” Ketchum was born and raised in Alberta. He found a love for music and took up the guitar in 1970. Moving to Fernie in 1982, he was a founding member of local rock band “The Relief Committee”, where he plays guitar, sings and writes songs with local musicians Cam Kennedy, P.J. Burnette and Pat Cannon. Tim received a music diploma from Selkirk College in the Professional Music program in performance and engineering in 1996, and when not on stage with his band, delights audiences as a solo act.

Top’O

T

op’O was born in the Patagonian foothills in the mid 80’s and found himself an orphan by the age of two. He traveled through the South American wilderness for two decades until he emerged from the woods just south of Fernie. He quickly picked up the local nomenclature and customs and now likes to wander the streets telling tales to anyone who will listen.

Cold Cuts

M

any campfires ago, three friends bonded over their mutual love of charcuterie and its everlasting impact on Rock n’ Roll music. Many ham salads, bacon sandwiches, and head-banging band practices later, Cold Cuts is ready to grace the stage for Canada Day. Blending different genres that span decades of rock and roll, Cold Cuts’ music will go down smoother than a finely cooked Pork Tenderloin, but with the crunch of crispy wrapped bacon. Recipe for your perfect Cold Cuts experience: 1 heaping spoonful of Rob Boland – wide ranging vocals with extra smooth guitar riffs ¼ cup of Dylan McMorris – provide balance by adding deep undertones of bass two arms and two legs of Lee Vanderwoude – sharp accents of snare and cymbal, coupled with well rounded drum tones.

ince its opening in 2012 Infinitea has been committed to being an all ages live music venue for local and touring artists. While Fernie has many larger, late night band venues, there was space for a smaller more intimate venue that had a focus on singer/ songwriter smaller groups and up and coming artists which is a niche Infinitea has worked hard to fill. Hosting live music acts every Friday night from 8pm, Infinitea has provided a space where artists and audiences can connect and where artists can gain experience on their musical journey. It is extremely important to Infinitea to keep the culture of live music alive in Fernie by offering first time performers a stage and touring artists a space to showcase their talents on their tours across Canada. Infinitea has a range of house instruments including a piano, guitar and mandolin which are available to everyone to play, and has recently started a guitar lending program with the Arts Station. The artists that are playing at this year’s Canada Day celebrations are some of Infiniteas local favourites and new up and coming talents. Infinitea will continue to support live music in Fernie for locals and touring artists. Infinitea has live music from 8 p.m. every Friday night and $10 BBQ and Beats from 6-9 p.m. every Sunday as well as touring artists performing throughout the Summer. Canada Day 150 Our Community, Our Country!

W

hen faced with the challenge of creating a Canada Day that was bigger and better than the last to celebrate our 150th year, we knew we needed to step back and see a bigger picture. In order to deliver something fresh that could be appreciated as the spirit of our community and our country, our minds went directly to the Canada 150 Art Projects that have been worked on by three community groups over the past year. All of these projects will be showcased at the Canada Day 150 Celebration on July 1. At the Community Eco Garden 1400 red and white tulips were planted and an

art project was designed using 150 Canadian maple leaves. The I AM FERNIE project focuses on the work of Fernie photographer Kyle Hamilton. His project was hosted by the Fernie Museum and 150 Fernie Faces were photographed for the project. One hundred and fifty youth representing the areas schools collaborated with 10 local artists to express in form the identity of our local youth as they perceive themselves as Canadians. It is our hope that you take time on Canada Day to view the three Projects and enjoy this truly Fernie expression of what it is to be a Canadian.

Canada 150 Kicks off in Fernie!

T

he Wildsight Community EcoGarden kicked off the Canada 150+ festivities in Fernie with a Blooming Ceremony featuring 1400 tulips planted in the shape of our local landscape. The tulips, in conjunction with an amazing collaborative art installation, celebrate all of the diversity and richness that Canada is abundant with! The EcoGarden was the lucky recipient of one of a 150, ‘150th Celebration Gardens’ across the country. Tulips generously donated by the Canadian Garden Council and Vesey’s Bulbs of PEI make up what is a celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017. The tulip was chosen as it is the international symbol of friendship and an enduring symbol of Canada’s ethos of hospitality and kindness. Local artists Lesley Graham and Laura Nelson, with the assistance of Dawn Deydey and Jean Marchi, created the amazing art backdrop that graces the 150th Celebration Garden. The art project consists of 150 individual maple leafs with thoughts on Canada as written by students, seniors, members of the LGBTQ community, Fernie Rotary, City staff and council, library patrons and more. Central to the leaves are the numbers 1, 5, 0 hand painted with a design as diverse as the country as it travels from north to south, coast to coast. Remember to take your time and examine the display closely as there is always something new to

discover hidden in the printed thoughts or amazing artwork! Wondering why there is a plus sign? Canada 150 is a celebration of the creation of the Dominion of Canada and is grounded in the themes of diversity and inclusion, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environment and youth. The plus sign has been added to further acknowledge the fact that Indigenous people have been here since time immemorial and that Canada has history that predates colonization. The use of the plus sign expresses that Fernie is a community of reconciliation and aims to reflect and recognize the culture and contributions of regional Indigenous peoples. Please visit the EcoGarden located in Prentice Park and enjoy not only the beautiful gardens but the insightful views on how Canada is perceived by its citizens of all ages. And don’t forget – Canada 150+ tulip bulbs will be available to purchase at the Our Harvest Fall Fair on September 17, 2017. Here’s your chance to remember the Canada 150+ celebrations for years to come with the colour and joy of the tulip! We would like to thank the many sponsors for making this happen! East Kootenay Credit Union, Valley View Contracting and the Columbia Basin Trust were very supportive of this project and of course, the Canadian Garden Council, Vesey’s Bulbs, Canada Post and Niagara Parks.

150 Youth Identity Project to be displayed at Canada Day

A

s part of the Canada 150 celebrations, 150 youth representing the region’s schools, collaborated to create group art projects which explore the concept of youth’s identity as Canadians – what makes you proud to be Canadian, what individuals do they feel best represents Canada on a local, national and international stage, and what places, both locally and nationally, do they identify as uniquely Canadian … and why? The project saw 10 local artists collaborate with groups from Fernie’s 3 schools, bringing together 150 local youth. The local artists were: Lesley Graham, Mike Hepher, Jay Arnold, Laura Nelson, Jeanne Parker, Jessica Bird, as well as Lania Cook, Sarah Young, Kerri Holmes and Pepper Couëlle-Sterling. The project forms part of Fernie’s cultural series celebrating Canada 150 and is kindly supported by Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, British Columbia Arts Council, the Resort Municipality Initiative, the Park Place Lodge and the City of Fernie. It was delivered in partnership with the Fernie Museum.

I

am an Ottawa-based full time artist with a passion for experimental, multi-dimensional work. My medium is my muse and I am constantly pushing its boundaries. Working with metallic foils introduces a quality of light found in no other medium bringing a glass-like quality to the surfaces, with rainbows of colours appearing as the light changes. I began my career seven years ago with the help of my sister Christa Moffat, a longtime Fernie resident. We put her management and marketing skills together with my new creative freedom and made a solid foundation from which I am able to devote myself to full time. With national gallery representation and a growing base of collectors, I have been able to turn my attention to a new charitable project. Celebrating Canadian pride, with the flag as the centrepiece, I have started a series of paintings that will be loaned out across Canada to events and celebrations providing perfect backgrounds for patriotic selfie-taking and far-reaching social interaction. These paintings will then be donated to fundraising events at the end of this year or donated to public spaces. Enjoy project Strong and Free Fernie!!

K

yle Hamilton started his Canada 150 project three years ago. He took photos of a few residents each day, but on one particular “blitz” day he photographed more than 300 locals. Rather than take photos in Fernie’s stunning scenery, he deliberately chose to photograph residents in black-and-white in a studio setting to focus on their faces. “Everybody knows Fernie for its landscapes and its outdoor activities, but there’s just so much more to Fernie in terms of its people,” he said. “I really wanted to focus on the individuals. I really wanted to make the images about the person and not about the location.” Hamilton also set out to capture the diversity of Fernie and “everybody from all different walks of life.” Fifty of his photos will be on display during the Canada Day Celebrations.

lk Valley Gymnastics provides classes for Parent and Tots, Parkour, recreational gymnastics and competitive. It’s been amazing to watch how fast the club is growing, and how well the kids are taking to the classes. We are hoping to move into a new space soon where we will be able to offer more programs for all ages including adults. The club was started by a group of incredibly motivated parents that wanted to provide gymnastics programming to the community. Since then we have grown to a membership of over 250 kids over the last year. We have lots of families that come back session after session, it’s a pleasure to watch them progress each time becoming more confident in their skills. We just took Elk Valley’s first competitive gymnastics to competition in both Kimberley and Kelowna. They placed very well competing against athletes from all over the province. As we grow the club we are looking to become a movement space for the community. Gymnastics helps develop the fundamental movement patterns for life, running, jumping, landing and swinging. These can be translated into skiing, snowboarding, biking, soccer and swimming as well as many other sports. Life is about movement... let’s all play together!

he Avalanche City Roller Girls, Fernie’s all female roller derby team are excited to once again be hosting the City of Fernie’s Canada Day Beer Gardens at the Fernie Aquatic Centre. The Avalanche City Roller Girls have been competing since 2011 and are currently ranked 14th of 143 national teams. As their season comes to a close after training hard and travelling extensively to compete in Canada and across the border this team of 16 dedicated athletes is looking forward to celebrating this memorable Canadian milestone with all of Fernie this Canada Day. They hope to see you all come on down and wet your whistle with a cold beverage and enjoy all the fun happenings.
