April 25-30, 2021

CHANGING PERSPECTIVES Reimagining the Annual Spring Gala Conversations x Connections: A Speaker Series Celebrating the Diversity of Minds, Intelligence, and Abilities reimagines our annual Gala fundraiser.

This event is still a vital source of revenue for our school.

We recognize the uniqueness of this time and did not try to create an online event that would attempt to replicate the fun and excitement we all have at our Gala. It is not possible.

The series runs from April 25-30, 2021 and is offered to attendees FREE.

We will rely on Sponsorships and a specially curated Online Auction to raise funds for Financial Aid and Professional Development.

The series will conclude with a Charity Poker Tournament open to all levels and spectators.

CONVERSATIONS X CONNECTIONS SPEAKER SERIES

The Gateway School Speaker Series is a new forum that will bring speakers from diverse backgrounds together in conversation. The series aims to facilitate open and inclusive dialogue, expose our community to perspectives on a range of contemporary topics, and ultimately learn from and about each other during this historical time.

CAROLYN SALZMAN FORMER HEAD OF THE GATEWAY SCHOOL BIO During her tenure, Carolyn Salzman (Gateway parent of Ben Salzman '04) led the school through a remarkable period of redefinition, which began with focusing on and streamlining Gateway’s mission. Carolyn’s relationship with Gateway began in 1998 when her son Benjamin Salzman ’04 first walked through its doors. Since that moment, she has remained devoted to ensuring that the school continued to grow and thrive. In 1999, Carolyn was elected to the Board of Trustees and served as Chair from 2001–2005. In this role, she oversaw the expansion of enrollment, relocation to a permanent facility, and the stabilization of school finances, including the appeal of the funded tuition rate and the establishment of a Development Office. To restructure the school, she initiated a reorganization that included reordering the overall administrative structure and redefining roles, formal program evaluation, redesign of budgeting and accounting systems, implementation of reporting and control procedures, and revision of teacher compensation and benefits. Her Board committees have included Co-Chair, The Campaign for Gateway 1999–2002, Head of Program Committee responsible for quality and cost of a new Middle School program, and Head of Audit Committee. In 2013, she was appointed Head of School. In the ensuing seven years, the school grew to nearly 200 students ages 5 to 14. In June 2014, the Board of Trustees adopted a strategic plan that she successfully led to secure Gateway’s position as one of the premier independent schools serving students with special needs. In March of 2020, when the global COVID-19 pandemic hit New York City, Carolyn seamlessly transitioned the school to a distance learning program. The online learning platform impressed parents, faculty, and students with an exemplary system that remained consistent with the school’s pedagogy and mission. She retired as Head of School at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

LAURIE GRUHN HEAD OF THE GATEWAY SCHOOL BIO Born and raised in New York City, Laurie Gruhn (Gateway parent of Susanna Gruhn, '20) is a product of independent schools. She graduated from the Hewitt School and spent fourteen years teaching English, Geography, and Drama at the Chapin School, where she also coached the speech and debate team. In 2008, as a single parent, she adopted her daughter, Susanna, from China when she was three years old. Her daughter graduated from The Gateway School in 2020. JOHN BANTA GRANDSTAND TEACHER BIO Mr. Banta is a 39-year-old New Jersey native and an Eagle Scout. The oldest of four, he enjoys reading, napping, a good fire pit, prefers oceans over pools, will spend months attempting to locate & reunite separated socks, and recently tried Wasabi for the first time (to much success!). Mr. Banta has taught at Gateway for 15 years and is proud to say he was fortunate enough to learn the Grandstand method with the wonderful Toby Pulanco, who had been taught the very same from Gateway’s founder, Elizabeth Freidus. Over the last decade and a half, he also has observed and adopted the same strategies demonstrated by other past Gateway legends, including Lisa Childers, Sara Kiesel, Ginny Nudell, Jossie O’Neill, and Sharyn Lico. A big fan of maintaining connections, Mr. Banta is thrilled to reunite this year’s Life After Gateway alumni with their grammar school community and looks forward to catching up with all the great things everybody has been doing.

JORDAN COHEN '15 THE GATEWAY SCHOOL ALUMNI BIO Jordan Cohen is currently a sophomore at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. He attended Gateway until 6th grade and Birch Wathen Lenox through high school. He is studying Finance and Economics and is interested in pursuing a career in either investment banking or commercial real estate. Jordan credits Gateway for teaching him how to organize himself. He now knows how to organize tasks and focus on eliminating the easier things first and then tackle the harder material. At Gateway he learned how to attack problems head on and put in the work to be successful in school and life.

LUCA DALY '17 THE GATEWAY SCHOOL ALUMNI BIO Luca Daly is currently a senior at Dwight School, and happy to be moving on to Bennington College’s class of 2025, where he has been accepted with a scholarship for Creative Design. At Bennington, he will be following his career path, which he started shortly after leaving Gateway. Since 2017, he has been Creative Director and Lead Designer for Daffodils in Paradise, a streetwear fashion brand based in New York City. He is forever grateful to the special time and people he encountered at Gateway: “they helped me open my mind to prioritize both hard work and creative discoveries.”

NIEVE FERGUSON '11 THE GATEWAY SCHOOL ALUMNI BIO Nieve Ferguson attended Gateway from 2008-2011. Afterward, she attended York Prep and graduated in 2016. In 2016, she went to Bennington College in Vermont. She wanted a small campus that felt like an arts camp. Bennington felt like too much of that, so she decided to leave and attend her original second choice school, Emerson College in Boston where she could focus on commercial television. She graduated from Emerson in the spring of 2020. During her time at Emerson, she also studied abroad during the fall of 2018 at the University of Westminster in London. She interned at CONAN on TBS right when the pandemic hit, and had to leave Los Angeles. She is currently working as a Covid Compliance Officer (more like Production Assistant) on NBC’s Manifest (Season 3 airing now. All seasons available on Hulu or Peacock). Her dream is to write for children's television, late-night TV, or a soap opera-like General Hospital. She loves Gateway and everything it stands for. She believes she wouldn’t be where she is today if Gateway hadn’t saved her from a public school system that was failing another neuro-typical kid.

ANNA GARNER KAMINSKI '03 THE GATEWAY SCHOOL ALUMNI BIO Anna Garner Kaminski attended The Gateway School from 1995 to 2003. Currently, Anna works as an Assistant Teacher and a Spanish Interpreter in a public high school in Hell's Kitchen. She attended SUNY Empire State College for her undergraduate degree and is currently getting her master's degree in 7-12th Grade Special Education there. Along with teaching, her passion is drawing illustrations for children. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn.

OLIVIA GIULIANO '07 THE GATEWAY SCHOOL ALUMNI BIO Olivia Giuliano attended The Gateway School from 2002-2007. After Gateway, she went to the Birch Wathen Lenox School on the Upper East Side for Middle and High School before enrolling at Connecticut College, where she was a History major. She graduated from college in 2017 and is currently working at The Hospital for Special Surgery. This fall, she will be attending Columbia University to start her Masters in Occupational Therapy. Olivia’s goal is to graduate from school and help people with physical and mental challenges, which she states she can relate to given her own learning differences.
