Coal Miner DayS - June 8th - 11th 2017
Past President’s Message
F
or over nine years, I have been involved with Sparwood’s Coal Miner Days (CMD), the last three as the President of our society, I also created the Elk Valley’s Got Talent (EVGT) competition and have been the parade coordinator for many years. Now I have transitioned into a board advisory position and role of board secretary in order to let others in our community share in the organizing of this event and give my
family a break. Over the years it has been wonderful getting to know our other board members and sharing in their commitment to showcasing all of the great things that Sparwood has to offer. The dedication and selflessness that our board has had over the years has helped create epic Coal Miner Days that will be forever remembered. Generally people don’t see how much dedication it takes to pull off such an outstanding series of events… from the
moment that the weekend wraps up, the board is discussing what was great and what could be adjusted for the next year. Booking entertainment, fundraising, marketing, meetings and so much more is in process throughout the entire year prior to the actual event. From campsites to hotel rooms, meals, groceries, beverages and fuel, our local businesses are positively influenced over the second weekend in June because of CMD’s.
CAT COMMAND FOR DOZING WILL CHANGE HIS LIFE. ®
(MAYBE EVEN SAVE IT.)
Thousands of people come to Sparwood to play ball, participate in the parade, attend the cabaret, watch the fireworks, sample the beer gardens, shop at the street market, golf in the tournament, learn about emergency preparedness, attend EVGT and have a great time at our family friendly events. The Coal Miner Days weekend is also amazing at helping to raise funds for not-for-profits through a pancake breakfast, BBQs, draws and the Golf Ball Drop. As a business owner (Apex Power & Automation) I have found throughout the years that Coal Miner Days is also a good way to share your business with the public in a giving and supportive way. From joining the parade to sponsoring an event or even providing corporate volunteers, your company is showcased in a positive light while stepping up to support your community! I challenge your company to partner with the CMD festival, you will be glad you did! Even if you don’t have the time to join the board and attend monthly meetings, individuals can show their Sparwood pride by coming out to volunteer during the weekend. We need all levels of help from setting up chairs, working the beer gardens, setting up road blocks, helping at Kidsfest and so much more… if you have some time to help out, please email coalminerdays@ hotmail.com. Our Coal Miner Days’ board is made up of the best community supporters who are dedicated to building events that help highlight the beautiful area we live in:
Every operator deserves a safe, comfortable working environment. We can help you provide it, even in hazardous conditions, with Cat® Command for Dozing. It offers both lineof-sight and non-line-of-sight remote-control options — both of which keep your operators out of the cab and out of harm’s way. Whether you’re dozing on unstable surfaces, handling hazardous materials or working in applications like stockpile feeding, leach pad maintenance or high-wall toe operation, we’re there to help you do it more safely. Coal Miner DayS - June 8th - 11th 2017
Welcome to Coal Miner Days O
n behalf of Sparwood Council and Staff I would like to welcome everyone to Coal Miner Days 2017.
There is always lots to do starting on Saturday morning with the parade and pancake breakfast at the mall, and that flows into a full day of enjoyment for the whole family. Kidsfest at the recreation centre is always fun for the smaller ones, as well as ball tournaments, ball hockey, beer gardens and lots more. I hope that while you are enjoying the festivities you will take the time to check out our mining artifacts and murals throughout town.
Have fun and see you around at Coal Miner Days 2017. Mayor Cal McDougal
Lions Pancake Breakfast
T
he Sparwood Lions Club is proud to have been a part of Coal Miner Days since 1979. The unofficial kick-off to Saturday’s festivities is the annual pancake breakfast which runs from 8-10:30 a.m. on June 10 in the mall parking lot. Come on down for some pancakes, sausage and a cup of coffee and catch up with old friends before the parade starts at 11 a.m.
The pancake breakfast is by donation with proceeds this year going toward the sun/rain shelter project at the Recreation Centre. The Lions will be extending the roofline of the washroom building to the west to create a sheltered area for parents to watch their children play in the spray waterpark and on the play structure, for picnics, and to be used for events such as Coal Miner Days. With your generous donations, the club is planning to complete this project in 2017. The Lions Club has been active in Sparwood since 1971 and currently has 20 members. We appreciate the generous support of the community which makes our projects possible. For more information, or to become a Lion, please call Bill at 250-425-9916 or visit our Facebook page (Sparwood Lions Club).

Coal Miner DayS - June 8th - 11th 2017
E
lk Valleys Got Talent happens Friday, June 9 at 7 p.m. in the Sparwood Rec Centre Curling Rink. We have another amazing line up of artists for you to enjoy! Come out and support our local Valley talent. This year we had three audition nights; one in Elkford in conjunction with Rock-o-Rama, one in Fernie at The Fernie Hotel and one in Sparwood. With talent from all across the Valley – even as far as Fort Steele – this year’s performance will be one for the record books.
We are so fortunate to have three amazing judges to support and guide our talented performers; Nicole Pallone, Jesse Sutherland and last years adult winner Kyra Von Matt! Jesse and Nicole have been with us from the beginning. Jesse has even moved out of the Valley and is still making a return to judge our amazing event. Our judge’s backgrounds include extensive theatre, professional performing, and schooling in the arts. The judges are tasked with giving feedback at the audition nights as well as choosing our semi-finalists. They then provide a coaching night to our lucky participants to assist them with stage presence and professionalism. Participants have auditioned at one of our three audition nights and were selected by our judges to perform at the
semi-finals. Each participant will perform on stage Friday night for the audience and judges. The judges have the almost impossible task of narrowing down the semi-finalists to just three artists per age group. The finalists will then perform again for our audience and judges, but this time the audience gets to decide who they think should win. Audience members are asked to cheer for their favourite performer and we will use decibel readers to see who has the most cheers and applause.
Participants fall in to one of two categories; adult (ages 16 and above) and youth (15 and under) each category has a winner, the winner of the youth category receives a $500 prize and the winner of the adult category walks away with a $1000 prize! All prizes are donated by the Coal Miner Days Society.
Elk Valley’s Got Talent would like to thank everyone for all of their help in making this a reality including the District of Sparwood for their generous donation, Rock-oRama and The Fernie Hotel and Mountainside Church for partnering with us to make our audition nights a success, our emcee Dino Pallone, our amazing judges Nicole Pallone, Jesse Sutherland and Kyra Von Matt, Marcia Johnson for making this all possible and organizing the event, and the
Coal Miner Days Committee for the donation of prizes and venue Friday night.

Sparwood Secondary Presents Twelfth Night
I
n May of 2016, 20 students from Sparwood Secondary School committed to presenting Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night. One theatre-goer exclaimed “I love this!” while watching the opening performance. At other instances the decibel level nearly raised the roof with laughter. If you equate Shakespeare with boredom, think again. This is Shakespeare for everyone, and it is very funny. Alana Minfie-Rybar co-directed the play and brought her extensive experience to the project. The cast reciprocated by working tirelessly and is proud to bring their presentation to the broader community. As one anonymous commentator quipped, “Never send a woman dressed up as a man to do a man’s job!” We may cavil about the implied division of labour, but Shakespeare reminds us that love can indeed make fools of us all. Join us on Sunday afternoon for a presentation that is sure to please audiences of all ages.
Knights of Columbus Soap Box Derby
U
nfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the Knights are unable to have the Soap Box Derby this year. We know that the Soap Box Derby is a large part of the weekend so we are hoping to have it back for 2018.
