Life After Gateway CALVIN '13 I learned a lot of things from Gateway -- skills that I brought over. A lot of them really applied in high school and some of them the high school did a little bit differently, so you have to adapt. I definitely think there’s a period where you’re kind of learning how xyz teacher or school wants it done. I think, from the ground up, Gateway gives you those skills to not only adapt but also come prepared, so you feel confident if there isn’t that instruction – be that an essay outline or a manner of organizing a set of ideas.
BLAINE '14 Gateway not only helps in areas of deficit, but they also support in levels of strength and really push you to do your personal best. It is really important to understand where your deficit is, but also when you’re in Gateway, you get to really work on what you’re good at. For one writing assignment I wrote a script. My teacher was very nice, and it allowed me to push myself in a way for me to not only show what I read, but to put a little humor in there and my own little spin on it. I remember thinking, "Wow, I can use what I'm already interested in and just build up from there. This is so fantastic."
GILAD '07 Gateway had the smallest classes that I was in probably until I went back to college and had very small specialized classes. That allowed for really strong relationships with teachers and taking advantage of the opportunity to build those relationships outside of the classroom where you could ask questions, where you could learn, where you could just have a better sense of what was going on. That has served me incredibly well throughout my education, particularly in college and as the classrooms got bigger, and professionally. Having that foundation in a small classroom environment [like at Gateway], and being able to take that and build upon it, allowed me to excel.

ANDERS '16 One of the things that I want to convey to parents that might be asking questions about what post-high school might look like is that there’s a misunderstanding that specialized support and academic rigor are mutually exclusive and that they can’t really exist simultaneously in a parallel process. It's not true. What Gateway does so well is that we have this idea of the Gateway toolbox of skills that we learn, that we can then take with us to high school and undergrad and post grad. That remains. As long as you use them and practice them, that remains with you wherever you go, whether it be Stanford or community college. As long as that toolbox is present, don’t let your child be afraid to pick up the stick and run with it.
MICHELLE '20 I would say I've been doing pretty well in high school, doing my studies, being on the honor list. Right after Gateway, I really realized that I had a passion for public speech and just being an overall leader. For the past year, I’ve been on social media trying to connect with people around the city, kids around my age. In high school, I’ve made a lot of friends. Overall, I just hope that I can keep on doing better, becoming a public figure maybe after my mom’s footsteps of being a movie director and inspiring others by telling her story, and getting into a good university.
WES '11 One thing that I distinctly remember throughout my eight years at Gateway is we’d always have these trappers where we kept everything organized. Then we’d also have a daily planner where we’d write down every single thing that we were going to do each day. Because Gateway was such a structured environment, we’d have a lot of things going on, and we’d plan it all out and follow the planner every day. I think that sort of framework for scheduling, and really executive functioning, was so helpful when I got to college where I had practice and class and free blocks during the day. I had to figure out how i was going to work towards the other things that I had going on to be as successful as possible. And that sort of skill set came from my time at Gateway.

The Gateway School's Annual Spring Gala was back and in person for the first time in two years. Families, trustees, faculty, and staff came together at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers to celebrate Gateway's transformative education. Members of the Gateway community enjoyed an evening of delicious food, drinks, entertainment, and live and silent auctions. Our community raised nearly half a million dollars to support financial aid and scholarship assistance. A special thank you to this year's Gala sponsors for their incredible generosity, which will help Gateway continue its work with students with language-based learning differences.
Carolyn Salzman, former Head of School (20132020), was honored at the 2022 Gala for her work and years of dedication to The Gateway School and its mission.
Polly and Michael Brandmeyer, parents of three Gateway students and member of the Board of Trustees (Polly), were additionally honored at this year's Gala.
Tracey Loh, parent of Alex '22, served as the Gala Chair. This was Tracey's third year in this role. Thank you as well to our Gala Committee for their incredible work leading up to this event. You helped to make it a success!
