A Visit from St. Nicolas, Henry Livingstone, 1808
‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
T
was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads; And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winters nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow Gave the lustre of midday to objects below, When, what to my wandering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, With a little ol’ driver, so lively and quick I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, As he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer, now Vixen, On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall Now dash-away! Dash-away! Dash-away all! As dry leaves before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With a sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof As I drew in my head, and was turning around Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes - how they twinkled, his dimples how merry His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of his pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath He had a broad face and a round little belly That shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly He was chubby and plump a right jolly old elf I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk And laying a finger along side his nose And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like the down of a thistle But I heard him exclaim ere drove out of sight Happy Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight

Away in the Manger
way in a manger, No crib for His bed The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head
The cattle are lowing The poor Baby wakes But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me I pray
The stars in the bright sky Looked down where He lay The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay
I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky And stay by my side, ‘Til morning is nigh.
Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care And take us to heaven To live with Thee there

What Child Is This
What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? Chorus This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing: Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The babe, the son of Mary. Why lies he in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear: for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Chorus So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, Come, peasant, king, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone him. Chorus
O
O Come All Ye Faithful
come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, Come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels; Chorus O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal, Lo, he shuns not the Virgin’s womb; Son of the Father, begotten, Not created; Chorus

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; Chorus See how the shepherds,
summoned to His cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; Chorus Child, for us sinners poor And in the manger, We would embrace Thee, With love and awe; Who would not love Thee, Loving us so dearly? Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning; Jesus, to Thee be glory given; Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing Chorus

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
J
olly Old Saint Nicholas Jolly old Saint Nicholas, Lean your ear this way! Don’t you tell a single soul What I’m going to say: Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now, you dear old man Whisper what you’ll bring to me; Tell me if you can. When the clock is striking twelve, When I’m fast asleep Down the chimney, broad and black, With your pack you’ll
creep All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row Mine will be the shortest one, You’ll be sure to know Bobby wants a pair of skates, Suzy wants a sled Nellie wants a picture book, yellow, blue, and red Now I think I’ll leave to you What to give the rest Choose for me, dear Santa Claus; You will know the best.
May your home be filled with joy

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
I
t came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,
From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled,

And still their heavenly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er its babel sounds The blessèd angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The love-song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing. And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, And hear the angels sing! For lo!, the days are hastening on, By prophet bards foretold, When with the ever-circling years Comes round the age of gold When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.

Winter Wonderland
leigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane snow is glisting, A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird, He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.
As we dream by the fire, To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown, We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the kids will come and knock him down.
In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown, He’ll say, “Are you married?” We’ll say, “No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town.”
When it snows ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling, We’ll frolic and play, The Eskimo way,
Later on we’ll conspire,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

The First Noel
he first Noel, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
Let It Snow Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping; The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. When we finally say good night, How I’ll hate going out in the storm; But if you really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And my dear, we’re still goodbyeing, But as long as you love me so. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star Shining in the East, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. This star drew night to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.
Then entered in those wise men three, And by the light of that same star, Full reverently upon their knee; And offered there in his presence, Three wise men came from Their gold, and myrrh, country far; To seek for a King was their intent, and frankincense. And to follow the star wherever it Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. went.
