As spring approaches, thoughts turn to festivals, parades and markets. March brings out the Irish in everyone with the popular St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Washingtonian Center. Celtic dancers, bagpipe bands, fire trucks, and more delight thousands who don their green for this family event. Four-legged family members get their own special day with the annual Paws in the Park Dog Walk and Festival each April, a fun-filled afternoon that features walks, games and a “flea-less” market.
Once a month from May to October, the City Hall parking lot turns into a lively street bazaar with the Olde Towne Market, where you can shop, eat, and bargain hunt to your heart’s content. Unique shopping opportunities don’t end there. You’ll find great deals on gently-used and new baby and household items at the City’s Baby Bazaars and Flea Markets, taking place at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center, outdoors during the seasonal months and indoors when the weather turns colder.

Throughout its history the City and its leaders have held dear the notion that a healthy community must respect and protect the environment. Not only is there a lot of open space and parkland in Gaithersburg, through policy, regulation, education, and creative partnership, the City has adopted a number of initiatives designed to ensure the protection of our community for future generations. • The City has enacted rigorous green building requirements for both residential and commercial development.

• Gaithersburg offers single stream recycling, which eliminates the need for residents to separate materials, making recycling easy and efficient. Both 18 gallon bins and 65 gallon wheeled recycling carts are available to residents.
• Rainscapes Rewards provide residents with educational resources and financial incentives for natural drainage projects, including the use of rain barrels and conservation landscaping techniques. • In partnership with the Izaak Walton League, we piloted a program to eradicate invasive plants by using herds of hungry, grazing goats. • The City’s trucks, buses and other heavy equipment use biodiesel fuel, primarily made up of soybean oil. • Gaithersburg monitors and maintains over 24 miles of streams and more than 400 stormwater management facilities. We work in partnership with others to implement stream restoration and stormwater management retrofit projects.
• Both of the City’s Youth Centers feature geothermal heating and air conditioning systems and other unique environmental features, earning them Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) designation Grazing goats help to eradicate invasive plant species in Gaithersburg. from the U.S. Green Building Council. In fact, the Youth Center in Olde Towne achieved LEED Platinum certification, making it the first youth center in the country and the fourth building in Maryland to achieve this highest possible rating. • In the “Team Up to Green Up” program, volunteers partner with the City to adopt parks and streams. Partners receive supplies and support from the City for activities that include trash removal, tree planting and invasive species eradication. Gaithersburg’s environmental stewardship is governed by a philosophy that we are all stakeholders in our planet’s health, and it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to play the role of protector both in word and in deed. Learn more about our initiatives and explore how you can join our efforts at www.gaithersburgmd.gov/environment.
Would like to congratulate the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and staff for making Gaithersburg the Greatest City in the World!

With an official color of green, the logo of an oak tree, and designation as a Tree City USA for 23 straight years, it should come as no surprise that we embrace the outdoors in Gaithersburg. In fact, you’ll find 853 acres of parkland in 25 different parks all within our City limits and many wonderful outdoor recreational opportunities not too far away. Grab your fishing pole, kayak, bike, or hiking shoes and discover all the natural treasures right in your own backyard. Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm is one of the largest City parks, with more than 57 acres of open fields and recreational areas, and is perfect for walking, jogging, or just enjoying a leisurely picnic. On a typical day you’ll see pickup soccer games in full swing, families enjoying the picnic pavilions and playground, and fishermen waiting patiently for a bite at the two fishing ponds. You’ll also find swimmers and sunbathers cooling off at the seasonal Water Park, skate boarders showing off their latest tricks at the Skate Park, and families and friends putting around the Miniature Golf Course.

Look on a map of Montgomery County and you’ll find Gaithersburg pretty close to the middle. Long thought of as an “upcounty” community, it no longer feels that way with the advent of so much development between Gaithersburg and Frederick. As the crow flies, it’s just 13 miles from Gaithersburg to northwest DC.
But since we’re not crows, we’ve got to navigate the metropolitan traffic scene somehow. Live, work and play right here in Gaithersburg and all your traffic woes will disappear. If that’s not an option, there are plenty of ways to get where you need to go. 12 IN GAITHERSBURG 2012
SUBWAY Gaithersburg is at the northwestern end of Metro’s Red Line, with the Shady Grove Metro Station accessible by I-370 and Shady Grove Road.
BUS Regional Metrobuses and county-operated RideOn buses serve Gaithersburg and connect with the Metrorail at the Shady Grove Station. You can also catch the InterCounty Connector (ICC) bus, running hourly between Gaithersburg and BWI Airport along the ICC. The planned Corridor Cities Transitway, or CCT, is proposed to be a bus rapid transit system connecting commuters with
stops between the Shady Grove Metro station and Clarksburg, much of it to the west of I-270.
TRAIN Maryland Association of Rail Commuters (MARC) passenger trains stop at the Gaithersburg Train Station in Olde Towne, Metropolitan Grove on the west side of I-270, and at nearby Washington Grove, connecting Gaithersburg with downtown Washington, DC and the region’s most western suburbs. Parking at these stops is free, although there is very limited parking at the Washington Grove station. See GAITHERSBURG, page 16

A tradition since 1938, summer unofficially comes to a close with the annual Labor Day Parade. Marching bands, costumed characters, fire engines, clowns, and more wind their way through Olde Towne as young and young at heart come out for this quintessential community event. Nothing says fall like a festival. For over 30 years, residents and visitors have come together for the annual Celebrate Gaithersburg in Olde Towne street festival. With headlining music acts, delicious food, arts, and amusements it’s no wonder thousands join in every year to celebrate all that is great about Gaithersburg. And the
festivities don’t end there. Authentic Bavarian food and beer and the sounds of German music lure festival goers every fall to Oktoberfest at the Kentlands, which also features horse-drawn wagon rides, pumpkin painting and children’s activities.
Shoppers find fresh local produce at the City’s Farmers’ Markets.
As the air gets crisper and the trees get more bare, the City gets brighter with the annual Winter Lights Festival at Seneca Creek State Park, featuring over 380 illuminated vignettes and 65 animated displays. This 3.5 mile drivethrough light show also invites visitors to experience the lights during a 5K Run/Walk, a dog walk, and trolley rides ending in yummy s’more making. The City rings in the holiday season with Jingle Jubilee, getting you into the holiday spirit with hot cocoa and singalongs while you witness a magical tree lighting at City Hall.

The Town Center portion of the project, with retail and commercial use, will come later. Backing up to the wide open spaces of Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, this complex, next to the recently built 315 multi-family unit project, Highland Square, will feature a combination of 81 townhomes and two-over-twos.
