I
f this question has been sending you into a panic, you can now relax. Whether you’re planning a lavish white wedding or an intimate ceremony atop a mountain, the East Kootenay is the perfect location for you. Churches: For many, weddings are synonymous with churches, securing their title as the number one place to walk down the aisle. The communities of the East Kootenay are home to houses for a variety of denominations and will be able to provide a ceremony that satisfies your spiritual side. A traditional church wedding will add an air of importance and reverence to your big day. Golf Courses: The contrast of manicured greens against a mountain background provide a stunning setting for wedding photos, not to mention the freedom of indoor and outdoor

spaces that clubhouses offer for your reception. Combined with expert staff and plenty of local connections, choose one of the region’s several golf courses as the ideal location for your wedding.
Resorts: The resorts of the East Kootenay are renowned tourist destinations, but even locals will feel like they’re on vacation with a wedding at one of these famous locations. Consider
the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino between Cranbrook and Kimberley, or the Elk Valley’s Fernie Alpine Resort. The scenery and facilities at either of these destinations is secondto-none and available all year round for a ceremony in any season. Restaurants and reception rooms: Restaurants and hotels are experienced wedding hosts and offer a range of culinary options and venue spaces. In addition to an amazing menu, look for an atmosphere that is warming and conducive to great conversations. In Fernie, the Best Western Plus Mountain Lodge and in Sparwood, Causeway Bay Hotel have all the facilities to suit any sized function. Frank’s Steak & Schnitzel Haus in Cranbrook offers good old-fashioned comfort food to satisfy your guests or indulge in options like maple and espresso glazed buffalo at the Cedar House. Bon appetit!

How to organize wedding planning

Alpine Lodge FERNIE, BC For a beautiful, intimate mountain wedding.

eddings require a lot of planning. Couples hosting large weddings or even intimate gatherings can easily be overwhelmed by the amount of planning they must do to make their weddings into events they will remember and cherish forever. Staying organized when planning a wedding is a tall task. It’s wise to expect the unexpected when organizing a wedding, and the more organized couples can stay, the more fun they can have during the planning process and the better they can handle the unforeseen circumstances that are bound to arise in the
months leading up to the wedding. • Create separate filing systems for each aspect of the wedding. Rather than maintaining one massive file with information about various elements of the wedding, maintain separate files for each aspect of the wedding. For example, when receiving quotes from prospective florists, keep all florist quotes in a single folder that remains separate from information about other parts of the wedding. Separate filing systems make it easier to find quotes and contracts when you need to, saving you the trouble of digging through pages upon pages of quotes, notes and other information you store. • Maintain a spending spreadsheet. Many couples plan weddings on carefully constructed budgets. But couples can easily exceed those budgets if they are not routinely monitoring and recording their spending or the spending they are committing to upon signing contracts with vendors. Create a spending spreadsheet that allows you to track how much you have already spent, how much you are committed to spending and when wedding bills are due. Update the spreadsheet whenever you write a cheque or sign a new contract, and periodically examine the sheet so you can make sure you are still on track to remain at or under budget. • Hire a planner. If wedding planning is proving especially overwhelming or if you simply don’t have time to do all the legwork necessary to plan on your own, hire a wedding planner. Wedding planners are invaluable resources who can help couples quickly connect with vendors who can meet their needs while staying within their budgets. Planners also can advise couples on ways to save money and which areas of the wedding should not be bargain basement. Couples planning destination weddings should inquire about resortaffiliated wedding planners before choosing a venue to host their ceremonies and/or guests. • Start early. According to The Knot 2015 Real Weddings Study, the average length of engagement for couples who wed in 2015 was 14.5 months. That means today’s average couples have more than a year to plan their nuptials. By starting their wedding planning early, couples can avoid having to plan everything at the last minute, which can be hectic, nerve-wracking and unorganized. In addition, starting early affords couples more time to find great deals and stay within their budgets. Staying organized when planning a wedding can make for more enjoyable planning and a happier wedding day.

Top 20 essentials for a successful wedding
S
o the question has been popped and joyfully accepted. Now you both have to start thinking about what needs to get done to make sure this special day runs smoothly and that nothing is forgotten. Dear brides and grooms, here are the top 20 essentials to consider for a memorable wedding. 1. Guest list. This is your day, so only invite the people with whom you actually want to share the moment. 2. Invitations. Would you prefer to send out lavish printed invitations or simple virtual invitations? Whatever your choice, send them out as soon as you’ve set the date.
3. Wedding planner. This service can take quite a load off your shoulders so you can focus on the important stuff. 4. Groomsmen and bridesmaids. Choose people you like and who aren’t afraid of being in the spotlight. 5. Celebrant. Be sure that the person you choose to unite your destinies will allow you to personalize the ceremony.
6. Location of the ceremony. Do you prefer a church, city hall or a beach? 7. Reception venue. You can opt for a reception hall in the country, a posh hotel or simply a family member’s home. 8. Flowers. Choose a bouquet that goes with the bride’s outfit — and choose one that all the single women will try to catch when the time comes. 9. Rental equipment. For the sound system, tableware and even the tables and chairs, opt for a local company with a trustworthy reputation. 10. Gift registry. By making this virtual document available to your guests, you won’t receive the same gift twice. 11. Music and entertainment. Choose an experienced DJ who will take into account your needs and preferences. 12. Photographer. Look through a photographer’s portfolio and ask for references before choosing the person who will immortalize this special event. 13. Cameraman. Watch videos made for previous clients before making your choice. 14. The cake. Visit a few bakeries to find a cake that makes your mouth water and has a baker skilled in cake decorating. 15. Wedding favours. Don’t forget to give your guests a personalized memento of your wedding. 16. Transportation. Would you prefer a limousine, a sports car or a vintage car? Or maybe even a horse and carriage? 17. Rings. Be sure to visit more than one jewelry store before making your choices, and don’t skimp on the quality of these precious symbols. 18. The groom’s suit. The future husband should choose an outfit that shows him off to advantage without eclipsing the star of the day. 19. The bride’s outfit. This is the most beautiful day of your life, so you have a legitimate right to the dress of your dreams — and shoes and jewelry and veil. 20. Hair and makeup. The bride should take this part of her preparations very seriously. Just think about all the photos that are going to be taken throughout the day!

f you feel your stress level rising at the mere thought of your upcoming wedding, imagine what it will be like on the big day. (Saviour for strapless dresses and hems.) • Pre-moistened wipes, deodorant, and lip balm • A toothbrush, toothpaste, and breath mints (avoid chewing gum, especially during the photo session!) • Transparent nail polish, nail file, and nail polish remover • An extra pair of glasses or contact lenses, including the case and lens solution. • Tampons • Curling iron, hair straightener, or hot rollers • Bobby pins (to control rebellious curls and to affix your veil). • White and black thread, sewing needles, safety pins, and a pair of scissors (for clothing repairs) • Iron and ironing board • Extra pair of pantyhose • Pair of ballerina shoes (for the end of the evening when your feet ache after all that dancing!) • Band-aids. Not only for injuries, band-aids can also help with uncomfortable shoes. • Tissues as well as acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for unexpected headaches) • Comfortable clothing to wear while gettng ready. • Finally, because you know just what your man is capable of, include a pair of black socks in case he had the bright idea of wearing white sports socks with his tux! K
urt Saari and Storm Largue might never have found each other if it weren’t for a fear of fish. It was the summer of 2009. The two happened to be out swimming on Lake Koocanusa when suddenly Kurt heard shouts and screams on the warm afternoon breeze. “Storm’s friend is terrified of fish,” explained Kurt. “And she saw a fish so she swam away.” Unfazed, Storm kept on swimming and eventually stopped to rest on a log floating in the middle of the lake. Kurt swam over to see if everything was okay and the two struck up a conversation; he in is swim trunks, she in her red bikini. They began dating but neither was sure if this was a serious relationship. “I wasn’t quite ready to call Kurt my boyfriend and he would ask me, fairly often, ‘am I your boyfriend yet? What’s going on here? Are we together?’” said Storm. “I needed clarification of our relationship status,” explained Kurt. But one day Storm decided Kurt was her man so she bought him a toothbrush and wrote ‘boyfriend’ on it. “The toothbrush was great confirmation for me,” said Kurt. Both Kurt, 35, and Storm, 29, had been living in Fernie for several years before they met. Kurt was born in Ontario, raised in the West Kootenays and was living in Toronto working a career in finance when the 2008 financial crisis forced him out of the industry. While weighing his options, a friend suggested he visit him in Fernie and go skiing for a few months - he ended up staying. Storm was a South African living in Australia. In 2007 she and a friend decided they would travel to Canada. Her friend decided not to make the journey at the last minute but that didn’t stop Storm from hopping a plane to Calgary followed by a Greyhound bus to Fernie. “I hadn’t seen snow before,” she said. Once she got here, she stayed. “There’s something about Fernie,” she said. “The people, the lifestyle, the vibe in town that makes you feel like you’re a part of something. Within my first week I realized this was exactly where I needed to be.” Fast forward to 2016. Kurt and Storm have launched a business. They are the owners and operators of Nevados, a popular Latin American tapas and tequila lounge in downtown Fernie. They are saving up to buy a house, they have a dog, but they’re not married. Then in June, Storm donned that same red bikini from their meeting on Lake Koocanusa and took Kurt on a paddle boarding adventure on Christina Lake.
“I got down on one knee on a paddleboard, which is not easy,” said Storm. “I gave him a toothbrush that said ‘husband?’” Kurt said yes. “It kind of blew my mind a little bit. I knew you had it in you to do something like that,” Kurt said to Storm. Their nuptials took place on October 7, 2016, four months to the day after the proposal, at an intimate ceremony at the Elk River Lodge. The couple didn’t have a massive budget for a big wedding so they chose to do it small and invited about 20 members of their immediate families and close friends, said Storm. “I feel if you leave it too long, there’s too much time for things to get crazy and all of a sudden you have this crazy big wedding which we didn’t want,” she said. “We had more time to spend with the close people,” added Kurt. “I didn’t feel like I was stuck in the formalities of having to talk to a hundred people. I got good personal time with each person at our wedding. That was really nice.” Their original plan was to be married in a field, but in the mountains the weather can be unpredictable. Luckily they were prepared when the temperature dropped and it began to snow. They moved the ceremony into a humble old barn dressed in romantic wedding decor. It was the perfect setting for the nature-loving couple. After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed brunch, speeches and a relaxing afternoon. That night the wedding party gathered for cocktail hour at Nevados before moving on to The Northern Bar and Stage where they danced the night away to the sounds of 1980s cover band Val Kilmer and the New Coke. Almost all of their wedding needs were locally sourced. “We have such great stuff in town, why wouldn’t we use it?” said Storm. Mugshots Cafe supplied the coffee for the brunch while The Valley Social supplied baked goods. Beanpod Chocolate did their wedding favours, which were little camping mugs topped with coffee beans. The all-star pair of Amie Bradsell, Nevados’ head chef, and Kayleigh Kilbey, head chef at Cirque Restaurant Bar, were in the kitchen. “Our priority is to sustain our community,” said Kurt. “We’re very lucky to have all these options in such a small place and I think that’s because there are enough people who understand that the local businesses are important.” Their clever planning allowed the pair to save for a home, which they recently purchased, and experience a meaningful day with the people they care about. “It was perfect,” said Storm. “It was kind of like a party that finally needed to happen,” added Kurt.

Making it legal in British Columbia Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage license, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage license in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No license is issued until the courts finalize a divorce; normally 31 days after the Courts issue the divorce decree. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a religious
representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the
marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not
result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Treat guests to personalized vows
C
ouples who choose to write their own wedding vows recognize how special such personal gestures are. Writing one’s own vows can impart a personalized and special touch to the ceremony. But as anyone who has stared down a blank piece of paper or blinking cursor can attest, a case of writer’s block may encourage couples to abandon the idea of writing their own vows. Writing vows can be nerve-wracking. Many couples are unaccustomed to speaking in front of crowds, and then there is the challenge of turning lifealtering feelings into language that will appeal to the masses. But couples struggling with their vows need not throw in the vow-writing towel. With some practice and guidance, anyone can write cherished vows that will be remembered for all of the right reasons for years to come. Skip the schtick. Jokes may pop up in speeches throughout the evening, but wedding vows can be your chance to truly speak from the heart. Humour may
come across as insincerity. Rather, list the words that describe your feelings for your future spouse, and build on that. Tell a story. If you need inspiration, look to a moment in your relationship when you really knew this was the person with whom you wanted to share your life. Relay the story, but keep it brief. Try to be as specific as possible, and recognize that it’s acceptable to be playful with your words. When it’s really coming from the heart and not the head, you’ll know it. Borrow from traditional words. Take traditional vows and tweak them to make them your own. This works especially well for those who have trouble getting started or are unsure of which format to follow. Incorporate key words, such as “partners,” “love,” “friends,” “joy,” and “forever.” Be sure the officiant is on board. Depending on the type of ceremony, the officiant may have final say over what can or cannot be included in your vows. Religious ceremonies, for example, may be limited to certain
Kyle Hamilton Photography
scripture readings and traditional vows. Before you devote any time to writing vows, ensure that it’s alright to include them. Otherwise, save personalized sentiments for a special toast at the wedding reception. Decide on a mutual structure for the vows. If you and your spouse will not be writing the vows together, agree on a format that you both will follow. Otherwise, you might be writing about your unending love, and he or she may be promising to keep updated on favourite sports teams or television programs. You want the tone and style of the vows to be cohesive.
Dig deeper. Look into the future and project how you hope your life to be in 10 or 20 years. Explain all of the reasons you want to be together for the duration. Read the vows several times. Read over your work and make sure the language is clear and there are no glaring errors. It may take a few versions to get the final version right where you want it. Get a second opinion. Ask someone you trust to listen to the vows and offer feedback. This needs to be a person who will be honest and not just tell you what you want to hear. Personalized vows can add an extra special touch to wedding ceremonies.

Tips for trimming the wedding guest list
W
eddings are a time to celebrate, and many couples hope to invite as many people as possible to share their excitement. A study by researchers found that couples who invite at least 150 guests to the wedding may have happier marriages. The study examined 418 people who were single at the beginning of the study and married five years later. It found that 47 per cent of those people who had gotten married in front of at least 150 guests had “high-quality marriages,” while those with 50 or fewer guests fell short. While guests make weddings more enjoyable, and may increase the propensity to enjoy a more successful marriage, couples must be practical and consider their wedding budgets when creating their guest lists. The average wedding includes 120 guests, according to a Newlywed Survey released by WeddingWire. Couples who are finding it difficult to create and pare down their guest lists can employ the following tips.
Kyle Hamilton Photography
Create initial lists. When jotting down potential guests’ names, write down everyone you want to invite, regardless of budget. Then list the must-have guests for the wedding. This should include the family and friends with whom you interact on a regular basis. Create a separate column for guests who don’t make the must-have list. Separate friends from friends’ friends. If you don’t see people outside of events set up by mutual friends, you should not feel obligated

to invite those people to the wedding. They are more likely friends of your friends and not your close friends. Know the guest list ceiling. Catering halls or reception rooms often can only accommodate a certain number of people. Know this number before making a final list. The limits of the space may serve as the catalyst for trimming the guest list. Consider coworkers carefully. Think about whether you’d still be friends with your coworkers if the company
dissolved tomorrow. If not, you should not feel obligated to invite them. Have we met? If you don’t remember interacting with a person (your parent’s long lost friend from high school) or the person has never met your significant other, then they probably can be cut. If parents insist on inviting someone you barely remember, they should help defray the costs. Cut out the kids. Even though children’s dinner costs may be lower than adults’, inviting children can significantly increase the guest list. A no-child policy at the reception can save money. Avoid uncomfortable situations. Unless you have remained particularly close, keep former boyfriends and girlfriends off of the guest list. Ask for an unbiased opinion. Give the editing pen to someone else if you cannot make a decision. This person may help weed out extraneous guests.

There’s no getting around the fact that weddings can be expensive. For many couples they’re the first of the largest expenses they will make together. It’s quite easy for individuals to go over budget on their wedding day if they do not carefully keep track of what has been spent on all the elements of the big day. Use this budget planner to keep all of the costs associated with the wedding in one easy-to-manage place.

Weddings and nontraditional families
F
amilies come in all shapes and sizes. During special events — particularly those steeped in tradition, such as weddings — blended families may have to employ certain tactics to ensure the events go off without a hitch. When planning their weddings, couples must give consideration to the needs of their families. Even though a wedding is about the union of two people, oftentimes couples engaged to be married must contend with the politics of divorce or other familial issues. This includes if and how to incorporate stepparents and stepsiblings into the ceremony and celebration. There are no traditional rules regarding how to handle blended families, so brides - and groomsto-be can customize their decisions based on their own unique situations. • Consider stepparents and stepsiblings VIPs. Brides and grooms who are not particularly close to their stepfamilies still have to recognize the role they play in
the family dynamics. These people are still family, so respect and courtesy should be offered. If there is any lingering animosity, extend the olive branch on this day and try not to let anyone be made to feel as if they are unimportant. A simple announcement of who stepparents are at the wedding reception or inclusion of their names on wedding itineraries can help smooth over any potential bumps. • Put others’ needs before your own. While the wedding may be about you and your future spouse, you must consider the feelings of others. Biological parents and stepparents may act defensively if they feel uncomfortable or hurt, and that can create an air of negativity to the day. Try to avoid this by considering potential areas of conflict. For example, mothers might be hurt if their ex-husbands’ new girlfriends are asked to be in a group family photo. Instead, select separate times to have everyone included. Remember to give parents and
stepparents priority seating as well, and they each should be seated next to someone they love and someone with whom they can converse comfortably. • Recognize that some families break the mold. Recently, a father made waves on the Internet when a video of him pulling the bride’s stepfather up to assist in walking her down the aisle went viral. This was a wonderful image of families making it work despite their differences or the awkwardness that can result when brides or grooms have parents and stepparents in attendance. Although this scenario might not play out for all, find ways to impart a special touch, especially if you’re close to both your biological parents and your stepparents. For example, your biological father may walk you down the aisle, while your stepfather may enjoy the first dance. • Order flowers and gifts for all. Purchase flowers and wedding party gifts for all of the special people in your lives, including your stepfamily.

or Brent Hornquist and Vanessa Stamler, an unlikely childhood friendship turned into an everlasting partnership. Both born and raised in Fernie, B.C., the two youth attended the same schools, but observed each other from a distance. Brent considered himself the ‘geekier’ kid growing up, and treasured any moments of attention from Vanessa. “I knew Vanessa, she was always nice to me growing up,” said Brent, “But the people that would pick on me, they were the people she hung out with. “If I got a stare or a wave, I felt pretty lucky,” he added with a laugh. Life began to take off for Brent, and he was drawn away from Fernie for 16 years. Becoming tired of the big city, he moved back to Fernie and he believes this was the best decision he ever made. Vanessa left Fernie to attend nursing school, and returned shortly after to work at the hospital. The two reconnected again in their hometown through a mutual friend. Vanessa found out through an overheard conversation that Brent had been speaking highly of her; a fondness that never left him even through his years away from home. Finding out that she knew, Brent was embarrassed at first. He decided, nevertheless, to try and get in contact with her. Without Vanessa’s number, he found himself in a pickle. Set on not giving up, he had to think fast. “I thought I’d do what all the young kids are doing, so I Facebooked her,” he said with a coy smile. Asking Vanessa out on a dinner date, she responded with, “I’d love to, but I’m going to Disneyland.” Discouraged, Brent agreed to wait for her return. What felt to him like a century passed, until the phone rang two weeks later and the now-matured high-school classmates arranged a first date. Four years ago on September 7th at 9:30 a.m., the two met at Mugshots for the first time in years. Time went on, and Brent came to live with Vanessa and her twins. A joke was made over the course of the next two years about proposing, and it got to the point where Vanessa’s daughter would leave candy rings on Brent’s spot at the table, as well as under his pillow. When the time came for the big moment, Vanessa didn’t believe it was real. “When he did propose, I thought it was a joke!” said Vanessa. “But I did say yes,” she added, glancing at Brent with a smile. Vanessa Stamler and Brent Hornquist were married on September 19, 2016 at the Rusty Edge Restaurant, at Fernie Alpine Resort.
A day of matrimony was met with a torrential downpour, but the two newlyweds didn’t let it get them down. If each could describe their wedding day in one word it would be, “Magical,” and, “Phenomenal.” Originally planning to get married on the large patio outside the Rusty Edge, the ceremony had to be changed at the last minute. Despite this, the dinner arrangements were flawless, and the night continued on. Before the dining was a beautiful ceremony. Next, a balloon release was made in memory of Vanessa’s grandfather, who passed five months prior to the wedding. Flowers were given to both Brent and Vanessa’s mothers, thanking them for everything they have done and continue to do. Last but not least came the conjoining of families. To represent the unity between Brent, Vanessa, and her twins, each poured a different colour of sand into a large jar, which remains in their living room to this day. “It was just such an awesome night,” said Vanessa. “I wouldn’t have one complaint.” Kimberley-based Krevan Photography took on the challenge of photographing in the rain, much to the enjoyment of both parties. “We were all soaked, but we had so much fun!” said Vanessa, who praised the professionalism and skill of the photographers. Brent and Vanessa believe that extensive pre-planning played a large role in the success of their special day. In addition, making their own decorations saved them a huge cost, and shopping around ensured that they got the best bang for their buck. Saving for over a year also relieved the burden of postwedding debt. The biggest word of advice from the newlyweds would be to, “Make it about you. Don’t be stressed out, just make it your day. “Choose the things that you want, choose the foods you like. Make sure the people are coming there for the right reasons,” added Vanessa. As with any couple planning to spend the rest of their lives together, Brent and Vanessa previously agreed on several things that continue to help maintain a healthy relationship. “Every couple has their fights, but we made a promise to each other that we would never go to bed mad at each other,” said Brent. “And we’ve kept that promise.” “I think we have that unconditional love,” added Vanessa with a smile. “We’re not always going to be on our best behaviour, but at the end of the day we have each other.”

Information to include on your wedding website
P
ersonal websites are an invaluable resource for couples planning their weddings. Wedding websites provide a great platform for couples to share all sorts of information regarding their big day, making them an essential element of modern-day wedding planning. Wedding websites need not feature all the bells and whistles of more permanent sites. But while there are specific guidelines governing what to include on wedding websites, couples should be mindful to share certain information to ensure their guests stay in the know about the pending nuptials. The participants Wedding websites can be used to inform guests about the couple getting married as well as the various participants, such as the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Extended families of the bride - and groom-to-be may not know much about their loved one’s betrothed, and the wedding website can help guests get to know
both people getting married. Include information about the bridal party as well. The big day Invitations were once the go-to source for information about couples’ wedding ceremonies and receptions. But unlike invitations, websites won’t get lost around the house or in the mail, making them more reliable resources for guests. Include all the pertinent details about the big day on your website, including the time and location of both the ceremony and the reception. Include directions to and from the venue (both the ceremony and reception venues if they will be held at separate locations), and include a Google maps feature if possible. RSVP info Save guests the trouble of returning RSVP cards by including an RSVP section on your website. Establish an email address solely for RSVPs, and check it regularly so you can update who is and who is not attending your wedding. Couples can save the
expense of postage by requesting that guests RSVP exclusively through their websites. Just be sure to include that request with the invitations if you still plan to mail more traditional invites. Accommodations Many couples arrange for discounted hotel rooms for their out-of-town wedding guests. Include this information on your wedding website, and aim to include at least two hotels where guests can
register under your party and receive discounted lodging. In addition to the hotels you arrange a deal with, include some extra information about other lodging options in the area. Out-of-town guests will appreciate having as many options as possible, and couples providing that information save guests the trouble of researching certain neighbourhoods to determine if they are safe or close to the ceremony and reception sites.

Get your guests involved Beat wedding-goer boredom blues with post-ceremony and pre-reception activities.
W
hat makes a wedding memorable and special is the people. The bride and groom, and the wedding party of course, but it’s being surrounded by close friends and family that will make the day perfect. But being a wedding guest can sometimes be a bit unexciting. For that empty time between the ceremony and reception, guests are often left to fend for themselves. This can lead to having too many drinks during cocktail hour, or even worse, boredom! Make the effort to give the people who mean enough to you to score an invite to the big event something to do during those inevitable lulls in the action. In the East Kootenay, the beautiful views provided by the great outdoors can often be incorporated into a wedding-goer activity. Send your guests on a quick and scenic walk – keep in mind their wedding attire won’t likely accommodate more than a stroll. Set up stations through trees or a field where they can answer fun trivia questions about the bride and groom. Send them out with a map, and be sure to include a few fun party favours to help inspire them. Compile all of the guests’ answer cards towards the end of the night for a great guest prize, or simply read out the answers for fun.

*Set Up an Activity Area For an active group of little ones, consider creating an area for activities like pingpong, air hockey, basketball, hula hoops or jump ropes.
• Why not use a Wishing Tree? These are a great idea and a fun add-on or alternative to a guest book. You can make them from twigs which are arranged in clear vases, perhaps spray them gold or silver, or the colour of your wedding theme. Use lovely luggage labels printed with wishes that your guests can write their own special wish for you and then tie them to the tree. If you’re not feeling creative or crafty, your florist can easily create one for you. • If your location offers up plenty of outdoor open space, take advantage of it and set up some outdoor activities for your guests. Traditional backyard games like croquet, bocce ball, and horseshoes are fun for everyone and involve minimal set-up. • Photo booths are gaining more and more popularity at weddings and give guests a chance to ham it up for the camera. You can bring in a real photo booth, or keep it simple and have your photographer shoot against a neutral background. Be sure to bring in lots of props for your guests to dress up in and have fun with. These goofy snapshots can make for great casual and candid memories of your night, and the prints can be great additions to thank-you cards.
*Create a Craft Area Turn one room into an arts-and-crafts centre. Have a colouring contest with prizes for the most colourful drawings. But what if the weather’s bad and the lighting in the hall is terrible? Don’t panic; a photo session can be scheduled a few days before or after the wedding. A good photographer will know how to immortalize your union in an unusual and stunning way, worthy of a glossy magazine. With a photo booth and a few accessories at the reception, your guests can also pose for posterity. A few crazy snapshots will definitely help them remember the event. You can even ask your guests to send you a few of their favourite photos that they took during the festivities. A wedding filmed from every angle Guest interviews, staging, backstage cameras at the ceremony: it sounds like Hollywood! A wedding videographer will trace the history of this unique day as if it were a movie. You’ll be filmed from the moment you start your wedding preparations with your bridesmaids, making the final product a treat for all the people you love. So, would you like a wedding album or a movie? Why not both!

to help. Inspiration boards, sometimes referred to as idea boards, are commonly used by interior designers, artists, writers, and even wedding planners. Such boards can serve a great purpose when starting a new project, especially if all of your creative ideas seem to lack cohesion. Sometimes seeing things together, rather than in bits and pieces on their own, can fuel even more creativity. Inspiration boards can include magazine clippings, photographs, fabric swatches, quotes or literary passages, and colour swatches. As the idea board grows, you may find a common denominator among your inspirational elements. This can help determine a theme for your wedding or jumpstart other planning. While poster boards may be more traditional idea boards, creative ideas also can be compiled in binders or scrapbooks, which work especially well at keeping all items organized and concise. Plus, they’re portable, which means you can take a scrapbook to a meeting with a wedding vendor and show him or her your concepts for the wedding. Later, when photographers, florists and other vendors have been booked, you can attach receipts or agreements to the inspiration board for future reference. This keeps all of your important wedding information in one place rather than requiring you to search through different folders or files for important documents. In addition, if friends or family members ask for advice on vendors and planning their own weddings in the future, you can readily access your inspiration board. To start building your own board or book, take clippings of photos or articles that resonate with you. As you visit bridal shops and other stores, take fabric swatches and pictures of particular looks. Attend bridal shows and take home promotional materials. Remember, inspiration may not always come from bridal-related resources. Anything you come across in your daily life — such as window-shopping at a furniture store or passing an art exhibit — may inspire some creativity.
