Sparwood Secondary Graduation Elkford Secondary Graduation 2018 2018
Sparwood Secondary School Principal’s Message
I
t seems like we were just starting the year and here we are celebrating Sparwood Secondary School’s class of 2018, as they plan the next step of their future. At Sparwood Secondary we believe in lifelong learning, and every year our graduation class leaves with the knowledge that they have not only graduated but they are prepared to deal with change in this ever-changing world. Speaking as a parent myself, I want you to remember that friends will come and go, but family is forever. Your parents are happy to see you move on to the next challenge of your future, but you will always be their precious child. Speaking as a principal: You can Google for an answer, you can Google for a career, but you cannot Google to find out what’s truly in your heart. As Harriet Tubman said, “Every great dream, begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have in you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” I ask you to remember that there is NO future in believing something can’t be done. The future is making it happen. So live your life to the fullest and dare to dream! All of you have a great future in front of you. Lastly, I ask you to remember your roots. Be proud of where you came from. Congratulations and good luck in the future! Remember, please enjoy and be safe. Ladies and gentlemen! I present the class of 2018! Elkford Secondary Graduation 2018
Elkford Secondary School
Principal’s Message
T
he excitement of the graduation experience is hard to replicate. For the graduates of 2018, it’s a freeing and fun, yet frightening experience all at the same time. Whatever the reason, take the time to enjoy the moment. Take time to really look back at how far you have come and thank those that have assisted you in your accomplishment of graduation. Be proud of where you have come from and hopefully you will look back to many happy thoughts of your elementary and high school years.
We are witnessing a time of great challenge and great opportunity. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life. Learning from mistakes can increase a person’s ability to deal with future challenges leading to future successes. Life doesn’t always run on well-oiled super smooth paths. Setting high expectations for yourself means establishing a path to success. The most important thing is to be true to yourself. We wish you success and hope you will represent not only you and your family, but also Elkford Secondary school and our community, as you move on to the next stage of your life. On behalf of all the ESS staff, Kate Russell, our vice principal, and myself, we extend sincere congratulations to you, the class of 2018. Doug Bolander, Principal, Elkford Secondary School

Fernie Secondary School Principal’s Message
O
n behalf of Fernie Secondary School, staff and students, I wish to extend my congratulations to the Class of 2018.
As you view the pictures of the young men and women that make up this years’ class, I hope that you share with me both optimism and good wishes for the bright futures that await each graduate. The grad class of 2018 is a diverse and talented group. This year’s graduates have overcome many challenges; they have faced the inevitability of failure and have shown the perseverance necessary to continue to work hard to earn their successes. They arrive at graduation as a skilled and valuable group ready to tackle the next set of education, career and employment challenges.
It is my hope, graduates, that you recognize the community, family, friends and teachers that have helped you reach this milestone. As you move on to whatever life has in store for you, it is my sincerest wish that you do so with an understanding that kindness, hard work and determination will undoubtedly lead to success. Thank you to the Class of 2018 for your leadership and contributions to the Fernie Secondary Community. You have made us proud. Congratulations to Rylee Whitson, FSS Class of 2018 Valedictorian. Fernie Secondary Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday June 29, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the FSS Gymnasium. We will be celebrating the accomplishments of our students as well as publicly recognizing the generosity of our local community members who provide bursaries and scholarships for the betterment of our youth. We invite all to our celebration. Good Luck in the future, Graduates. Have a Safe and Fun Graduation!
Linda Christenson, Principal, Fernie Secondary School
Valedictorian’s Message
I
am Rylee Whitson, this year’s valedictorian and I am very proud to represent Fernie Secondary’s graduating class of 2018. We would not be here without the help of the teachers and staff. We would like to thank our family, friends and teachers for being by our side throughout the six years at FSS. We are now taking on a new adventure. All going our separate ways, but we will always cherish the memories we have made together. Please come down for this year’s special edition of a Grand March. It will be held in front of City Hall for the whole town to celebrate this year’s graduating class. Thank you again to all who have made this year’s graduation happen, and I wish everyone success in their future endeavors. Rylee Whitson, Valedictorian
Hats off to the Class of 2018 for a job well done! We wish you all the best as you begin the next chapter and work toward your future goals.

A Little Bit of History… The Tassel
Prior to a graduation ceremony, the tassel on a graduation cap is worn on the right. After receiving a diploma, it should be turned to the left side. This use of the tassel is a relatively new tradition, started about 40 to 50 years ago.
Cap & Gown Graduation Facts & Figures
for your learning pleasure!
The traditional graduation gown dates back to the 12th century when the first European universities were founded by clergy who wore the robes and hoods both to stay warm in the unheated buildings and to differentiate themselves from the townspeople. The hoods were eventually replaced with skull caps. The modern-day cap is called a mortarboard due to its resemblance to the tool used by masons to hold mortar.
See the Possibilities Congratulations to the class of 2018
Pomp & Circumstance
The traditional graduation march was composed by Sir Edward Elgar in 1901 England. When Elgar received an honorary doctorate from Yale University in 1905, the song was played and eventually became associated with graduation ceremonies.
Hats Off
The tradition of throwing graduation caps into the air originated at a U.S. Naval Academy graduation ceremony in 1912. When the graduates received their new officers’ hats, they threw their old midshipmen’s caps in the air to show their excitement.

The Fernie Academy Head of School Message
Valedictorian’s Message
I
n celebrating the convocation of our 70th graduate, we recognize the accomplishments of our eighth graduating class! Together they have learned, travelled and grown as they made their way to this important day. Proudly, they are sharing this day with our first TFA Honorary Graduate.
Working together, our community of students, their families and our teachers continue to prepare our graduates for the future and encourage lifelong learning. We have built a strong liberal educational experience emphasizing academics, athletics and arts – our busy graduates leave us with over 150 credits, exceeding the 80 required by the Ministry of Education. Academy students are challenged to learn and develop in venues beyond their regular classroom through public speaking, science fairs, debates of topical issues, international travel, local field trips, community involvement, athletic competitions, school plays, international academic competitions, volunteering and raising awareness about those less fortunate.
Our determined team of staff are committed to the complete education of every student. Their care and attention has laid the foundation for the future success of our graduates. I would like to thank and recognize all members of our team for their hard work and dedication to each individual student. This year marks our largest number of graduates who attended TFA from Kindergarten/Gr 1 to present. As our graduates approach the close of their time at the Academy, we trust that they feel confident and are well prepared to succeed in their chosen fields. We have challenged, nurtured and respected these individuals and have had the pleasure of watching them grow. We wish all the graduates of 2018, a happy, healthy and prosperous future. Jocelyn Sombrowski, Head of School, The Fernie Academy
TFA Mission Statement: Through active learning experiences, in partnership with the family and community, each student is encouraged to achieve their full potential in academics, arts and athletics.

I
started my journey at The Fernie Academy twelve years ago. Over the following years I learned confidence and leadership skills, how to think critically, public speak, and in doing so developed strong friendships with all of my classmates. The unique curriculum of The Fernie Academy cultivates endless opportunities for students, ranging from academic based trips to Peru, France, and Germany, to science fairs and public speaking competitions. Despite the rigorous academic course load, the social atmosphere fosters a friendly and positive experience for students. This school has become my home, and the faculty and my classmates have created a tight-knit family I am lucky to have been a part of. I thank the teachers and staff for always being friendly and supportive, yet constantly pushing us to reach our greatest potential. Your dedication, enthusiasm, and passion for teaching has shaped us into the people we are today. As the years have passed, it has become clear to me that my classmates are determined, talented, and creative individuals. I cannot recall a day where we haven’t joked, laughed, and smiled, even when we were swamped with homework or overwhelmed with exams. Your eagerness, kindness, and dedication to achieve success is inspiring, and I know that these wonderful traits, combined with the valuable skills we have learned in our time here, will allow you to overcome any obstacle you face in the future.
