WELCOME to Fernie

T

he popular saying around Fernie is that people come for the winter and stay for the summer! It doesn’t take long for our famous snow to melt, and before you know it people are pedaling their bikes around town in shorts and sunglasses. With so many amazing activities just outside your door, the only problem you might have is choosing which part of Fernie you want to explore each day. The sun is almost always shining in our little mountain town, so pack the sunscreen and a hat, and head outside to experience the great outdoors. Enjoy a long hike, a round of golf, a bike ride, or a cold drink on a patio. Head up to Fernie Alpine Resort for mountain biking, ziplining, or a walk in the trees in the aerial park. With the Elk River passing through Fernie, why not spend a sunny afternoon enjoying its cool and clear waters? Arguably the best dry

fly-fishing in BC, book yourself in for a tour and have a guide show you the basics and best spots. Or, if you’re a seasoned pro, throw your waders on and head on in, the water’s fine! Adrenaline junkies can get their fix with whitewater rafting and kayaking, or for those who prefer to go at a slower pace, take a leisurely float down the river and take in the spectacular views. For relaxed family fun, pack a picnic and head to peaceful Annex Park, or find your way to our historic downtown and check out the shops and restaurants. Still looking for activities? Visit one of the nearby lakes, find a different viewpoint during a horseback adventure, or take a stroll along one of our many trails. Discover Fernie this summer. The possibilities are endless and the days are long, sunny, and warm!

Trail Picks

Here are Fer nie Bike Guide’s recommendations for beginner, intermediate and advanced rides. Support the Fer nie Trails Alliance by buying one of their maps to guide you. BEGINNER 1. There are two easy

rides that start and end near coffee and chocolate (or beer and nachos). To get to the first, Old Stumpy, head North on the section of TransCanada Trail that follows the river through Fernie. Cross the train tracks. Stay to the right. A short climb and you’ll be rewarded by the sight and sound of a few small creek crossings. The trail winds along the side of a ridge and brings you nicely back to the centre of town.

Rooted” to “Up Rooted” up to “Hyper Ventilation”. Pause and breathe. Then, smile and point your bike down “Hyper Extension”.

6.

Or, warm up with a spin up “Dem Bones” and “Mushroom Head” to get ready for “Lactic Ridge”. From there take “Moc Assassin” and “Stupid Traverse”, “Slunt” to “Brokeback Ridge”. A tough, steady climb followed by the most fun down in town!

2.

The Coal Heritage Trail is an out-andback ride that follows an old railway line to the now-vanished mines of Coal Creek. It starts at the Fernie Aquatic Centre, crosses over old coke ovens and ends at what was once Coal Creek’s football field. This is a good ride for families or groups with a mix of abilities. It is always fun to spin your wheels!

INTERMEDIATE 3. One good Ridgemont option is up

“Cemetery Bypass” to “Eco-Terrorist”. Cross the road to “Kids Stuff”, ride to “R-Trail.” Next, go down “Dead Fall” to “Oh Dear.” This is a good mix of technical ups and downs with some sections that really flow.

4. Or, on the other side of the Elk Valley, start up “Dem Bones”, continue up “Mushroom Head”. Then, head down “Phat Bastard”. A nice rewarding climb and fun, flowy downhill. ADVANCED 5. A classic Fernie ride: up “Lower Up Photo: Submitted

he new aerial playground and zipline tour opened last summer and features 16 elements including Ziplines, Log Driver Walks, Nitro Swings, Shrinking Islands, Cargo Nets and more fun, nearly 20 metres off the ground in the trees. The Fernie Aerial Playground and Rippin’ Zipline has proved popular with all ages. Ziplining gives the sensation of flying high above the mountain. Strap into a secure and comfortable harness and traverse from tree to tree, propelled by gravity and zooming up to 80 km per hour. Safety is a top priority at Fernie Alpine Resort. Guests receive a hands on tutorial before being sent off on their zipline or let loose to dangle in the aerial park. Every guest is paired with a buddy, who has to be told about every move you plan to make and give

you permission. The zipline is guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. The zipline experience will give you a unique perspective of Fernie Alpine Resort, combining heart-pounding thrills with amazing views of the mountains and Fernie. Zoom from tree to tree and make sure to enjoy every second of the jaw-dropping scenery. The aerial park also includes an obstacle course that gets progressively more difficult and will have guests conquering obstacles including walking across unstable tires, to gliding across guide wires on a snowboard. For those really daring, you can also try out a 60 foot freefall. The seatbelt like mechanism clicks on after 15 feet, allowing for a gentle landing on the ground. The zipline and aerial park are open seven days a week in summer. Book online at www.skifernie.com

White Water Rafting

For those who love to be on the river, but want something a little more action packed than fishing, white water rafting could be what you are looking for.

14 Summer 2013 - www.thefreepress.ca

try rafting for a wild river ride

M

ountain High Adventures offers rafting all summer long, from May to September and can cater to every age and ability, with intense full day trips battling the rapids for the more adventurous, to more relaxing scenic floats for families and those who want a calmer experience. They also offer inflatable kayaking trips for those not afraid to get wet. The rafts are big enough for groups of eight, and every raft will also have a fully qualified guide, and possibly one or two trainee guides helping out. The guide is in control at all times, and can cater the experience for each group. If the group is looking for a more exhilarating experience, the guide can arrange it. But if the group would prefer to stay in the boat and dry, the guide can do that too. It is rare for a raft to capsize – unintentionally! The raft trips are usually on the Bull River in May and June, then switch to the Elk River in July and August. But it is all very dependent on weather and the river levels. Last year heavy rainfall in spring meant the trips didn’t start until later than usual.

BiG BANG BAGELS

Prepare for a full day in the sun – lunch is provided, as well as wetsuits and other equipment. You don’t even need to be able to swim, unless you are going on a kayak trip – just make sure you let the guide know in the morning before you set off. You will be having so much fun you might forget to take a look around. Try to remember to take the time to admire the scenery as it goes by. The Bull and Elk Rivers are stunning, with the backdrop of the mountains and 400-year-old black Cottonwood trees on the banks, some of the oldest in the world. Lunch will be provided after you have worked up an appetite fighting the rapids, and before you know it the day will be over and you’ll be wondering where the time went. Give Mountain High Adventures a call and inject some adrenaline into your next trip to Fernie.

F

ollowing two years of rocking and rolling, Wapiti is celebrating its third anniversary this summer. Fernie’s very own music festival is back. On Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10, Annex Park will be transformed for two days into a live music venue, showcasing the best in fresh, new, Canadian indie music. Our little festival in the park, on the banks of the Elk River, and at the foot of Mount Fernie, is made for people that love the outdoors and music. Another word for Elk, Wapiti seems a fitting name for a home-grown festival created by, and

for, the Elk Valley community. The festival kicks off Friday evening and will continue to rock out all day Saturday and into the night. With a diverse lineup of bands playing almost every genre you can imagine, there’s something for everyone. Wapiti is family-friendly, so feel free to bring the kids along, and don’t forget your sunscreen, blankets, and lawn-chairs. Join us in Fernie this summer for Wapiti - rock out beside your best buds, dance with your neighbours, and make some new friends!

Dog Days of summer F

ernie loves dogs. The town has nearly as many furry friends as people and it’s not surprising when you stop and take a look around. With incredible mountain trails, riverside walks and city parks on the doorstep, there is nowhere more exciting for a dog to explore. Here are five of our favourites.

1

BEST FOREST HIKE Old Growth Trail

This trail begins approximately 3 kms up the Island Lake Lodge road and finishes at the lodge. It is an easy, mostly flat, walk through a beautiful valley, taking less than an hour. Look for the stunning old growth cedar trees and the great views of the Lizard Range. Leashes are advised.

2

BEST HOT DAY WALK Fernie Provincial Park

Just outside the city, this network of trails offers shady forest, creeks and rivers, and stunning viewpoints. Most trails connect to make loops and you can go for as long or as short a walk as you want. There are lots of hills, making it great exercise for you and your dog with lots of water for dogs to cool off in. Beware of bikers and wildlife.

3

BEST FETCH SPOT Ridgemont Trails

Beautiful, peaceful trails right from the middle of town. The area can be accessed from a trail beside the cemetery entrance. Part way up the trail there is a great open area for playing fetch with your dog . It is best hiked early morning as it can be hot in the summer and pretty busy with bikers.

32 Summer 2013 - www.thefreepress.ca

4

BEST IN TOWN WALK Maiden Lake/Great Northern Trail

The Great Northern trail winds through mixed forest and follows the Elk River for your dog to cool off in. It is a flat town trail and easily accessed from Maiden Lake, another doggie favourite. It can also be linked with the Emily Brydon Trail that meanders beside the river and through the Annex Park.

5

BEST OUT OF TOWN WALK Fairy Creek Trail

A bit more challenging than the others, this trail can go as far as 12 km if you have the energy. Otherwise, just go as far as you like and enjoy a break from the heat of summer. The trail is mostly shady with a side section leading to the river and a small waterfall. Bear sightings are common so keep a leash at hand. The trail begins at the Information Centre just east of town.

ake yourself back 100 years in time and spend an afternoon absorbed in Fernie’s rich history. Use the Fernie and District Historical Society’s Heritage Walking Tour booklet to guide your visit. Booklets are for sale ($5) at the Fernie Museum, on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street. Here is a sample of the interesting stories and photos that you will find inside.

Fe r n ie’s G reat F i re o f 1908

F

uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only thirty six buildings survived the blaze yet through quick thinking, bold actions and some good luck, fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke

ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over thirty miles of forest in the Elk Valley. A relief kitchen and tent city quickly appeared on the grounds of the coal company’s office. Donations, supplies, building materials and builders poured in from all over North America. Within hours, citizens and businesses were setting up tents and erecting temporary wooden structures. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. Temporary wooden structures were allowed, but all permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity.

A bl a st f rom th e past History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. Island Lake

celebr at ing 25 ye a rs

elebrating 25 years this year, Island Lake Cat-skiing has been both a pioneer and benchmark in the cat-ski game since 1988. The world famous resort, just outside Fernie, started out as a pretty basic operation, with just one lodge. Island Lake was one of the first cat-ski operations in North America, accommodating only about a dozen guests. Now, 25 years later, Island Lake has expanded from its basic Bear lodge to include three more: the Red Eagle, Cedar, and Tamarack

lodges. It can now accommodate 36 guests – three cats of 12. But don’t forget about the summer. The 7,000 acres of pristine wilderness at Island Lake provides countless hiking opportunities. Whether you are interested in a 30-minute walk or a full day hike, Island Lake has stunning views and walks for all abilities. Plus, you can stop at the resort’s restaurant and enjoy an al fresco lunch. For more information call 1-888-422-8754. Summer 2013 - www.thefreepress.ca

Mine Tours

Did you know that the beautiful Elk Valley is one of British Columbia’s most important industrial areas, home to five coal mines that produce 80% of Canada’s steelmaking coal?

40 Summer 2013 - www.thefreepress.ca

E

very July and August, Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and Elkford Visitor Centre run bus tours of Teck Coal’s open pit coal mines, which are all within one hour’s drive of Fernie. Buses stop at specially-placed lookout areas so you can safely get out of the bus to watch giant mechanical shovels clear waste rock away from the coal seams that run diagonally across the mountain. The coal is carried by house-sized haul trucks to the processing plant, where it is sorted, washed and dried before being loaded onto the CP Rail train and transported through BC to be shipped around the world to make steel. On the tour you’ll also see the maintenance shop that helps to keep the equipment in good working order, including stacks of large truck tires that cost over $40,000 each! Look out on the access roads to the operations – hundreds of elk, deer and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep live on the mine properties. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable mining and was named one of Canada’s most sustainable companies in 2012. On the tour you will also visit areas where mined land is being reclaimed and replanted with native species, and find out about the company’s water quality management plans.

Dirt Biking & Quading For those that prefer not to explore the beautiful surroundings on foot, dirt bikes and quads provide a great solution. A lot of the backcountry is easily accessible on two or four wheels and the trails in the Coal Creek area have become very popular. This diverse network, located immediately to the west of Fernie, offers a great range of intermediate and expert rides. Access to the main road is off Coal Creek Road, bringing you into the heart of the network. The rides can be linked together in a multitude of ways. The upper trails climb high above the valley and offer great views to the west. One trail worth investigating is the one leading up to the old mine. The power line on the east side of Fernie, close to Hosmer, is another great ride. South of Fernie, the South Country offers a flatter choice of trails and is really popular. Make sure you grab a map, water and food before you head out and then see what the day brings you. For info stop by and talk to the staff at Ghostrider Motorsports, 30 Shadow Road, Fernie

he Free Press is one of the oldest business in Fernie. Almost as soon as people were settling in the area and starting to build the town, they wanted a community newspaper to spread the local news, events and everything else

that was happening, and so, out of a tent, The Free Press was born. In August 1898 Mr. G.G Henderson arrived in Fernie. office. It was in this shack that all the equipment was unpacked, the cases were laid and the first type set for The Free Press. It was also home to the editor and his family for quite a few weeks, in the dead of winter, as hotel accommodation was hard to come by in the early days of Fernie.

operation but no station or freight shed had been built. When all the materials and equipment he had ordered finally arrived, it was thrown out of the train and dumped into two feet of snow. The first home of The Free Press was in a 12 foot x 12 foot rough board shack, in the rear of the present
