DEAR GATEWAY COMMUNITY: To say the year 2019-2020 was a historic one at Gateway would not be an understatement. We started the year in our new facilities filled with anticipation and hope. Families joining our community for the first time entered the door in West 61st Street as eagerly and nervously as their children. Would this be the right home? Is there a place for my child and for me here? Families entering a school they already thought of as a second home were curious about the renovations and eager to see what this year held in store. For families of our oldest students, it was filled with the bittersweet recognition that it was time to look ahead to a new adventure. We began with a glorious welcome back reception in September, and all eyes looked to the future, a year to celebrate a magnificent Head of School in brilliant new facilities and the start of a new decade for The Gateway School. And then our world shifted. Parents, teachers, and students all had to learn differently. Our beloved building was a place we all yearned to return to as we quickly reexamined how we did our work, took part in school, and navigated family life. Lost moments, celebrations, and opportunities were mourned, yet joy was found in amazing places. And, through it all, miracles took place. Families saw the work that our teachers did every day, and realized it is not a magic sauce. It is hard work, dedication, experience, and love of children that moved everyone forward. 2019-2020 saw an online auction and a glee-filled dance party that produced tremendous levels of participation. This support from parents, grandparents, alums, and faculty spoke to the commitment and belief in our mission that has never stalled. It is this support and generosity that continues to propel us forward as we look to not only navigating this current pandemic but learning from it and thriving. With a forward-thinking mindset, we have the opportunity to come out ahead of our circumstances and to set the tone for new ways of thinking about education which will serve us well into this new decade and beyond. Covid has shown us that the world of education must be fluid, flexible, and far-reaching. Gateway is that school; it always has been, and it will continue to be now. Our fundraising has always been about our students, recognizing what they need and knowing how to provide it. This Annual Report speaks to that. It reflects the pride and gratitude that the Gateway community expressed throughout the year in what earlier would have been unthinkable circumstances. In these pages you will see the joy and genuine excitement of students who discover that “I can do this!” and the extraordinary pride of faculty who see their work and training making a life-changing difference week in and week out. You see families celebrating in their children’s transformation, thanks to the work of this special place. We may not be all together in our building right now, but a great school is more than its facilities. We see that now more than ever. It is a mindset, a community that transcends walls; it is a place that stays focused on its vision and its mission so that its students now and fifty years from now may continue to thrive. As we transform the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits, we examine the myriad ways of leading them to become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. This success depends on a nimble, changing program that is focused on its mission but recognizes that the ways to carry out that mission will develop with each decade. Guided by research and training, we continue to develop new ways of reaching and teaching students now and in the future. To our families: we thank you for trusting us with your child’s education. Without your faith, your partnership, and your generosity, this work would simply not be possible. To our donors, thank you for your willingness to help us cover the distance between tuition and operating expenses. To our extraordinary board, thank you for your trust, your wisdom, and your guidance. Finally, to our administration, our faculty, and our staff: you are the reason our students love to come to school. You are the reason they grow the way they grow, and you are the reason Gateway shines. You are all the reason success starts here. With gratitude and admiration,

Laurie Gruhn Incoming Head of School

THE GATEWAY SCHOOL MISSION The Gateway School is a K-8, independent day school that transforms the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits. At Gateway, our students become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. Relying on direct, multisensory instruction and guided by an integrated curriculum, expert faculty teach students the language, literacy, and critical thinking skills that are the foundations for success in mainstream educational settings and beyond. Gateway believes a close relationship between the school and parents provides essential support as students grow and seek to realize their potential. In small classes and as members of a diverse and inclusive community, Gateway students experience academic and social success, recognize their strengths, and are empowered to become independent learners.

GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD CHAIR On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to present The Gateway School’s Annual Report of Giving for 2019-2020. The Board of Trustees plays a key role in ensuring the continuance of Gateway’s mission and provides vision and financial oversight. While this spring presented us with a remarkable set of challenges, Gateway's Head of School, Carolyn Salzman, ensured that the school continued to serve and support its students and its families. During her seven years as Head of School, Carolyn grew The Gateway School to nearly 200 students, developed and documented an integrated curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade, launched a professional lecture series, completed a school-wide renovation project, and brought to fruition the 2014 Strategic Plan. Her vision and leadership secured Gateway’s position as one of the premier independent schools for students with special needs. In March of 2020, when the global COVID-19 pandemic hit New York City, Carolyn seamlessly transitioned the school to a distance learning program. The online learning platform impressed parents, faculty, and students with an exemplary system that remained consistent with the school’s pedagogy and mission. It is with the deepest gratitude that I thank Carolyn for her commitment to The Gateway School and advocating for the education of bright students with language-based learning disabilities. Her leadership and dedication to the mission of Gateway have ensured that the School is in a fantastic position to transition to our incoming Head of School, Laurie Gruhn. We are so happy to have Laurie take the helm and help steer the School into this next chapter. Paramount to the success of this past year has been the steadfast support of our Gateway families. Your participation in and generous support of fundraising efforts has helped to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and operating costs; in addition, your support funded scholarships for current Gateway families adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and necessary technology for Gateway’s remote programming. In Gateway’s 55year history as our school has continued to expand and grow, so too has the engagement and strength of our amazing community. As the representatives of our parent body, I also wish to extend my thanks to the Parents Association, led by our officers – PA President Helen Brown, Co-Vice Presidents for our Lower School Monika Wyszomirska and Heidi Bonilla, Co-Vice Presidents for our Middle School Jeanne Madej and Jennifer Serrano, and Treasurer Yumee Tunison – along with our classroom representatives and numerous volunteers, for enriching Gateway’s school life with community events, fundraising drives, and thoughtful gifts to Gateway faculty and staff. Finally, I would also like to thank Gateway’s indomitable faculty, staff, and administration who are the heart and soul of the day-to-day operations and for whom our families continue to return year after year. Your professionalism, innovation, and commitment to the education of students with language-based learning disabilities continues to ensure our children are on the path to becoming skilled strategic learners and confident self-advocates. During a time of uncertainty in the world, I am inspired, assured, and humbled by the outpouring of support and generosity of the Gateway community. With deep gratitude,

Jodi Schwartz Chair, Board of Trustees

Gateway's Annual Gala was originally scheduled for April 30, 2020. Due to circumstances surrounding the global health crisis, the School was unable to host an in-person event. We continued with an online auction and sought to honor Carolyn Salzman for her seven years of leadership. The Gateway School is deeply grateful to all those who contributed at the sponsorship level to the Gala. Your support, now more than ever, means a great deal.
