High Bridge Elementary School third-graders run to High Bridge Park for the Bowie school’s year-end picnic on Tuesday.
Some members of the Bowie Boys and Girls Club basketball program are upset they don’t have a chance to put the ‘practice makes perfect’ motto to the test. Out of around 80 basketball teams, only about third are able to practice each week because of a decreasing amount of available gym space. The club uses Bowie school facilities to hold practices for some of its sports teams free of charge, but a recent city assessment showed that the Bowie Boys and Girls Club has been granted approximately half the gym, track and field time it was in 2009. The assessment revealed the South Bowie Boys and Girls Club also experienced reductions in practice time available to them at school facilities. “There have been a significant cutbacks in gym time over the past few years,” said Dwayne Gray, commissioner of basketball at the Bowie Boys and Girls

Two Bowie fathers are partnering to create a musical solution to child boredom and parent fatigue that will be soon available with a click of a mouse. Jim Hossick of Bowie is known to many Maryland children as the guitar-wielding, cowboy-hat-wearing Kidsinger Jim. A children’s performer for more than 20 years, Hossick has teamed up with Bowie resident and business consultant Alex Centeno to create a children’s entertainment website that will be a one stop shop for childrenfriendly music and videos as well as listings for live, local children’s entertainment, Hossick said. “[The idea behind] the website is to cater to artists like myself who make a living doing this, and for [parents] to learn about the tremendous variety of artists who are out there,” he said. Hossick said website venture has been one of his long-time goals, and that he has owned the site’s domain name – www.chil-

After nearly 30 years, Bowie’s oldest playground is getting a makeover. The Linear Park/Enfield Chase neighborhood playground was installed in the mid-1980s and is a popular recreational space for nearby families, said Ed Hall, superintendant of Bowie’s parks and grounds department. “It gets quite a bit of use from neighborhood kids — there are townhouses and single family homes nearby,” he said. “We determined a replacement [based] on age and how the equipment is wearing.” Hall said the average lifespan for playground equipment is 25 years, and that several parts of the Linear Park playground had to be removed because they

Club. “We’re not able to provide [players] with an adequate amount of gym time to prepare them for games.” The Bowie City Council sent a formal letter to the Prince George’s County Public School system on June 3, asking whether the practice times could possibly be increased. City staff noted that Bowie is planning a new indoor sports facility to accommodate space concerns, but that the structure will not be completed until December 2018. “[The reduction in gym time] greatly impedes the ability of these organizations to provide indoor recreational activities from November to March when they are most needed,” the letter stated. “We would suggest a meeting between the appropriate City and School Board staff to further review this matter and see if an increase in hours can be established going forward.” Max Pugh, a spokesman for the county school system, said that school facility rental decisions are up to individual principals and school staff. “Prince George’s County Public Schools are open for use by community organizations,” he said. “Each school principal
were deteriorating. When Bowie replaced most of its seven playgrounds about 10 years ago, Linear Park was left untouched because the equipment was not old enough to be replaced at that time, Hall said. Now, $44,000 from a Maryland Department of Natural Resources grant program will provide new playground equipment, park benches and trash cans by Labor Day, he said. Sherita Williams of Bowie is a member of the South Bowie MOMS Club, and said her group regularly visits Linear Park and is looking forward to the planned renovations. “The playground area for the smaller kids tends to be a little more run-down,” she said. “We are super excited to have a new up-to-date park close in the area.” Williams said the South Bowie MOMS Club organizes outings and play dates about twice a week for toddlers up to
