Georgia Southern University Names R. Gregory Evans, M.P.H., Ph.D. Dean of the Jiann-­‐Ping Hsu College of Public Health

STATESBORO, Ga. – Dec. 5, 2011 – Georgia Southern University has named R. Gregory Evans, M.P.H., Ph.D., dean of the Jiann-­‐Ping Hsu College of Public Health. Evans will begin his new role on April 1, 2012. Evans joins Georgia Southern University from Saint Louis University where he previously served as director of the Institute for Biosecurity and professor of environmental health. He has worked in public health since 1981 and his career has included extensive research in the area of environmental health focusing on exposure assessment and health effects of automobile pollutions, dioxin, lead and pesticides. In 2000, Evans founded the Institute for Biosecurity which today offers graduate degrees in biosecurity and disaster preparedness. Since 2000, his research has focused on biosecurity issues, developing and evaluating educational material on bioterrorism and performing research on severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and avian influenza. Evans has served as the director of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health for 10 years as well as the associate dean of the Saint Louis University School of Public Health and chair of the Department of Community Health, which includes the divisions of Biostatistics, Behavioral Science, Environmental Health and Epidemiology. He has authored more than 65 research papers made numerous national presentations and was principle investigator on dozens of federal and state grants. He is a member of the American Public Health Association, the Society for Epidemiologic Research, the ACSH New York City Advisory Council on Health Priorities, the National Advisory Committee of the Columbia University Center for Public Health Preparedness, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Advisory Board on Communicable Disease and Bioterrorism and a board member of the American Council on Science and Health. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University and later studied and conducted research in circulatory and cardiopulmonary physiology at the Institute of Human Physiology, Academy of Medicine, Warsaw, Poland. He earned a Master of Public Health degree and his Ph.D. in Health Services Research from Saint Louis University.
