ANNUAL REPORT ON GIVING The Gateway School | 211 West 61st Street, 6th Floor New York, NY 10023 | www.gatewayschool.org

Mission The Gateway School is a K-8, independent day school that transforms the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits. At Gateway, our students become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. Relying on direct, multisensory instruction and guided by an integrated curriculum, expert faculty teach students the language, literacy, and critical thinking skills that are the foundations for success in mainstream educational settings and beyond. Gateway believes a close relationship between the school and parents provides essential support as students grow and seek to realize their potential. In small classes and as members of a diverse and inclusive community, Gateway students experience academic and social success, recognize their strengths, and are empowered to become independent learners.

I am proud to present to The Gateway School community the 2017-2018 Annual Report on Giving. As you will see on the following pages, we are fortunate to have a very generous community, and their incredible support is reflected here. We rely on this funding to ensure we continue to uphold our mission and provide the best possible learning environment for our students. In 2018, we increased our enrollment to a historic high of 180 students, implemented a number of academic program additions and enhancements, funded and held professional development opportunities for our teachers, and were able to begin the process of planning for what will surely be a transformative period for our school. We remain mindful of our mission as we move forward and maintain our commitment to providing direct, multisensory instruction that is evident in every part of our integrated curriculum. Our faculty is thoughtful, deliberate, and consistent with our mission, which is posted throughout the school for easy reference. As we continue to refine and develop our program, we have the ability to assess and track our students through their journey to ensure they are receiving the requisite skills and strategies necessary to be successful in a mainstream setting. We continue to provide and enhance our explicit instruction as we teach students to become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. As a school that is constantly self-reflective, we know that training never ends for our professionals. With our in-house consultant, Lydia H. Soifer, Ph.D., our expert faculty synthesized over 20 years of research on math-related learning disabilities as part of a growing body of academic knowledge. This learning was disseminated to the larger community as part of a professional lecture at The New School. We hope this event will serve as the catalyst for what will become a yearly occurrence.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE GATEWAY COMMUNITY,

As we look to the future, The Gateway School is focused on expanding and enhancing our facilities to meet the needs of our robust enrollment demand. In the new year, we will be embarking on a renovations project that will transform the Plaza Level (street-level entry) and revitalize the Middle School learning spaces on the Fifth Floor. The construction of a new Plaza Level Lobby will provide a warm and inviting entry point for our students, families, and visitors. The creation of a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center and additional Music Room will support a developing arts program, with musical theater, dance, movement, choral, and instrumental programming. This space will also have the capacity to host parent receptions and gatherings, as well as professional lectures. The addition of a Flex Space/Dining Hall will allow us to offer a lunch program to our students, as well as supplementary flexible use space for the general program. Classrooms and offices will also be added to the Plaza Level. The Fifth Floor renovations will provide equitable and efficient classroom and learning spaces for our students. With the proposed plan, we see the consolidation of the Middle School’s vibrant community. The renovations include the creation of two new Science Rooms, new administrative offices, teacher workspaces, and a student lounge. I look forward to sharing these exciting plans in more detail in the coming months. The future of The Gateway School has never been brighter, and that is due in large part to your generosity. Thank you. I am honored to lead during this exciting next chapter. Along with the faculty and staff at Gateway, thank you to our donors and families for their continued belief in our message that Success Starts Here.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2017-2018

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to present The Gateway School’s Annual Report on Giving for 2017-2018. Firstly, I am honored to take over the role as Chair of the Board of Trustees from our outgoing Chair, Warren H. Feder. Warren was Chair for an impressive and remarkable eleven years. During his tenure, the school was able to grow and thrive, and we are most thankful for his service and leadership. Now in our 53rd year, The Gateway School continues to develop its educational program and offer students a lifechanging school experience. With enrollment reaching 180 students in the current academic year, our curriculum is now able to include access to a regulation size gymnasium, signature trips for the Middle School grades, musical theater, more financial aid, improved compensation and benefits for faculty, extensive teacher training and coaching, and more. As we look to the future, The Gateway School will be expanding within its existing facility. Space that heretofore has been unused will be renovated and ready to receive our growing student body. To that end, we will be unveiling an exciting renovation plan and initiating a comprehensive fundraising campaign. Appropriately focused on the long-term well-being of the school, including its financial oversight, the Board of Trustees is overseeing the financial management of and fundraising for operations, expansion, and renovations. Overall, fundraising at Gateway consists of three different areas: the Annual Fund, Special Events, and Major Gifts. Both restricted and unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund provide the additional resources needed to maintain the school’s high level of programming. In our Special Events, we include the annual Spring Gala and smaller, niche events that occur throughout the year. Above and beyond these two fundraising activities is the contribution of Major Gifts. These generous gifts

support scholarships, endowment, and capital projects. I want to thank our most loyal and charitable donors for the continued support that made the 2017-2018 fundraising year such a success. Thank you to the Gala Committee, chaired by Lisa Wolman, and the Advancement Committee for your leadership in giving to our Gala and Annual Fund drive. Together, the Gala and Annual Fund brought in over $2,000,000, exceeding our fundraising goal. As always, thank you to the Parents Association, led by President Helen Brown, and the officers, Co-Vice Presidents Keri Young and Leslie de Oliveira and Treasurer Yumee Tunison, class representatives, and numerous volunteers for strengthening our parent community and enriching Gateway’s school life with events, community drives, and enduring support. Finally, thank you to the hardworking faculty and staff of Gateway. Your expertise, professionalism, and commitment to the Gateway mission make our school a place where students can succeed. You place students on the path to becoming skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. I appreciate your continued dedication and look forward to our future success.
