WELCOME I

to Fernie

f you love winter, Fernie is the place to be with an average annual snowfall of 40 feet. Winter is the time to embrace the cold, bundle up and take part in a variety of activities, from skiing, snowmobiling, skating, hockey, snowshoeing, ice fishing and so much more. It’s also a time to take in all of the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. Nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains, everywhere you look, magnificent mountains stand tall around the valley. We ski on them, hike them in snowshoes and snowmobile on them. We use them as a majestic backdrop for our photographs and we just generally enjoy their beauty. Aside from being a world-renowned ski town, we are also known for our coal mining industry. Before we became a ski destination, we were once just a small coal mining town with a pretty cool ski hill. Now people come here from all over the world, they come for the snow and stay for the lifestyle. But Fernie is more than just snow. For a taste of its rich heritage just check out the historic downtown with all of its specialty shops, from clothing to cheese to the latest best sellers and chocolate, there is something for everyone. Don’t forget to drop into the museum and library to learn more about Fernie’s history.

what makes

FERNIE GREAT

Fer nie is full of charisma. The town, with all of its history and legends, has a uniqueness all its own. Complimented by a charming group of locals, the town captivates visitors and keeps them coming back for more. From the bartender at one of the local taver ns to our very own city council, the town and its people are larger than life. The Winter

Every season in Fernie brings with it its own beauty and activities, but winter is when Fernie really comes to life. With an influx of travellers from all around the world here to experience the legendary powder, visitors and locals alike await the annual 40 feet of snowfall that Fernie is famous for. With so many winter activities available out your front door or just a few minutes from town, there is something to suit everyone.

Whether they are long-time locals or just new to Fer nie, the people that choose to live here do so for the lifestyle. The lifestyle

It doesn’t take long for our winter guests to catch on to the local quirks, such as Fernie time and the 20 centimetre rule. It’s rare to find a town where its residents are so dedicated to recreating in the snow. During winter storm cycles, it is common to find businesses closed for the day because of the famous 20 centimetre rule. Work is important, but it takes a back seat to a 20 centimetre day. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, it doesn’t matter, as long as you are out playing in the snow.

Legends

You might have noticed that Fernie locals love a good story. Whether it’s an explanation for our awesome 40 feet of average annual snowfall or an eerie shadow that appears on the side of a mountain, Fernie has some legends that have become common knowledge in the town. The Three Sisters Faced with a choice of three beautiful maidens

to make his bride, a young Indian Chief was finding it difficult to come to a decision. The older Chiefs turned to the gods to help him, unaware that such indecision was considered a terrible sin. The young Chief’s punishment was to be turned into a mountain so that every day he would be forced to look at what he couldn’t have. The maidens were so grief-stricken that they prayed to be turned into mountains as well, to which the gods obliged. Today, as you gaze upon the Three Sisters and Proctor Mountain, it is the young maidens and the Chief that you see. The Griz Have you ever wondered why Fernie is lucky enough to get such great snow? According to legend, locals and visitors can pay tribute to a massive mountain man who lives high above the ski village. You can read all about the Griz and the annual festival that honours him on page 18.

Every year, the valley shows its appreciation and admiration for their hero, Griz, through a weekend festival of parades, parties and powder!

Fernie’s Winter Festival Griz Days

F

ernie is known for the copious amounts of powder that blanket the mountains every winter, but the town hasn’t always been a winter wonderland. Locals and visitors have the legendary, mythical creature known as the ‘Griz’ to thank for Fernie’s incredible winters, and to show their appreciation, every year, hundreds gather at the base of the mountain for the infamous Griz Days. From racing reindeer down the slopes to live music and fireworks, the annual Griz Days has something for the entire community. So when you’re here in Fernie for a powdery

winter, don’t forget to stop by and thank the man who made it all possible! Legend of the Griz: As the legend goes a baby boy was born in 1879 during a wicked, bitter winter. The young lad was sheltered from the elements in a grizzly bear’s cave high up in the mountains. But he wasn’t sheltered from the angry bear, who awoke after a long sleep, hungry for meat. It is said that a battle ensued between bear and man. The next morning, when the town people awoke, they went looking to see where the boisterous noise the night before came from.

Photos: Tamara Hynd

One man glanced up at the snow valley mountain and saw a little boy leaping from rock to rock, wearing a furry bear coat and hat. His friend, of course, mistook his words for lies, accusing him of seeing things. But, just recently a couple of avid skitourers were ascending the snowy peaks during a heavy snow storm, when they spotted a man, covered in bear fur. The man they saw is said to be 300 lbs with 6-foot wide shoulders, holding an 8-foot long musket. He wore a bristly grizzly coat and a bear hat pulled down over his eyes. As the skiers starred in awe, the man shot his giant musket into the clouds, covering the mountains in powder. Now, the townspeople gather every year to show their appreciation for the Griz, who made Fernie’s mountains the best place to ski in the West.

Extreme Griz: The person crowned Extreme Griz embodies all of the values of a true mountain man or woman, a true ‘Griz.’ Each year, participants proudly wear their furry beards and grizzly coats, competing for the

title by throwing axes and starting fires. The winner is crowned after the downtown parade.

The Raging Elk Dummy Downhill:

Ever wonder what happens to a reindeer mannequin when you send it racing down a steep slope, with the aim of having your furry friend fly through the air like Rudolf? Well they typically crash, but that doesn’t stop innovative engineers from designing unique mannequins to send gliding down the ski hill during the dummy downhill competition.

Mission Statement

The Fernie Nordic Society’s current membership has reached approximately 400, including 80 kids that are involved in nordic ski lessons. It is a non-profit organization, The society aims to provide high quality and affordable winter recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The Fernie Nordic Society also strives to provide facilities and programs to encourage healthy lifestyles and appreciation of the winter environment in the Elk Valley.

Why dogs aren’t allowed on trails

We understand that many members love to cross-country ski with their four legged family members and we strive to include them where it is appropriate. The dike trail located behind the Golf Course and Island Lake Lodge are excellent dog friendly options. These areas are groomed when possible. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at the Golf Course, the main reason for this is that compaction of snow outside the groomed trails (specifically on greens) and the unavoidable dog waste issue can severely ruin the course, even under the snow. Please respect this to ensure our ongoing positive relationship with the Fernie Golf & Country Club.

With improvements in technology, catskiing now rivals heli-skiing in terms of both the quality and quantity of skiing it provides. For the experience of a lifetime call Island Lake Lodge or Fernie Wilderness Adventures.

ernie Wilderness Adventures (FWA) Snow Catskiing was established in 1986 with one goal in mind; to provide their clients an exceptional outdoor experience in a relaxed, casual atmosphere, while enjoying the snow of the Canadian Rockies. Situated in the mountains just southwest of town, FWA has over 3,000 acres of terrain to begin your descent. FWA catskiing can be enjoyed by both powder veterans and first time backcountry skiers/snowboarders. Terrain is predominately glade tree skiing with occasional tree bands leading into open

chutes suitable for advanced intermediate to advanced skiers or boarders. There is a lead guide who navigates the line down the mountain, and a tail guide who points out the best lines and ensures that the group descends safely. Depending on the group and conditions of the day, you can expect to get eight-10 runs, which is approximately 10,000-12,000 metres of vertical drops for the day. Skiable terrain is dependent upon current weather conditions, group ability and safety. As with any climate controlled activity, some alterations to daily plans may be necessary to provide the safest experience possible for that day’s conditions.

locations around Fernie. The map has numbers correlating with signs along the trail to help navigate your way. “It is really easy to follow the trail and there are also some great places to stop off and enjoy the scenery,” said Kramer. “Firewood and a barbecue are provided at both locations for your enjoyment. The not-for-profit FSA has fun events throughout the winter to get people involved, such as the poker run and drag races during the annual Griz Days festivities, raising money for charitable causes. They also try to host monthly family oriented events.” Ghostrider Motorsports has FSA memberships on hand that can be purchased Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Membership fees, trail conditions, FSA events and a grooming schedule can all be found at www.ferniesnowmobile.com. Backcountry Touring Fernie is surrounded by boundless backcountry, and if you know how to get around, checking out the backcountry is extremely rewarding. There are many hikes, routes, bowls and even cabins to check out, but you have to be careful, the avalanche threat in the Elk Valley is very real. If you don’t know how to negotiate the avalanche danger, stay inbounds until you receive some education and learn about avalanche hazards and backcountry safety. Telemark Skiing Telemark skiing or “free heel skiing is a versatile downhill skiing style that allows the freedom to ski both at the resort and in the backcountry. Unlike downhill skiing equipment, the skis used for telemarking use bindings where the boot is attached only at the toe (similar to cross-country skis), allowing the heel to come up from the ski. Free heels allow for easy climbing and open possibilities for efficient touring. Looking to try something new? It may not be the easiest way down the mountain, but it sure can be fun! The possibilities are endless for your telemark adventure in Fernie. For information contact Fernie Alpine Resort, Fernie Wilderness Adventure or Island Lake Lodge.

Hot Dog Day

Hot Dog Day is one of Fernie’s best-kept and most unique traditions. Held at Fernie Alpine Resort it is a yearly party filled with brews, dogs and fantastically cheesy 80s retro gear. In between filling up on hot dogs and hops, be sure to hit up one of Fernie’s remarkable trails. It’s always a memorable time.

Fernie Brewing Company Tours:

Beer crafted for a wild life. This local brewery began in a barn a decade ago by long-time Fernie residents the Pask family. Since then, Fernie Brewing Co. has flourished and grown, becoming an integral part of most nights out in Fernie. To take a look behind the scenes of this local operation and to see kernels getting cracked and hops being added to create all of Fernie’s distinctive beer flavours, Fernie Brewing Co. offers tours of the facility. With flavours like local organic honey in Kickstand Honey Kolsch, the elusive huckleberry native to the Rocky Mountains in What The Huck and a ubiquitously Canadian maple syrup flavour, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste. ith the slopes getting above 40 feet of snow, it’s no wonder National Geographic voted Fernie as the second best ski town in the world last season. And you can find all that powder just five minutes outside of town, giving visitors the luxury of booking accommodations in town or choosing from a variety of ski in/ski out resorts at the ski hill base. From beginners to experts, there’s an abundance of options ranging from downhill skiing and boarding at Fernie Alpine Resort (www.skifernie.com), to catskiing with Island Lake Lodge (www.islandlakecatskiing.com) and Fernie Wilderness Adventures (www.fernieadventures.com). Fernie Alpine Resort caters to powder enthusiasts, with 10 lifts, five alpine bowls,

142 named runs, defined glades and a 3,550 foot vertical drop that leaves even the most advanced skiers sitting on the edge of their chair lift seat. Stunning views are also a huge part of the package. Head to the top of the Polar Peak lift and fix your eyes on the spectacular Lizard Range to the north, or head up the Timber Bowl and grab a hot chocolate at the Lost Boys Café, while taking in the beauty of the mountain bowls and the town of Fernie. Then head back out for some seriously fun skiing, and don’t worry about getting lost in the snow, Fernie has safety avalanche dogs and a professional ski patrol to keep you safe in the powder. But people in Fernie will tell you that it’s not just the powder that keeps them coming back; it’s the combined love of the people, the passion and the powder that turns visitors into locals.

Winter Wheezer A winter race that truly captures what Fer nie is all about: beautiful views, cruising through fresh snow followed by a rewarding evening by a fire after a long day soaking up the great outdoors. The Winter Wheezer welcomes participants across the province and beyond to stride through the snow on snowshoes and sweep the hills on cross-country skis. Skiers can take advantage of the race’s Nordic centre trails, perfect for classic racers. The snowshoe route twists through the trees before opening up to stunning views. The Wheezer caters to all outdoor enthusiasts, from hardcore local skiers to families just looking to enjoy the powdery slopes. Even B.C.’s youngest athletes are Photo Credit: Raven Eye Photography invited to enjoy the slopes, with different course-lengths catered to youth skiers and snowshoers. It’s truly a winter event that encourages fun for everyone, with most participants skiing or snowshoeing through the course as part of a team comprised of all ages and abilities. That sense of cheerful unity is mimicked during the post-race fire, where participants get toasty by the ski hill base after a fun-filled day on the slopes.

eading out to play in the snow? Don’t miss out because your vehicle was parked improperly! From November 1 to April 15 inclusive, the following winter parking regulations are in effect per Consolidated Streets and Traffic Bylaw #1400:

Alternate Parking

Alternate parking allows the plows to clear back snow to the boulevards on alternating days and continue snow removal operations after a snowfall. Remember both sides of the street will of course be plowed, and unfortunately cars parked on the street will be plowed in. Plowing operations generally start at 4:00 am and run until 4:00 pm so please be sure you are parked on the correct side of the street during these hours. Ensure your vehicle is parked correctly and avoid being towed! • NO parking permitted on Monday,

Powder Pedal Paddle Thought relays were reserved for only the warmest months of the year? Not in this active community! To tie up the winter season, Fernie Alpine Resort hosts their powder pedal paddle relay every April, where teams of two to five people ski, bike, paddle and run their way into Spring followed by a delicious dinner and an after party in the evening. This extreme community event sees team members racing from the top of the mountain on skis and snowboards, speeding down the ski hill on a bike and ferociously pedaling into town, paddling a canoe or kayak up the bitterly cold Elk River toward the Fernie Alpine Resort access road and finally, dashing up the road to the finish line. Participants gather at the ski hill base at the end of the race for a barbeque and prizes. Weren’t fast enough to place? Not to worry, sometimes slow and steady does truly win the race! Prizes and bragging rights go out to all sorts of different humorous categories, including slowest and youngest.

Snowshoeing Fernie is renowned for its extraordinary amounts of champagne powder and enchanting scenery. If snowshoeing through deep drifts of snow is your idea of bliss, you have come to the right place.

Ever wonder what happens to Fer nie’s wealth of trails when the snow falls? Do they just sit there vacant all winter? No way!

L

ocals and visitors strap on their snowshoes and hit the trails even on the snowiest days. A popular activity during Fernie’s winters, snowshoeing it’s not only inexpensive, it’s a great way to get together with friends and family for a day of fun-filled exercise. The hobby burns three times more calories than walking, and is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health. And with Fernie’s extensive trail network, you’ll never run out of places to explore. Grab your snowshoes and head up to Island Lake Lodge for a hike around the lake, or hit up Fernie Alpine Resort, Mount Fernie or

even Mount Hosmer for spectacular winter wonderland views. Just remember, with all of B.C.’s beautiful but dangerous terrain, it’s important to remember to bring a map and compass, and let someone know before you go out by yourself. And if you don’t want to head out to the trails by yourself, there’s always the option of local guided tours. So pack a lunch and a Fernie Trails Guide and soak up all the amazing scenery Fernie has to offer. For those who don’t have there own shoes, rentals are available at the ski and board shops around town and at Fernie Alpine Resort.

fer nie tourism

S

ince 2007, Fernie Tourism has been in charge of promoting everything Fernie has to offer to a wide array of markets across the country and internationally. With so much going on year-round and everything packaged into a stunning environment like Fernie, it makes it easy to convince people to visit. Fernie Tourism proudly notes that everything about Fernie is authentic, historic and worth visiting. Fernie is not a town that was originally built with the intention of becoming a tourist resort town such as Whistler or Banff; it’s simply a beautiful place that manages to retain all the sights and charm that makes it a great city to visit. Features like the Historic Downtown inlaid with charming brickwork, mining history, the Legend of the Ghostrider and the tragic fires, show how the city has rebuilt itself to attract and allure visitors to learn more about the town and its history. In the wintertime, Fernie overflows with an abundance of activities to choose from.

Snowfall from December to March gives visitors and locals a great ski and snowboard season to take advantage of. January trips following the Christmas rush and March rides down the mountain when days are longer provide locals and visitors with great opportunities to hit the snow. Fernie Tourism also highlights all of the different types of skiing that the city can offer, including downhill, cross-country, Nordic and cat. For any skier or snowboarder, Fernie cat-skiing is a ‘must’ winter activity that allows for more access to steep, ambitious backcountry terrain. Snowshoeing through pristine snow-covered trails assisted by a knowledgeable guide or even ice skating on frozen ponds are both can’t-miss winter activities. Fernie Tourism works with all aspects of Fernie businesses including the museum, the Chamber of Commerce, hotels and the City of Fernie itself to market the city as an amazing place to be.

fer nie chamber of commerce

I

t can often be challenging to start up a local business in a small community like Fernie, but the Chamber of Commerce is here to help. By this year, 270 Fernie businesses have joined up with the Chamber of Commerce, becoming active members of the flourishing business community. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce itself is part of the wider body of both the provincial and national-level Chambers of Commerce. Its job is to promote and encourage the city’s thriving business sector. Local businesses that want to grow and develop, or businesses that simply want to be part of a bigger body that encourages the maturation and expansion of the Fernie economy, pledge their support through their membership. Trust, quality and leadership are key slogans within the Fernie Chamber of Commerce memberships. Members are rewarded for being part of the

Chamber of Commerce through a variety of benefit programs, including discount pricing on gas and hotels. And the Chamber works hard at supporting the development of both new and existing businesses in the Fernie area. This winter, the Chamber of Commerce will again be working day and night to get ready for the annual Griz Days celebration. As event organizers, the Fernie Chamber prepares for the end of February, beginning of March weekend, where the town hosts an elaborate winter wonderland parade, a dummy downhill race and fireworks, to name a few of the weekend’s endless activities. Stick around for the summer, when the Fernie Chamber of Commerce hosts its Wednesday and Sunday summer socials, where locals and visitors alike litter the streets with live music, hola hooping, car shows, yoga challenges and many other fun-filled activities.

A b l a s t from th e p ast History of coal mining in the Elk Valley More than 100 years ago, “black gold” was discovered by European settlers in the Elk Valley. When William Fernie (Fernie’s namesake), and his colleagues succeeded in getting a railway started in the late 1800s to access the area, the region boomed. Workers from all over the world flocked here, with hopes of finding a better life. They worked the mines at places like Coal Creek, Michel and Natal. Although these sites are now long abandoned, the remnants are still visible today. Coal provided the foundation for this area’s economy and society, and helped foster a truly unique local culture. F

uelled by hot dry winds, one of Western Canada’s most devastating fires took only 90 minutes to destroy the whole of Fernie, a city of 4,000. Only 36 buildings survived, but thankfully fewer than 20 people died. Fleeing residents found refuge in the coal company office, clearings along the railway tracks and in the Elk River. Trains overflowing with terrified passengers charged through the flames, allowing people to escape to Cranbrook, the unused coke ovens in Hosmer and a rocky clearing along the

Elk River. By the end of the day the fire had consumed Fernie and over 30 miles of forest in the Elk Valley. The longest lasting legacy of the 1908 fire is the building rules that were subsequently adopted. All permanent buildings in the business centre were to be constructed of stone, brick or concrete. The buildings erected in the years after the great fire of 1908 stand as a testament to Fernie’s determination to carry on and grow stronger in the face of adversity.

T

he Fernie Museum and Information Centre provides visitors and locals alike with the opportunity to delve into the heritage and history of Fernie through various themed displays and exhibits. The location of the museum itself on historical Victoria Avenue and Cox Street (491-2nd Avenue) is enough to drive street traffic into its hallowed halls. At the hands of new curator Ron Ulrich, who took over for longtime director Mike Pennock, bringing with him 30 years of museum experience, the Fernie Museum has continued to flourish and provide visitors with a wealth of information on the city. The Fernie Museum was pleased to welcome Ulrich into their fold, as he has a strong history working in community museums, beginning his museum career at just 14 years old and working his way up to being involved with the start up the Crowsnest Museum in 1983. As a fourth-generation Crowsnest Pass/Elk Valley native, for Ulrich, coming to work at the Fernie Museum was like coming home. His deep connection to Fernie and new experiences at the museum’s helm has provided Ulrich with a refreshing perspective and the ability to highlight the past in modern, inspiring ways. Photos: Courtesy of the Fernie and District Historical Society

Sensory experiences that connect you to Fernie’s wildlife are a great museum feature. The wildlife exhibit includes touchable animal tracks and smells distinctive to the wilderness and forests. Local lore, like the legend of the Ghostrider, gives you a peek into the history of the city and information is given a fun twist for kids at a train table and crawl tunnel, complete with dinosaur tracks. See town founder Williams Fernie’s handwritten letters dating back to 1880. These letters provide visitors with the ability to travel back in time as they pore over detailed descriptions that depict real pioneer life. Slowly pry open a heavy vault door — an original from a bank safe — to access an elevator that takes you upstairs. This second storey houses a gallery with varying exhibits throughout the seasons. If you’re ever curious for knowledge and want to know more about what makes Fernie the place that it is, the Fernie Museum and Info Centre is the place to visit for immersive facts and fun.
