Planning a wedding?

The 12 essentials of a dream wedding

A

wedding is the event of a lifetime. This special day has to be perfect, hence the importance of taking care of even the smallest of organizational details. You don’t want to forget anything, whether it’s a reservation, a fitting, or a trial run for your menu and hairstyle. Here’s a checklist of the 12 key elements you’ll need to take care of along the path to your dream wedding. 1. The ceremony, the officiant, and the reception Are you going to have a civil or religious wedding? Have you asked your best friend to unite you in wedlock? And will the reception be in the country or in a hotel banquet room? Make sure the location you choose can easily accommodate all your guests. 2. The meal and the wedding cake There are loads of things to think about when organizing the meal: the format; the menu; a children’s menu;

the bar; and the wedding cake. And don’t forget to ask about your guests’ food allergies. 3. The atmosphere What theme will you choose to set the tone for your wedding? Which DJ will get your guests out on the dance floor? Will you surprise everyone with a unique first dance? 4. Photographer How will you immortalize your wedding: photos, videos, or both? Remember to plan for an indoor photo session in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate on your big day. 5. The invitations Don’t wait until the last minute to send out your invitations if you want all the important people in your life to be with you for this celebration. Remember to indicate the theme and dress code. And do think about including self-addressed stamped envelopes for those essential RSVPs. 6. Wedding bands Your wedding bands are the

symbols of your love; choose them with care. Do you both want gold, silver, or with diamonds? Discreet or extravagant? With or without engraving? 7. Beauty appointments Hairstyle, manicure, waxing, and makeup: leave nothing to chance if you want to be stunning on your big day. Make your appointments for just the right time; you don’t want your roots to be visible under your veil! 8. The dress, suit, and accessories The outfits of bride, groom, and wedding party should be coordinated. Will you be a vision in white or will you choose to add a colourful note? And will the perfect dress feature something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue? 9. Flowers and decorations Have you chosen a colour scheme for your flowers and decorative accessories? What are your favourite flowers? How will the tables be

dressed? 10. Transportation Will you arrive by boat, car, horsedrawn carriage, or maybe even by parachute? Whatever your choice, be sure to take your dress and the weather into consideration. 11. Guest favours A personalized trinket, a gourmet sample, or a home decor object: have you found the perfect wedding favour to thank your guests for joining you? 12. The honeymoon A truly idyllic honeymoon shouldn’t break your budget. Are you tempted by an exotic island or a vibrant city? Choose the destination and the timing carefully to stay in line with your means. Get out your calendar, get set, and reserve! Make your reservations early in order to secure the top experts in every domain. Remember that their talents are in big demand.

There’s no getting around the fact that weddings can be expensive. For many couples they’re the first of the largest expenses they will make together. It’s quite easy for individuals to go over budget on their wedding day if they do not carefully keep track of what has been spent on all the elements of the big day. Use this budget planner to keep all of the costs associated with the wedding in one easy-to-manage place.

The cake

The perfect wedding deserves the perfect cake

S

erving some kind of baked goods on your wedding day is a tradition that dates back to antiquity. Today, there is no lack of choice when it comes to the flavour of your wedding cake: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon, or other original flavours. However, choosing your cake is a little more complex than you may have imagined, and that is why it is so im portant to meet with the baker when

ordering the cake of your dreams. During this meeting, you should mention the number of guests, clearly identify the style that you’re looking for, and discuss the colours and shapes you’ve set your heart on. Don’t hesitate to ask to taste the various flavours of cake, icings, and garnishes that the baker suggests. You could also show him or her pictures of the wedding cakes you like, as well as a copy of your

invitation and a sample of your decorating materials. The more guidelines you can give the creator of your cake, the happier you’ll be with the end result. One of the current trends in wedding cakes is a tower of small cupcakes, decorated individually and arranged in whatever shape you desire. Another popular modern choice is a cake that is in fact a pyramid of macaroons, a magnificent blend of

colours and flavours. Such cakes are also very practical, as they are already divided into individual portions. Be sure not to forget the great tradition of keeping a few slices — or the whole top tier — of your wedding cake for your first anniversary. Seal it in plastic wrap, place it in an air-tight freezer bag, and enjoy it all over again one year later.

would suggest. If you’d like to show off your creativity you could always make your own centrepieces. But be careful; you’ll need a lot of time to create them as well as a good eye for deciding what would look best. Instead of flowers, you could use candles resting on small mirrors, or clear vases filled with objects, such as rose petals, baby’s breath, pretty fruits, ears of corn, pine cones, or simply water with floating candles.

Guest favours It’s not easy to find something original to give as a wedding favour. Choose something that suits your personality and opt for quality rather than quantity. Of course, for classic weddings an embossed matchbook or wrapped piece of wedding cake is standard. A more contemporary option might be something like a packaged tea flower in a glass container, a miniature potted plant, or a mini-bottle of bubbly.

The art of setting a table

T

he tables for a wedding reception are an important decorative element and should help to set the scene for this important event. Here are a few tips to inspire you. Theme and colours Choose a decorative theme that suits your personality, or use your favourite colours and make them your theme. But don’t go overboard; no more than three colours should be used or the result will be muddled

and without harmony. Dishes Most establishments supply place settings (i.e., hotels, caterers, reception halls, restaurants). Renting from a caterer or supplier is another option. Bear in mind that plain dishes, without patterns, are best. Centrepieces For unforgettable centrepieces, floral arrangements are always fashionable. Before you choose a florist, contact several and ask them what they

Tips for a second trip down the aisle

A

second wedding is a chance to focus more on what you want as a couple instead of the wedding your parents may had hoped for you. Today there are no rules for second weddings; the happy couple can customize it as they see fit. Chances are someone you know will make another trip down the aisle at one point in his or her life. Second weddings are a great way for couples to showcase their personalities and not be constrained by tradition. • Put your first wedding out of your mind. Now is not the time to make comparisons. This wedding should be all about you and your new spouse-to-be. Go for something completely different than your prior wedding so there will be no side-byside comparisons. • Choose a wedding party you really want. You can have a lavish wedding again, complete with a big bridal party. However, this time around you can choose the friends and family members you really want to stand beside you, instead of individuals you may have felt obligated to include the first time

around. • Go ahead and wear white. Tradition once stated that take-two brides were not supposed to wear white. Toss tradition aside and go ahead and do what you want. Just be sure the gown compliments your age and body shape. • Include your children in the festivities and planning. If you or your future spouse have children from a previous marriage, make them feel a part of this new blended family by including them in the second wedding. They may play a role in the ceremony, such as making a speech or reading a passage. Other brides and grooms choose to have their children walk them down the aisle. Involve the kids in the planning. They may be excited to help you choose wedding vendors or address invitations. • Personalize your event. Take the time to write your own vows, make handmade favours or single out the special people in your lives. • Feel free to be extravagant. You may be more established in life with a secure job and bigger pay cheque. Therefore you can expand the

wedding budget a little more. • Involve the groom as well. Today’s modern men want a say in their wedding just as much as the bride, say wedding experts. Make sure he is apprised of all the details and ensure that he is able to make it

to vendor appointments and the like. Just as a second wedding is a second chance for happiness, it is another opportunity to throw the wedding of your dreams.

Renewing your vows Have you ever thought about reliving the magic of the wedding ritual with your loved one? The renewing of vows is the renewing of the commitment between two spouses, a reaffirmation of their deeply held love for each other. But it is also an occasion to throw a party and share your happiness with your loved ones. Even though some couples don’t choose a significant date for renewing their vows, many opt to do it on a wedding anniversary. In fact, did you know that every wedding anniversary corresponds to a natural element? According to tradition, the groom should offer his wife a gift made from the appropriate material. It is said that

this will bring happiness to the couple. 1st anniversary: paper 2nd anniversary: cotton 5th anniversary: wood 10th anniversary: tin 15th anniversary: crystal 20th anniversary: china 25th anniversary: silver 30th anniversary: pearl 35th anniversary: coral 40th anniversary: ruby 45th anniversary: sapphire 50th anniversary: gold 55th anniversary: emerald 60th anniversary: diamond 65th anniversary: blue sapphire 70th anniversary: platinum 75th anniversary: diamond & gold 80th anniversary: oak

Tips to keep in mind when hiring a photographer

Y

ou’ve been planning the big day for ages now and you have chosen a spectacular location, dresses the bridesmaids will actually look great in, and a cake that will be the envy of the town. There is something of equal importance to everything mentioned previously— the wedding photographer. Now everyone knows someone out there with a decent camera who takes good pictures, but make no mistake, there is a world of difference between a talented amateur and a professional photographer. In an attempt to make choosing your photographer easier, think of the following five things: 1) Stay as local as you can with your photographer. Using a local photographer gives you the advantage of hiring someone who not only knows the area, but also knows some of the best natural settings for a picture. The beauty of staying local is that sometimes the photographer will make a great suggestion for a shot that you never even thought of. 2) Check out the photographer’s website. While it is true that only the best of

the best will be on a professional photographer’s website, this will at least give you a good idea of the style of that particular professional. Doing this early in the wedding planning process may also give you a few ideas in regard to the venue for your special day. 3) Interview your photographer. After you have narrowed your choices down, (including finding references for photographers you like) spend some time speaking with the photographer. This will show you whether or not you get along with the person and will allow the photographer a chance to get to know you. This also gives you a chance to let them know the style of photography you would like; artistic, ‘in the moment’, or out-of-the-box. During the interview is also a great chance to peruse any wedding albums the photographer has to look at and to see if they have the studio space available in case you want some set shots. These kinds of pictures offer the photographer the chance to control all aspects of a picture and the result is generally worth the effort. 4) Your photographer will probably

offer you a disc, flash drive or even a portable hard drive of your pictures. Find out what the cost is for prints, including some large ones suitable for framing. These professionals work with quality printers all the time and know what works and what doesn’t. While you are at it, find out what rights you have to the pictures. Sounds a little counter-intuitive, but different photographers have different rights agreements. Know what these are in advance. 5) Find out the time a photographer will need between the event and when you will get your pictures. A professional will take hundreds of shots at your wedding and will sift through them all with a fine-tooth comb to find the very best. Many will also do some subtle Photoshopping to get rid of small blemishes or enhance colour or mood. All of this takes time and delays of even a couple of months after the event to receive your pictures is not unheard of. You may be showing these pictures to your grandchildren, so it is important that these photos are the best they can be. Lastly, on the day of the big event,

if you and your wedding party and guests find that the photographer is not intrusive, gets along well with the group and acts like a true professional, don’t be afraid to tip. That little extra could reap benefits for you.

Wedding traditions:

Origins of the ring finger

T

he Western tradition of the “ring finger” began with the Romans, who believed that the fourth finger was connected directly to the heart by a vein called “the vein of love.” For this reason, the fourth finger of the left hand has been adopted through the ages as the ideal place for the wedding ring.

Making it legal in British Columbia Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage license, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage license in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme Court. If one or both individuals were divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No license is issued until the courts finalize a divorce; normally 31 days after the Courts issue the divorce decree. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious

representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the

marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not

result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

With this ring The perfect wedding band to tie the knot

S

ince time immemorial, wedding bands have symbolized the continuity of marriage. Legend has it that a wedding ring is customarily worn on the left ring finger because of the vena amoris, or “vein of love”; it was thought to have a uniquely direct connection to the heart. We know today that all the fingers have similar privileges, but your choice of wedding ring is still as important as ever. After all, you’re hoping that it will adorn your ring finger until death do you part. Your tastes, your gender, and especially your budget are the main factors to consider in choosing the right band. The metal • Gold. Whether it’s yellow, pink, or white, gold is always a safe bet. The price varies according to the number of Karats (abbreviated by K or kt). • Platinum. This metal is attractive and very durable, but more expensive. • Titanium. It’s less expensive and doesn’t scratch or fade, but it isn’t as

shiny as gold or platinum. Silver. This is typically the most affordable option, but pure silver oxidizes over time. Discretion vs. extravagance You might enjoy having a ring that’s striated, bejeweled, or engraved with a personal message from your beloved. There’s nothing to stop you from being creative and commissioning tailor-made wedding bands from your jeweler. Men typically prefer to opt for discretion and comfort; jewellery without gemstones is less fragile and thus more popular with them. And even though rings are available in an endless range of possibilities, most women still choose diamonds, which are, of course, forever. Wedding superstition holds that you shouldn’t try on your wedding bands before the big day, and that the groom-to-be should keep the rings until the wedding. The only really important rule, however, is that this day be filled with happiness.

BIRCH MEADOWS, FERNIE, BC Laurelle and Ryan’s romance started in 1984 when they were just four-years-old. It was at the annual Griz Days celebration where Laurelle schooled Ryan in an arm wrestling competition. To this day he says that it was because she is six months older than him and she was coached by her uncle. After the competition their relationship hit a stand still as it would take Ryan 24 years to heal from being beaten by a girl. They reconnected in 2009 when a mutual friend was trying to set them up but they didn’t need any help. They met again on their own and the rest is history. They had their first child, Cruz, in 2010 and his little sister Kash in 2011. They have been raising their children happily ever since. In May 2014, Ryan, with his Grandma’s rings in hand popped the question. These two love birds wasted no time and planned their wedding for October of the same year. The ceremony which was centered around the bride and groom and their two children took place at Fernie’s beautiful Birch Meadows surrounded by the majestic Canadian Rockies. They chose Birch Meadows for it’s serene, intimate qualities and views. It makes you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere when you are just minutes from town. For their reception, they chose the Day Lodge at Fernie Alpine Resort which was the perfect venue to host all of their family and friends with its comfortable atmosphere and its delightful cuisine. Laurelle and Ryan had a wonderful wedding in their hometown and Birch Meadows offered everything they were looking for. They wanted their guests to take in the beautiful town they were both born and raised in, and Birch Meadows and Fernie Alpine Resort were perfect venues to showcase Fernie.

The ceremony

PHOTOS: Kyle Hamilton

One of the most important parts of the day

S

o many components go into ensuring that your wedding day is as seamless as possible, but one of the most important parts of the day is often given the least amount of thought. It is the ceremony itself that this day is all about, so make it your own and add some personal touches. A good timeframe for a ceremony is between 20 – 30 minutes. Anything shorter will leave those that spent money and time traveling wondering why they did. Any longer and you risk losing the attention of your audience. This is especially true if it is an outdoor wedding on a hot day. A ceremony that adds in some personal touches will keep your audience engaged, but don’t push your luck by making it too long! There are certain things you can think about prior to meeting with your officiate. • Will the bride be given away or presented by a family member? To be given away is an antiquated tradition, but there are modern alternatives to this such as “who has the honour of presenting this woman to be married to this man?” A bride

can choose anybody to do this, i.e. father, mother, brother or uncle. • Unplugged message Will you want your guests to take photos during the ceremony? With the cost of photographers, what you don’t want is your audience members holding their cell phones in the air to capture “that” moment. An unplugged message at the beginning of the ceremony is becoming commonplace. • Will you write your own vows? There are many “canned” vows available online that are lovely, as well as ideas for writing your own. If you do choose to write your own vows, resist the urge to share them before the ceremony. You want to speak from the heart and have a true reaction from your significant other. This is one of the magic moments in a wedding ceremony. • Are there special people you want to recognize during the ceremony? For example, if your parents have been married for a long time, you can recognize them for the foundation they have laid for a good marriage.

• Who will your two witnesses be? The natural choice seems to be your Maid of Honour and Best Man, however there may be some other people that deserve consideration. The only requirement is that they can sign their name! • Are there any special additions to your ceremony that you would like, such as; Sand Ceremony, Rose Ceremony, Hand Fasting Ceremony, Wine Ceremony, Tree Planting, First Fight Box, Ring Warming, Readings, Butterfly Release? There are many additions that can be made to a ceremony that will add that special touch that you may be looking for. Do your research and see if any of these fit in with your vision for your day. There are multiple sites online that can help you choose which, if any, of these add-ins will complement your ceremony. • Will you be introduced at the end as Mr. and Mrs.? This is a great way to signify the end of the ceremony and the beginning of your marriage. Once you have decided which of these things you want incorporated into your ceremony, it is only a

matter of putting it together. If you follow the sequence below, and add in three of the special touches above (i.e. two readings and a Sand ceremony) you will find your ceremony is well balanced and within the 20 – 30 minute timeframe. 1. Why you have gathered today 2. Presentment or giving away of bride 3. Welcome guests and thank them for coming 4. Legal bits, i.e. the part you need to have to make the ceremony legal 5. Exchanging of Vows 6. Giving of Rings 7. Signing of the Register 8. Announcements 9. Pronouncement 10. Introduction Your officiate will be able to help you with the flow and the structure of your ceremony, but the thought you put into it beforehand will add the magic. There is no right and wrong when it comes to YOUR ceremony. Think outside the box and put together a ceremony that is the highlight of your day, not just an aside!

The dress

It’s time to start trying on dresses

I

t’s the big day before the big day! You’ve looked through the magazines, visited the websites and read the blogs, but now it’s time to start trying on dresses. This can be both a joyful and a nerve-racking time. After all, this is not just any dress, it’s THE DRESS. And the options seem endless. Strapless, sleeved, big and full, sleek, full length, tea length, white, off white, belted, free flowing and on and on. So how do you know where you start? Here are a few tips. • Relax. This is the best advice, not just about the dress, but about the entire wedding process. These are big decisions, but keep the JOY in

the process. Relax, have fun and enjoy. • Bridal Shops vs The Internet. You may pay a little more at a bridal shop but it’s well worth it. For starters, you actually get to try on the gowns! You might think you found the perfect gown online, but until you try it on you can’t know for sure. Material, fit, and cut all matter, and until you actually see, feel and try on a gown, you just can’t be sure. Bridal shops are generally very good at guiding you through the selections, narrowing the field based on body type, budget, and tastes. The bridal shop will be there for you through the entire process, from selection to the final fitting.

• Be Open. Allow your gown consultant to suggest some gowns for you, even if the selections are totally off your radar. It’s easy to get stuck on certain designs. Sometimes a fresh perspective is exactly what you need to find the perfect look. • The Entourage. Shopping for the dress is a big deal, and it should be a wonderful experience. Of course you want to share it with your Mom and your best friends. It’s wonderful to travel with the full entourage, but don’t lose sight that it’s your day, your dress and your opinion that ultimately matters. The more people you have with you, the more opinions that will come your way.

So welcome the opinions, but don’t lose focus that in the end, it’s your opinion that matters. • Be Sure! It’s important to note that with most gowns, once the order is processed there are no returns. So don’t be impulsive, be sure! When ordering your gown, be honest and realistic about sizing. Most brides are shooting for a wedding day size, but don’t put yourself in a difficult position by ordering a gown size that may not fit. A seamstress can make alterations, but you will need to allow sufficient time for the process. The bridal shop will assist with sizing and guide you through the fittings and alterations.

Venues The possibilities are endless

I

f this question has been sending you into a panic, you can now relax. Whether you’re planning a lavish white wedding or an intimate ceremony atop a mountain, the East Kootenay is the perfect location for you. Churches: For many, weddings are synonymous with churches, securing their title as the number one place to walk down the aisle. The communities of the East Kootenay are home to houses for a variety of denominations and will be able to provide a ceremony that satisfies your spiritual side. A traditional church wedding will add an air of importance and reverence to your wedding. Golf & Country Clubs: The contrast of manicured greens against a mountain background provide a stunning setting for wedding photos, not to mention the freedom of indoor and outdoor spaces that clubhouses offer for your reception. Combined with expert staff and plenty of local connections, choose one of the region’s several golf courses as the ideal location for your wedding. Resorts: The resorts of the East Kootenay are renowned

tourist destinations, but even locals will feel like they’re on vacation with a wedding at one of these famous locations. Consider Panorama Mountain Village in Columbia Valley, Creston’s Mountain Park Resort, the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino between Cranbrook and Kimberley, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden or the Elk Valley’s Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake Lodge. The scenery and facilities at any of these destinations are secondto-none. Restaurants and reception rooms: In addition to an amazing menu, look for an atmosphere that is warming. In Fernie, the Best Western Plus Mountain Lodge and Red Tree Lodge have all the facilities to suit any sized function. Creston’s Skimmerhorn Winery offers an outstanding menu complete with local wine to complement your meal, or consider Strand’s Old House Restaurant in Invermere for a luxurious dining experience. Frank’s Steak & Schnitzel Haus in Cranbrook offers good old-fashioned comfort food to satisfy your guests. Bon appetit!

I

f you love the outdoors, the East Kootenay provides a seemingly endless number of options for your big day. The Annex in Fernie features a beautiful park alongside the Elk River, while the old mine ruins at Hosmer create an interesting contrast in scenery. Soak in the summer sun at Lake Windermere or visit the Radium Hot Springs to float away in relaxing warm water. The orchards and wineries near Creston are perfect for sampling local produce while the Cominco Gardens in Kimberley provide an oasis of blooms to complement a great wedding celebration. For the most adventurous of lovebirds, hiking to the top of a mountain delivers magnificent views of the valley below, or say “I do” with a backdrop of sheer cliffs and crystal clear water at Silver Springs Lakes near Elko. If a steep hike isn’t for you, a gentler way to reach panoramic mountain views can be found on the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort gondola. History buffs can visit one of the many local museums to explore artifacts of days past. The Pynelogs Cultural Centre, Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre and the Arts Station in Fernie are other enjoyable indoor venues for those looking to add a little culture to their celebrations. Of course, if your wedding guests really want to step back in time, Fort Steele Heritage town has more than 60 restored and reconstructed buildings that contain shops, restaurants and even candy from the bygone pioneer era.

TRADITION OF Throwing rice at weddings Rice was traditionally used to symbolize fertility and prosperity.

T

here are many traditions for weddings that can be traced back thousands of years to early civilization. One enduring tradition is to throw rice at the newly betrothed. For the safety of birds and other animal life, rice has been switched to birdseed in recent times. Some wedding traditions are based on very real needs of ancient times. Others are based on superstitions or existing etiquette at the time they were initially practiced. Throwing rice remains a timeless tradition that many couples still enjoy. Everyone attending the wedding gets to participate in throwing rice, or whatever is being used in lieu of rice, be it birdseed, confetti or even bubbles. Couples can even borrow from traditions in other countries. In France, people throw wheat, a symbol of bounty, after the ceremony. Italians toss candy and sugared nuts over couples, for sweetness in marriage. Rice was traditionally used to symbolize fertility and

prosperity. Wheat was also very much used in ancient wedding ceremonies for the same reasons. When guests threw rice at the bride and groom at a wedding, they were symbolically wishing them a lifetime full of children and good fortune. Some cultures even ate a meal of rice before the wedding to guarantee further prosperity. Different cultures have long harbored different perspectives on throwing rice. Some even believed it fed the evil spirits that, though uninvited, crashed the wedding. It was thought that well-fed spirits would not wreak havoc on the happy day. Rice and wheat were also thought to represent virginity and wholesomeness by some. A virginal bride used to wear white and carried a stalk of wheat. Single women rushed after the bride hoping to get a few pieces of rice so they would be the next person to walk down the aisle. Despite its foundation in superstition, throwing rice has remained a staple of weddings today.
