J
oin us for a day of fun for the whole family. The event will be held at a new location, City Hall at 501 3rd Avenue. There is lots of grass surrounding the venue to spread out your blanket and stay for the
entire day and into the evening to enjoy the fireworks display.
Make sure your kids decorate their bikes and pets for the parade. The Fernie Elks Club starts off the day down at Maiden Lake with their 5th Annual Cardboard Boat Race at 11am. Come on over to the Kids Tents for some fun crafts sponsored by Creative Minds Pre-School; watch your young ones make a cool Canada Day Craft. Bouncy houses and games keep kids moving all day long. There will be parkour demos by the Elk Valley Gymnastics Club, Train rides by Total Maintenance Lawn Services. Don’t forget to browse through the many vendors at the first Mountain Market of the season. Seating is available under the shade tent to enjoy the non-stop entertainment we have planned. This year there are more food vendors so plan to stay into the evening. Refreshments provided by the Fernie Roller Derby League. Don’t forget the Fireworks at Dusk. Remember your sun screen and drink lots of water! As always, many people have volunteered to give their time to plan and execute this community event. We couldn’t do it without you, thank you! Many sponsors have stepped up to the plate to help us make our little town in the Rocky Mountains shine. The City of Fernie has recently restructured Leisure Services into the Community Services Department. Our staff look forward to working closely with our residents and local groups to continue providing our community with quality programs and services. In closing, please enjoy Canada Day in Fernie with your family and friends and take a moment to reflect on what makes each and everyone one of us truly Canadian. our local Roller Derby team, Avalanche City Roller Derby, are extremely excited to be running the Bar Service for the fifth time this year for the Canada Day Celebrations in Fernie, BC. The skaters are looking forward to being a part of the celebrations and hope to spread the word of Roller Derby amongst the attendees. They are proud residents of Fernie and look forward to participating in community events such as Canada Day, this time as volunteers to help make this event continue to be as successful, fun and memorable as it has been in the past. Monies raised from liquor sales will help Avalanche City fund events like their home games, travel costs, team bus maintenance, rental fees to give them space to practice and other expenses. goals. “Dishwashing gave me all the time in the world, I could snowboard all day, wash dishes for a few hours and then get straight into my music.. then rinse and repeat!” says local music man Zac Barret. Zac (now of Happy Hounds) has been seen walking the Coal Creek trails with his fiddle in hand as Fernie’s own Pied Piper “The dogs are not so critical of your squeaking.. the fiddle’s a tough instrument to learn!” says Zac who brings music into as many aspects of his life as he can often mentoring other musicians through the Jam nights he hosts weekly at The Royal (Wed) and The Brickhouse (Thur). It is this music community that assembles multiple times a week to create and appreciate live music that keeps Fernie’s live music scene so strong. “I have had more doors open for me musically in Fernie than I ever did in the city” says Kate Pollock of Hark Raving Sirens, a local vocal trio who debuted at Infinitea T-Bar’s live music Friday’s after forming at a campfire Jam session in 2013. You only need to look at the line up of this year’s Canada Day celebrations to see the many collaborations and musical endeavours that have been born out of this strong local music culture. With so many local venues supporting live music and so many musical opportunities continually arising, it is no wonder that these talented individuals continue to stay in Fernie creating music; doing whatever it takes to keep them here. So next time you meet someone out and about at a Jam night in Fernie and they tell you that they wash dishes… say ‘yeah but what do you really do?’ By Stephanie Fleming (owner of Infinitea T-Bar)

CANADA DAY LIVE MUSIC AT Reiss Zibin
Reiss Zibin grew up in Robson in the West Kootenays. She started singing at a very young age and built her stage confidence through years of performing. By age 14 she started writing and composing her own songs. In 2014 she released her first EP called REALITY. Reiss takes every opportunity to perform, playing fluidly between guitar, ukulele and the keyboard and has recently picked up the sticks and is trying her hand on the drums. This year in February, she released her new song SHY and is looking forward to building on this as the year continues.
Kevin Oskam ‘Born in the flatlands of Canada, raised in the fires of Hell’s Basement, Medicine Hat, Alberta’. Kevin Oskam has recently moved to the Fernie area and has been a musician & expressionist for over 20 years. A carpenter/scaffolder by trade, father of two Kevin also delves into the creative worlds of break dance, painting, drawing and poetry. He runs his own sound/promotions production and recording company and hopes to further his musical endeavours here in Fernie.
Gemma Luna
Gemma Luna is a rock steady wild card with a loop station and electric guitar. Drawing from a life steeped in music and a keen knack for improvisation and harmony, she builds soulfully jazzed songs with warm chords, layered vocals and lyrical freestyle.
Top’O
Top’O was born in the Patagonian foothills in the mid 1980s and found himself an orphan by age two. He travelled through the South American Wilderness for two decades until he immerged from the woods just south of Fernie. He quickly picked up the local nomenclature and customs and now wanders the streets telling tales to anyone who will listen. In addition to rambling anecdotal recitations he has recently added levitation to his list of superhuman abilities.
Max Thomson
Max Thomson is a rapper / singer / songwriter and producer hailing originally from the UK. His main influence and passion is hip-hop but he takes inspiration from all forms of music. In 2017 he released a 17 track mixtape called ‘Colouring Outside the Lines’, then waisted no time following it up with his new project ‘The Escapist’, to be released this month, which conveys some very deep concepts and themes revolving around the human condition and trying to find balance within ones self. In live performances Max teams up with his DJ engineer, DJ PJ to deliver lyrical libations set to a musical mosaic that explores and celebrates the flaws and perfect imperfections of all human beings. Max Thomson is definitely an artist to look out for in the future.

HISTORIC CITY HALL The Mehditations The Mehditations is an East Kootenay based roots reggae band with dub /jazz and ska influences. The Mehditations was formed by guitarist/ singer/ lyricist Mehdi Makraz in 2015 after he made the move from Morocco to Canada. Drummer and DJ Morgan Adair AKA Sasquatch and backup vocalist Syama joined the project and the addition of Peter Alex on bass guitar and Randy Tapp on Saxophone in 2016 completes the line up as it stands today. The Mehditations has performed numerous shows locally in the last couple of years always getting audiences on their feet. The band draws influence from Bob Marley and The Skatalites as well as more contemporary bands like Groundation and Tribal Seed.
The Hip Flexers A newly formed five-piece wedding/function band (including horn section) was born when two of the members found it difficult to find a band for their own wedding… so they made one! They play many styles of music from 70s to current pop, funk and RnB with their main aim being to get people dancing and keep them there. This new Fernie band has a breadth of Fernie music talent amongst its members and is sure to make your wedding or function an extraordinary day with live music!
DJ Sasquatch
From the band The Mehditations.
Cold Cuts Many campfires ago, 3 friends bonded over their mutual love of charcuterie and its everlasting impact on Rock n’ Roll music. Many ham salads, bacon sandwiches, and head-banging band practices later, Cold Cuts is ready to return to the stage for Canada Day. Blending different genres that span decades of rock and roll, Cold Cuts’ music will go down smoother than a finely cooked Pork Tenderloin, but with the crunch of crispy wrapped bacon. Recipe for your perfect Cold Cuts Experience: 1 Heaping Spoonful of Rob Boland – Wide Ranging Vocals with Extra Smooth Guitar Riffs ¼ Cup of Dylan McMorris – Provide balance by adding deep undertones of bass 2 arms and 2 legs of Lee Vanderwoude – Accents of Snare and Cymbal and the addition of just a sprinklng of Matt Lewis on guitar completes this delightful dish.
Giant Water Bug
Giant Water Bug play down and dirty Rock n Roll, with a healthy dose of bluesgarage rock, and psychedelic influences. Formed from the ashes of poor choices and a cease and desist letter, this three piece has been performing together for the past four years. Brad MacKay (guitar, lead vocals), Louis Girardeau Juteau (bass, vocals), Austin Delaye (drums, vocals), have gained a strong following in Southern BC. Hailing from Rossland B.C., deep within the West Kootenay, their unique sound and energy brings new definition to the term Mountain Music.

Mountain Market kicks off on Canada Day
A
big part of the fun during the Canada Day festivities is the excitement the Mountain Market vendors bring to the day. The Canada Day market is one of the first of our season and vendors come stocked with all the new products they have been making throughout the long winter. We expect to see lots of new vendors and many of our longtime favourites to return for the 2018 season. Expect to experience local farmers selling fresh picked fruit, veggies, herbs and flowers; herbalist’s handcrafted soaps and fragrances; baker’s tasty pies and homemade sourdough bread; and local artisans latest creations, for yourself. The Mountain Market officially starts the 2018 market season on July 8th from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. in Rotary Park. Markets run weekly each Sunday until the Labour Day weekend. Be sure to mark your calendar so you are sure to not miss the following exciting events: • BibBity BobBity Boo Fernie’s Children’s Festival hosted by the Fernie Heritage Library on August 12th • Fernie Alpine Resort Bonus Weekend Pop-Up Market on September 9th, and the • Fall Fair Market hosted by Wildsight on September 16th as part of the Chautauqua festivities.
