Making it legal in British Columbia Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage license, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage license in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No license is issued until the courts finalize a divorce; normally 31 days after the Courts issue the divorce decree. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered

with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage.

Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change

of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Setting your WEDDING DATE: four things to consider Are you and your partner about to take the leap into marital bliss? Here are four things to look into before you send out your save the dates. 1. The season First, decide during what time of year you want to get married. Every season has its own charm, but know that the high season for weddings is over the summer. If you’re dealing with a small budget, consider an offseason ceremony to get the most bang for your buck. Winter weddings can be absolutely stunning. 2. The day of the week If you feel like getting married on a Monday, there’s nothing stopping you from doing just that! However, the traditional Saturday wedding is a convenient option if most of your guests work Monday to Friday. Getting married on a Saturday is more expensive than on a Friday or a Sunday though, and you’ll need to reserve early to ensure that your dream venue is available. 3. The schedules Open up your planner and carefully study your own schedule, and then ask your close friends and family about their own plans for the foreseeable future. Remember to consider time off work, vacations and holidays,

various appointments and other significant events (birthdays, baptisms, other weddings, etc.) that are already planned among those in your circle to avoid any major scheduling conflicts. 4. The professionals Before you send out your invitations, make sure that the pros you want to hire are available on the chosen date. If you have your heart set on a certain photographer or caterer, secure their services as soon as possible so you don’t get left high and dry. Kyle Hamilton Photography

Four good reasons to get married during the winter

T

he idea of getting married during the winter might sound rather bold, if not outright grim. But winter weddings actually have quite a few upsides! Here are just a few.

1. Lower costs Getting married in the winter will save you money. How? For one, you’ll be purchasing your attire at a slow time of the year for merchants. What’s more, florists, decorators and caterers may be more willing to negotiate. 2. Scheduling flexibility It’ll be a lot easier to secure reservations for your big day: churches, reception halls, caterers and entertainers are all usually less busy during the winter. 3. Seasonal magic Get inspired by the magic of winter to add a special touch to your wedding. Turn heads by making a grand entrance aboard a horse-drawn sleigh or a dogsled, and have your photographer capture the wedding party under sparkling, frosted trees. 4. Cozy memories Treat your guests to the coziest of weddings by serving them hot beverages by the fire or giving them warm blankets as a gift. Winter weddings are both highly romantic and budget-friendly.

Wedding invitation essentials Are you about to have your wedding invitations printed? Here’s a list of things you’ll need to include: The save-the-date card This optional complement to the wedding invitation should be sent out six to eight months before the event. It’s especially important for destination or multi-day weddings and should include the following information: • The names of the bride and groom • The date of the event • The city in which the wedding will take place The invitation card The invitations themselves should be sent out six to eight weeks before the wedding and contain further information on the event, including: • The date and time of the wedding • The location and schedule of the reception • Driving instructions • The wedding’s theme, if applicable • An indication of whether children are welcome or not • Contact info (email address, website, phone number) The RSVP card It’s crucial to include an RSVP card with your wedding invitations so that invitees can confirm whether or not they’re able to attend the event as well as indicate if someone will be accompanying them. Be sure to provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Wedding Website DO’S AND DON’TS Technology continues to infiltrate all areas of life. So it should come as no surprise that apps and digital organization play a prominent role in many couples’ weddings. Couples may now feel it is necessary to design a wedding website to keep their guests up-to-date. Though they’re useful when planning a wedding, websites are not a musthave, according to bridal etiquette experts. However, those who choose to delve into the world of wedding websites can keep these pointers in mind when navigating. DO use the wedding website as a central hub for putting pertinent information about the wedding that may not be covered on invitations or

save-the-date cards. DON’T ignore the potential for identity theft and privacy. Wedding websites can put quite a deal of personal information out for public consumption. Not only will the website advertise when the wedding takes place (when your home and the homes of all your guests will be empty), but also it could include birthdays, maiden names, and other information that would normally be more difficult to track down. DO use a wedding website provider that gives you the option to password protect your website. Urge guests not to share this protected information with others. DON’T caption engagement photos, bachelorette party photos and more with dates and names on the wedding website and on other social media. DO skip the wedding website if you are strongly opposed to it. When properly composed, a wedding

invitation will convey all the pertinent details. A group email or phone calls can alert guests to any changes after the fact. DON’T forget to link to gift registries. DO use the wedding website to collect responses and then make a

table seating arrangement online. This will help you stay more organized and streamlined. Wedding websites are yet another tool couples can use to stay organized as they plan their weddings.

Eleven-step guide to the perfect wedding Every couple wants their wedding to be absolutely flawless. Achieving perfection, however, requires quite a bit of organizing. Here are a few things to remember when planning your big day.

8. Shop for your attire Don’t forget about makeup and hair trials, and start shopping as early as possible so you can find all the best deals. Also think about how you’ll accessorize your outfit for the ceremony.

1. Choose the date Make sure your closest friends and family members will be able to attend. If your sister’s pregnant or your best friend is planning a trip, choose your date strategically to avoid disappointment.

10. Choose the menu Is your goal to please as many people as possible or to step off the beaten path? Do you need to plan vegetarian options or kid-friendly snacks? Determine what type of meal will be served at your wedding, and don’t forget drinks and desserts.

2. Draft the guest list Make a list of all the people you’d like to see at your wedding. But keep your budget in mind, as more people means higher costs. 3. Make your reservations It’s a good idea to book the venues for your ceremony and reception as soon as possible, especially if you’re getting married during the summer. Popular venues are often reserved up to a year in advance. 4. Send out invitations The earlier you send out your save the date cards and invitations, the

better. Be sure to ask invitees to RSVP. This is also a good time to designate bridesmaids and groomsmen. 5. Draw up a floor plan Make sure to visit the venue as many times as you need to. If you’re planning to hire a band, display a slideshow or organize a karaoke session, confirm that the location allows it.

6. Decorate the venue Get in touch with your florist and decorator to discuss your ideas and ask for advice. If you’re on a tight budget, consider taking care of the decorating yourself — just make sure you start early.

11. Immortalize the day Photobooths and disposable cameras are great for capturing candid memories, but you’ll probably want to have a professional wedding photographer on location as well.

7. Choose an MC Who will be the master of ceremonies for the event? Someone you know, or a hired pro? Also think about the music: band or DJ?

Lucky for you, your loved ones will be in charge of planning the bachelor and bachelorette parties. Make sure they know what you like!

Four tips for a crowd-pleasing wedding meal Putting together a wedding menu that aims to please everyone is no easy task. Here are a few tips to maximize your chances of success. 1. Avoid strong-tasting meat. Not everyone is a fan of lamb, game meat or fish. Poultry, on the other hand, is usually a sure bet. Provide more than one meal option if you can. 2. Mix it up. If you’re serving beef as a main, consider vegetarian appetizers or seafood hors-d’oeuvres. Avoid serving the same protein in more than one course. 3. Trust the experts. Don’t be afraid to ask your caterer for suggestions. If you’ve hired a chef, include his or her speciality dishes on the menu. 4. Have a plan B. If there are children, picky eaters or people with dietary restrictions among your guests, try to accommodate their preferences as much as you can. They’ll definitely appreciate the thought.

Intimate, personal & meaningful

Mr. and Mrs. Fernie were married at Maiden Lake in Fernie, B.C. on Friday, September 22. They came all the way from London, UK, to be wed, and were witnessed by Fernie Mayor, Mary Giuliano and her husband, Nick. Their very Canadian wedding was followed by a celebration in Tim Hortons, where their wedding cake was substituted for carrot muffins. Andrew Fernie and Tichafara Chisaka met seven years ago, and have travelled together to many places. Approximately fifteen years ago, while Andrew’s parents were traveling via train across Canada, they picked up a pamphlet advertising skiing in Fernie.

They didn’t know, until then, that there was a town named Fernie in British Columbia. They brought this back with the to the UK and gave it to Andy. “It stuck in the back of my mind that there was a town called Fernie,” said Andy, adding that when he read the pamphlet, something in it resonated with him. He knew he wanted to get married there. In January of 2017, a travel exhibition came to London, advertising places to travel in the world. When the couple saw an exhibit hosted by the Canadian National Parks Service, they stopped to inquire. They noticed that Fernie was being advertised for its beautiful scenery, historical downtown and endless skiing. It was then that they decided to take a vacation there. “We thought it would be pretty cool to be here on a holiday in Canada, and get married in Fernie,” said Tichafara. “It felt like something we could talk

about for years to come.” When the couple flew into Calgary, it was overcast. They couldn’t see their surroundings as their plane landed. As they drove into Fernie, settled in, and woke up the next day, they emerged from their room at the Lizard Creek Lodge and caught their breath. “There’s mountains in every direction, it’s just amazing,” said Andy. “It’s a stunning place,” Tichafara added. One year ago, Andy proposed to Tichafara on top of a mountain in the UK. They felt it was only fitting to be married among them. In addition to the mountains, the Fernie’s noted how everyone had been so friendly and welcoming. “It’s got a real nice vibe about it, I like this town,” said Andy. “We’ll be back.”

Connected crowns In traditional Greek Orthodox weddings, the bride and groom wear crowns joined by a ribbon during the ceremony to symbolize their union.

Lucky charms The four tokens of luck that many brides carry on their wedding day — something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue — have their origin in an Old English rhyme. A fifth item that didn’t make it into the mainstream was also included in the original poem: “a sixpence in your shoe.”

Stolen bride A bride getting kidnapped at her wedding may sound like a nightmare, but it’s actually part of a fun Romanian tradition. During dinner, a group of friends of the newlyweds steals the bride. Then, the groom must find where she’s held captive. If he doesn’t find her by midnight, he’ll need to pay a ransom (usually a bottle of vodka or two).

Everything red A tribute to the cult of the sun, traditional Chinese weddings are filled with red. Accessories, clothing and flowers all feature a bright crimson hue to symbolize happiness, prosperity, success and luck.

Splendid queen A typical Moroccan wedding puts the bride in the spotlight. After undergoing countless beauty rituals, including henna, the queen of the evening makes her grand entrance atop a magnificent litter (a seat carried by people).

Herbal bath Before their union is made official, Indian couples take an herbal bath, their wrists joined by a sash. This soothing ritual is said to bring longevity and fertility to the future newlyweds.

Symbolic sweets At a traditional Italian wedding, the newlyweds give each of their guests five white candies. These customary sweets represent fertility, health, longevity, happiness and prosperity.

Holey sock During Danish weddings, guests make a hole in the groom’s right sock. Why? According to tradition, no other woman would want to be with someone so shabbily dressed, leaving the new husband no other choice but to remain faithful to his new bride.

Broken dishes Before a German wedding, guests break dishes and try to make as much noise as they can while doing so. Said to chase away evil spirits, this good-luck ritual is called Polterabend. Once it’s over, the future newlyweds must learn to overcome difficulties together by picking up the pieces.

few things you don’t want to lose sight of.

The Wilson’s knew they wanted to get married; it was just a matter of when. They also didn’t want to rush into it.

“Wouldn’t you say, we really tried to do that?” asked Leann, turning to Thomas.

After they graduated high school together as grad dates, they packed their bags and set off south to go to school in Calgary. Leaving their hometown of Yellowknife, NWT, was not easy, but it broadened their horizons and eventually led to them settling in Fernie, B.C.

Finally, in July of last year, Thomas proposed. He admitted he likes to take his time with things.

The middle of their life was much different than their beginning. The couple pursued post secondary school in Calgary, and then found that they needed to grow in life, on their own. They parted ways, traveled to far away places, but eventually found their way back to each other. Leann and Thomas were separated for a five years. While Leann was overseas, Thomas pursued carpentry and landed a job in Fernie arriving in 2011. When Leann returned, they moved back in together.

The last bit of evening light was disappearing on a rainy Monday night, and Thomas insisted they take their Sheepdog, Murphy, for a walk. They had a mission to get to the river and walk alongside it before the sun went down completely. There was just enough light to see the Three Sisters illuminated in the distance. The couple made it to the river, and Thomas asked Leann to marry him.

“This town just gives off such good vibes,” said Thomas, in speaking about putting down roots in Fernie. “The people, the community, everything it has going for it. It’s a hard place to leave once you get a taste of that.” Leann came to Fernie later than Thomas, but only felt like a newcomer for a very short time. She said that the people she met were so open, and welcoming, that it soon felt like home. Thomas has always wondered what it would be like to live in another ski town, “...Just to see if it’s as good as we have it here.” Together the couple decided Fernie would be their forever home, and the place they would exchange their vows. “We were always something special to each other,” said Leann. “And I think that once we realized that life wasn’t as good apart, nothing quite was the

Leann was on her way to Montreal on a girl’s trip. “I wasn’t going to let you go to Montreal without a ring on that finger,” said Thomas with a laugh.

Leann admitted that the build up to this moment was huge. Throughout their relationship they had so many big moments and Leann thought many times, ‘this could be it!’. “It was so amazing that it was at a completely unexpected time, and such an ‘us’ time. Walking our dog together, by the river. Just being us. It was actually perfect in that way,” she said. They were married and had their reception at the Rusty Edge on September 16, 2017. The Wilson’s spoke about getting married, how their experience was, and shared some advice for those starting to plan their big day. “Stay strong on what’s important to you as individuals, and as a couple,” said Leann. “It’s so easy to get caught up in it all. There’s so much that people say you should do, or that you feel like you have to do. Really, when it comes down to it, it’s such an important day for you as a couple; not losing sight of that, maybe write down those top

“That’s exactly what I was thinking, but I had no idea how to say it,” replied Thomas. The newlyweds also tried to not let the planning of the wedding consume the more than a year leading up to it. “I think that’s a huge tip too, to not let it take over,” said Leann. “Still be the two of you, in a relationship.” They also found that for the wedding, there were so many finite details, which took careful, intricate planning beforehand. In the moment, everything passed so quickly and they only saw the wedding from their point of view. They found it interesting afterwards to hear about how their friends and family saw the day. Leann and Thomas focused on not losing sleep over the decorations and décor. As important as those things were leading up to the wedding, they said that this was the last thing that crossed their minds on their wedding day. “You’re so overwhelmed with amazing love from everyone around you, that it didn’t really matter,” said Leann. The Wilson’s knew they wanted a smaller wedding, but found that there were so many important people in their lives that they wanted there. Because of this, it became bigger than they had anticipated. Ninetysix people attended their wedding, and the Wilson’s found that they were able to visit and converse with most of them. They found this to be a good number. “I think it’s surprising how… You know it’s going to be a good day but never really have you ever felt that loved by so many people, in one day,” said Leann. “So much love, in one room. It’s such a cool feeling.”

Reconnect during wedding planning Wedding planning can be intense and often requires dedication and many hours of work. Coordinating a wedding often requires that couples make many different decisions and spend a considerable amount of time in the wedding-planning trenches.

Schedule time for fun. Do not let wedding planning be allconsuming. Schedule days that allow you to enjoy yourselves together without having to think about or discuss your pending nuptials. This may include date nights that may have fallen by the wayside since getting engaged or periodic day trips to get away from it all. Explore your mutual hobbies or try something new.

Couples expend so much energy planning their weddings that it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture - namely the relationship that is the basis for the marriage in the first place. But as easy as it can be to get lost in wedding planning, couples can use this time together to connect on a deeper level and learn to work cooperatively. Divide and conquer. Separate wedding planning duties so that both of you feel you are contributing equally and no one person gets overly stressed out. Stress can lead to short tempers and arguments. Establish a mutual budget. Even the healthiest couple argues over finances from time to time, but

budgetary debates should not set a negative tone for wedding planning. Couples should discuss their potential budget before they even begin to plan

their weddings, and both partners should do their best to compromise while also understanding where the other person is coming from.

Learn to laugh at the little things. Not every detail will go off without a hitch. How you react as a couple may influence how much you enjoy your wedding. Recognize that certain things will not go your way, but that unforeseen circumstances will not ruin your wedding day, no matter how unpleasant they may seem. Laugh at what cannot be changed and recognize that, in the long run, the details you think are major today may actually prove trivial when you look back on your wedding day in the years to come.

Honeymoon

A destination with your name on it

Naturally Yours From our beautiful outdoor ceremony site to the scenic mountain chalet and the more traditional banquet rooms at the lodge—the Rocky Mountain wedding that’s perfectly yours.

If you want your honeymoon to be everything you’ve always dreamed of, choose your destination carefully. Whether you’re outdoor enthusiasts, insatiable foodies, hopeless romantics or something in between, there’s sure to be a little corner of paradise that suits you to a T. Here are a few ideas. Romantic Paris is the poster child of romantic honeymoon destinations. From exploring Montmartre hand in hand, to contemplating the Seine, to immortalizing your love on the Pont des Arts, the City of Lights has infinite potential for tender moments. Venice, with its gondolas, palaces and art scene, is another option for a romantic getaway. Fall under the spell of Casanova’s hometown, where some of history’s most famous love stories were set. Epicurean San Sebastian in Spain is internationally renowned for its culinary scene. With one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-rated restaurants in the world, honeymooners definitely won’t run out of spots to enjoy a romantic dinner. Mexico, Vietnam, and Italy’s Amalfi Coast are also excellent choices for a flavourful honeymoon. Intimate If your idea of a perfect honeymoon involves you, your new husband or wife, and no one else, fly away to the Maldives! Located at the centre of the Indian Ocean, this republic encompasses more than 1,190 islands, most of which are uninhabited. You’re sure to find a secluded spot where you can enjoy turquoise waters and endless white sandy beaches.

How couples can benefit from hiring local wedding vendors Local vendors are often a go-to choice when couples are planning their wedding ceremonies and receptions. As the “shop local” movement grows in popularity, weddings present a prime opportunity to embrace this movement. Couples may have different ideas regarding where to tie the knot, but local vendors can be hired regardless of geography. Brides magazine says the biggest factor influencing wedding location is the size of the guest list and the number of people who wouldn’t be able to attend if the wedding was in a particular locale. Hometowns might be the traditional choice regarding wedding location, but the XO Group says one in four couples now host destination weddings. Once couples choose a town or city to host their weddings, they can begin exploring the benefits of working with locally-based vendors. Familiarity Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have pre-existing relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

Starting at $4,250 for the weekend

Proximity Local vendors can meet with brides and grooms more readily throughout the planning process, making things less stressful on the happy couple. This also makes it easier to drop off deposits, attend meetings, make fitting appointments, or attend styling sessions. Savings Couples who travel for their weddings and employ local vendors will not have to pack as much. Using local vendors eliminates the need to bring along bulky dresses, decorative items, flowers, and much more. Plus, couples needn’t pay to transport and house vendors brought along from back home. Environment Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings. Customization Working with local vendors often translates into getting more personalized service and attention than mass retailers or merchants can provide. Going local when choosing wedding vendors is an increasingly popular choice among couples about to tie the knot.

How to choose your wedding photographer Are you looking for a photographer that will immortalize every magical moment of your wedding, all while bringing out everyone’s best side? Follow these steps to make sure you succeed in your quest. Do your homework Start by making a list of local professional photographers and have a look at their portfolios, eliminating the ones you don’t like right away. Seeing the work of different pros will help you determine whether you prefer a romantic, vintage, festive, or natural style for your own wedding photos. Then, draw up a (short) list of the photographers whose talents you appreciated and whose fees suit your budget.

Alpine Lodge FERNIE, BC For a beautiful, intimate mountain wedding.

Meet the candidates Once your preliminary selection is made, contact each candidate to set up a meeting. After all, even if you really like their work, you still have to make sure that your personalities don’t clash. Remember that your photographer will be almost as close as your shadow on your big day. Consequently, it’s vital that you feel comfortable with the person — your state of mind, positive or not, will shine through in your photos. Sign the contract The last step, but not the least, consists in making your agreement official. It’s important to sign a contract, because it is legally binding and covers you in case of unforeseen events or misunderstandings.

A bouquet for every bride The perfect bouquet is one that highlights the bride’s attire without stealing the spotlight from her. Here are a few popular bridal bouquet styles to consider: • Round. Ideal if you’re on the petite side. Keep it simple, delicate and short. As a general rule, avoid dense foliage, cascading bouquets and long stems. That being said, longer stems can be flattering if you’re quite curvy. • Cascading. Perfect for tall, thin brides. Choose a bouquet with long stems and cascading foliage to highlight your waist. • White. Great if your dress is colourful; not so great if it’s white or offwhite. • Colourful. For energetic brides who aren’t afraid to turn heads. If your dress is also colourful, make sure you show it to your florist to avoid unfortunate clashes. Brides should choose their bouquet according to their body type, their personality and their dress.

Bouquet Toss 101 It is customary for the bride to share her good fortune by tossing her bouquet into a crowd of single female wedding guests. With a bit of luck, whoever catches the flowers will, legend says, get married within the coming year. If you want to go through with this classic custom during your own wedding but aren’t sure exactly when the ideal moment is, read on for some insight. If a photo shoot is planned for after the ceremony, hang on to your bouquet to include it in your pictures. You’ll have plenty of time to toss it later on during the reception, once the ambiance has warmed up and your guests are ready for a friendly floral fight. After enjoying a delectable meal — most likely interrupted by several tender kisses — keep the fun going by gathering all eligible dames on the dance floor. Get into position and launch away! Your legendary toss is sure to put a smile on someone’s face and kick off an unforgettable evening.

TWO IS BETTER If you’re attached to your magnificent bridal bouquet and you don’t want to part from it during the tossing, the solution is simple: ask your florist to prepare a second, more modest bouquet specifically for the toss. This way you can carry on the tradition while saving your gorgeous bouquet for yourself!

An outdoor wedding? Be prepared Are you dreaming of a wedding in the sunshine and a reception under the stars? For your big day to be as magical as you’d hoped, you’re going to have to think of everything beforehand. The layout of the site Choose an easily accessible area that is as flat as possible to avoid wobbly tables or runoff if it rains. Also, be sure to notify any neighbours of your plans so they can be respectful of your need for a peaceful ambiance.

In case of rain, a marquis tent or other shelter is essential for guests, musicians and caterers. Be sure to organize a supply of umbrellas at the entrance, as well as mats and towels. The evening could be cool, so providing shawls or blankets for your guests is also a good idea. And don’t forget that mosquitoes could turn up at the party uninvited; it’s another thing to think about and prepare for. The facilities Toilets, water, and electricity: do you have everything you need? The caterers may need to rent a refrigerated truck, so be sure to let them know which facilities will be at their disposal. Set up a sturdy dance floor as well for all those ladies in stiletto heels. Next comes some ambient lighting: strings of fairy lights, candles with covers for the flames and lanterns will set the mood. And don’t forget to light the paths to the toilets and parking area. Make sure you plan enough time and helping hands to set everything up. Transforming a backyard into an idyllic reception area isn’t something that can be done overnight.

The weather Don’t bury your head in the sand; the weather could thwart your plans in lots of different ways. Choose heavy decorations that will stay in place if it gets windy. A warm, sunny day would be fantastic, but a heatwave could make your guests feel really uncomfortable. For a summer wedding, make sure you have some shady corners, parasols and cold refreshments.

sentiments can live on indefinitely on social media. Giving a toast can induce anxiety, but some nerves can be relieved simply by doing one’s homework and not procrastinating. Writing tips A person giving a toast is trying to gain the attention of a group of people who may not be very attentive. These tips can improve the content of the toasts and their delivery. • Keep ‘you’ out of it. This toast is not about you. It’s about the person you are honouring. Therefore, do not put any self-congratulatory messages in the toast. Make it all about the person — even beginning the toast with that person’s name. • Hook people in. Open the toast with a good joke or anecdote that will help introduce the person of honour. For example, Jake is a great guy because he’s the type of person who will offer to meet you at your dorm room at 2 a.m. with pizza and beer to get you through a study session. Too bad he has a horrible sense of direction and repeatedly shows up at the wrong door.

Check us out at www.zenmountainfloat.com, to see our organic & natural approach along with our cutting edge facial services and Spa & Bridal packages!

• Tell a story. Reference the person in the toast, other audience members, and even yourself if you can be painted in a self-deprecating light. • Keep it short. This is a toast, not a monologue. Be brief so that the audience doesn’t lose interest. Set a five-minute limit. • Wrap it up. Conclude the toast by tying the story back to the introduction and making sure to include the audience once more. This will help you get the biggest laughs and applause.
