WELCOME to Fernie

hether you have come to mountain bike, hike, or just relax and take in the scenery, Fernie will not disappoint. Set amidst the pristine Rocky Mountains, Fernie has everything an outdoor enthusiast could ask for. There are trails that surround the community, and provide an easy hike or ride for the novice, as well as a grueling challenge for the seasoned pro. Whether you choose Heiko’s Trail, the most challenging, or the Castle Mountain hike, a more relaxing climb, the views are breathtaking. The downtown core offers a unique and different shopping experience. Without the hustle and bustle of shopping malls and big box stores, Fernie has many shops offering one of a kind gifts to take home for friends. The arts culture in the community is vibrant, and the talented artists show their wares in the Arts Co-op, The Arts Station, at the Mountain Market, and in a variety of shops dotted throughout the city centre. While parking can be at a premium in the summer months as parking spaces are replaced by outdoor patios, the charm of the city is not sacrificed. The stunning view from any of the decks is the perfect backdrop for Fernie’s many culinary offerings. From fresh made bagels to authentic Mexican food, homemade fish and chips to Indian cuisine, even the most discerning palate will be satisfied. With the sun lingering long in the summer sky, the opportunity to wander the streets lasts late into the evening. Admire the architecture of the brick buildings that were built after the fires ravaged the city in 1904 and 1908. Stop by the Fernie Museum and visit the interactive displays to see the rich history of the town, and how it was rebuilt. Turn back time and learn about some of the colourful locals, including William Fernie, who lent his name to the city. As your day draws to a close, listen for the sound of music emanating from one of the many venues which offer a variety of musical entertainment, and stop in and have a nightcap. End your day falling into your comfortable sleeping quarters at one of the outstanding accommodations around town, and drift off as you hear the sound of the train whistle in the distance. Browse the pages in this guide. We hope it will give you ideas for adventures you had not yet thought of, and answer any questions you might have. Don’t be afraid to ask a local for directions, or recommendations for trails, dining, nightlife, art, or anything else you might need. There is something for everyone here, and Fernie has the friendliest people, all willing to help you make your stay more enjoyable. We are pleased that you have chosen to spend your time with us. Relax, enjoy, and immerse yourself in a true Fernie experience.

D

id you know that the beautiful Elk Valley is one of British Columbia’s most important industrial areas, home to five coal mines that produce 80 per cent of Canada’s steelmaking coal? Every July and August the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce and Elkford Visitor Centre run bus tours of Teck’s open pit steelmaking coal mines, which are all within an hour drive of Fernie. Buses stop at specially-placed lookout areas so you can safely get out to watch giant mechanical shovels clear waste rock away from the coal seams that run diagonally across the mountain. The coal is carried by house-sized haul trucks to the processing plant, where it is sorted, washed and dried before being loaded onto the CP Rail train and transported through B.C. to be shipped around the world to make steel. On the tour you’ll also see the maintenance shop that helps to keep the equipment in good working order, including stacks of large truck tires that cost over $40,000 each. Look out on the access roads to the operations — hundreds of elk, deer and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep live on the mine properties. Teck is committed to responsible, sustainable mining and has received a range of recognition from organizations for work in this area. On the tour you will also visit areas where mined land

is being reclaimed and replanted with native species, and find out about the company’s water management work.

Fernie – Secrets Looking up into the mountains, it goes without saying that this area holds a few secrets.

F

ernie wasn’t always a mountain town. During a time before humans, aquatic wildlife ruled. Not far out of town is a relic, reminding humans that they were not the first to explore these hills. The Fernie Ammonite fossil; large enough for a child to lie in. During the late Jurassic Period some 150 million years ago, when shallow seas covered parts of British Columbia, these animals thrived. They were fast moving, predatory cephalopods, with large eyes and numerous long tentacles protruding from the opening in the large end of their shell, similar to a giant coiled squid. When they died, they would float to the surface and come to a stop on a sandy beach where they would be buried and eventually fossilized. Now, some of these fossils have been discovered, and we’re lucky enough to have one close to home. To date, the Fernie ammonite remains one of Canada’s largest ammonite fossils. To find this 1.4-metre fossil, you’ll have to ask around. One can expect to brave sketchy directions, through thick wooded forests, and up a steep, slippery creek bed trail in order to find this lost giant. Occasionally throughout the summer, a tour will bring a group of people to the site. Some of Fernie’s secrets can be found above ground, but for others, you’ll have to dip below the surface; for one in particular, over 500 metres from sunlight. On New Years 2018, a group of explorers discovered a cave in Fernie that goes far deeper than previously thought. Just north of Fernie,

10 Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

B.C, the cave, named Bisaro Anima, is located in a remote mountain plateau and stretches 5.3 kilometres in length and 670 metres deep – beating Heavy Breather, also located near Fernie, which is 644 metres deep. First discovered in 2012, the cave has been visited by many who have found access to different veins. But on New Year’s Day, 10 spelunkers camped out 520 metres down, and after exploring further, have confirmed the cave is now considered the deepest in all of North America. The team descended 30 vertical shafts – some up to 35 stories long – through the passage, and then climbed using ropes and technical caving equipment. Their extensive knowledge of the topography and geology of the cave has them estimating the depth potential of the system at more than 1,000 metres. Bisaro Anima is considered a milestone because of its natural features – it has only one entrance, whereas many deep caves have multiple – as well as the plateau’s connection to history. The cave is near Mt. Bisaro, a mountain range named after Fernie-born infantryman Torindo Bisaro, who fell during the invasion of Normandy in World War II. And some underground passages have been named Vimy Ridge, the trenches, Dieppe and the Black Watch. There are those that know this valley like the back of their hand. That being said, some of Fernie’s secrets are only known by the most local of locals. So who knows; ask around. Maybe you’ll learn of a few more. Photo: Free Press files

ne of the most iconic facilities in the Elk Valley, the Fernie Golf Club will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this summer. Since 1918, the golf course has been a spectacular amenity that both residents and visitors alike have cherished through the years. To honour this long history and to celebrate the people who helped create this treasured community asset, the Fernie Golf Club will play host to a weeklong centennial celebration from July 3-7, 2018. The afternoon events will culminate with a barbecue dinner where the builders and developers of the club will be honoured.

During the week the club leagues will be holding various celebrations. The Ladies League will host a 100 Years of Swinging Skirts – Celebrating the Fernie Golf Club Ladies League on Tuesday July 3. The following day the Men’s League will host the Men’s Special 100 Night. This evening play will be a Shot Gun start and will feature a number of special “100” contests, including several par 3 100 yard holes, 100 putting contests and prizes for the score closest to 100. Fernie Golf Club Honouring the Past The first home of the Fernie Golf Club course, which started in 1918, lay in the area of today’s soccer fields in Prentice Park.

The Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company supplied the land for the first holes with additional funding generated through donations, membership fees, and fundraisers. The early success of the club, as it remains today, is largely attributable to the hard work of its volunteer members. The 1918 course had only a few holes but by 1921, there were a further nine, also located on coal company land. The layout of new holes continued to move the course north of the town and a clubhouse, reclaimed from a nearby sawmill, was moved to where the present golf cart house is located. Club members played on grass fairways that were maintained with a horse-drawn roller. This presented some challenges for the club when the horse ran away and the club owed $100 to the owner. The horse was eventually recovered and the club continued to grow and expand. The original greens were made from different mixes of sand, sawdust and used oil, collected from local garages. The greens keeper’s job would be to get the mix just right so a golfer could predict his putting speed. The club

12 Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

consistently employed a greens keeper from the early years. One of the first greens keepers, Andrew Lees was paid $100 a year in 1927 and lived in the clubhouse rent-free. In the hard times of the 1930s, the club could only afford to pay the greens keeper $70 a year. The Fernie Golf Club, which joined forces with the local tennis club, was renamed the Fernie Golf and Country Club in 1928. The same year, the Ladies Club, which had been active since the early days also joined the larger organization and became a strong force organizing events and tournaments. From the 1930s into the 1950s, the club struggled to maintain operations from year to year and had to develop creative ways to pay unforeseen expenses. In 1942, the old worn tractor, used for untold maintenance tasks, broke down. Faced with a lack of funds to fix or replace it, club members were asked to prepay upwards of $10 of their membership fees for the next season, in hopes of raising enough money. Many members stepped up, and along with the agreement of the coal company to forego that year’s property rental fee of $300, a used tractor was purchased and the season carried on. The clubhouse was the center of social activities for club members, with Ladies Club members inviting guests to tea to show-off

the club’s amenities and golfers meeting for post-game libations. At the 1936 AGM, House Committee chairman Mr. Stewart reported that the clubhouse “had been run very satisfactorily, the house not having been visited by the red coats during the season”. In 1968, the construction and planting of new grass greens began and other course upgrades took place including piping for underground sprinkling systems and realigning holes. A few years later in 1972, a new clubhouse, with a pro shop and maintenance building, was built at the end of 2nd Avenue. As the 1980s arrived, club members started dreaming about 18 holes. With the generous help of local industry, government grants and a bank loan, members were golfing on one of

Fishing – What’s the lure?

F

or thousands of years, the Elk River has served as the lifeblood for the Elk Valley. Over 30 tributaries feed this body of water as it flows 180 km through the valley, finally emptying into Lake Koocanusa. In this precious water you can find a large variety of aquatic life – from native westslope cutthroat trout, bull trout and mountain whitefish. The cutthroat is a member of the salmon family, and can be identified by the pink, red or orange markings on their throat. They range in length from eight to 18 inches and eagerly rise to the surface to eat dry flies. Today, cutthroat are hard to find, making this a threatened species. The Elk River is one of the last places where this fish thrives. Bull trout, another endangered species that have disappeared from many rivers can still be found in South eastern B.C. These huge fish can reach up to 30 inches in length. Paul Samycia, owner of the Elk River Guiding Company, said the river’s native fish make the Elk Valley watershed one of the most

14 Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

spectacular dry-fly fisheries in the world. Compared to other styles of fishing, fly fishing a whole new game. Like golf, it takes time to master. If lake fishing is more your style, there are many lakes close by where you can find a variety of aquatic life including largemouth bass and rainbow trout. If you’re new to the sport, or don’t know where do start, visit the Elk River Guiding Company. For your first time experiencing Kootenay waters, a guide can be a great addition to your adventure, as their knowledge of the area can help you find that perfect spot. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the regulations before going out to fish. Fishing licenses can be bought online, at the Fernie Courthouse or at most fly shops. An annual Classified Waters License costs $36 for B.C. residents. Out-of-province anglers pay a fee of $20 per day. Photo: @mcphoto99

Folklore – the legend of the Ghostrider Lying in the shadows, a legend waits for the after noon sun. On a summer evening, out of Mt. Hosmer’s face, comes the Ghostrider – the shadow of a distinctive horse and rider, the ghost some say of an angry Indian Chief and his jilted daughter pursuing William Fer nie.

A

s legend has it, William Fernie was courting an Indian Princess to learn the source of her sacred black stone necklace. After learning the secret location of the Morrissey Coal Seams, Fernie stopped seeing the Princess and the tribe’s medicine woman placed a curse on the Elk Valley. Residents of Fernie feared the curse was real after several tragedies struck the town. Fire reduced the town to smouldering rubble in 1904 and again in 1908. In 1916, the Elk

River flooded and in 1917, there was a mining disaster, which claimed the lives of 128 men. Finally, a public ceremony in 1964 officially lifted the curse. Members of the Kootenay Tribes assembled in Fernie and Chief Red Eagle and Fernie Mayor James White smoked a pipe of peace. Although it has now been 40 years since the curse was lifted, on summer evenings, the ghost of an angry Indian chief and his jilted daughter still ride above Fernie and their legend lives on in the shadows of the mountain.

Welcoming visitors to Fernie

T

he Fernie Chamber of Commerce has operated the Visitor Information Centre on Highway 3 since the early 1980s. The building is on land dedicated by the province to provide visitor information and interpretive services. In 2017, the Visitor Centre welcomed over 17,000 guests. A 15 per cent increase over 2016. It is an indication of Fernie’s growing popularity as a holiday destination. Introduced last August at the Wednesday Social and Concert Series was the Visitor Centre Mobile Kiosk. With assistance from Destination BC, the Chamber purchased a tent and equipment to set-up on site at events. This is a growing trend in visitor services to go to where the people are. Watch for the big blue tent when around town to get information on all things Fernie. Since opening in 1902, the Chamber has understood the value of visitors to our community. In 1921, the Chamber (then called the Board of Trade) secured land near the train station to house a tourist information centre. Nearly a century later, we are still welcoming

visitors to our community. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce is a business association whose mission is to strengthen commerce in Fernie. Welcoming visitors and encouraging longer stays is one way we do this. Other activities include local business education sessions, advocacy, and events. We invite you to visit us at 102 Commerce Road (just off Highway 3) to learn more about the Chamber.

Fernie trails - yours to discover Where are you going to ride your bike, or what trail are you going to hike this summer?

F

or me personally, I can barely wait for the first ride up Hyper Ventilation. Climbing up through the cool forests on the side of Castle Mountain, then coming out to the first bench, with views stretching across the valley, then tackling the second steep grunt climb to arrive at the descent of Hyper Extension leaves me ecstatic. Cruising down the technical rooty, upper section, then plunging into the shady side hill traverse, before exploding out into the lower logging block is absolute bliss. As far as hiking goes, I plan to get back up onto the Mt. Hosmer Trail. This relatively moderate hike from Hartley Lake Road, always provides this feeling of great achievement, as one crests the saddle ridge, where the views of the backside of Mt. Proctor, Three Sisters, and the great peaks of Bull River are revealed. Hi, my name is Terry Nelson, and I am the residing president of the Fernie Trails Alliance

(F.T.A.). The not for profit society works with outdoor recreation groups, government and private landowners to enhance and maintain the Fernie trail network. As most trail users have seen ongoing improvements to Fernie’s expansive trail network, it is now time to create a broader awareness of how these trails will be maintained into the future. The F.T.A. operates with the support and cooperation of many entities, including funding grants, donations, volunteers, landowners, and government agencies. Through this support comes trail enhancements, and trail maintenance programs. Striving to provide access opportunities for all trail users, the varied demographics, and ability levels, while keeping the fun in recreation, can be challenging. For the 2018 season, there are many projects Photos: Fernie Trails Alliance

planned. We will be constructing an additional 8 km. of single track onto the Coal Discovery Trail to connect the Elk Valley Trail to Hosmer from Fernie. Another exciting project will see the completion of the Flow Trail, located up on Rifle Range Road above Coal Creek. Providing a full on, roller coaster bike ride, should help keep the summer adrenaline flowing. In cooperation with the Montane property owners, a new green all access trail will begin construction. Built to support adaptive mountain bikes such as trike bikes, hand bikes and wheelchair bikes for differently abled riders requiring a certain type of trail, our crews will be working to make this a reality. General maintenance will be ongoing, with surface improvements, brushing, and drainage enhancements making up the majority of the work. We have committees also working on the planning of the completion of the Fernie to Ski Hill trail, and a group working on a route for an “Epic Trail”. A 40+ km. trail that takes you up into the alpine, and leads you back to town for your well deserved recovery refreshments.

Mountain Biking – on the right path No matter where you’re standing in Fer nie, if you look to the hills – it’s possible to get there through our expansive trail network.

R

iding through birch forests, pedaling under the shadows of old growth trees, or journeying through swamps; the things you’ll see when you hop on your bike are unlimited, not to mention the incredibly satisfying views you’ll get of the valley once you reach the top of your climb. The beauty of mountain biking in Fernie is that it accommodates riders of every skill level. Whether you just want to cruise through silent forests on some well-groomed berms or strap on your full-face helmet and shred some downhill, Fernie’s forests has trails for everyone. If you’re new to town, or new to the sport, where do you start? We recommend checking out any of the four bike shops located downtown on 2nd Avenue. Some offer both new and used bikes, with a large variety of equipment that’s sure to get you going. If you just want to test the ropes, ask about renting a bike for the day. Bicycles of all kinds are popular here – even townie’s. These fun one-speed cruisers are perfect for getting around town and hanging

out at outdoor concerts. Before you head out, make sure to pick up a Fernie Mountain Bike Guide and trail map to help you find your way. Additionally, download this area in the Trail Forks app on your smartphone to accurately track your position in case you lose your way. Once you’re in the woods, look for the many well-marked trails graded from green to double black diamond in difficulty. At Fernie Alpine Resort, take a lift up to one of two sides for an exciting downhill run. If you don’t have a downhill bike, don’t worry, the resort offers a variety of rentals. Before heading out into the woods, it’s a good idea to bring some extra water, nutrition, and a can of bear spray. Encounters with animals are rare, but not unheard of. Remember that this is their home and they use the trails too. One last thing: mountain biking is more fun with friends! If you’re looking meet some other riders, ask around at the bike shops about the many group rides throughout the week. Find one that fits your riding style and enjoy! Photo: Free Press files

bear safety

R

unning into a black or grizzly bear while in Fernie can be a fairly common occurrence, they are our neighbours after all. It’s important to be bear aware at all times when you’re venturing out on the trails. The safest bear encounter is one prevented. Make noise to warn bears of your presence and avoid surprise encounters. Call out, clap your hands, sing or talk loudly, especially when approaching blind corners or shrubby areas. Carry bear spray, keep it accessible and know how to use it. Only rely on it as a last resort. Most human-bear encounters can be resolved without the use of bear spray, if not avoided entirely. Know your bear signs: −Scat is usually black in colour and will contain the remains of what was last eaten. Green scat is very fresh and means a bear is nearby. −Claw marks on trees or rotted stumps

wildlife

Living in Fernie means sharing our home with many different animals. The Elk Valley is well known for its abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see elk, deer, moose, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. You might even be lucky enough to come across a wolf, coyote, cougar, lynx, or bobcat. Keep an eye out when you’re hiking the trails, cooling off in the river, or when you’re just taking a leisurely stroll down Second Avenue. And summer, of course, is bear season. Black bears are spotted frequently in and around town and the Elk and Flathead Valleys have one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears. Make sure you’ve always got your camera handy, but remember to keep your distance, and don’t forget to respect the nature we’re so proud of.

and logs. −Torn up rotted logs and stumps or overturned rocks (done by a bear looking for insects). −Bear tracks (bears have five toes

and five claws). If you encounter a bear: −Remain calm, do not panic. −Do not run. Bears are predators (hunters), and running may cause a predatory response. If the bear hasn’t seen you: −Don’t attract the bear’s attention by making noise or yelling at it. −Look for a safe and quiet way of retreating while remaining aware of what the bear is doing. If the bear has seen you: −Stand your ground. −Make yourself as large as possible. −Speak to the bear, let it know that you are human. −Back away slowly and leave the area.

Hitting all the right notes You know that the music scene in a small town of 5000 is very much alive when on any given day of the week you can ask the question ‘Is it Jam Night Tonight?’ And the answer is ‘Yes’. Fernie, with its transiently permanent and permanently transient ski-bum population flowing in every winter, is always being filled up with new musical talent to collaborate with locals and the ski-bums that never left. Boasting everything from amateur open-mic nights to established small venues hosting upand-coming touring artists to big stages where international bands play to its very own music festival, Fernie has a rich and layered live music scene. In more recent years, community & City initiated music events such as the Summer Socials, the Canada Day concert & numerous celebrations framed by music performances, continue to ensure that live music is very much a part of the already beautiful backdrop of Fernie. Wapiti Music Festival, which started in 2011 in Annex Park, now hosts over 2000 music lovers each year and attracts some really big industry names, helping to highlight Fernie as a music touring destination. You only need to look at local success stories Shred Kelly & The Runs to see how important continuing to foster a live music scene in Fernie really is. Shred Kelly were indeed part of the ski bum influx that found themselves playing at local Jam nights and in 2009 they decided to form a band… a band who now puts on the annual Stokefest concert at the Community Centre and tours the world sharing their unique Fernie folk-stomp sound. The Runs, Fernie’s #2 band, were formed circa 2004 when local entrepreneurs and ski bums took jamming to the next level. And just last year The CCR Experience emerged giving fans even more local bands to support. Venues including the Kodiak Lounge, The Royal, The Brickhouse, Infinitea and the Fernie Hotel all continue to host free live music nights weekly and year-round which says a lot for the future of live music in Fernie. Next time you

wander into one of those venues, take a look around, you never know who has just met and are jamming for the first time…

Fernie Distillers – raising spirits

O

perated by husband and wife team Andrew Hayden and Jillian Rutherford (pictured above), Fernie Distillers is the first licensed craft distillery producing small batch spirits and liqueurs in historic downtown Fernie. Using proven age-old techniques and the finest ingredients, Fernie Distillers produces top quality spirits that reflect the community and its environment, as represented by their tagline “Local Spirit. Distilled.” Fernie Distiller’s flagship range includes their No. 9 Mine Vodka - a wheat-based vodka, rich in flavour and distinctly smooth; Fernie Fog an Earl Grey tea-infused liqueur with vanilla and demerara sugar and; Prospector Gin - a well-balanced classic gin, distilled with juniper, citrus fruit and botanicals. Each is made with locally sourced wheat from Creston, BC and produced in small batches of less than 200 bottles. They’re looking forward to growing their product range further to include unique barrel-aged and seasonal batch spirits. “We are passionate about making quality products and are excited to share our results with the community” Rutherford said. The production side of the operation is led by Rutherford, who, with her engineering background is one of the few female distillers in

44 Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Canada. With Hayden’s experience working for global alcoholic beverage brands and consumer packaged goods, they make a well-blended management team with all the necessary industry experience. The distillery is located at 531 1st Avenue, adjacent to Branch 36 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Formerly the hall of the Legion, the 3,200-sq.-ft. building has been transformed into a modern production facility, tasting room and lounge. Fernie Distillers invites you to come view the stills, chat with the distiller and learn about the process, or enjoy a tasting of their current products by relaxing in the lounge with a cocktail. Hayden and Rutherford have created a unique and welcoming space, unlike any other in Fernie. Informal yet refined at the same time, this versatile venue is also available to rent for private events. “We are grateful to have the relationship with the Fernie Legion that allowed us to purchase part of their property. We are delighted to have them as neighbours and we’ve become dedicated advocates of theirs,” says Rutherford. Bottled spirits are available for purchase direct from the tasting room at 531 1st Avenue and selected private liquor stores. Visit Ferniedistillers.com for Summer opening hours. Fernie Brewing Co. – in good taste

L

ocated just off Hwy 3, lies Fernie’s premier (and only!) Craft Brewery. Established in 2003, Fernie Brewing Co. (FBC) came from humble beginnings in the Pask family barn, located just off Dicken Road. With their dream of bringing the brew back to valley, and a passion for making exceptional craft beer, in 2007 they relocated to its current home, at 26 Manitou Road. It was the start of things to come. Fifteen years on and FBC has a plethora of core, seasonal and limited release beers, available throughout Western Canada. In fact, FBC’s Head Brewer, Jeff Demaniuk, believes that within the large portfolio of beers, there is a brew for practically every taste. With around 25 beers available throughout the year, the question is, which to try first? In addition to a growing year-round line up, Fernie Brewing Co. offers a rotating IPA Series introduces a brand-new IPA every second month. Recent beers such as the Snowblind Belgian-Style IPA, Nighthawk Farmhouse IPA and Free Fall Double IPA, ensure a unique, new offering is just around the corner. Meanwhile the adventurous craft consumer, can choose from limited release beers such as the Fresh Hop Pale Ale, Black Mammoth Winter Ale, Three Kings Belgian-Style Tripel or High Side Saison, to name but a few. Photo: Fernie Brewing Co./Matt Kuhn

Renovated in Spring 2017 a visitor to the Tasting Room will find up to 12-beers on tap, which can be enjoyed by the glass, as part of a Flight of 4, or in a Growler to go. Alternatively, you can pick up packaged product, or if looking for something a little more substantial, order a keg. FBC’s “Cheers to Charity” program is the most popular offering in the Tasting Room. Feeling so fortunate to do business in Fernie, FBC wanted to find a way of giving back to their local community. As such, all profits from flights sold in the Tasting Room are donated to a local charity or organization, rotated throughout the year. It’s their way of saying thanks and to support initiatives which without funds, would not be able to operate. Whilst being undoubtedly the most worthwhile beer all day. During the summer months, visitors can easily reach the brewery by bike or on foot, where a sunny patio awaits. Alternatively, you can step things up a notch, and take on the FBC Trail to Ale Challenge, bagging three of Fernie’s favourite trails in 24hrs, on bike or on foot. For more information on FBC, head to their website ferniebrewing.com or follow them on Social Media @ferniebrewingco, to stay up to date on Beer Launches, Events, Tasting Room hours and brew-tastic goings on. levels elevated. Early in the season (May-June), the snowmelt and rainfall bring the water level up, producing larger rapids and faster flow. Perfect for thrill seekers! In the summer as the temperatures rise (July-August), the water levels begin to drop making this the ideal time for those new to rafting, for families with children eight-years-old and up and experienced rafters. Slightly further afield, the Bull River, being of lower volume, is optimum during the early, high water season (May and June) Both rivers are quiet, which means you’ll be guaranteed an experience that is your own. There is also the potential for wildlife sightings on all river trips. Guides are certified and well trained, so you can ensure you’ll be in safe hands. If you have always wanted to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Canyon Raft Company has trained professional guides that will progress your SUP skills with their customized tours. Start at the lake and learn the basics. When you feel more comfortable, try the river for a little more excitement. Whatever your water adventure, rafting or SUP, Fernie has it all.

With an action-packed calendar of events yearround, there’s plenty to keep both visitors and residents entertained, with highlights including a concert series, opera screenings, exhibitions and murder mystery evenings. The Arts Station is also home to a range of guilds and clubs. The Fernie Potters Guild operates out of the basement of The Arts Station and is run by a group of volunteers, with five electric wheels, a slab roller, digital electric kiln and studio tools that members may use. They meet every Tuesday night and the guild hosts classes and workshops at various times throughout the year. An afternoon of art gazing wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Fernie Art Co-Op. Located at 572 2nd Ave, the co-op is managed by a volunteer board of directors and staffed by artists who display their work, which includes original paintings, handmade jewellery, textiles, photography and pottery. Visitors will also find artwork where they least expect it.

Every year, The Arts Station and City of Fernie invite local artists to turn commercial trash and recycling dumpsters into works of art, with a live painting event held in Station Square. Beyond the art galleries and studios are craft fairs and markets held throughout the year, as well as film and music festivals. to Come Back for Winter

offer a spectacular view of the Lizard Range which can be enjoyed as you warm in front of the fireplace.

3. Griz Days

1. Fernie Ghostriders Hockey

This is hometown hockey at its finest! After being displaced last season, the Ghostriders are expected to come back stronger and feistier than ever. With a dedicated following, this junior “B: hockey team boasts a strong and vocal fan base. These raucous fans come in droves to see their boys, and the spirit of the game is contagious. With hard-hitting action and not a bad seat in the house, the competition is fierce.

2. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is abundant in powder-laden Fernie, where the City’s vast trail system can lead from the quaint downtown, to breathtaking snow-capped views. After a healthy snowfall, don your shoes and head out onto the Montane trail network. A trek to the warming hut will

52 Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Guaranteed an abundance of snow, thanks in large part to the Griz, this weekend celebration provides fun for the entire family. Axe-throwing and an obstacle course, pancake eating competition and grizzly- faced folks clad in pelts and plaid are just a part of the fun. Dummies of the stuffed and homemade variety are launched off of ski jumps, and babies are bribed by any means to crawl as fast as they can. The parade is always a hit, and, did we mention the plethora of powder?

4. Fat Biking

If you like mountain biking, you are going to love fat biking! This winter favourite for mountain bikers in Fernie allows them to keep in shape for the summer season. Many of the trails around Fernie are suitable for fat biking, and some are groomed especially for this purpose. Bring your woollies, and give it a try! You will be glad you did.

5. Cat Skiing

If first tracks is your thing, (and really, isn’t it everybody’s?), then cat skiing is the way to go. Guided cat skiing is offered by both Island Lake Lodge and Fernie Wilderness Adventures, if this is on your bucket list, then a return trip to Fernie in the winter and a date with these pros will give you the opportunity to cross it off. 6. Lifestyle

Fernie offers a unique lifestyle for those that love the snow and the adventure it brings. Deep snow is the norm rather than the exception, and when it comes, signs are often hung on the shop doors declaring it a “Powder Day.” This indicates the shop is closed and the staff has headed for the hill. If you can’t beat ‘em you may as well join them. Shopping can always wait, but powder waits for no man (or woman)!

7. Snowmobiling

With over 150 kilometres of maintained snowmobile trails, Fernie offers terrain to suit every level of rider. Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) maintains the trails throughout the area, providing grooming services, warming cabins, trail maps, signage and staging areas. The local authorities on all things “sledding”, the FSA has the information you need to get the most out of your sledding experience.

8. Christmas

As if living in Fernie were not gift enough, we even get to celebrate Christmas! There was never a town that was more inviting, or beautiful during the holidays. From sleigh rides at Fernie Alpine Resort to mulled wine at Infinitea, the scene is set. With the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains and the lights decorating the downtown core, even those who are Scrooge-like will be in bed in time for the jolly old fellow to come down their chimney! In their trusty Yellow 1971 VW Van, Truman, the Hephers recreated family road trips from the 70s and reconnected with each other, their environment, and a more relaxed pace of travel. Conflict Far from the Front: Fernie at War

A

s tensions ignited in Europe in 1914, the Elk Valley’s burgeoning mining community faced its own tribulations. The Morrissey and Hosmer Coal Mines had failed and left ghost towns that shrank from populations of over 1,000 each to just a few dozen residents by mid-1914. At Coal Creek the mines fared better and operated for many years – through both world wars – but had suffered one of Canada’s worst ever mining disasters when 128 men died in the explosion of 1902. Despite all this, Fernie flourished at the start of the 20th century and the pioneer spirit was strong.

As calls for enlistment began, a recruitment office was opened in Fernie. 1,100 men joined the 107th East Kootenay Regiment, which sent the 54th and 225th Kootenay Battalions to war as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 107th East Kootenay Regiment also provided guards for local internment camps. British patriotism and diminishing work localised the conflict and created nationalistic tensions between mine workers at Coal Creek. Following a series of meetings between workers,

union representatives, mine management and town officials between June 7-9, 1914, all local men of Austro-Hungarian or German descent who were single or married without families were rounded up and transferred to the Fernie Skating and Curling Rink for internment. More men arrived from around the area and within 10 days, 290 were interned. Regardless of the reportedly good spirits of the internees, the camp was unsuitable for so many men and winter was coming. Major General Sir William Otter, Commander in charge of internment operations in Canada, instructed the vacant Alexandria Hotel at Morrissey to be prepared for a full-scale internment operation. The camp housed up to 240 prisoners over the duration of the war. Relations were good while the majority of the internees were local workers, however the transfer of new prisoners from across Canada increased tensions and the conditions became grim and unhealthy. The camp finally closed in September 1918 and the remaining prisoners volunteered for railway construction jobs in Alberta. Summer 2018 - Thefreepress.ca

A

s any local will tell you, it is the only way to spend your Labour Day Sunday in Fernie. The event which takes place at 1800 Railway Ave., on the opposite side of the Fernie Golf Club from the rodeo grounds has been a local tradition for over 40 years and is a major fundraiser for the local Lions Club. The venue has bleachers for comfort, a concession stand, a beer-garden and an announcer’s booth. Through its long history, almost half a million dollars has been raised for the Fernie Lions Club and many cars have been reduced to scrap metal. The Fernie Lions Club uses the funds raised to support youth sports, seniors, people with special needs and local families.
