ANNUAL REPORT ON GIVING The Gateway School | 211 West 61st Street New York, NY 10023 | www.gatewayschool.org

Mission The Gateway School is a K-8, independent day school that transforms the lives of bright students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits. At Gateway, our students become skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. Relying on direct, multisensory instruction and guided by an integrated curriculum, expert faculty teach students the language, literacy, and critical thinking skills that are the foundations for success in mainstream educational settings and beyond. Gateway believes a close relationship between the school and parents provides essential support as students grow and seek to realize their potential. In small classes and as members of a diverse and inclusive community, Gateway students experience academic and social success, recognize their strengths, and are empowered to become independent learners.

In 2018–2019, we reached levels of participation from across our community, particularly from our parents, that Gateway has never experienced before. This generosity paved the way for the renovation of our facility and the continued development of our program. It was an expression of the satisfaction and joy our families felt as they witnessed their children’s growth and development. In this Annual Report, you will read all about the philanthropic spirit of our constituencies, the success of our Gateway Gala, and several of the highlights of the school year. As you peruse these pages, I hope you will be as inspired as those of us in the school are honored by our community’s support. Today, we welcome everyone into a modern and spacious schoolhouse. Guided by our mission, the renovated spaces on the Plaza Level and the Fifth Floor were designed for a larger student body and to suit Gateway’s direct instruction model. A street-level Lobby greets the community and visitors alike. In our Great Room, which doubles as a Dining Hall and Movement Room, we offer students a full cafeteria experience. Our Arts Center includes an Auditorium, new Music Room, and dedicated displays for the Visual Arts. Several of these areas serve multiple purposes so we can host community events, lectures for professionals, and expanded after-school programming. To maintain our institutional history, we refer to the Auditorium as ‘Grandstand’ and have named our hallways in honor of our founders, Claire Flom and Elizabeth Freidus, and two long tenured educational leaders, Davida Sherwood and Toby Pulanco. By consolidating the Middle School on the Fifth Floor, we prepared for a larger enrollment in a program that only grows richer and more exciting by updating and creating new classrooms, new Science labs, a teacher workroom, and an expanded Commons. These facilty improvements have increased our ability to implement our mission: creating skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. The success students experience at Gateway comes from a consistent instructional approach across

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE GATEWAY SCHOOL COMMUNITY,

the grades that is research-based, direct, proceeds according to a defined, sequential skill and content curriculum, and relies on teacher training and coaching. To enhance programming, we expanded the Middle School’s field trip calendar to include the 8th graders’ first annual class trip to Washington, D.C. We augmented our social development teams and our support for language and literacy instruction. These teams provide regular support and feedback for students and parents and ongoing coaching for faculty and specialists. An expanded roster of college preparatory high school acceptances attests to the positive impact of Gateway’s program. The Gateway School’s continued success with students depends on a strong, defined program and support from our community. To our Gateway families, you are the ultimate partners in our students’ journey, and without your many contributions it would not be possible to continue our work. To Gateway’s most generous donors, thank you for making sure we bridge the gap between tuition and operating expense. To our Board of Trustees, I remain grateful for your wise counsel as we work to ensure Gateway’s financial future and, in turn, our ability to realize our School’s mission. And finally, thank you to our administrators, faculty, and staff for your devotion to teaching, learning, and setting the stage for the incredible work that occurs daily in our classrooms. With gratitude,

Carolyn Salzman Head of School

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2018-2019

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to present The Gateway School’s Annual Report on Giving for 2018-2019. The Board of Trustees provides vision and financial oversight and ensures adherence to Gateway’s mission. It has been an honor to be the Board Chair for The Gateway School as the work pursuant to the school’s 2014 Strategic Plan culminates in the renovation of our school. Careful financial management and active fundraising made the expansion and renovation of Gateway’s facilities possible. The renovations are a direct reflection of our community’s support for the school’s proven success transforming students into skilled, strategic learners and confident self-advocates. The Gateway School is now well positioned to enter its next phase as a leader among schools and professionals specializing in the instruction of students with language-based learning disabilities and attention deficits.

GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Gateway’s standards for programming have relied on a three pronged approach to fundraising: an Annual Fund, Special Events, and Major Gifts. In our Annual Fund drive, we appeal to parents and the community to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and operating expense. Our Special Events include the Spring Gala and smaller initiatives throughout the year. However, it is the generous Major Gifts that support Gateway’s scholarships, endowment, and capital projects. It is this support that made the 2018-2019 fundraising year a success and paved the way for Gateway’s expansion. I would like to thank some very special people for their leadership of our fundraising: Gateway’s Gala Committee with its Chair, Tracey Loh, and the Advancement Committee. The Parents Association, led by President Helen Brown and a committed team consisting of the Co-Vice Presidents Keri Young and Monika Wyszomirska, Treasurer Yumee Tunison, the class representatives, and countless volunteers enriched our parent community with fundraising drives, community events, and enthusiastic support. Finally, I want to thank the exemplary faculty and staff of Gateway. Your commitment to our students and their families is what makes Gateway a school in which students can succeed. To every member of our Gateway community, your continued support has been critical to the growth, expansion, and success of the Gateway program. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for helping The Gateway School continue to help students grow and realize their potential.

Jodi Schwartz Chair, Board of Trustees
