WELCOME F

to Fernie

ernie is not just a city in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Beautiful British Columbia. Fernie is a way of life. Did you know that we even have our own time? Ask a local what “Fernie time” means? They will be happy to tell you. The fabulous snow covered Rocky Mountains, and the amazing offerings that go hand in hand with that, such as cat skiing at Island Lake Resort, or with Fernie Wilderness Adventures, or the skiing and boarding at Fernie Alpine Resort may be what brought you here. Once you explore the town, and realize that this is only the tip of the “Wow this place is amazing!” iceberg, you will be booking your return trip. The rich history of Fernie is easily discovered at the Fernie Historical Museum. A visit here will walk you through the history of mining in the area, the great fires, as well as give you some background on the colourful locals. With a wide array of arts and culture throughout the downtown core, and entertainment ranging from trivia and pool tournaments to Indie films and jazz musicians, there is always something going on. A visit to Fernie is not complete without watching the hometown Ghostriders Junior B hockey team take to the ice. The passion of the team may only be second to that of the fans. Fernie is a city that prides itself on inclusivity. Everyone is welcome. Thank you for coming to visit, we are pleased you have chosen Fernie as a stopping point in your travels. Immerse yourself in our way of life, you will be glad you did. P.S. Remember Fernie time, and don’t forget to change your clocks!

Arts & Culture Exploring Fer nie through its Arts. Take a trip downtown, where you will see many shops offering a variety of locally made art.

F

ernie is well known for its incredible powder, endless trails, and world-class fly-fishing, but it’s also recognized by many for its extensive arts and entertainment scene. Eye of the Needle, located at 260 5th Street, showcases Sandra Barrett’s skill in felting, as well as her husband David’s skill in metalwork. The Arts Station, located at 601 1st Avenue, showcases a new artist every month, and hosts concerts throughout the winter season. Visit Theartsstation.com for a full list of concerts. Fernie is fortunate to have its own letterpress, one of only a few still left in Canada. Clawhammer Press is run by Michael Hepher, the creator of many unique posters and paintings. The Fernie Arts Co-op, located at 572 2nd Avenue, showcases the art of over 60 artists from around the Elk Valley. From handmade soap, to paintings, carvings, leatherwork and jewellery, it’s never a quick stop when you step into this shop. Stephanie’s Glass & Art Studio, located at 532 2nd Avenue, is home to the work of Stephanie Rogers, an accomplished artist in both glass etching and stained glass. Step into the world of local artist, Angela Morgan, located at 441 2nd Avenue. With a talent for painting people, and incorporating human emotion into everything she does,

it’s important not to miss the work of this internationally known painter. Kyle Hamilton Photography is located at 341c 3rd Ave, and features the work of local photographer, Kyle Hamilton. Aside from his wedding photography, for which he is well known, Hamilton has also undergone a large project called Faces of Fernie, which has allowed him to photography many Fernie locals. Brian Pollock, another local photographer, showcases his work at his studio, located at 532 2nd Avenue. Through his travels and exploration of Fernie’s backyard, the local has captured many stunning shots of the landscape. Polar Peek Books is a store full of wonder and adventure, with many books just waiting to be read. Located at 592 2nd Avenue, this is a onestop shop for any bookworm. Studio 562, located at 562b 2nd Avenue, is where Leanne Stothert translates her imagination onto canvas. Alongside her many paintings is the work of local luthier, Kim Kennedy, who specializes in string instruments. Visit Infinitea T-Bar & Boutique to snack on good food, drink a satisfying cup of tea, and explore the work of many local artists. If community sketch books and couches strike your fancy, this is the place to hang out on a rainy day. Photo: Free Press files

The Arts Station Tucked away one block from the main street, The Arts Station may seem small, but holds inside it a world of art, just waiting to be explored.

L

ocated on 1st Avenue, just beside Save On Foods, this little building that appears new, holds many years of history. In 1908, The Arts Station was constructed, but at the time served as the Canadian Pacific Railway station. Many were overjoyed when CPR donated land as well as the building to the City of Fernie for use as a community hub for art. In 1986, a new foundation was laid and the building was moved across the street away from the train tracks to where it now sits. 2017 marks the 27th year since its grand opening in 1990. With two art galleries, a 100-seat theatre, a workshop/meeting space, as well as craft, painting and pottery studios, there’s always something going on at The Arts Station. From felting, to sculptures, and from bluegrass musicians to comedy shows, The Arts Station is a thriving epicentre for all kinds of art, located in the downtown core. Whatever your taste in Photo: Free Press files

music, they are guaranteed to accommodate it as well. Walking down the main street on a sunlit evening, don’t be surprised if you see people dressed up, going to a nice dinner at the Blue Toque Diner, (located in The Arts Station) or to an art exhibition in the lobby, or a concert in the concert hall. If you’re catching up with a friend, enjoying a night out with family, or taking that special someone on a date, The Arts Station is somewhere that naturally sparks conversation as you explore its many wonders. The CPR building was donated with the purpose of creating a community hub for art, and The Arts Station has become exactly this. In Fernie, there is a thriving art community. With so many talented artists, a visit to The Arts Station may connect you with a new painting buddy or art class, where you can learn more about whatever sparks your creativity. First Tracks Defined as: Cutting through fresh snow before anyone else does, leaving behind your trail for all else to see.

S

tart your morning with a hearty breakfast to give you the energy you will need to slice through the powder. You won’t want to waste a minute of your time on the mountain thinking about how hungry you are. Being first up the hill, you will want to concentrate on the fresh brisk morning air as you prepare to lay down the first tracks of the day. With the untouched landscape before you, choose your line and leave it for all to see. There is something to be said for being the first to lay down tracks in the fresh powder. Heard there is a big storm coming?

10 Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Powderhounds at Fernie Alpine Resort may want to sign up for the First Tracks program the night before a powder day and get an hour of peace ripping up fresh tracks. Getting out ahead of the crowd and watching the sun come up over the Rocky Mountains is a spectacular experience. This combined with the solitude, the peace and tranquility is a “must do” at least once during your visit. Whether you choose Fernie Alpine Resort, Island Lake Lodge, or Fernie Wilderness Adventures to lay down the first tracks, it will truly be an experience you won’t soon forget! Photo: Mike McPhee

First Chair Only one thing fills the hearts of ski enthusiasts with more excitement than the thought of the first snowfall, and that is being first in line for the first chair of the season.

E

very year, locals get up before the crack of dawn to get in line for the first chair at Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR). The sound of the chairlift lurching into motion after months of hibernation is always met with the upbeat jabber of diehards waiting to ascend. This year, the resort tentatively opens on the first of December. By 8 a.m. about a hundred people will be waiting in line for the lift to open. Last year, Grace Brulotte and Greg (G-Money) Barrow made first chair. Barrow is a perennial first-chair rider, and camped out to secure his spot. It was the 68-year-old’s sixteenth consecutive year

riding first chair at FAR. What started out as a challenge has become a tradition for the local man, who owns Edge Of The World, an athletic clothing and snowboard shop. For 17 years in a row of bitter cold and rainy nasty nights camping out, Barrow has always managed to be one of the first four. According to the resort, the excitement surrounding opening day has existed for many years. In the eyes of many, it is almost a spiritual thing. Snow enthusiasts wait all summer for this moment; for them, this is the most exciting time of the year. Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Ski & Snowboard In Fernie HISTORY OF SKIING

Skiing began long before the first chairlift. This was true in Fer nie as well, with the first handle tow lift being installed in the 1950’s by the Fer nie Ski Club. The lift towed skiers up Mt. Proctor and picked up winter enthusiasts just behind the Fer nie Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre which is on the North East end of Fer nie. Since then Fer nie has celebrated more than 65 years of deep, snorkel skiing.

This area is groomed for XC skiing and winter cycling. The warming hut is open to the public and features an outdoor fire pit, enjoy! Thunder Meadows -This legendary cabin is what formed the Elk Valley Ski Touring Association, which has grown into the Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring Club. The hut itself was built in 1993, after two other huts either bur ned down or were decommissioned. In the 70s and 80s ski tourers regularly explored what is now Island Lake and Fer nie Alpine Resort in the Lizard Range. The original hut was well used and enhanced the potential and popularity for ski touring in the area. In order to reserve the cabin, one member of the Fer nie Trails and Ski Touring Club must be present in each user group, which costs $25 for a lifetime membership. Bookings can be made at the Guide’s Hut (671-2nd Ave, Downtown Fer nie, 250-423-3650) and is $100 per night plus $10.00 booking fee, for a maximum of 10 people. Bookings may be cancelled in the event of a HIGH Avalanche Hazard.

Tunnel Creek - Built in December 2011, a light-weight hut and outhouse were flown to 5,600 feet and onto their foundations making for the original hut. Four years later, in the fall of 2015, a large addition was completed on the original hut. This added day-use functionality with a wood stove and kitchen. The original cabin continues to be the sleeping area for booked guests. The hut is located in Tunnel Creek in the Lizard Range. The hut is booked through the Guide’s Hut (671-2nd Ave, Downtown Fer nie, 250-423-3650) and is $100 per night plus $10.00 booking fee, for a maximum of six people. Fernie Rules

F

ernie is a great place to visit, but there are a few things people should know about life in the mountain town.

Dogs:

Being an active and outdoors-loving town, Fernie also loves the furry four-legged friends who enjoy adventuring with us. However it should be noted that off-leash dogs are not permitted within city limits. There are two parks where dogs are allowed to run and venture off leash: at the north end of Annex park and on the south side of the Fernie Aquatic Centre. Dog owners are also required to pick up after their furry friends. Parking: Fernie gets ample amounts of snow – which also means it has to be plowed to clear the streets before the next day. This requires there to be parking restrictions at night so the roads can be properly cleared. There are signs marking when it is prohibited to park in a certain location. Parking regulations can be found on the City’s website, at Fernie.ca. Speed limits: While the highway through Fernie is regulated at 60 km/hour, everywhere

else in Fernie has a speed limit of 40 km/hour, unless it is posted otherwise. There are many residential areas in Fernie, which become wonderland playgrounds for children in the winter. Fat biking in Fernie

F

bikes are also a little heavier than their summer counterparts. Any trail can be a fat bike trail for the most hardcore winter biking enthusiast, however, the Fernie Mountain Bike Club has a volunteer groomer for trails around Ridgemont like Deadfall, Broken Derailer and Ecoterrorist. Lavers recommends that snow bikers dress in plenty of layers, just as you would for crosscountry skiing. Snow bikes can be rented in town at Gearhub, Fernie Alpine Resort and the Guide’s Hut. Snow biking can be a magical experience in the right conditions, especially on a crisp, bright evening. So get out your wool socks, hop on a bike, and explore Canada’s winter wonderland.

at bikes are getting a lot of traction in Fernie lately, with an explosion of winter biking across the city’s trails. “A poor ski day is often the best bike day,” says Heather Lavers, a director with the Fernie Mountain Bike Club. She says that snow bikes are a great addition to the plethora of winter activities available in Fernie, and require snow to be a little more packed down, as opposed to the light fluffy power that skiers love. It’s a winter favourite for mountain bikers in Fernie, that allows them to keep in shape for the summer season year round. Not all trails are easy to ride on a snow bike, and the big tires with depressed tire pressure make pedaling a little harder than in the summer. The

he Fernie Nordic Society continues to improve the trails and infrastructure available for nordic skiing in Fernie. This winter, FNS will maintain groomed trails at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (EVNC) and Fernie Golf and Country Club. What Makes Fernie Great? It is hard just to choose a few, however, these are some of our favourites: 1) Diversity Fernie is rich in diversity. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming. With a blend of cultures from around the world, and art, music and entertainment of every genre, the tapestry of Fernie is both unique and inspiring.

2) Dining

If you are looking for the best burger and pint after a hockey game, or award winning Indian food before, you will find it in Fernie. Offering dining experiences often reserved for large cities, Fernie serves it up right!

3) Arts & Culture

The level of talent of the artists in Fernie is apparent everywhere. A walk through the city core will lead you to many shops with one of a kind artwork. As you shop, be sure to check out the banners on 2nd Avenue, each showcasing a hometown artist.

4) Scenery

This never gets old! Situated in a valley,

30 Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, every season offers its own variety of spectacular. Winter however, offers the magic that can only come with snow-covered peaks glistening in the sunshine. Truly one of Fernie’s finest features.

5) Relaxed Atmosphere

You will feel like family the minute you arrive in Fernie. Whether you choose to stay on the hill or downtown, each has its own distinct community. The folks are friendly, and the atmosphere is laid back and easy. Everyone is welcomed and embraced. The only difficulty you might face is telling the locals from the visitors.

6) Proximity

Everything you could want to do, to see and to have is within 10 minutes from where you are when you are in Fernie. From the downtown core to the ski hill, to the closest burger, to the Aquatic Centre, to the grocery store or to the hockey game, all are within 10 minutes or less. Photo: Infinitea/Submitted

A Local’s Perfect Day With so many things to do in Fer nie, it’s hard to know where to start.

F

or Fernie local Abi Moore however, it’s crystal clear. After 11 years in the valley, she’s a pro when it comes to filling her days with adventure and exploration. 11 years ago, Moore came to Fernie, and spent one winter season here. Both the community and the snow were so good, she never left. As the season changes, and leaves start to fall, Moore looks forward to seeing how quickly the snow accumulates, and the town is transformed into a dreamscape. She loves anything to do with snow; from skiing to running, she loves it all. 7 a.m., the alarm goes off. A perfect day of adventuring outdoors starts out with a hearty egg, bacon and tea breakfast with Mike, her husband, and Jack Nacho (their adventure dog). Moore and Jack Nacho have clocked many miles on the trails together. If she does go out for breakfast, she would choose the Blue Toque. After a big breakfast, Moore would head straight up to Fernie Alpine Resort, to chase “an epic powder day”. Her go-to spot on the hill would either be Easter or Snake Ridge. If she feels like having a casual day, Moore would spend some time relaxing with a good

Photo: Submitted

coffee at Freshies. After shredding on the hill for a few hours, Moore would take a trip out to the Elk Valley Nordic Centre for some peaceful Nordic skiing in the wilderness. She loves this environment, and would encourage anyone to give it a try, especially families looking to spend some quality time together outside followed by a huddle around a fire in their warming hut. Short of equipment? No need to fret. Many shops downtown provide ski rentals. After a good day out in the mountains, Moore says she would top it off with a few drinks at the Fernie Brewing Company tasting room. As the sun goes down, Moore would see herself getting dinner out at Yamagoya or Nevados with some friends, followed by a drink at The Northern. If a live music concert or a film festival showing fell on that night, she would be there as well. While not adventuring in the hills, Moore works as the brand manager for Fernie Brewing Company. She also started Stag Leap Running with her husband. This has helped spark the growth of a year-round trail running community in Fernie. Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Griz Days Legend has it that a large man, with six-foot-wideshoulders and a massive musket— is the God of powder snow in Fer nie.

T

he Griz, locals say, was a small baby born in a bear’s cave on a bitter winter night in 1879. He fought that bear, so ferociously that the entire town heard the ruckus that evening. In the morning, it’s said that the infant was seen bounding from rock to rock on the mountain, wearing a bearskin coat.

32 Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

The Griz, the bearer of snow, drew his fame from an incident years later when skiers on the mountain saw him shoot his musket into the sky, drawing a luscious, fluffy powder snow, nothing like they’d ever seen before. Since that day, Fernie has been blessed with that special, magical fluffy power that everyone on the hill loves—and a week-long festival is held each year to honour the tale of the Griz. Photo: Kyle Hamilton

“Every time we get a big snow dump we say thank you to the Griz,” says Patty Vadnais, executive director of the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, and an organizer of Griz Days. Griz Days kick off in Fernie on March 2 with a launch event. Through the week, the Griz will be out and about touring schools and bombing around the ski hill. It’s a week paying tribute to the legend behind Fernie’s miraculous annual snowfalls, which on average reach about 30 feet each winter. Fernie Alpine Resort holds a dummy downhill, where handmade dummies on skis are launched down the chute, and fly off a ski jump before smashing into smithereens. The crowd goes wild at the high-flying carnage of each dummy, trying to get air off the jump in the most creative way. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to emulate the Griz in every way shape and form. The town’s main street becomes a sea of Griz for the annual parade, from fur hats, to bristly beards and a plethora of plaid prints. The Extreme Griz is an award for the man or woman who best embodies the legendary icon. In a series of skill-testing challenges, competitors wear classic mountain man attire, sport facial hair and even throw axes for their chance at holding one of Fernie’s most coveted titles. The daylong competition on March 4 starts in the morning with a pancake eating competition, there’s axe throwing, obstacle courses and a number of other challenges to test just how ‘Griz’ the competitors are. Even Fernie’s youngest can get into the spirit with the Baby Griz Crawl. Babies, dressed in Griz fashion will race, or crawl, rather, to the finish line at the Community Centre. Don’t forget to wear your Griz pin at the festivities; otherwise you can be thrown in Griz jail. Griz pins are sold in shops around town leading up to the festivities. Later in the evening, the Extreme Griz is named at the closing party in Station Square, where there is live music, dancing and beer gardens.

The Legend of the Griz According to local legend, Fer nie was not always blessed with an abundance of powder. It took a local man - a hero in these parts - to coax the snow out of the sky, gracing the region with an astounding annual snowfall of more than 10 metres. That man is known as the ‘Griz’.

T

he tale of the Griz begins in 1879, when the local legend was born in a ferocious grizzly bear’s den, prompting an epic battle between child and bear. Locals, fearful of the noise echoing through the valley, sent out a party to find the source of the ruckus. The search was unsuccessful, but a local man claimed he saw a boy, wearing a bear coat and hat. But none of the townfolk believed the man’s tale, and the sighting was almost forgotten. Many years later, the Griz was once again spotted. Backcountry skiers, ascending the peaks of the Lizard Range near Fernie Alpine Resort, spotted the Griz lumbering through a snowstorm and wielding an eight-foot musket.

34 Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

No longer a boy, the witnesses said the Griz was a man of average height, but with massive shoulders, six feet wide. The skiers watched in awe, as the Griz pointed his musket to the sky and fired off a shot – prompting the light snowstorm to become heavy, filling the sky with snow. In his honour and to celebrate the snow, the people of Fernie hold a festival every spring known as “Griz Days”. If these celebrations are pleasing to the Griz, he blankets the mountain with Fernie’s legendary powder. Join the celebrations this year from March 2 to 4. Be sure not to be caught without the traditional Griz pin. Photo: Mike McPhee

A

ll around winter fun for the little ones from outdoor fun, like skiing and snowshoeing, to kid-friendly attractions downtown and everything in between; there’s enough around town to keep the young ones engaged all day. Some of the most kid-friendly trails for winter hiking and snowshoeing are the Main Town Loop and the Coal Creek Heritage Trail. These pathways wind around the wilderness close to the city, with less vertical climb and are not as technically demanding. The TransCanada and Montane trails are also great for a laid-back, family adventure. Up at the Fernie Alpine Resort, District 5 students can ski for the day on professional development (Pro–D) days with the Winter Sports School. T

The Fernie Ghostriders

T

he Ghostriders are the Fernie Junior ‘B’ hometown ice hockey team. They are members of the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay Conference of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The team takes its name from the “Ghost Rider” which is a shadow that falls on Mount Hosmer (which appears on the team logo) and is predominantly visible during the summer months. The Ghostriders’ regular season begins in late September and continues through February. With amazing rivalry throughout the league, it is no wonder the hometown team has a strong and vocal fan base. Although each visiting team brings something different to the game, nothing compares to the rivalry between the hometown Ghostriders and the Kimberley Dynamiters. The raucous crowds pile in to see “the boys” and the spirit of the games is contagious. It is easy to become hooked on this team. With hard-hitting action and not a bad seat in the house, the competition is fierce. With GM and Coach Craig Mohr behind the

bench, the Ghostriders are contenders every year. They will again set their sights on the division championship title, which they captured in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons. Last season saw the team exit after the first round of the playoffs, having fallen to their biggest rivals, the Kimberley Dynamiters, in six games. their revenge this year. Off the ice, each member of the team is an ambassador and a good community citizen. Participation in a number of events in the community throughout the year, is all a part of being a Ghostrider. Events include Reach a Reader, Drive 4UR Community, weekly bingos, food bank donations and playing a key role in the Remembrance Day ceremonies. The team also supports the local charity Fernie Friends for Friend, by donning their specialty pink jerseys and ultimately auctioning them off to increase breast cancer awareness. You only have to look as far as the Park Place Pub to get dinner pre-game and pick up a halfprice ticket. A Ghostrider game will never disappoint. With grit and determination, this is a team that will play hard to the last whistle. Win or lose, the Ghostriders will give you lots to cheer about each and every game. If you haven’t had enough of an adrenalin rush on the hill during the day, a date with the Ghostriders will be sure to feed the need. See you there!

Scenery

If you think Fernie is beautiful in the winter, then prepare yourself to be awe-struck in the summer! Think green. Every shade, every tone, every type of green can be seen in Fernie. Surrounded by mountains, the early mornings are particularly spectacular, enjoying coffee on the downtown patios as the sleepy town awakens. This is truly an experience, and vastly different from winter, well worth the return trip.

Events

From the Fernie Mountain Market, in Rotary Park, where you can purchase fresh produce and locally made crafts to the Wednesday Socials at Station Square where a local band or group fills the evening air with their sweet sound, there is always something going on in Fernie during the summer. The streets are abuzz with folks taking advantage of the extended daylight. Try to time your visit to coincide with the Wapiti Music Festival!

Mountain Biking

The biking culture is evident in Fernie as cars become the exception and two wheels the norm. Everywhere you go, you will see people on bikes. The Fernie Trails Alliance works tirelessly to maintain the extensive network of trails throughout the area, as well as building new ones to keep it fresh. There are trails to suit every ability and every age, and usually the end of the trail will lead to a great spot to grab a refreshing beverage at the end of a great day’s ride. 8 REASONS to Come Back for Summer

Dining

Whether in winter or in summer, the food offered by Fernie’s restaurants, cafés and bistros is exceptional. What changes in summer however, is the ambience. Restaurants in the downtown core set up their patios on the street and offer diners the option of an outdoor dining experience. The deck at the Bridge Bistro overlooks the Elk River, and the patio at the Fernie Golf Club offers a view of the beautiful course as well as the majestic mountains that surround the city. Island Lake Lodge and Lost Boys at Fernie Alpine Resort both offer unparalleled views. The food is always fabulous in Fernie, in summer however, no matter what you order, it always comes with a great view.

Hiking

The extensive trail network in the Fernie area is well maintained, and caters to all ages and abilities. Choose a relaxed day hikes or nature walks, or if you want to cross it off your bucket list, choose the most epic of all - Heiko’s trail. With an elevation gain of 1200m over two mountain passes, this 21km trek will take between eight to 12 hours. A word of caution, don’t forget your bear spray. They like to hike as well.

Fishing

For a tranquil, peaceful day of fishing, the Elk

River is the “go to” spot in Fernie. If you are a novice or a seasoned veteran on the water, you will find that the Elk does not disappoint. Fernie offers great fishing shops for picking up your license, and the locals are happy to share what type of fly is working on any given day. You may have to search for the best hole, as we cannot guarantee they will share that, but then that is the thrill of the hunt.

Weather

Summer can bring a variety of weather with it. There is no certainty that it will always be sunny, but even on the few rainy days, Fernie has a freshness in the air that can only be found in the Rockies. Summer days can get into the 30 degree range, and yet the mountains allow the air to cool in the evenings, promising a good sleep. The long days provide ample time to enjoy everything Fernie has to offer.

The People

Fernie is a melting pot of people from all over the world most of whom, like you, once came for a visit. The friendly demeanor, and the welcoming atmosphere will soon have you walking down the street recognizing people, and greeting them by name. We are pleased you chose to visit us in the winter, and look forward to seeing you again. Hurry back, summer is just around the corner! Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

Snowmobiling Fer nie is rapidly becoming one of BC’s most popular sledding destinations.

W

ith over 150km of maintained snowmobile trails serving as gateways to five distinct riding areas, Fernie offers terrain for every kind of rider. The Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) has been the organized voice for sledding in the region since 1990 and provides grooming services, three backcountry warming cabins, trail maps and signage, staging area facilities, as well as several events through the season. Annual memberships are available for $175 (primary member), or $60 for each additional member in the household. Youth and Senior rates are available as well. Day passes can be purchased at staging areas or at the Fernie Visitors Center at $25 for an adult day pass or $10 for youth 14 and under. The FSA hosts several popular events through the season including Family Rides and BBQ’s (Dec 30 & Mar 3), Snowmobile Avalanche

Awareness Days (Jan 27), and Sled Fest which features the Thunderstruck Film premiere and Fundraiser Dinner (Feb 16), the Corbin Vintage Sled Ride and Fernie Snow Drags (both Feb 17). More information on grooming schedules and event details can be found on the FSA Website at Ferniesnowmobile.com. All sledders in B.C. are required to adhere to the Off-Road Vehicle act which stipulates that every snowmobile must have vehicle registration, insurance, and all riders must wear helmets. In addition, riders must be aware of special restrictions or closures which are detailed in the RDEK Access Management Maps. All backcountry users should be equipped with emergency equipment including an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe as well as a method of emergency communication such as a SPOT or inReach Device. There is no cell phone reception in most of Fernie’s riding areas. In Photo: Nicole Matei

the event of emergency, Search and Rescue can be activated by contacting the RCMP via 911. The Rolling Hills cabin is also equipped with an emergency radio. Leave a trip plan with friends or family, pack sufficient equipment to survive an unintended night outdoors, and request emergency assistance early to allow for sufficient day light hours to conduct a rescue if needed. A wide variety of snowmobile services are available in town. Sleds, equipment, and rentals are available at Ghostrider Motorsports. Elk Valley Snow Shepherds offers Guide Services and Avalanche Training. Weir Boondocking provides riding clinics and instruction. Avalanche airbag refills are available at Gearhub Sports. If it is your first-time riding in Fernie, there are many novice rides available to familiarize yourself with the terrain or suitable for those new to the sport. Both the Coal Creek and Morrissey staging areas offer approximately 16 km of groomed trail to reach either the Rolling Hills or Wranglers warming cabins. Both cabins offer open meadows nearby for riders to play in and can be linked together via various groomed loop route options.

Five distinct riding areas 1. Coal Creek (Coal Creek Staging Area, 16km to Rolling Hills Cabin) is best for families, novice riders, and those new to the area. Groomed trail to the cabins but also offers ample opportunity to dip off the trail into play zones. 2. Morrissey (Morrissey Staging Area 15km to Wranglers Cabin) is best for intermediate to advanced riders looking for great glade riding. Groomed trail to cabin and access to both the Rolling Hills and the Notch riding areas. 3. Hartley Lake (Hartley Staging Area, no cabin) is best for advanced riders with suitable skills and avalanche training. Groomed trail crosses several large avalanche paths and leads to amazing alpine riding zones behind the Three Sisters. Can connect via trail network to the Sparwood/Elkford riding areas. 4. Ram or Cabin Pass (Ram staging area 50km to Ram cabin) is best for advanced riders with suitable skills and avalanche training. Ungroomed trail leads riders into a variety of advanced riding terrain. 5. Corbin (Corbin Staging Area, no cabin) offers excellent intermediate to advanced riding. Short groomed trail leads into stunning alpine bowls on the B.C./AB border.

Ski Touring Gear Forecast Training Being in the Rocky Mountains, Fer nie and the surrounding area offers numerous slopes, bowls and ridges which provide for excellent ski touring. Submitted/Gord Ohm

F

or the unfamiliar, ski touring is a sport which utilises special gear in order to access ski terrain on foot. Specialized bindings and the use of ‘climbing skins’ allow a skier to find his own way to the top of a slope. Snowboarders use a similar technique with a ‘splitboard’ which turns into a pair of skis for

52 Winter 2017/2018 - Thefreepress.ca

the ascent. The cliché is ‘earn your turns’ and in fact the climb up is often as aesthetic and rewarding as the ski run down. You’ve probably heard the terms backcountry, slack country and side country, even front country. These terms relate to the remoteness and the degree of difficulty in accessing those slopes which are most likely to give you some Photo: Kyle Hamilton

fresh tracks. But the fact is ski touring involves having the right gear, knowing the avalanche forecast and being trained for winter travel in the backcountry. Riding beyond the ski area boundary at FAR is no exception. A group should be prepared with personal gear, rescue equipment, food and water even though ski patrollers and hot chocolate are geographically not far away. Choosing a place to ski tour will be strongly influenced by the avalanche danger. This reality can never be overlooked. There are avalanche forecasts and detailed summaries of snowpack and avalanche conditions available through avalanche.ca and the South Rockies Field Team on Facebook. The Mountain Information Network (MIN) also shares information provided by backcountry users and allows you to share your knowledge and experience with others. Additionally, the Fernie Alpine Resort’s ski patrol posts daily snow and weather data. The back country is the real deal. Your approach may involve a truck and a snowmobile before strapping on the skins and hiking into an area where you are truly on your own. A group may set an up-track with a goal to use it multiple times (yo-yo) or perhaps choose to traverse a larger zone, ski different aspects and have

301 Hwy 3 | 250-423-3002

Breakfast, Lunch, Apres Ski, Dinner, Dessert & Drinks

a better look around. These decisions can be made on the fly as you observe the snow conditions and develop questions about the ski quality and snow stability. Any group must be prepared to modify its objectives when the weather changes or when observations of the snow conditions differ from its expectations. The backcountry experience is complete when a group returns safely at the end of the day. It is essential to be well prepared with equipment and personal gear that will prepare a party to respond in cases of injury or other emergencies. One of these is ‘avalanches’ which may occur naturally or be triggered by a sled, a skier or snowboarder. Knowledge of and experience with the avalanche phenomenon is key to travelling safely in the backcountry. There are avalanche courses available in town privately and through the college. Many locals know the terrain in the Elk Valley and Flathead where the skiing can be epic. Ask around, chat with folks in the ski shops and on the lifts and most importantly, observe the snow and weather as winter arrives. The key to safe ski touring is good observation skills and the ability to make smart decisions many times throughout the day. If you plan to get out there have fun and be safe!
