Welcome to the 13th Biennial National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition
O
n behalf of Council and the City of Fernie it’s my privilege to extend a warm welcome to all participating teams from Canada and the USA. A sincere welcome goes also to the many associated individuals and to family members because without their constant support team members couldn’t work to achieve the level of knowledge of mine rescue that they do in order to enter this competition. Only the “best of the best” are here and we congratulate each and every member for their accomplishments. Mining is still the backbone of the economy for the Elk Valley, the province and the country as a whole. Although organized and greatly supported by the City of Fernie this event is the largest of this kind in the country and requires outside support. As chair of the organizing committee on behalf of the members and the City of Fernie I want to extend sincere gratitude to the many people and organizations that sponsor this unique competition.

s defending champions from 2015, Teck’s Elkview Operations is pleased to be back at the North Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition. Although this year’s edition of the Elkview team has some new faces, the team is excited and looking forward to making the Sparwood mine operation proud on Sept 9. Qualification for this year’s National Western Region Competition was accomplished by finishing second at the 2017 Provincials in Kimberley. Team Members: Captain - Mike Cleverly Vice-Captain - Matt Peterson Justin Surine Kyle Dalke Brad Filgate Carey Stephenson Brett Robertson Outside of their work duties, the team are all current or past members of their community volunteer fire department or search and rescue team and have devoted hundreds of hours of their own time to train for mine rescue competitions. Captain Mike Cleverly says, “We would like to give a big thank you to Teck, Elkview Operations management, Elkview Mine Rescue support staff, and all employees from Elkview who have supported us to get this far.”
Teck Greenhills Operations
T
he Bulldogs would like to thank everyone at Greenhills, and most importantly their families for the ongoing support this season. The Bulldogs qualified for this year’s Western Regionals by winning the 2016 Provincial Mine Rescue Competition held in Kimberley. The team reunited this year qualifying for Provincials at the EKMISA Zone competition in May. In June, they repeated their success of last year capturing the 2017 Provincial Championship, the Highest Nonaggregate Point Total Trophy, and EKMISA Best Rope Task Trophy. During the Provincial awards banquet this year, the competition team also humbly accepted the Chief Inspector’s Award for actions relating to a rescue performed in January of 2016. The team has put in countless hours over the last two years building up to the Western Regionals. The training, experience, effort, and commitment have developed their skills to be not only excellent competitors, but also leaders and mentors for all mine rescue members at Greenhills. On behalf of all BC Mine Rescue members, the Bulldogs wish everyone good luck in Fernie this September. C
ardinal River Operations is thrilled to be attending their second consecutive National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition. After placing first in the 2017 Alberta Provincials in Spruce Grove, the Hinton based team is excited to challenge themselves against world class mine rescue teams in September, including two other operations from Teck Coal. Cardinal River’s mine rescue program has built some serious momentum in the last couple of years, placing second overall at the 2015 Alberta Provincials before becoming the current reigning 2017 champions. Led by Shane Taylor, who is in his fourth year as Captain, the team also includes Jarod Miller (Vice Captain), Cody Inman, Christian Couture, Kevin Osborn, Gord Lyon, and Bert Lindquist. Coaches this year are LPO Cyndi Van Alphen who returns for her third year as a coach, and Tom Heidler, a veteran member with more than 30 years of service in the Mine Rescue Program. “Our team is excited to come back to compete in the National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition”, says Coach Van Alphen. “Last round, we were the unknowns and came in mid pack, this time, our goal is to finish first. We’re pumped because now we know what to expect, I feel confident that our Captain Shane and his team they will give the rest of the teams a run for their money. All in all, if our team has as much fun in Fernie that they did in Spruce Grove, I’ll call that our biggest success.” (Left to right): Mike Greenlay, Christian Couture, Chris Race (Vice Captain), Jarod Miller, Shane Taylor (Captain), Cody Inman and Kevin Osborne.

De Beers Canada - Gahcho Kué
T
he Gahcho Kué mine rescue team is comprised of five men and two women, selected from an Emergency Response Team comprised of 45 volunteers, of whom 38 are men and seven are women. This is the second year of competition for Gahcho Kué, and in June they were named best overall surface mine rescue team at the Northwest Territories/Nunavut Mine Rescue Competition, winning four competitions. At the mine, eight hour training sessions are held once a week and facilitated by the ERT Coordinators, Jonathan Gale and Richard Church. The mine rescue competition team is formed from ERT members who compete for a chance to represent the mine and improve their skills. Gahcho Kué is a fly-in fly-out, open pit diamond mine, located approximately 280 km northeast of Yellowknife; employing about 530 De Beers personnel and contractors. The mine is a joint venture between De Beers Canada (51 per cent - the Operator), and Mountain Province Diamonds (49 per cent). Following an official opening in September 2016, the mine achieved commercial production in March 2017.

T
he Black Thunder Mine Competition Team has been together for the last three years. One new member joined this year and together they have become a family. Not only do they train together but they also spend a large amount of time together on their days off. The team has experience their share of highs in competition and recent lows with the loss of their trainer and mentor to cancer. If you look on their sleeve you will see that they carry her with them wherever they go. They are passionate about what they do and enjoy learning new skills from other teams at competition. They are a lighthearted group who always smile and laugh, it is a part of who they are. We are very grateful for the skills we have learned and the ability to help others in need.

Dominion Diamond Ekati Surface
T
he Ekati mine has two teams in the competition, competing in both the Underground and Surface events. These members are part of a larger Emergency Response Team (ERT) comprised of over 80 members, who respond to all types of incidents onsite and in neighbouring jurisdictions. Both teams qualified for this year’s competition by placing first in the 2016 Northern Regionals. These are new teams, eager to make their mark and put their training to use. This dedication improves the response capabilities of our Ekati ERT. The Ekati mine is located approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, in an area of continuous permafrost. The site is accessible by air yearround and is accessed by an ice road for approximately six weeks of the year. Surface mining is completed in pits that are mined until the cone-shaped ore deposits, known as kimberlite, have been completely extracted. Where the kimberlite extends in a pipe shape further into the ground, underground mining is commenced. Mining of the kimberlite is done by drilling into the material and blasting. The ore is then loaded onto haul trucks and delivered to the process plant, where the ore is crushed and sorted using various processes to extract the diamonds.
