HOW TO SUPREME CITRUS Step 1

Using a sharp chef’s knife, slice about 1/2 inch from the top and bottom of your citrus fruit.

Step 2

Stand fruit vertically on the work surface.

Step 3

Working from top to bottom, cut off the peel where it meets the flesh, following the curve of the fruit.

Step 4

Look over your work! Be sure to trim away any remaining pith.

Step 5

Working over a bowl to catch the juices, hold the fruit in one hand.

Cut between each membrane to release the supreme, and let it fall into the bowl.

When we were looking for the perfect pasta sauce, we wanted something truly authentic with rich, homemade flavor. Our tomatoes, of course, had to come from Italy. They’re hand-picked at a family-owned farm, then slow-cooked with quality ingredients like extra virgin olive oil, garlic and herbs.

The low and slow cooking method yields a richer flavor and texture while also preserving more nutrients. You won’t find any preservatives or added sugar, either—just the good stuff! Choose from two varieties: Arrabbiata or Tomato Basil. $

The Fresh Market Artisan Pastas

Our imported pastas come from a 150-year-old, familyowned producer in Italy. They’re cut with bronze dies, creating a course, rustic texture that holds sauce perfectly.

While some commercial pasta producers use high heat to speed up the drying process, ours is dried slowly for 36 hours. Slow drying at low temperatures makes for a better texture that’s deliciously chewy served al dente. It’s also more porous, so you’ll enjoy more tasty sauce in every bite.

Spicy Torcetti

with Yellow Tomato Sauce, Pancetta and Pine Nuts

16 oz The Fresh Market

Torcetti Artisan Pasta 4 oz diced pancetta 1 shallot, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 24 oz The Fresh Market

Yellow Tomato Sauce 3 tbsp mascarpone cheese salt and freshly ground pepper 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ¼c pine nuts Italian breadcrumbs ¼c 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped Parmigiano Reggiano, for serving Cook pasta according to package instructions. Drain and reserve about ¼ – ½ cup pasta water.

While pasta cooks, heat a large saucepan over medium heat.

Add pancetta and cook until it begins to brown and crisp, about 7 minutes. Add shallot and garlic and cook until shallots are translucent, and garlic is fragrant, about 1 – 2 minutes more. Add pasta water and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add tomato sauce and mascarpone cheese, stirring to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste, reduce heat to medium low and simmer about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat oil in small saucepan over medium high heat.

Add pine nuts and breadcrumbs, stirring constantly until toasted and slightly fragrant, about 3 – 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Add basil and cooked pasta to sauce, tossing to combine. Serve family-style, topped with pine nut mixture and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano.

Michiel Perry Michiel Perry is a “Black Southern Belle” who loves fashion, home décor and everything Southern— including Lowcountry cuisine. We recently sat down with Michiel to talk about her lifestyle brand, family traditions and favorite Southern dishes.

Be sure to try her go-to weeknight recipe for Easy Shrimp Sauté!

How did you become known as the “Black Southern Belle”?

I was inspired to create my lifestyle brand in 2015 when I planned my Charleston wedding and decorated my first home in Maryland. There were little to no resources that combined African-American and Southern influences. Black Southern Belle included all aspects of who I am, so it became my brand’s name.

I know February is a special month for you. You have a wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day, and your daughter’s birthday is also this month. Are you planning on making a special dinner or dessert for each occasion?

My husband loves carbs and slowbaked chicken wings marinated in my secret beer marinade, so that’s a must. We also love collecting Southern cocktail mixers so will likely try a few new ones. My daughter is turning one this coming February and loves sweet potatoes, so I’ll bake a sweet potato pie or sweet potato bread pudding that she can enjoy, too.

Your tagline is “Southern Bred, Soul Infused.” What are some of your go-to tips and tricks to infuse some soul into your cooking?

What’s your go-to, easy weeknight dinner?

You can never go wrong with a rotisserie chicken from The Fresh Market. I love making all variations of rice My family has a turkey and gizzard bowls. I also love picking up the pre-made rice perlo that takes two days to make, crab cakes. They are truly restaurant-quality from the broth to the table. Although it’s and are the perfect addition to an easy a simple dish, it’s something we make for biscuit benedict for brunch. My husband and special moments and is a true representation I also love trying out the newest brands in the of Gullah and Lowcountry cuisine where my specialty drink section, especially anything father’s family is from in South Carolina. with protein or probiotics.

If okra isn’t in season, you can always use frozen, though I do prefer to use fresh tomatoes if possible. My family loves enjoying this served over jasmine rice. It makes about 5-6 servings, so we typically have plenty of leftovers.

Easy Shrimp Sauté with Okra and Tomatoes

Jasmine rice 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided 1c shallots, diced (from 2-3 shallots) 1 lb peeled and deveined shrimp 2 garlic cloves, smashed 1.5 lb fresh okra, sliced Garlic powder, to taste Himalayan salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 1c grape or cherry tomatoes Cook rice according to package instructions.

Place a 10-inch cast-iron skillet over high heat and add 2 tbsp olive oil. Once oil is shimmering, add shallots and sauté 1 minute.

Add shrimp and sauté 1 minute on each side. Remove shallot and shrimp mixture from skillet, place in a bowl and set aside.

Reduce heat to medium, add smashed garlic and remaining 1 tbsp oil to skillet. Sauté until brown, about 2-3 minutes.

Add okra and season with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Cook 5 minutes more. Add tomatoes, then add reserved shallot and shrimp mixture back to skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes.

To serve, add rice to individual bowls and spoon shrimp and okra mixture overtop.
