Celebrate Your Success!

A Message from School District 5 G

raduation is an important milestone, a rite of passage steeped in tradition, pomp and circumstance. Garbed in traditional cap and gown, surrounded by classmates and educators, parents, grandparents, family and friends, your name rings out and you walk across the stage to receive your diploma. Afterwards, there is celebration, a chance to dress up, pictures to be taken and a prom to attend. For the Class of 2020, graduation will look very different. This isn’t the senior year you anticipated following thirteen years of hard work and study. As much as we wish we could give you all the tradition, pomp and circumstance you deserve, we cannot. As we acknowledge your loss, we also acknowledge and celebrate your fortitude, flexibility and forbearance. As Spring Break ended and schools remained closed, you continued your studies at home. You did it with computers, Zoom, group chats and phone calls from your teachers. You persevered! You adapted, became more resourceful and innovative not only in your studies but in how you interacted with others, how you kept your social bonds strong and intact.

These circumstances may in fact be your greatest teacher, as the challenge of this moment continues to cultivate your resiliency, as you clarify your purpose, your value system and your character. Not since World War II has a graduating class been called to step into the future with more purpose and less certainty. Like those who graduated during WWII, you are being asked to “grow up faster” than previous graduating classes and like them, have come face-to-face with what really matters; begin to think about how you –blessed with a world-class education— might act and work in service to yourself, your community and the world. Be brave. Be bold. Believe in yourself and in a better world. Go forth with the force of your convictions, the beauty of your dreams and the strength of your character. Sincerely, Frank Lento, Chair, SD5, on behalf of SD5 Trustees Silke Yardley, Superintendent, SD5 Alan Rice, Secretary-Treasurer, SD5

Fernie Secondary School Principal’s Message

W

ow… What a school year this has been! When we started this school year in September, we could not have predicted how it would end.

On behalf of Fernie Secondary School and our staff, I extend our sincere congratulations to the Class of 2020.

As you take a moment to view the bright, talented, creative and athletic young men and women who make up this year’s class, I hope that you share the optimism and best wishes for the incredible futures that await each of our graduates. As their principal, I have appreciated getting to know each of our graduates this year. In a school system, it truly takes a village to get to this moment. I know that each teacher from Kindergarten until today are honoured to have contributed in some small way to the accomplishments of our students.

This year’s graduates have experienced grief. They have overcome challenges and have demonstrated the perseverance necessary to continue toward achieving success. They have arrived at this graduation as a skilled and determined group who are ready to tackle the next step towards entering the workforce or post-secondary training or education.

To our graduates: As you move forward beyond high school into a time of change, uncertainty and opportunity, I encourage you to trust yourself. Trust yourself to make difficult decisions and to persevere. You are strong and you are resilient. Go out into the world, find

your place and make a difference. Be proud of your accomplishments and remember: you are just getting started! The Commencement ceremony for this year’s students will be limited to the graduates only and those who are directly organizing the event. We would like to thank our local community for the generous scholarships, bursaries and awards you have provided our students. Your generosity will go a long way towards helping our students get off to a good start. Thank-you to the Class of 2020 for your leadership and contributions to the Fernie Secondary School Community. You have made all of us proud. Congratulations and we wish you all well in your future. Have a safe and fun graduation! Erin Hay, Principal, Fernie Secondary School

The Fernie Academy Head of School Message

I

n celebrating the convocation of the first class of the decade, we recognize the many accomplishments of our tenth group of graduates! This class represents many landmarks for TFA, one of which is the undertaking of the final weeks of their senior year in a fashion no one could have anticipated. These young people face unprecedented times how they respond will define their character.

We prepare our graduates for the future and encourage lifelong learning by asking our community of students, their families and our teachers to work together. We have built a strong liberal educational experience emphasizing academics, athletics and arts – most of our busy graduates leave us with over 150 credits, exceeding the 80 required by the BC Ministry of Education. Academy students are challenged to learn and develop in venues beyond their regular classroom through public speaking, science fairs, debates of topical issues, international travel, local field trips and community involvement, athletic and academic competitions, school plays, volunteering and raising awareness about those less fortunate.

Our determined team of faculty are committed to the complete education of every student. Their care and attention has laid the foundation for the future success of our graduates. I would like to thank and recognize all members of our team for their tireless efforts and dedication to each individual student.

We have worked as a community to ensure that our graduates have learnt the values of hard work, flexibility and empathy. We trust that they feel confident and are well prepared to succeed in their chosen fields. We have challenged, nurtured and respected these individuals and have had the pleasure

of watching them grow. We wish all the graduates of 2020, a happy, healthy and prosperous future.

While this spring may not be the celebration our students were anticipating, I know that this is not the last time they will be celebrated! Our TFA graduates are resilient and strong young men and women, with plans and goals, and a bountiful future ahead. Our graduates are ready to face what is ahead, their character will guide them. Make good choices, stay safe. Jocelyn Sombrowski, Head of School

TFA Mission Statement: Through active learning experiences, in partnership with the family and community, each student is encouraged to achieve their full potential in academics, arts and athletics.

Sparwood Secondary School Principal’s Message

I

t seems like we were just starting the year and here we are getting ready to celebrate Sparwood Secondary School’s Class of 2020 Commencement. Our entire world changed in March of 2020, including how we have to celebrate this year’s graduates. Because the COVID-19 Pandemic has resulted in having to social distance and not have large gatherings there have been many changes for this graduating class. They have had to make drastic changes to learn online from home, adapt to changing technologies like connecting to secure Zoom & Teams classrooms, and interact with teachers in a new way. Thank you to all the graduates and the staff at Sparwood Secondary for being so resilient during these uncertain times. This year our ceremony will take place on June 23, 2020 at 1:00 pm in the Sparwood Secondary School Gymnasium or at the Sparwood Rec Center. The Ceremony will consist of the 40 grads only who will be socially distance throughout the venue. Grads will be honoured individually and called to the stage to receive their diploma and scholarships. During this part of the ceremony as each grad is honoured their parents will enter the gymnasium to watch their son/daughter receive their diploma and awards. The entire ceremony will be broadcast via live streaming. We are sad that the ceremony cannot be open to the public as our grad has always been a community event, but in celebration with and for the community, upon leaving the school grounds, the plan is to have a Fire Department and RCMP escort of vehicles drive through the town where the Grad Banners will be hanging. However, this plan may change to align with the provincial health

orders for public gatherings. The Class of 2020 is a versatile group of students. They are athletically, academically and artistically inclined. At Sparwood Secondary we believe in lifelong learning, and every year our graduation class leaves with the knowledge that they have not only graduated but they are prepared to deal with change in this ever changing world. Class of 2020 you have made us proud. Your future experiences will be filled with new choices, but I ask you to remember your roots and be proud of where you came from. Keep the memories of your high school experiences with you always. On behalf of the administration and staff of Sparwood Secondary School, as well as, all the other teachers (both Elementary and Secondary) who have contributed to your education, I would like to offer the Sparwood Secondary Class of 2020 our congratulations! REMEMBER PLEASE HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE GRADUATION!! Frank Sopko, Principal, Sparwood Secondary School

Congratulations, Graduates!

Elkford Secondary School Principal’s Message

O

n behalf of Elkford Secondary School, staff and students, I wish to extend my congratulations to the Class of 2020.

High School Graduation is about celebrating what has been achieved, however even more about sharing in the excitement of what is to come. The Grad Class of 2020 has worked hard to become the leaders of tomorrow. In these unusual times, the Grad Class of 2020 has shown remarkable patience and resilience, two traits that will serve them well in the future. As you view the pictures of these graduates, understand they have faced unique challenges, overcome many obstacles, and learned what it will take to succeed and lead in the 21st century.

It is my hope that the Grads of 2020 will move forward with intention, an intention to fulfill their dreams and make a difference in the world. As you continue on your life path, please remember that there is always room for kindness, craftsmanship, determination, and creativity.
