Residents worry possible sale of parcel could lead to development BY JENN DAVIS STAFF WRITER

Several neighbors in the Lakeforest Glen community in Gaithersburg aren’t keen on the idea that a parcel of nearby city land could possibly be sold and developed. A surplus land public hearing took place at City Hall on Monday to consider a disposition, or a relinquishing, of two strips of land that total .469 acres at the northeast corner of North Frederick and Travis avenues. The property, which runs alongside Travis Avenue, was previously thought to be a right-of-way until it was recently determined that the land is owned by the city, according to City Manager Tony Tomasello. In 2012, an adjoining land parcel not part of what was thought to be the right-of-way was declared surplus

Downtown Crown is a relatively new addition to the Gaithersburg community, but this weekend the 26-acre mixed-use neighborhood is hoping to leave a lasting impression. JBGR Retail, the retail developer of Downtown Crown, has organized Sip. Nosh. Mingle., an event set to take place on Friday that will invite people to become a part of the growing, vibrant development and raise money for charity at the same time. “The past couple of months have been very busy for us with restaurant openings and new shops moving in,” James J. Garibaldi, a principal in JBGR Retail, said in a press release. “We’ve gone from a project under development to a bustling destination for socializing and shopping, and it seems like a good time to celebrate and show off all that’s happening at Downtown Crown.” The event, which will run from 4 to 7 p.m., will feature tastings from several of the Downtown Crown restaurants, the Dogfish Head Ale Bus, beer garden, live music, giveaways and more under an outdoor tent. Participating restaurants include

With Ebola stirring worry after appearing in the U.S., health staff in Montgomery County Public Schools have developed a plan to address any suspected case of the virus in a student. One part of that plan includes a new question for parents of students who have a fever and other signs of the virus: Where have you traveled recently? Students with a fever greater than 100.4 degrees along with another symptom of Ebola will now prompt health staff to ask parents whether they, their child or any close contacts have traveled from West or Central Africa in the past 21 days, said Mary Anderson, a Montgomery County Health and Human Services spokeswoman. Other symptoms of the virus include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, muscle pains, head ache and unexplained bleeding or bruising, said Joan Glick, senior administrator for school health services at the county health department. It’s standard practice for health staff
