Day of firsts: Kickoff and quarterbacks By Jannah Bolds The George-Anne staff

Today not only marks the kickoff of a new football season, but it is also the first time that the Jacksonville University Dolphins will step onto the Eagles’ home turf.

Because the Dolphins are not in the Southern Conference, the Eagles have never played them. JU is in the Pioneer Football League, which is included as a football-only conference in the NCAA’s Division I Football Championship Subdivision. The PFL includes teams ranging

from the East, Midwest and West coast, including Davidson College. The opening of this season also puts two GSU quarterbacks in a battle for the starting spot. Junior Jerick McKinnon and sophomore Ezayi Youyoute get the opportunity to show the coaches who is worthy.

Both Youyoute and McKinnon have been played throughout camp and even alternated in the final scrimmage. Last season, McKinnon played in 13 total games while Youyoute played in eight. As a passer, Youyoute completed four passes with six attempts and no

interceptions while McKinnon recorded the same numbers except one less completion. “They’re both talented young guys,” head coach Jeff Monken said. He said he does not believe there’s any edge to either quarterback for the starting position at this time.

GSU and JU fun facts From 1924-1927 GSU’s nickname was Blue Tide. Laron Scott earned 10 total awards throughout the 2011 season including one College Sporting News Special Teams Player of the Year and two Coaches’ First Team All-American honors.

Championship game when the Eagles hosted Stephen F. Austin University. Coach Erk Russell led the Eagles to their first national championship against Furman University in 1985.

Coach B.L. Smith holds the record in the most seasons coached at Georgia Southern with 13 total seasons. Smith coached from 1929-1941.

The phrase “One More Time” started when Coach Erk Russell said, “Hey ladies, hey fellas, hey gentlemen, hey everybody, one more time for the greatest team in America!” after the team’s 1986 National Championship.

Allen E. Paulson Stadium reached the attendance record of 25,725 in the 1989 I-AA National

JU’s Milne Field Stadium was build in 1998, cost $1,000,000 and has a seating capacity of 5,000.
