Schools crack ‘code’ to fast-growing computer careers IT jobs are expected to grow by nearly 20 percent over next decade n

Computer programming is one of the fastest-growing professions, and Prince George’s County officials say they are working to keep up with demand through three new information technology academies.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 343,700 computer programming jobs in the United States in 2012, paying a median income of more than $74,000 per year, and computerrelated professions are expected to increase by 18 percent over the next 10 years — 50 percent higher than the national job growth average.

schools are not prepared for that growth.

“According to our estimates, nine out of 10 K-12 schools in the U.S. do not teach computer science at all,” Emadi said. “Even at schools that do offer it, only about 5 percent of students take the classes.”

Code.org, founded last year, lobbies for increased access to computer science education, as well as partnering with school systems to help provide computer programming classes.

In Prince George’s County Public Schools, three high schools — Fairmont Heights in Capitol Heights, DuVal in Lanham and Gwynn Park in Brandywine — have IT academies founded within the past three years, with curriculums designed to prepare students for college and careers in computer-related fields.

In addition, school system spokesperson ShaVon McConnell said High Point High School also offers computer science classes.

Three schools — Crossland High School in Temple Hills, Dr. Henry Wise Jr. High School in

Upper Marlboro and Laurel High School — offer two-year Career Technology Education programs that include computer networking and computer repair courses, McConnell said.

McConnell said computer programming courses do not count toward a student’s math or science graduation requirement, but the CTE programs can be used for graduation credit in place of two years of a foreign language requirement.

Two additional IT academies are planned in the near future at Laurel High school in the 201516 school year and Friendly High School in Fort Washington in the 2016-17 school year.

In the academies, students learn programming languages, and how to create websites and software applications, or apps.

“We teach them multiple programming languages. We teach them HTML and JavaScript and CSS, which are used to design websites and web apps,” said Cullen White, an instructor in Fairmont Heights’ IT Academy.

White said the knowledge his students are learning will be useful no matter what career path they take.

“You look at the way the world works now, and everything

you do, no matter what you’re interested in, there’s an app for it,” White said. “So even if they don’t use it on a regular basis, they’ll be able to take advantage of this knowledge and leverage it for personal gain and for the betterment of society.” janfenson-comeau@ gazette.net

Computer-based assessment begins this school year n

PARCC aligned with Common Core

The days of filling in circles with No. 2 pencils are numbered in Maryland.

This year, all students will take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers assessment, or PARCC, which is designed to test on Common Core standards and will provide a measure by which students across multiple states can be compared.

Last spring, approximately one million students nationwide took the PARCC Field Test, which was administered to randomly selected schools across the country.

“It seems pretty easy to use.

The tools are all pretty straightforward and easy,” said Abiola Bakare of Upper Marlboro, 14, a ninthgrader at Charles H. Flowers High School in Springdale.

To date, 40 states have agreed to adopt the Common Core stan-

dards, a national set of rigorous standards designed to prepare students for college and career readiness, according to the Common Core website, corestandards.org.

PARCC will replace the Maryland School Assessment, or MSA, and High School Assessment, or HSA, used in Maryland. The HSA Algebra and English portions will continue to be administered until 2016 to meet graduation requirements.

Abiola was among those students selected to field test the PARCC last spring. He and his classmates took an online tutorial in March.

“It’s kind of like the MSA, but it’s online, and that makes it much easier to use.”

As PARCC is designed to be an online test, requiring schools to have sufficient access to broadband technology, some schools may opt to take a paper version of the test, said Judy Jenkins, director of curriculum for the Maryland State Department of Education.

The paper version is only temporary, however, and is scheduled to be phased out in three years,

May or June. A single score will be calculated from both sections.

PARCC was developed with computer-embedded features to eliminate any potential bias based on cultural background and with accommodations for English language learners, according to the PARCC website.

“With the first operational administration of the test [this school] year, they will use the summer to score the tests,” Pish said. “In the first year, parents may not see scores until the following fall.”

Jenkins described PARCC as a “beyond the bubble” test.

“You’re not just going to answer questions, you’re going to have to justify your responses,” Jenkins said.

Students will be asked to read real text, not text developed for the test, and select passages that reinforce their answers. They will also answer questions based on video and use a variety of online tools, including options that allow students to highlight, magnify or click and drag text and eliminate wrong answers.

Adaeze Okere, 15, of Upper Marlboro, also a Flowers student, said the online aspect made it easier, but the variety of tasks students are asked to perform makes it more challenging.

“They’re really asking you to do a lot,” Adaeze said.

Hybrid school board settles in Chairman: ‘The transition has not been without its challenges’ n

For just over a year, Prince George’s County Public Schools have been under a new system of leadership, with appointed and elected members, intended to forge closer ties between county government and the school system.

“The transition has not been without its challenges, but I think we’ve made tremendous progress,” said board chairman Segun Eubanks.

In 2013, Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) signed House Bill 1107 to give Prince George’s county executive more control over the school system. The bill expanded the county board to nine elected members and four appointed — three by the county execu-

tive and one by the County Council — in addition to the student member. The law also gave the county executive the power to appoint the board’s chair and vice chair, and to fill any vacancies on the board.

Appointed members were chosen based on areas of expertise, but those areas don’t define their representation, said appointed board member Beverly Anderson, a retired university professor and administrator.

Only two other school systems in the state have hybrid boards: Harford and Caroline. Seventeen boards are elected, and four are entirely appointed, although legislation passed this year will create a hybrid board with a majority of elected members in Baltimore County at the end of 2018.

T. Carter Ross, parent of two students at Hyattsville Elementary, said he felt adding appointed members created more accountability.

“You have more people to whom a parent can make

an appeal,” Ross said.

With 14 members, Prince George’s hybrid board is the largest school board in the state.

David Cahn, co-chair of the education advocacy group Citizens for an Elected Board, said the addition of appointed members dilutes the influence of elected board members, and elected member Edward Burroughs III (Dist. 8) said the board has gotten too big to adequately discuss matters.

“It’s difficult to have quality conversation and debate about the issues that affect our children’s education,” Burroughs said.

Eubanks said he doesn’t feel the board has gotten too big, despite having to occasionally encourage discussion to come to a close, even though meetings tend to run more than three hours.

“It hasn’t curtailed us in the completion of important business,” Eubanks said. janfenson-comeau@ gazette.net

The school system is installing office “panic” buttons, closedcircuit security cameras, electronic access doors, fencing around all temporary buildings and visitor management systems at all county schools, with the bulk of the work being completed this summer, Barrett said.

All school visitors will be required to present a governmentissued identification card, which will be scanned and run through a

The security upgrades cost $10 million, which is being paid through funds set aside in the two previous years’ budgets, as well as state grants.

The school system, which employs 65 sworn police officers, also conducts active shooter drills during the summer and four lockdown drills during the school year, Barrett said.

School systems need to maintain an active level of alertness, even when there are no school shootings in the news, said Kenneth Trump, a nationally recognized school security expert and consultant based in Cleveland.

“We’re happy to see schools doing things again with security and preparedness efforts,” Trump said. “We just wish school boards and superintendents would sustain that level of interest and activities when there is not a crisis in the forefront of everyone’s minds.”

One of the biggest things school systems can do is to redesign their

front entrances so visitors are funneled to the office rather than hallways, Trump said.

Several newer schools, including Greenbelt Middle School, Fairmont Heights High School and Vansville Elementary School, have this feature and it will be included in the design of all future schools, Barrett said.

Earnest Moore, past president of the Prince George’s County PTA Council, welcomed the security improvements, saying they would help educate both the school system and parents on school policies and procedures.

“A lot of times, when you don’t remind people of the policies in place, things can get a little lackadaisical,” Moore said. “Sometimes, someone may come in through an unlocked side door, or they may sign in at the office without showing their ID.” Moore said that by having the new security systems in place in all schools, it should help standardize security practices across the system.

• Empower children to take action regarding school safety.

Encourage them to report bullying and develop problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

• Discuss and review school safety procedures. Make sure children understand why these procedures, such as cameras, automatic locks on doors or visitor sign-ins are in place to ensure students’ safety.

• Create family safety plans. Ensure that your children know how to reach you in case of emergency.

Career academies offer possibilities without limitations Officials: Students can explore options for college n

Despite the specialized instruction offered by Prince George’s County’s 12 high school career academies, school counselors and officials say the tailored curriculum can still offer a well-rounded education and preparation for a variety of future careers.

The 12 career academies offer programswithinmanycountypublic high schools and give students a head start on career-specific training such as business and finance, graphic arts, media, communication and health.

Segun Eubanks, chairman of the Prince George’s County school board, said the academies are a good starting point for students interested in a particular field but don’t limit future options.

“My biggest advice to parents is that choosing a career academy model in high school is not choosing a lifelong career for students,” he said. “In today’s economy and today’s world, people change careers on a pretty regular basis, so pick something your student is interested in and excited about, so that when they graduate high school, they’ll make good decisions.”

Renee Hawkins, a counselor at Largo High School, said she urges the parents of incoming students who are unsure about enrolling in an academy to contact the school and ask for an overview of academy curriculum, which includes business/finance and health/biosciences.

“If a parent is interested in our two academies, they can call us,” she said. “I would ask them to find out what their child is interested in and [we can find] if it fits with our two academies.”

Hawkins said it is common for ninth-graders to have some idea of what career they would like to pursue, and the academies offer exposure to those fields while also teaching core curriculum.

Monique Graves, a counselor at Laurel High School, said she also encourages parents to be informed about and engaged with the process of selecting an academy for their child.

“The more a parent is involved with the kid’s education process, the more successful the kid is,” she said. “Too often, many parents are not at these meetings we host.”

Graves said the most popular academy program at Laurel is child development within the academy of Law, Education and Public Service, which already has a waiting list for next year.

ShaVon McConnell, a spokeswoman for the county school system, said career academics can help reduce the number of dropouts and increase the likelihood of graduating on time.

“The career academies provide students with college and careerrelated experiences and opportunities that go beyond their traditional high school requirements,” she said. “Studies show... the career academies substantially improve high school outcomes among students at high risk of dropping out [and] among students least likely to drop out, the career academies increase the likelihood of graduating on time.” eeastman@gazette.net

Future planning, ongoing tests add stress for students Mixed opinions on whether levels are getting better or worse n

Through every level of the educational process, parents say students’ battle with stress is a constant fight.

High school counselors say social pressures and planning for the future weigh heavily on the minds of students, especially during the last few weeks before graduation.

“For seniors, senior year is overwhelming,” said Doreen Hogans, school counselor at Central High School in Capitol Heights.

“That ultimate quest — what am I going to do after graduation — is hanging over their heads.”

The stress is just as pressing

for younger students, parents say.

Rene O’Dell of Hyattsville said she and her husband, Jack, have watched their 7-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter deal with academic and social stress at school, and have tried to adjust their parenting style accordingly.

For her son, who attends a school in University Park, O’Dell said the stress stemmed from having to make the transition from kindergarten to first grade, and adjust to a new environment and daily routine. Her daughter attends school in Baltimore.

“As parents, we’re just more involved and more aware,” O’Dell said. “The stance we take generally is to coach and provide advice and keep out of it.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest the following tips to deal with stress: eat healthy; exercise; get plenty of sleep; take a break; and discuss problems with a parent,

Eran Zamir of College Park, who has tutored students in

math, science and test preparation since 1997, said he believes middle and high school students’ stress level has increased during that time period.

“A lot of it has to do with the test regime,” he said, referring to the battery of standardized tests students are required to take in middle school and high school.

“They take up so much time of the academic year.”

Zamir said many students have so much anxiety about tests that they “freeze up” even though they know the material.

He said he tells students they can overcome stress by familiarizing themselves with the tests ahead of time.

“It comes with practice,” he said.

While some students still spend senior year stressing over college applications, teacher recommendations and college preparations, Suitland High

School guidance counselor Angela Stewart said she has noticed less stress among students since the school expanded its career options about three years ago.

Stewart said the Suitland school is among several Prince George’s County schools that offer students several career tracks beginning in the ninth grade, with curriculum options including military, arts and business.

She said she has noticed that giving students more choices is allowing them to pursue their interests and reducing overall stress.

“You have kids who have different avenues now,” Stewart said. “They have more choices and options.”
