As a teacher in an independent school, I feel highly validated as a professional. Because of that support, I feel motivated to create the most hospitable environment for student learning and growth. I have the ability to collaborate with my wonderful fellow language teachers to design innovative lessons, yet develop my own signature style in the classroom. Because I have fewer than 18 students in a class, I can hold a press conference in Spanish on Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts in Mexico, and everyone gets a chance to speak multiple times. A professional teacher is one who feels invited and allowed to pursue excellence. A school that treats its teachers as collaborative professionals is rewarded with students who are known and inspired.

‘What a perfect fit. There was no transition period’
Madison Ashe-Donnem Barrie School, Silver Spring I decided to send my two children to Barrie because I know firsthand the values of a private school education. My sister and I went to independent schools and we both recognize the importance of an education that emphasizes individuality at a young age. Barrie realizes that kids learn differently and that they are unique. The teachers build on children’s strengths to make them feel successful. The focus on the single child is central to the Montessori curriculum. I’ve had great experiences with the teachers because they are quick to provide feedback and communicate regularly.

Although on the autism spectrum and struggling with anxiety issues, James made great strides with the help of private tutors and therapists. Unfortunately, they didn’t translate into the classroom.

I imagined the academic, art and music programs would be very good, but was concerned that the social environment would be different from “the real world.” We finally took the plunge because we found the right place at Grace Episcopal Day School. We were very impressed with the academics, student-

teacher ratio and the school’s vibe. Grace is a very “down-to-earth” community where friendships among students and parents last long after graduation. Paying tuition for school is a sacrifice, but also a worthy investment. I really believe my kids have never complained about going to school because their teachers have the flexibility to make learning meaningful and fun while also challenging. As a result, I know my children have received an excellent education and developed critical-thinking skills and a love of learning.
When someone mentioned Echelon Academy and its arts-oriented, hands-on learning environment, I was fascinated. A visit convinced me that this was a place where James could thrive. As I described my son’s complex issues, the director instantly related. Her own son has similar issues. What a perfect fit. There was no transition period. He felt instantly safe and thrived in the nurturing environment. At Echelon, when one approach doesn’t work, the staff tries another. As a result, my son’s academic skills and comprehension have improved. Benita Best-Wong Holton-Arms School, Bethesda My husband and I are products of a private school education, so we feel it’s important to give our children the same opportunities we had and make the same sacrifices that our parents made. It was the curriculum—its integration of academics, athletics and the arts—that attracted us to Holton. But it was the welcoming atmosphere that convinced us that our girls would be at home here. We choose to send our daughter to private school for several reasons. The most important reason is because we feel the elementary schools in the area are overcrowded. The classroom sizes are too large and we did not want our daughter to get lost in the shuffle. We wanted a challenging academic program that would grow with her as well as a nurturing and loving environment.

‘It’s easy to make friends. No one ever puts you down’
Paul Mavrikes, 11th Grade Bullis School, Potomac Bullis prides itself on creating well-rounded students. Academics, athletics and the arts all have place here. The emphasis on creativity, communication and collaboration is what allows students to succeed in the real world. Rather than killing us with homework, our teachers help us learn to work together, make quick and informed decisions, and act responsibly, with integrity and respect. We are encouraged to try new things. Since starting middle school, I’ve played eight different sports and gotten involved in the arts. Without Bullis, I would never have known I had a gift for music, art and golf. I’ve learned that once we find our passion, we can only grow from there.

In language arts we might draw instead of just writing. In science, we go off on tangents, but the discussions are interesting and help us learn. Events, like pi day, are fun too. We have academics every day, but there are different specials so things aren’t always the same. There’s art, ethics, Spanish and music. We go outside every day for recess and snack. We’re in a rural area, so it’s pretty wide open. The environment is really friendly. It’s easy to make friends. No one ever puts you down. There’s a buddy system, where the youngest students are paired with eighth-graders and the other grades are paired up so they can get to know each other. We have lots of clubs—guitar, library, games. There are sports and other activities, like musicals, after school.
The Bullis community is extremely accepting. No one is ever made fun of for trying something new. It’s a place where people are embraced for being themselves. That’s what’s made Bullis so great for me for so many years.

The Nora School is truly a unique school that I’m proud to say I have graduated from. The workload doesn’t necessarily correspond to the amount of material learned, but I can say that it helps you develop study skills, learn not to procrastinate and really think about what you’re learning.
When I began at Nora my sophomore year, I was hesitant about what to expect. I realized on that first day that there were other students in the same position as me. I felt like I could make friends easily as well as fit in. Nora’s small-knit community has left me with lifelong friendships and I couldn’t be happier about the people I’ve met and bonded with.

Stone Ridge has long excelled at teaching the skills of critical thinking, collaboration and communication, which are so critical in this marketplace. In recent years, the trend that has transformed teaching and learning most is our integration of technology into every student’s daily experience. The use of laptops, iPads and interactive whiteboards is transforming how information is introduced in the classroom and how students are assessed. The most rewarding aspect of this growth is how it empowers our students to become more resourceful and how it allows our faculty to better meet the individual needs of Stone Ridge’s learners.

Education is about more than finding and learning facts; it’s about learning how to think. Our teaching reflects that. At Oneness-Family School we have been teaching some form of mindfulness for 24 years. Each day begins with a period of silence in all classrooms from age 2 all the way through eighth grade.
An emerging trend in education is the inclusion of mindfulness lessons in the curriculum. Mindfulness teaches students how to calm and focus their minds, as well as how their own brains work. An increasing number of studies show that practicing mindfulness can build resilience, emotional balance and concentration skills. I didn’t think a current one existed but there I was in the yearbook. The graphics class “created” that reality with Photoshop. We see the trend in technology as an incredible opportunity for developing our students into the independent lifelong learners we want them to be.

ou know she knows the answer, but when the teacher asks for volunteers, she just won’t raise her hand. There are children in every classroom who allow life’s opportunities to pass them by because they don’t feel comfortable “in the spotlight.” Parents will often react with disbelief when they are told that the child who doesn’t know how to stay quiet at home doesn’t utter a word in class or other social settings. “Shyness involves anxiety and behavioral inhibition in social situations. It
occurs most frequently in situations that are novel or suggest evaluation of the person or situations where the person is conspicuous or others are intrusive. Although all children may experience shyness sometimes, some children experience shyness to a debilitating degree,” said John Malouff, senior lecturer in psychology, author of “Helping Young Children Overcome Shyness” and father to Elizabeth. Malouff, along with his wife Nicola Schutte, helped their then 4-year-old

Some studies have suggested that there might be a “shy gene,” but if the comfort level is raised, the difficulty experienced will not become a permanent and disabling habit.The following are recommended strategies that Malouff and his wife used to help their daughter: • Tell the child about times when you acted bashful. • Explain to the child how she will benefit from acting outgoing. • Show empathy when the child feels afraid to interact. • Prevent labeling of the child as “shy.” • Set goals for more outgoing behavior and measure progress.
• Set a model of outgoing behavior. • Expose the child to unfamiliar settings and people slowly. • Prompt her to interact with others. • Reward her for outgoing behavior. • Praise others’ outgoing behavior in the presence of the child. • Help the child practice interacting with others. • Pair each shy child with another child in each important setting. • Read books with the child about individuals who overcome shyness. • Eliminate teasing of the child. • Teach the child to identify and verbally express their emotions. • Coordinate your efforts with those of other relevant adults. • Read about shyness to learn additional strategies for parents and teachers. • Consult with a school guidance counselor or with a psychologist. Never ridicule or discount the child’s fears of unfamiliar surroundings and people; instead, sharing your
own or others’ experiences and how (your) fears were coped with can certainly help. Gradually introduce the new setting and people, and if possible, be there to lend your support while you encourage the child’s interaction with others. Don’t force them to speak on their own, but include them in your conversations with others so they feel safe. Reward your child for positive improvements. So-called shy children may fear ridicule, criticism, failure or even bullying. If your child is bullied, Malouff said, you will have the “most success with school bullies by being persistently assertive with the teacher and school. It is possible to train children to deal with bullies, but it is usually easier to press the school to end the bullying. I asked a teacher once to end the bullying of my daughter by a physically abusive boy, and the teacher ended the bullying immediately and forever.” Children can learn behaviors to help them feel confident and interact more easily if you provide them with outgoing examples and patience. - CREATORS.COM -
