D

o you want your wedding to be perfect? Here is a list of all the necessary steps you need to follow in order to turn your wedding into a dream come true. About one year before the wedding • Reception hall Lots of options are open to you, such as a hotel reception room, restaurant, boat, golf club or marquee tent. Depending on your budget, think about the style of wedding you’d like and choose a suitable venue. • Caterer When booking a caterer, don’t forget to talk about all the details of the meal. Will the kitchen be on site? Will taxes be charged? Can they

EAST KOOTENAY WEDDINGS

make the cake as well? • Celebrant Meet with the celebrant to set a date for your wedding and to see which documents you will need to supply. About six months before the wedding • Music and MC Now you will have to choose a master of ceremonies (MC) as well as a DJ or musicians. This is an important step, as the MC will create the mood of the evening. Choose someone who will respect your tastes and requirements. • Clothing and accessories Now’s the time to think about purchasing and fitting the wedding dress, the groom’s tuxedo, and accessories, such as shoes. Make sure you order your wedding bands at this time. • Photographer Book the services of a professional photographer in order to have a lasting record of your wedding day memories. Unfortunately, a friend or family member, however wellintentioned, is rarely able to produce quality photos. About three months before the

wedding • Decorations and flowers Decorations, flowers, and the bridal bouquet should be ordered now. Ensure that the style and colours of these elements complement each other. • Car Reserve the services of a chauffeur ,

arriving in a limousine, a convertible, or an antique car is a great way to start your big day. • Honeymoon Lastly, spoil yourselves with a romantic interlude to start your married life. Treat yourselves to a trip you’ll never forget. Just make sure your passports haven’t expired!

EAST KOOTENAY WEDDINGS

Be inspired by the East Kootenay “Congratulations on your engagement! So where’s the wedding going to be held?”

I

f this question has been sending you into a panic, you can now relax. Whether you’re planning a lavish white wedding or an intimate ceremony atop a mountain, the East Kootenay is the perfect location for you. Churches: For many, weddings are synonymous with churches, securing their title as the number one place to walk down the aisle. The communities of the East Kootenay are home to houses for a variety of denominations and will be able to provide a ceremony that satisfies your spiritual side. A traditional church wedding will add an air of importance and reverence to your big day.

Golf: The contrast of manicured greens against a mountain background provide a stunning setting for wedding photos, not to mention the freedom of indoor and outdoor spaces that clubhouses offer for your reception. Combined with expert staff and plenty of local connections, choose one of the region’s several golf courses as the ideal location for your wedding. Resorts: The resorts of the East Kootenay are renowned tourist destinations, but even locals will feel like they’re on vacation with a wedding at one of these famous locations. Consider Panorama Mountain Village

Local areas of interests

in Columbia Valley, Creston’s Mountain Park Resort, the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino between Cranbrook and Kimberley, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden or the Elk Valley’s Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake Lodge. The scenery and facilities at any of these destinations are second-to-none and are available all year round for a ceremony in any season. Restaurants and reception rooms: Restaurants and hotels are experienced wedding hosts and offer a range of culinary options and venue spaces. In addition to an amazing menu, look for an atmosphere that is warming and conducive to great conversations.

In Fernie, the Best Western Plus Mountain Lodge and Red Tree Lodge have all the facilities to suit any sized function while CP Catering services several locations including the Bridge Bistro and Corner Pocket Brasserie. Creston’s Skimmerhorn Winery offers an outstanding menu complete with local wine to complement your meal, or consider Strand’s Old House Restaurant in Invermere for another luxurious dining experience. Frank’s Steak & Schnitzel Haus in Cranbrook offers good old-fashioned comfort food to satisfy your guests or indulge in options like maple and espresso glazed buffalo at the Cedar House. Bon appetit!

WINDERMERE

I

f you love the outdoors, the East Kootenay provides a seemingly endless number of options for your big day. The Annex in Fernie features a beautiful park alongside the Elk River, while the old mine ruins at Hosmer create an interesting contrast in scenery. Soak in the summer sun at Lake Windermere or visit the Radium Hot Springs to float away in relaxing warm water. The orchards and wineries near Creston are perfect for sampling local produce while the Cominco Gardens in Kimberley provide an oasis of blooms to compliment a great wedding celebration. FERNIE For the most adventurous of lovebirds, hiking to the top of a mountain delivers magnificent views of the valley below, or say “I do” to the backdrop of sheer cliffs and crystal clear water at Silver Springs Lakes near Elko. If a steep hike isn’t for you, a gentler way to reach panoramic mountain views can be found on the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort gondola. History buffs can visit one of the many local museums to explore artifacts of days past, or sports fans can catch a Kootenay Ice game in Cranbrook during the winter season. The Pynelogs Cultural Centre, Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre and the Arts Station in Fernie are other enjoyable indoor venues for those looking to add a little culture to their celebrations. Of course, if your wedding guests really want to step back in time, Fort Steele Heritage town KIMBERLEY has more than 60 restored and reconstructed buildings that contain shops, restaurants and PHOTOS: Submitted even candy from the bygone pioneer era.

Wedding dress silhouettes

Weddings

F

ew wardrobe decisions are scrutinized as much as a bride-to-be’s choice of wedding gown. Finding the right gown means having an understanding of what silhouettes are available and what flatters certain body types. Here is a look of some of the common types of gown silhouettes and why choosing this shape might be right for you. Ballgown A ballgown dress is truly a classic style, evoking images of fairy tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt, typically poofed-up by crinoline will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ballgown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures. A-line Another silhouette very forgiving or appropriate for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses should be the go-to style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips to form the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favorite among brides. Trumpet Women who prefer something a little more form-fitting may select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted through the body and then the

9

gown flares out at mid-thigh level. Women with taught stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to select something else. Mermaid A bit more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown. Modified A-line A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much. But it does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures. Tea length Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor can opt for a tea length dress, in which the skirt generally falls between the ankle and the knee. Sheath Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success. PHOTO: Matt Kuhm

Making it legal in British Columbia Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were recently divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No licence is issued until the courts finalize a divorce, normally 31 days after the divorce decree is issued by the Courts. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony,

which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or

religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage. Which name can I use?

• After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Look stylish with necktie basics

M

en’s formal attire would not be the same without the necktie. Men have been donning ties for generations, and during that time several different styles of knots have come into and fell out of fashion. The first step in wearing a tie is finding one that fits. Individuals who feel their ties come out just a tad too short once the knot has been tied may have to move from a standard 59-inch tie to an extra-long tie, which is a few inches longer. When buying ties, men should add their height in inches to their neck size in inches. If the sum of those measurements exceeds 91 inches, a longer tie figures to be a better fit. Ties come in many colours and patterns. A tie should complement the ensemble. Choose a tie that features the same hues as the suit and the shirt you intend to wear. Complementary colours include those that are opposite on the colour wheel. Therefore, blue and orange goes well together, as does purple and yellow. Once a tie is selected, choose a knot that will fit your personality and the style of dress. Here are the options: * Four in hand knot: This is one of the more common knots. It creates a narrow, slightly asymmetrical tie knot. It looks best on men with

shorter necks but can be worn by anyone. * Pratt knot: The Pratt knot, sometimes referred to as the Shelby knot, is fairly wide. It fits well with wider neckties made from medium fabrics. * Windsor knot: This knot is wide and triangular. It can present an air of confidence and is a classic, conservative knot. It looks very good when paired with a spread shirt collar. Men who have long necks can benefit from a Windsor knot because it will shorten the perceived length of the neck a bit. * Half-Windsor knot: This is a variation on the Windsor knot, which creates a knot that is a little more narrow. It is effective with any dress shirt and can be used with somewhat wider neckties. * Bowtie knot: Most men rely on the bowtie knot for formal, elegant occasions. It is usually reserved for black-tie affairs worn in conjunction with a tuxedo. Practice is usually needed to perfect these knots. It is essential to properly remove from the tie each and every time. This means reversing the steps you did to tie the necktie to prolong its life. Once the tie is off, roll the tie around your hand to create a tube-like shape. Then store the tie in a drawer this way. Any wrinkles will ease out eventually. This method of storage is also a good way of packing ties for travel, as it prevents wrinkling and damage

while in transit. Ties should not be stored dirty. Some stains can be spot-cleaned. Avoid harsh stain removers on silk ties, which are delicate. Dry-cleaning can take care of many stains, but it may eliminate the shine of the silk tie. Make every attempt to protect the tie from damage. It will help protect your investment and keep your outfits looking sharp.

Makeup tips for brides and bridesmaids

F

ew events are more photographed than weddings. Needless to say, wedding participants, from brides and grooms to the couples’ parents, hope to look their best for the celebrations. Women often find that well applied cosmetics can enhance their beauty and help ensure they are picture-perfect. Very often the key to wedding makeup is simplicity. Brides want their best features enhanced and have the makeup add to their beauty rather than outshine it. Brides want guests to notice their faces and gowns and not their makeup. Here are some tips brides can employ in an effort to put their best faces forward. * Start out with well hydrated and moisturized skin. Apply a few layers of moisturizer, preferably one with an SPF if you will be spending time out in the sun. When the moisturizer is completely absorbed and dry, use a skin priming product that will help keep your foundation locked into place. * Match your foundation colour to your natural skin colour. When these colours don’t match, your face may look like it is a separate shade from your neck and decolletage. If you will be tanning, then find a shade that matches the tanned colour. A foundation that has slightly yellow undertones will even out redness on the face and look better in photos. Set the foundation with a matte powder.

* Apply concealer to red spots or undereye circles after the foundation. Aim for a creamy, emollient concealer for under the eyes. A peach colour that will contrast with the purple and blue tones of your eyelids. * Use an eyebrow pencil or powder to fill in your brows. This is a must for your wedding day and can really help to frame your eyes. Use small, light flicks of the pencil rather than long strokes to make the colour blend naturally. Use a brush to blend in further. Always go a shade or two lighter than your natural colour. * Complement your lips and eyes. Many brides like to play up their eyes on their wedding days. If you are going for a dramatic eye, opt for a more neutral lip, and vice versa. Neutral colours look best for weddings and will not appear dated in photos. Stick to subtle browns and taupes for universal flattery on most eye colours. * Apply liner before mascara, and blend it with a brush. Push the liner into the lashline to make lashes appear thicker. Use mascara to lengthen lashes. Place a makeup sponge behind your lashes when applying mascara so you don’t risk hitting your lids with the mascara wand. Waterproof mascara will hold up through tears of joy. * Be subtle with blush. Use subtle blush in a peach-pink colour to achieve that blushing bride

appearance. Smile and apply the blush only to the apples of your cheeks. * Choose a long-lasting lip colour that will hold up through kisses and smiles. Lip stains work very well, as they provide that hint of colour but wear well during the day.

How to stay energized throughout your wedding day

A

s enjoyable as a wedding can be, most brides and grooms who have already tied the knot can attest that a wedding is a long, often tiring day. To ensure you have enough energy follow these suggestions to remain energized. * Get a good night’s sleep the night before. Get to bed early the night before so you will get ample sleep and look rested. * Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast on the morning of your wedding, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will provide the initial burst of energy you need to get going, and the protein will keep you feeling full. * Stay hydrated. Although drinking a lot of water can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom -which can be cumbersome for brides wearing their gowns -- it is essential to stay hydrated. * Pack some snacks. The time between breakfast and the

cocktail hour of a wedding may be significant. In your wedding “survival” kit, be sure to pack some easy snacks to eat. Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of energy, and a banana can take the edge off of hunger pangs. * Don’t overdo it with caffeine. It may be tempting to lean on an energy drink or a super-size cup of coffee, but caffeine is only a temporary fix. After the effects of the caffeine wear off, you could find yourself more tired than before. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors may recharge your batteries. * Eat dinner. When family is beckoning and the photographer needs to get yet another pose, it is easy to skip dinner. Sitting down to dinner enables you to rest and absorb the atmosphere of the wedding. * Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the night. Alcoholic beverages may be flowing, but too many spirits can compromise your energy levels.

Items to pack on your honeymoon * Camera and accessories: Bring the camera for capturing all of your memories. But don’t forget to bring a charger and extra batteries. Pack an extra memory card unless you will be downloading the photos to a laptop or uploading them to a storage system. If you are traveling internationally, you will need an electrical converter to plug in any electronics. * Cash: You will need some cash even if you’re visiting an all-inclusive resort. In addition, take one or two major credit cards if you do not enjoy carrying too much cash. Only bring what you need because you don’t want to face the hassle of canceling cards or replacing the contents of your wallet should something go missing. * Clothing: Try to pack clothing that can be mixed and matched for a number of different looks. Solid-coloured pants, shorts or skirts paired with different tops is an easy way to achieve new looks. Remember to bring at least one dressier option in clothing for a night out at a special dinner. Bring along at least two swimsuits to have one available while the other is drying. * Comfort products: Items like insect repellent, sunburn soothing cream, aspirin, motion-sickness medication, and more may be very expensive at your destination, so bring these items from home.

* Eyeglasses/contacts: Bring your spare pair of contact lenses or eyeglasses in case your primary pair is lost or damaged.

* Fold-up travel bag: This extra bag can be used to tote items to and from the beach or while sightseeing. It also can be used to carry any souvenirs that may take up too much space in your luggage. * Hair products: The hotel may provide certain toiletries, but bring along travel-sized hair products to ensure your hair looks good during your trip. * Phone: Check with your mobile carrier to find out about roaming charges or if you will incur extra chargings making calls or accessing data at your destination. If so, you may be able to purchase prepaid phone cards or negotiate a temporary international rate. * Sunscreen: Pack some sunscreen so you don’t return home from your honeymoon with a bad sunburn. * Toiletries: Cotton swabs, razors, toothbrushes, shaving cream, and the like are items to bring from home, as they are likely to cost a lot more at your destination than they do at home. * Work-out clothing: If you plan on visiting the resort’s fitness center, pack a pair of athletic shoes and shorts or sweatpants. * Zipper-top bags: Bring along various sizes of storage bags to store wet swimsuits or for protecting and sorting different items.
