WELCOME to Fernie

xcitement is in the air as we look forward to celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday this July 1 and although winter did not disappoint, we are ready for sunshine, warm weather and all of the wonderful things that come along with a Fernie summer. As spring turns into summer, bikers and hikers are busy traversing the immense trail systems in and around Fernie. Come June anglers will be out and about on the Elk River catching their first fish of the season. July, race season begins. From the Scott Thursday Night Race Series to the Fernie Half Marathon in October, the summer is full of different races to suit everyone. In the pages that follow, you will find all the information you need to guide you through a summer in Fernie and you can pick up a copy of The Free Press every Thursday and check out page 8, Around the Valley, for up-to-date concert listings, art openings and library events. We hope you enjoy summer here as much as we do and if you are looking for reasons to come back for a spectacular Fernie winter check out pages 52 and 53.

Canada 150: a tale of Confederation Canadian confederation proves that wonderful things can have unexciting beginnings.

T

here was no bloody revolution at the birth of the country. There was no new political ideology but there was some burning nationalism and a group of people with a vision. The reasons for Canadian independence are entirely, almost infuriatingly, practical. In the 1860s, British North America was made up of scattered colonies. There was New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. There were small European settlements in the Maritimes, on the Great Lakes, in the Saint Lawrence River Valley and on the West Coast. But other than that, Canada was a vast and sparsely populated place, dominated by furtraders, Metis and First Nations. The Hudson’s Bay Company still owned huge swaths of the continent. The small British colonies were facing problems. They each had a separate government but were subject to the overriding political authority of Britain. In order for their economies to do well, the colonies needed to be able to sell their goods and they were looking for other markets. Then there were the unfriendly Americans who had fought the British to gain their independence almost a century earlier and

8

Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

were in the process of fighting a bloody civil war. Some Canadian politicians believed the North might help itself to British holdings above the 49th parallel to make up for lost territory below the Mason-Dixon line if it lost. Relations between the two countries were therefore rocky but the British were reluctantly paying for Canada’s defence budget and were eager to offload the expense. There was also a desire for a trans-continental railway system to facilitate the transportation of goods and people across the vast land. To solve some of these problems, it was decided the colonies should come together to form one country. The four provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united into the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. In the years since Confederation, Canada has seen numerous territorial changes and expansions. British Columbia entered Confederation as the sixth province, on July 20, 1871. Fast-forward 150-years and Canada is celebrating a monumental birthday. It is one of the most prosperous and free countries in the world and one of the most beautiful towns in this beautiful country happens to be Fernie; a true diamond of a community nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Tec k – behi n d t h e s e a ms Take the opportunity to discover more about mining on a mine tour this summer.

D

id you know that the beautiful Elk Valley is one of British Columbia’s most important industrial areas, home to five coal mines that produce 80 per cent of Canada’s steelmaking coal? Every July and August the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and Elkford Visitor Centre run bus tours of Teck’s open pit steelmaking coal mines, which are all within an hour drive of Fernie. Buses stop at specially-placed lookout areas so you can safely get out to watch giant mechanical shovels clear waste rock away from the coal seams that run diagonally across the mountain. The coal is carried by house-sized haul trucks to the processing plant, where it is sorted, washed and dried before being loaded onto the CP Rail train and transported through B.C. to be shipped around the world to make steel. On the tour you’ll also see the maintenance shop that helps to keep the equipment in good working order, including stacks of large truck tires that cost over $40,000 each. Look out on the access roads to the operations — hundreds of elk, deer and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep live on the mine properties. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable mining and has received a range of recognition from organizations for work in this area. On the tour you will also visit areas where mined land

is being reclaimed and replanted with native species, and find out about the company’s water management work.

Fernie internationally recognized for its dry-fly fishing

I

n the winter Fernie is a ski-town, but when the snow melts and water flows through the region’s rivers and streams, the anglers drawn to the Elk Valley’s spectacular dry-fly fishery turn it into a trout-town. Fly-fishing is a fun activity that will have you out by the river and enjoying the sights and gentle murmurings of a babbling brook. There’s also a reasonably good chance that you catch a big one. You won’t need to go far to get the chance of landing a wild, native westslope cutthroat trout, a very large bull trout or maybe a mountain whitefish. Literally within walking distance of downtown Fernie is the Elk River. It begins at Elk Lakes and flows for 180 kilometres before entering Lake Koocanusa. Along the way, it is fed by over 30 tributaries.

10 Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

If lake fishing is more your style, there are also plenty of lakes and ponds in the area where anglers will mainly find largemouth bass and rainbow trout. The South Country has many small lakes. Larger systems such as the Kootenay River and smaller rivers like the Wigwam provide additional opportunities for fishermen of every kind. Guides can be a great people to bring on your fishing adventure. They can be helpful for finding a good spot and have extensive knowledge of local flies. No matter your plans, be sure to get your provincial fishing license as well as a classified waters license specific to the Kootenays.

Folklore – The Legend of the Ghostrider During the summer evenings in Fer nie, when the light hits Mt. Hosmer a certain way, a legend can sometimes be seen on the face of the mountain.

T

photos: Nick Nault & Henry Georgi

he Ghostrider – the shadow of what looks like a horse and a rider, is believed to be the shadow of an angry Ktunaxa Indian Chief and his jilted princess daughter chasing after William Fernie. As legend has it, William Fernie (1837-1921), a Scottish prospector who founded the city, was courting the Indian Princess as a way to find out the source of the black stone she wore around her neck. Being a prospector, he recognized the stone to be coal. The Indian Chief agreed to reveal the location of the coal if Fernie agreed to marry his daughter. It is said that after the Chief shared the location of the coal, Fernie reneged on the deal, and as a result, a curse was placed on the Elk Valley.

The curse, so it goes, would bring fire, flood and famine to the city. As luck would have it, the city burned nearly to the ground twice. The first fire came in 1904 then again in 1908. In 1916, the Elk River overflowed and flooded sections of the city, and in 1917 there was a mining disaster. The curse remained in place until Aug. 5, 1964, when members of the Kootenay First Nations gathered in the city for a ceremonial lifting of the curse. It was at that time that Chief Red Eagle and Mayor James White amended past wrongs by smoking a peace pipe, and the curse was lifted. On a warm summer evening if you look up at Mt. Hosmer, you will see the Indian Chief, his horse and his daughter.

Fernie’s EcoGarden common green space

F

ernie is home to a local ‘garden of eden’, known as the Wildsight Community EcoGarden. This has provided locals with a means to grow locally, become educated on sustainable organic food and work with others to build a community of healthy individuals. The EcoGarden is located behind the Tom Uphill Memorial Home, and features a native plants exhibit that anyone can view, as well as an extravagant hummingbird and butterfly garden. The project originally sprouted after taking inspiration from permaculture principles, which, in short, is the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. Dawn Deydey is the brains behind the garden, and was instrumental in its launch in 2003. The original goal was to educate others on gardening, and this continues to ring true. From the start, Deydey was especially focused

20 Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

on education in local schools, teaching children how to be self-sufficient in the production of their own food. The EcoGarden has grown to 22 garden plots, managed and maintained by their local plotholder. Since their start, they have doubled the size of their composting bins. This is largely due to the commitment of their team of volunteers. There is also a greenhouse, where plot-holders can put plants that need extra, more specific care. The garden welcomes everyone to utilize individual garden plots in the harvesting of flowers and vegetables. However, space is limited. Even if there are no plots available, there is always plenty of work to do in the garden. Locals are encouraged to come, take part, and learn from others. Those wishing to become involved can follow the EcoGarden Facebook page, or email garden.fernie@gmail.com. Photo: Community EcoGarden

Apples for all! Tools on loan

D

id you know that for the last few years Wildsight Elk Valley has operated a Tool Share and Apple Capture Program? All of these great community cooperative programs are by donation and available to anyone in the Elk Valley – registration and tool booking is quick, painless and done online at wildsight.ca/ branches/elkvalley/toolshare. Tool libraries have been around since the 1970s as a way for communities to share resources specific to a task. By providing access to tools, these libraries help to build resilient communities, empower their users, lessen neighbourhoods’ ecological footprints and help to beautify areas. The Wildsight Elk Valley Tool Share is stocked with everything you need to pick, grind, press, juice, can, smoke and dehydrate apples and other tree fruit. They host a fantastic backyard event with a gas canning/ cooking stove, recycling containers, dishes, juice, water jugs and more! They are looking to expand their offerings to include everyday items required for daily tasks and basic handy person projects, so if you have something

you would like to donate or are looking for something please do not hesitate to contact Elkvalley@wildsight.ca. The Wildsight Elk Valley Tool Share and Apple Capture Program has a specific focus on picking and preserving apples and other tree fruits. This food source is both a blessing and a curse as it is a fantastic bounty of local and nutritious food but can also serve as a wildlife attractant endangering the lives of bears and ungulates such as deer. If you are unable to harvest your tree or would prefer not to, we also have a Tree Sharing Program. This means that if you register your tree with Wildsight Elk Valley they will ensure that the fruit is harvested, removed and prepared for consumption. Once picked or prepared they stress that it is good practice to ensure that the tree owner receive some of the delicious bounty so have no fear of missing out! Wildsight’s Apple Capture and Tool Share helps you keep up with your fruit harvest or share it with someone who can use it. more great adventures

T

here is nothing quite like summer in Fernie. The season is filled with mountain bike races, river adventures, ziplining and hiking for starters and if that isn’t enough you can fill your days with golf, tennis, helicopter tours or rock-climbing. Make sure to save time to explore some of the unique features that you will only find in Fernie including the EcoGarden, Miner’s Walk and Station Square. Below are more great adventures for you to discover.

Acti v ities

Biking – see pages 30,31 Camping – see pages 70 Chairlift Ride – see page 12 Dirt biking/Quadding

Fernie is an excellent destination for mountain biking on its expansive trail system, but for motorized dirt biking a quick trip to Elko — a 20 minute drive from Fernie — will pay off with an excellent dirt bike track.

Disc Golf – see page 45 Fishing – see page 10 Golfing – see pages 16,17 Helicopter tours

To get views of the Rockies that will take your breath away, treat someone special to a helicopter tour in the mountains surrounding Fernie. Ascent Helicopters offer tours that take off from Fernie and have you soaring over the Lizard Range, Three Sisters and Elk River Valley. For more information, call 250-423-1443.

Rafting – see pages 48,49 Rock-climbing

While Fernie is not a rock-climbing destination itself, you don’t have to travel far to get a taste of it. Locals who want to scale a cliff head down to Montana’s Stone Hill, just across the U.S. border. It was actually a group of Fernie locals who first climbed at Stone Hill in the 70s, and they continue to develop lines there. The Highway of Love trek winds around the beautiful Lake Koocanusa — offering great lakeviews. Another nearby option is Lakit Lake near Cranbrook. For those wanting to give their kids a taste of climbing, take them to Fernie’s indoor rock walls in Evolution Gym or at the College of the Rockies to learn the basics.

Skateboard/Dirt Jump – see page 47

THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!

Hiking – see pages 34,35 Horseshoes

Why not take a picnic down to Annex Park and play a game of horseshoes under the shade of the trees? There is also a horseshoe pit, and bocce, at James White Park.

Committee is on a mission to keep Fernie looking beautiful

T

he Beautification Committee was formed in 2010 when Mayor Mary Giuliano, a city councillor at the time, wanted to decorate main street with hanging flowerpots. She wanted more public art and more greenery in the downtown core. The volunteer committee members come from a wide cross-section of the community. There’s Giuliano, local businesspeople Jeremiah Pauw and Sarah Deschenes, council member Jon Levesque as well as Fernie Chamber of Commerce executive director Patty Vadnais and Leisure Services Advisory Board member Jocelyn Sombrowski. The committee is responsible for making recommendations on expenditures to council for the beautification of public spaces. Some of their past efforts include the Out of the Box Art Initiative, which saw nine waste recycle bins painted and decorated by local artists during a summer festival. They were also instrumental in the decorative

winter lighting put up along the highway corridor as well as the City Gifting Program, where the group purchases and places amenities such as bike racks, picnic tables and trees in parks and along trails. Now the committee is turning its attention to Station Square. Revitalizing the square has been a topic of discussion for decades but in February, after hearing a presentation from Pauw, council agreed to create a taskforce to spearhead the redevelopment of the downtown square. The installation of new public washrooms near the square and a new deck at The Arts Station are helping to kick-start the process. When completed, Station Square could be connected into a wider system of walking trails and sidewalks to create a network for pedestrian travel downtown. In the summer it is the site of the Wednesday concert series, which has become very popular for both locals and tourists.

The Great Trail passes through the Elk Valley It will be the world’s longest network of recreational trails and one section – called the Elk Valley Community Trail – passes right through Fer nie and other Elk Valley communities thanks to the efforts of the Fer nie Trails Alliance (FTA).

T

he Great Trail stretches 24,000 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic oceans. As of November 2016 the Great Trail was about 90 per cent complete but there were still thousands of kilometres of gaps that had to be bridged to fully connect it. Organizers have given themselves until Canada’s 150th anniversary on July 1, 2017 to finish the work. Here in the Elk Valley, a number of companies have been digging away to make sure the trail is completed in time. It enters the Elk Valley at Round Prairie. From there it snakes down to Elkford where it connects to Line Creek. From there you can

28 Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

walk to the town of Sparwood, then Hosmer and then Fernie before making your way to the ghost town of Morrissey. You’ll be traveling down logging roads for some of the way. Last summer there were nine crews from seven companies working along the trail. Each crew consisted of a mini excavator and operator roughing in the trail plus one or two assistants to do chainsaw work, corridor clearing, and trail tread finishing with hand tools. Another four crews were working, installing directional signage in the spring. The work has included redesignating existing trails, building new trails and utilizing road right of ways. Photos: Terry Nelson/Fernie Trails Alliance

FTA Chair Terry Nelson said the Elk Valley Community Trail will be yet another quality recreational asset for the region that will add to the general health and well being of its users. It will also benefit the region economically as communities along its length are sure to be important places for weary hikers to stop, camp and resupply. The FTA is an umbrella organization representing a number of user groups in the valley. It was formed to maintain responsible non-motorized trail access in the Fernie area and represents mountain biking and cross country ski clubs. Initially most of the trails in and around Fernie were on private land but through its efforts, the FTA has negotiated land use agreements with all parties involved to legitimize the trails, said Nelson. Get out there and enjoy the fruits of the FTA’s efforts. There are about 320 kilometres of trail in the Fernie area alone. Intrepid hikers will be challenged with different types of terrain from scree fields to mountain meadows and then rewarded with aweinspiring views from the tops of the magnificent peaks surrounding the community.

cross-country riding on Fernie’s single track trails there is no shortage of places to ride. With regular events with the Fernie Mountain Bike Club (FMBC) such as the 2Knee Rides, to Fernie’s Dirt Diggler, the avid cyclist has more than enough events to fill their summer schedule. The Guide’s Hut Staff: Trail Favourites Choosing a favourite trail in Fer nie can be hard. All of Fer nie’s trails have something to offer for different times of day, moods, and weather, but we’ve settled on six. Support the Fer nie Trails Alliance by buying one of their maps to guide you. Jay –

Take Uprooted to Hypervent. Turn off to Castle Rocks and enjoy the view. Descend Southern Comfort to South Castle down to Cokato Road. Then take the new addition back on to the Montane Trail. It will take you back to where you started. This ride is awesome! My record is getting eight 10-year-olds to the top (not recommended for amateurs). The climb, particularly nice in mid-summer, is interesting and warms you up through raspberry-filled sunny glades before you hit the exciting and challenging switchbacks of Hypervent. The last section up to Castle Rock makes you feel like a fitness champ. Hike the last metres for an outstanding view of the Lizard Range. My favourite route off Castle is Southern Comfort primarily because it’s fast and not too “jumpy” for an old guy.

descent make it in our opinion the most bang for your buck. What to expect from the descent? You’ll have flowing banked corners around trees to bermed sections into tight switchbacks. Not only do you get to ride a sweet trail, the views of town from the bench are breathtaking.

Kim-

I like Lazy Lizard because it’s a great ride for the family to do together. The grade and construction on the trail make it rideable for almost anyone. The highlight is the downhill after a well-deserved lunch at Island Lake Lodge.

Tom-

Anything I can beat Mike Bragg on Strava on rates as my favourite trail. But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself. Whether in a group or solo enjoy these and other Fernie’ trails. You will be glad you did!

Ewan –

Project 9 is my choice because you can pick different lines each time, giving it a freeride feel. The up is quick and dirty; the down is plenty flirty!

Russ -

Brokeback is one of my all-time favourite trails because of the variety of terrain that it covers. If you’re not used to giant flowy berms, this is an amazing intro to them.

Dana –

Swine Flu is quickly accessible from town, which makes it an easy choice. The climb is a fun challenge, rising steadily with a relentless surge near the top. This combined with the

bear safety

R

unning into a black or grizzly bear while in Fernie can be a fairly common occurrence, they are our neighbours after all. It’s important to be bear aware at all times when you’re venturing out on the trails. The safest bear encounter is one prevented. Make noise to warn bears of your presence and avoid surprise encounters. Call out, clap your hands, sing or talk loudly, especially when approaching blind corners or shrubby areas. Carry bear spray, keep it accessible and know how to use it. Only rely on it as a last resort. Most human-bear encounters can be resolved without the use of bear spray, if not avoided entirely. Know your bear signs: −Scat is usually black in colour and will contain the remains of what was last eaten. Green scat is very fresh and means a bear is nearby. −Claw marks on trees or rotted stumps

wildlife

Living in Fernie means sharing our home with many different animals. The Elk Valley is well known for its abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see elk, deer, moose, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. You might even be lucky enough to come across a wolf, coyote, cougar, lynx, or bobcat. Keep an eye out when you’re hiking the trails, cooling off in the river, or when you’re just taking a leisurely stroll down Second Avenue. And summer, of course, is bear season. Black bears are spotted frequently in and around town and the Elk and Flathead Valleys have one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears. Make sure you’ve always got your camera handy, but remember to keep your distance, and don’t forget to respect the nature we’re so proud of.

and logs. −Torn up rotted logs and stumps or overturned rocks (done by a bear looking for insects). −Bear tracks (bears have five toes

and five claws). If you encounter a bear: −Remain calm, do not panic. −Do not run. Bears are predators (hunters), and running may cause a predatory response. If the bear hasn’t seen you: −Don’t attract the bear’s attention by making noise or yelling at it. −Look for a safe and quiet way of retreating while remaining aware of what the bear is doing. If the bear has seen you: −Stand your ground. −Make yourself as large as possible. −Speak to the bear, let it know that you are human. −Back away slowly and leave the area.

rom buffed trails and beautiful views to self-supported excursions, Fernie’s hiking trails are sure to impress the novice and the seasoned hiker. walkways that meander through a stunning old growth forest. The route finishes at Island Lake where users can pause for a bite to eat before the descent back. For a three to six hour hike at average difficulty, the Castle Mountain Hike will give you a different view. The most common area to hike is ‘Roots’ off of River Road. This trail reaches 5,280-feet elevation and is approximately five kilometres long depending on what route you take to access it. The hike starts at a calm grade and gradually rises throughout the route becoming more exposed. With many perfectly Photo: Mike McPhee

picturesque points along the way, often marked by benches, the hike leads to the top of Castle Mountain’s rocks. This is a multi-use route so don’t be surprised if you see mountain bikers. Due to the location of this hike it offers views of areas that many other routes don’t, making for some visually vibrant vistas. For a more advanced hike on a self-supported excursion, venture onto Heiko’s Trail. Starting at Hartley Lake Road or Island Lake Lodge, this trail has a completion time of about 10 to12 hours. This 21 kilometre trail with 4000 feet of elevation is an ideal candidate for an overnight trip. The route will take explorers through some of B.C.’s most beautiful landscapes, from caves to waterfalls and through two big mountain passes. Island Lake Lodge – Professional guides will lead you to discover places you may not have visited on your own, from alpine meadows to rugged mountain peaks. Your guide will work closely with you in choosing enjoyable and appropriate trails and tailoring the hike to your preference. Fernie Alpine Resort – Enjoy a great summer hike by exploring a variety of spectacular alpine trails, lakes and summits. Interpretive walking trails are available as either self-guided tours,

or by hiring a guide for the ultimate in local knowledge and information. A Fernie Trail Map will show you more than just the trail routes, it will also show the trail type and the activities it supports. Fernie has amazing hiking infrastructure inside of the town limits too, with many pedestrian bridges that keep trail users and highway traffic apart. The expansive trail system has something for everyone. With ranging difficulty, the one thing every trail offers is breathtakingly beautiful views.

Flavour of Fernie Finding great food in Fer nie is easy. The difficulty comes in deciding what type of food you are craving. The restaurants in Fer nie offer an array of food, often reserved for large cities. The choices for dining are plentiful, and the food is top notch!

F

rom a date night at Island Lake Lodge, with wine, appetizers and entrees to a burger and a beer at the Park Place Pub while watching your favourite team on the big screen, there are flavour profiles for the most discerning palate. You only need to go as far as the Tandoor Grill at the Stanford Resort to have a taste of India, or stop in at Nevados on 2nd Avenue to be transported to Mexico. Be sure to try their cornbread, but get there early as it sells out fast! Before taking to the trails stop in at Big Bang Bagel and try one of the many bagels on their menu. Pick up a six pack to tide you over on your ride. For a relaxed dinner over quiet conversation, there is no better place downtown than Infinitea which is tucked on the side street between Big Bang and The Royal Hotel. Steph and her crew have specials every day, and the atmosphere is relaxing and easy. If you plan on spending your day at Fernie Alpine Resort, one of the best views in the valley can be enjoyed from the deck at Lost Boys Café. Open on weekends and holiday Mondays throughout the summer, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air while overlooking the city. Downtown Fernie is iconic. Known for its historic buildings nestled in the Rocky Mountains, the frequently photographed main street is lined with outdoor patios throughout the summer, all offering fresh food and spirits. If you are looking for great food but prefer a change of scenery, the Bridge Bistro on Hwy 3 has an amazing deck overlooking the Elk River, and the wrap around deck at the Clubhouse Restaurant at Fernie Golf & Country Club offers a panoramic view of lush fairways. If a little downtime is on your agenda, ordering in may be on the menu. All of the pizza shops in town deliver their own specialty pizzas and sides, guaranteeing fresh ingredients and gluten free options.

s wedding aisles go; Fernie has some of the best there are. A helicopter ride to the top of Mount Bisaro, a walk through the woods to the I Dew Point at Island Lake Lodge, or a gondola ride to Lost Boys Café. All of these, and many more, are the reason Fernie has become a destination wedding venue. Fernie offers wedding venues for every size and budget. If you are looking to accommodate a large group, an ideal outdoor setting may be one of the City’s many parks. For an indoor ceremony in town, Best Western Fernie Mountain Lodge has full catering service in their banquet rooms that can accommodate large groups or a more intimate group as required. As unique as the venues are, the one thing they all offer is outstanding mountain scenery. The outstanding scenery is but one of the reasons to choose Fernie for your “I do’s”. If you choose to be married with the majestic Rockies towering in the background, then a good photographer is a must for your special day, and Fernie has some of the best. Their knowledge of those hidden gems, that only a local knows, can be the difference between making your photo album average or extraordinary. The wedding day is all about the bride and groom, but so much more goes into the

The choices are endless; fly fishing the Elk River with the guides from Fernie Wilderness Adventure, playing a round of golf at Fernie Golf & Country Club, river rafting, zip lining at Fernie Alpine Resort, a visit to Fernie Brewing Company, or the Spa at Island Lake. Whichever you choose for your guests, at the end of the day they will fall into bed, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and wake ready for your big day. Choosing Fernie for your destination wedding makes your special day one that neither you, or your guests will soon forget! Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

A statue for all miners – the Miner’s Memorial Legacy The life-size bronze statue they envisioned was to honour all coal miners lost in mining accidents from the Michel/ Corbin area (Fording River to Coal Mountain) including the 15 men who lost their lives in the Balmer North explosion of April 3, 1967.

W

hen renowned sculpture artist Nathan Scott was commissioned by the District of Sparwood to craft a bronze statue for the community’s coal miner’s memorial he was delighted. Scott studies the key traits of each installation he works on and their relevance to the surrounding community. “The council in Sparwood decided on a pose and what they saw as important,” said Scott. “The miner’s lamp, lunchbox, helmet with light and battery pack. For Sparwood, Scott created a realistic, properly proportioned sculpture. “Since I knew the clothing they had, I found a person with the same body type and dressed him up and took photos. I sculpt realistic, so I went around the model and took a bunch of photos and measurements and then went onto the sculpting,” said Scott. Armed with his innate talent for sculpting, Scott has created an impressive body of work. He constructed the Terry Fox sculpture on Mile “0” of the TransCanada Highway at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. He also did the iconic bronze sculpture “The Homecoming” in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, which features a sailor’s reunion with his young daughter. It was installed in 2010 to honour the Canadian Navy’s 100th anniversary. Scott said he enjoyed working on the sculpture for the Balmer North memorial. Many of his former subjects have had to be formal or military in nature but the Sparwood memorial features an iconic working-class individual. The face of the miner in the photo Scott used to model the sculpture was purposely obscured so the finished work would commemorate the archetypical coal miner of the day and not a particular individual. “I love what he’s wearing and what he represents,” said Scott. “I know that mining town experience.” Creating the final product for the Sparwood memorial was a fairly drawn out process. Typically, after studying the concept and

44 Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

working with the client Scott begins by creating a full size clay model of the work. He pays attention to fine detail to craft as realistic a representation as possible. Once the client signs off on its final appearance the transformation from clay to bronze begins. A special mould or complete negative of the clay sculpture is made. The final molten bronze casting is done by what is called lost-wax or investment casting. For Nathan Scott it is a labour of love. His work reflects his love for people, young and old, interacting with their particular situations and surroundings. He gets to create works of art that people appreciate. The legacy for Sparwood is a magnificent life-like coal miner standing tall in his community and is an important historic commemoration of the men who dig for coal. Photo: Nathan Scott

Unforgettable river trips – something special for your summer Fer nie is home to some exceptional white water opportunities for adventurers to enjoy. Rafting adventures have been ongoing in the area for over 20 years, and continues to be a popular activity to add to itineraries.

B

ased on the local Elk, and Bull River there are unforgettable trips available throughout the spring and summer season. River trips offered vary from slower, picturesque journeys to sporty, high intensity trips. The Elk River runs through the town of Fernie. The headwaters of the river begin from the Petain Glacier flowing from the Elk Lakes Provincial Park, through Elkford and Sparwood before continuing its journey through Fernie. Here the river is mild, with only small class I rapids making this stretch of water perfect

for all ages and abilities. It is a relaxing and scenic journey where those on board are given a unique vantage of Fernie from the river while learning about the area, river and local flora and fauna. It is a half day trip, ideal for folks who do not have a full day to spare. The Elk River Canyon is where the big white water action takes place. Beginning a few kilometres below the Elko Dam, the 16 km paddle concludes at the Hwy 93 bridge, just before the Elk meets Lake Koocanusa. With class III and IV rapids winding through steep canyons - it is sure to keep the excitement levels

elevated. Early in the season (May-June), the snow melt and rainfall bring the water level up, producing larger rapids and faster flow. Perfect for thrill seekers! In the summer as the temperatures rise (JulyAugust), the water levels begin to drop making this the ideal time for those new to rafting, for families with children eight-years-old and up and experienced rafters. Slightly further afield, the Bull River, being of lower volume, is optimum during the early, high water season (May and June) The Bull River originates in the Rocky Mountains near the Continental Divide, flowing almost 120 km before reaching the Kootenay River. Moving through a spectacular mountain environment, the lesser travelled Bull River is a true opportunity. The rapids increase in intensity as the trip goes on, finishing in an exciting, extended canyon.

Both rivers are quiet which means you’ll be guaranteed an experience that is your own. There is also the potential for wildlife sightings on all river trips. Guides are certified and well trained, so you can ensure you’ll be in safe hands. Rafting in Fernie is unique, and will certainly add something special to your summer!

Arts & Culture in Fernie – a vibrant arts community The arts community in Fer nie is so vibrant, it’s bursting at the seams. With over two-dozen professional local artists, and six venues that host live music on a weekly basis, a trip to this mountain town will come with no short supply of entertainment.

F

ernie’s talented artists cross every genre of art; from oil painting, to luthiery (the art of making stringed instruments), to the only letterpress printing company in Western Canada. Some of the local artists are more prominent and well known, and some artists have yet to show their work to the public. However, they all possess a common love for what they do, and an expertise that cannot be overlooked. A walk through the downtown area will introduce you to many different studios. On 2nd Avenue alone, you can find photography, painting, letterpress work, clothing, woodwork, and more.

50 Summer 2017 - Thefreepress.ca

The Fernie Arts Station, formerly a dilapidated railroad station, serves as the hub of art in Fernie. On top of hosting monthly galleries featuring art from local artists half of the space is also used as a concert hall. Every Thursday they host talented musicians from around Canada, many of which are Juno-nominated or Juno-award-winning artists. Here you can find information and flyers on almost every artist in Fernie. Angela Morgan, Michael Hepher and Jaime McCallum, work under one roof at the Clawhammer Press and Angela Morgan Studio. Morgan, a world-renowned portrait painter, has owned the space for almost three years, and Photos: Phil McLachlan

features the work of landscape and figurative painter and good friend, Jaime McCallum. Hepher, a landscape and urban painter, also runs the only letterpress printing company in Western Canada out of the same building. Hung on the walls are hundreds of works of art. Studio 562 is home to talented landscape painter, Leanne Stothert, who practices painting through figurative, wildlife and nature pieces. She also occasionally features local artists in her open-concept studio. The Fernie Art Co-op provides local artists a venue to display and sell their work. Located at 572-2nd Ave. the Co-op is managed by a volunteer board of directors and is staffed by the artists that display their work there. The store features original paintings, handmade jewellery, textiles, photography and pottery. Eye of the Needle gallery can be found across the street from the Fernie Heritage Library on 5th St. and features work by owner Sandra Barrett, an expert in felting with 25 years of experience. Barrett makes fibre works of art out of her own alpaca wool, which she harvests from one of four alpacas on her acreage in Hosmer. She and her husband David, both experts in metalwork, operate Fernie Forge on that same property.

For exquisite stained glass, often boasting a mountain theme, Stephanie’s Glass & Art Studio is located on 2nd Ave. With over 40 years experience in creating glass pieces in both stained glass and sandblasted glassware, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. A mountain town would not be complete without its own chainsaw carver. Michael Penny displays his chainsaw carvings on Hwy 3 across from Dairy Queen. A relative newcomer to the art of chainsaw carving, you would not know it from the quality of workmanship he displays as he crafts pieces of wood into a variety of animals.

2. Nightlife

After a day of powder, there is no better way to unwind than a night on the town. Whatever you decide to do, you will find the hospitality second to none, and an atmosphere to suit everyone’s taste.

3. Ghostrider Hockey

A day filled with action on the hill is best topped off with action on the ice. Watching the Fernie Ghostriders, the hometown Jr. B team, keeps the adrenalin pumping even after the last run of the day. Fans of “our boys” are diehard, and you are sure to be as well.

4. People

1. Lifestyle

Fernie offers a unique lifestyle for those that love the snow and all the adventure it brings. Whether you are here for a visit, or decide to make Fernie your home, don’t be surprised after a big snowfall to find a sign on the door of your favourite shop declaring it to be a “Powder Day”. Head to the hill and immerse yourself in the excitement – you will be glad you did!
