TEACHERS

What is it you most appreciate about teaching in a private school setting and, in particular, at your school?

‘the most hospitable environment for learning and growth’

Eduardo Polón, Upper School Global Languages Department Head and Spanish Teacher Sandy Spring Friends School, Sandy Spring There’s an intangible quality to SSFS. It’s as much a supportive community as it is an intimate academic setting on a vibrant campus. This environment provides opportunities to engage students in a collaborative framework that promotes a holistic approach to learning. There’s space to be creative, expressive, exploratory and inquisitive. It’s a teacher’s dream. It’s also the reason we enrolled our daughter. SSFS recognizes the interrelatedness that exists in developing an awareness and appreciation of product, practices and perspectives in today’s global society. I value SSFS’ commitment to cultural plurality, evidenced in our diversity, made possible through initiatives like our boarding and international student programs, affinity groups, financial aid, and differentiated instruction. Rooted in the Quaker testimonies (simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship) and manifested in our community farm, service and composting programs, and pioneering solar field array, SSFS is a model for character development, sustainability and academic innovation.

‘an awareness & appreciation of product’ August 2012

Stacy Kincaid, Director of Diversity and Spanish Teacher St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Potomac

Andrew Seidman Humanities Department Chair The Siena School, Silver Spring I appreciate our school for its ability to attract both teachers and students who thrive on unique ways of thinking and on a spirit of collaborative multisensory discovery. Our faculty and administration recognize that students don’t only learn one way and so, as a result, we don’t teach material in only one way. Rather, we incorporate many different methods and strategies to

present information in order to make it memorable, exciting and individualized. We stress cross-curricular cooperation in order to encourage deep insight and connections; math classes compose poetry about graphs, students create propaganda art in history, science classes use strategies taught in reading class to retain information. Due to our small size, students can work closely with their teachers and with one another in order to discover their voice, work at personal challenges, share hidden talents, and achieve strategies for self-advocacy and independence.

As a teacher in an independent school, I feel highly validated as a professional. My school in particular actively cultivates my development as an educator and values my input in institutional decision-making. Because of that support, I feel motivated to create the most hospitable environment for student learning and growth. I have the ability to collaborate with my wonderful fellow language teachers to design innovative lessons, yet develop my own signature style in the classroom. Because I have fewer than 18 students in a class, I can hold a press conference in Spanish on Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts in Mexico, and everyone gets a chance to speak multiple times. A professional teacher is one who feels invited and allowed to pursue excellence. A school that treats its teachers as collaborative professionals is rewarded with students who are known and inspired.

Private schools are rarely short on resources. Teachers have everything—textbooks and related materials—they need. And, the schools are keen on staff development. We have access to academic and athletic workshops that enhance our coaching and teaching styles. At Landon, I have the flexibility to focus as much or more on character development as on academics. Education without goodness is not education at all. I enjoy the challenge inherent in shaping and

developing the character of these young men. Unfortunately, society often sends mixed messages and, as a result, students may make poor decisions or act on impulse or emotion. While my fourth-graders are still in the age of innocence, my high school boys don’t simply accept things. They need to believe in what I’m selling. My challenge is to convince them that just because the right way is sometimes the harder way, they shouldn’t abandon what’s right.

• Our mission is to educate students who will think biblically and live passionately for Christ.

I so appreciate that our Waldorf School is an independent school that has always allowed me the freedom to design my lessons creatively—to teach science through drawing, math through writing, geography through music, and to incorporate storytelling in all my teaching. I value that our school is concerned not only with the academic well-being of our students, but also with their physical, emotional and spiritual health, concerned

that our students be lively, responsible, interested, caring young people. I value that I work in a school that is not just concerned with educating children for the tests they will take at their desks, but for the tests that they will face in their lives, and that we prepare our students for these unexpected challenges by educating them in a multidimensional way to become resilient and imaginative problem solvers. Q&A

PARENTS

What made you consider a private school education in general and enrollment at this school in particular?

‘What a perfect fit. There was no transition period’

Madison Ashe-Donnem Barrie School, Silver Spring I decided to send my two children to Barrie because I know firsthand the values of a private school education. My sister and I went to independent schools and we both recognize the importance of an education that emphasizes individuality at a young age. Barrie realizes that kids learn differently and that they are unique. The teachers build on children’s strengths to make them feel successful. The focus on the single child is central to the Montessori curriculum. I’ve had great experiences with the teachers because they are quick to provide feedback and communicate regularly.

Kim Lourenco Echelon Academy, Sandy Spring My son’s inability to learn and progress in public school sent me looking for alternatives. Although on the autism spectrum and struggling with anxiety issues, James made great strides with the help of private tutors and therapists. Unfortunately, they didn’t translate into the classroom.

I'm also excited to see what lies ahead for my son and daughter. With the new Middle and Upper School classrooms under construction, I'm looking forward to the state-of-the-art 21st-century design. I know my kids are looking forward to it too.

‘I’m looking forward to the state-of-the-art 21st-century design’

Maria Carmona Grace Episcopal Day School, Kensington I was initially hesitant about going the independent school route when my eldest child started school. I imagined the academic, art and music programs would be very good, but was concerned that the social environment would be different from “the real world.” We finally took the plunge because we found the right place at Grace Episcopal Day School. We were very impressed with the academics, student-

6 Private Schools | Special supplement to The Gazette

teacher ratio and the school’s vibe. Grace is a very “down-to-earth” community where friendships among students and parents last long after graduation. Paying tuition for school is a sacrifice, but also a worthy investment. I really believe my kids have never complained about going to school because their teachers have the flexibility to make learning meaningful and fun while also challenging. As a result, I know my children have received an excellent education and developed critical-thinking skills and a love of learning.

When someone mentioned Echelon Academy and its arts-oriented, hands-on learning environment, I was fascinated. A visit convinced me that this was a place where James could thrive. As I described my son’s complex issues, the director instantly related. Her own son has similar issues. What a perfect fit. There was no transition period. He felt instantly safe and thrived in the nurturing environment. At Echelon, when one approach doesn’t work, the staff tries another. As a result, my son’s academic skills and comprehension have improved. He loves going to school, is motivated to work hard, and benefits from a partnership that includes parents, therapists and educators. August 2012

Benita Best-Wong Holton-Arms School, Bethesda My husband and I are products of a private school education, so we feel it’s important to give our children the same opportunities we had and make the same sacrifices that our parents made. It was the curriculum—its integration of academics, athletics and the arts—that attracted us to Holton. But it was the welcoming atmosphere that convinced us that our girls would be at home here. That’s important, as my two younger girls, twins, are shy. The

safe, comfortable, all-girls environment at Holton will encourage them to come out of their shell. While we recognize that the commute from Prince George’s County and the financial commitment will be challenging, my husband and I view this as an investment in our daughters’ futures. We know that Holton will instill an appreciation of learning while challenging and motivating our girls. We’re thrilled to be joining the Holton community.

We choose to send our daughter to private school for several reasons. The most important reason is because we feel the elementary schools in the area are overcrowded. The classroom sizes are too large and we did not want our daughter to get lost in the shuffle. We wanted a challenging academic program that would grow with her as well as a nurturing and loving environment.

Q&A

STUDENTS

How is your school preparing you—academically, socially and/or spiritually—for the future?

‘It’s easy to make friends. No one ever puts you down’

Paul Mavrikes, 11th Grade Bullis School, Potomac Bullis prides itself on creating well-rounded students. Academics, athletics and the arts all have place here. The emphasis on creativity, communication and collaboration is what allows students to succeed in the real world. Rather than killing us with homework, our teachers help us learn to work together, make quick and informed decisions, and act responsibly, with integrity and respect. We are encouraged to try new things. Since starting middle school, I’ve played eight different sports and gotten involved in the arts. Without Bullis, I would never have known I had a gift for music, art and golf. I’ve learned that once we find our passion, we can only grow from there.

Analiese Pappas, 8th Grade The Barnesville School, Barnesville Our teachers are wonderful and make learning fun. We do lots of hands-on activities. In language arts we might draw instead of just writing. In science, we go off on tangents, but the discussions are interesting and help us learn. Events, like pi day, are fun too. We have academics every day, but there are different specials so things aren’t always the same. There’s art, ethics, Spanish and music. We go outside every day for recess and snack. We’re in a rural area, so it’s pretty wide open. The environment is really friendly. It’s easy to make friends. No one ever puts you down. There’s a buddy system, where the youngest students are paired with eighth-graders and the other grades are paired up so they can get to know each other. We have lots of clubs—guitar, library, games. There are sports and other activities, like musicals, after school.

The Bullis community is extremely accepting. No one is ever made fun of for trying something new. It’s a place where people are embraced for being themselves. That’s what’s made Bullis so great for me for so many years.

Olney Adventist Preparatory School, Olney

Our school doesn’t feel like school; it’s like a family. We have a lot of cultures at school and we learn to respect each other.

The school goes above and beyond by developing each student. Since it’s a small school, the teachers and staff take time to help each of us succeed. Also, we help each other succeed.

Our teachers worship with us every morning before we go to class. This has helped increase my faith and make me a better person.

The teachers make learning fun. In science, instead of just reading and taking notes, we do experiments. In English, we might roleplay a scene from a story. There’s always

STUDENTS,con’t. How is your school preparing you—academically, socially and/or spiritually—for the future?

‘It helps you develop study skills...and really think about what you’re learning’ Shana Paster, 2012 Graduate The Nora School, Silver Spring

I feel the material we learned at Nora will be useful later in life. The work I completed at Nora makes me feel confident I can

handle whatever college throws at me.

1860867

The Nora School is truly a unique school that I’m proud to say I have graduated from. The workload doesn’t necessarily correspond to the amount of material learned, but I can say that it helps you develop study skills, learn not to procrastinate and really think about what you’re learning.

When I began at Nora my sophomore year, I was hesitant about what to expect. I realized on that first day that there were other students in the same position as me. I felt like I could make friends easily as well as fit in. Nora’s small-knit community has left me with lifelong friendships and I couldn’t be happier about the people I’ve met and bonded with.

‘What I learned is that I am intelligent and have the ability to learn just like anyone else’ Kiara Hughes, 2012 Graduate Katherine Thomas School, Rockville

I felt comfortable being in an environment where people were just like me. I wasn’t afraid to ask for help and just be myself. I August 2012

never knew that I would be able to graduate high school until I came to KTHS. I thought I would never be able to get a diploma. What I learned most about myself is that I am intelligent and have the ability to learn just like anyone else. It may take a little time, but it’s possible.

1859234

KTHS prepared me for the future by giving me additional time and instructions on my class work, homework, quizzes and tests. The teachers were very pleasant and helpful. They made my learning experience great.

Q&A

HEADS OF SCHOOL What trend is shaping or most influencing education at your school and how does it manifest itself?

‘God is the most significant truth that exists in any subject’ Catherine Ronan Karrels, Head of School Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, Bethesda It’s exciting to work with our faculty to continually shape and evolve our program to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. Stone Ridge has long excelled at teaching the skills of critical thinking, collaboration and communication, which are so critical in this marketplace. In recent years, the trend that has transformed teaching and learning most is our integration of technology into every student’s daily experience. The use of laptops, iPads and interactive whiteboards is transforming how information is introduced in the classroom and how students are assessed. The most rewarding aspect of this growth is how it empowers our students to become more resourceful and how it allows our faculty to better meet the individual needs of Stone Ridge’s learners.

Dave Hawes, Associate Head of School Washington Christian Academy, Olney Technology creates both opportunities and challenges. While students receive individualized instruction in a mode that they are familiar and comfortable with, there’s a potential for distraction. While the Internet provides immediate access to source materials, it presents the challenge of determining accuracy. Instantaneous access to answers also tends to create a false sense of knowledge. Education is about more than finding and learning facts; it’s about learning how to think. Our teaching reflects that. Our teaching reflects another trend—the expression of our faith and values in everything we do. God is the most significant truth that exists in any subject area. He permeates our curriculum and inspires our teaching. Our teaching also reflects a desire to positively affect students’ lives—their future calling and pursuits. God has created each student with a particular purpose that’s bigger than any one individual. We help students recognize and fulfill that.

Andrew Kutt, Head of School

Oneness-Family School, Chevy Chase

At Oneness-Family School we have been teaching some form of mindfulness for 24 years. Each day begins with a period of silence in all classrooms from age 2 all the way through eighth grade.

An emerging trend in education is the inclusion of mindfulness lessons in the curriculum. Mindfulness teaches students how to calm and focus their minds, as well as how their own brains work. An increasing number of studies show that practicing mindfulness can build resilience, emotional balance and concentration skills. There are a number of programs that are gaining popularity including the Mindful Schools (www.mindfulschools.org) and MindUp

10 Private Schools | Special supplement to The Gazette

Younger students can lead the mindful moment by ringing a chime and older ones can read an inspiring poem to the class following the silence. We have found that this practice sets a very peaceful tone for the day and is an integral part of building a peaceful community.

HEADS OF SCHOOL,con’t. What trend is shaping or most influencing education at your school and how does it manifest itself?

‘many of our students thrive in advanced technology classes’ Kate Fedalen, Head of School Chelsea School, Silver Spring

To ensure that our students have access to our technology, we’ve created a “TechMobile” that visits homes to provide our families any support needed to set up

Internet and software applications. Beyond using technology as a teaching medium, many of our students thrive in advanced technology classes. For example, a “headshot” was needed for this article. I didn’t think a current one existed but there I was in the yearbook. The graphics class “created” that reality with Photoshop. We see the trend in technology as an incredible opportunity for developing our students into the independent lifelong learners we want them to be.

1861132

Almost-daily advances in technology influence our students’ education and daily life. For years, Chelsea School has utilized technology to allow our bright students access to challenging reading material that may be beyond their current levels. Now that same technology is portable and can be accessed beyond the school walls.

Mothers and fathers like to know that their sons are in a small school where the teachers know and work with them as individual young men, giving each student a level of personal attention that is not possible in a large school. August 2012

Families instinctively seek an education that is rooted in an understanding that the human person possesses an intrinsic dignity and a desire for meaningful and transcendent things: goodness, truth, beauty, together with the need for practical training in good work habits. A small school, rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition can do this.

How to help a

SHY CHILD By Chelle Cordero

ISTOCKPHOTO/CHRISTOPHERBERNARD

ou know she knows the answer, but when the teacher asks for volunteers, she just won’t raise her hand. There are children in every classroom who allow life’s opportunities to pass them by because they don’t feel comfortable “in the spotlight.” Parents will often react with disbelief when they are told that the child who doesn’t know how to stay quiet at home doesn’t utter a word in class or other social settings. “Shyness involves anxiety and behavioral inhibition in social situations. It

occurs most frequently in situations that are novel or suggest evaluation of the person or situations where the person is conspicuous or others are intrusive. Although all children may experience shyness sometimes, some children experience shyness to a debilitating degree,” said John Malouff, senior lecturer in psychology, author of “Helping Young Children Overcome Shyness” and father to Elizabeth. Malouff, along with his wife Nicola Schutte, helped their then 4-year-old

So-called shy children may fear ridicule, criticism, failure or even bullying. daughter when her fears about new people and situations became overwhelming when she started school. “When my daughter entered prekindergarten, I expected her to have fun and learn. She talked and talked at home, loved books and said she was eager to start school. I didn’t expect her to refuse to speak to anyone there, but that’s what she did for the entire fall,” he said. Shyness is considered more of a feeling, where the individual feels uncomfortable, than a personality disorder. Some studies have suggested that there might be a “shy gene,” but if the comfort level is raised, the difficulty experienced will not become a permanent and disabling habit. The following are recommended strategies that Malouff and his wife used to help their daughter: • Tell the child about times when you acted bashful. • Explain to the child how she will benefit from acting outgoing. • Show empathy when the child feels afraid to interact. • Prevent labeling of the child as “shy.” • Set goals for more outgoing behavior and measure progress.

• Set a model of outgoing behavior. • Expose the child to unfamiliar settings and people slowly. • Prompt her to interact with others. • Reward her for outgoing behavior. • Praise others’ outgoing behavior in the presence of the child. • Help the child practice interacting with others. • Pair each shy child with another child in each important setting. • Read books with the child about individuals who overcome shyness. • Eliminate teasing of the child. • Teach the child to identify and verbally express their emotions. • Coordinate your efforts with those of other relevant adults. • Read about shyness to learn additional strategies for parents and teachers. • Consult with a school guidance counselor or with a psychologist. Never ridicule or discount the child’s fears of unfamiliar surroundings and people; instead, sharing your

own or others’ experiences and how (your) fears were coped with can certainly help. Gradually introduce the new setting and people, and if possible, be there to lend your support while you encourage the child’s interaction with others. Don’t force them to speak on their own, but include them in your conversations with others so they feel safe. Reward your child for positive improvements. So-called shy children may fear ridicule, criticism, failure or even bullying. If your child is bullied, Malouff said, you will have the “most success with school bullies by being persistently assertive with the teacher and school. It is possible to train children to deal with bullies, but it is usually easier to press the school to end the bullying. I asked a teacher once to end the bullying of my daughter by a physically abusive boy, and the teacher ended the bullying immediately and forever.” Children can learn behaviors to help them feel confident and interact more easily if you provide them with outgoing examples and patience. - CREATORS.COM -
