The College of the Atlantic is a renowned Liberal Arts college located on Mount Desert Island, Maine, home to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park on the coast of the Gulf of Maine. COA is an innovative institution, whose primary focus is the relationships between humans and the environment and is part of the EcoLeague of colleges. Whale Camp programs prepare students with a solid background in the marine sciences and a deeper understanding of Human Ecology. Aboard their 65-foot sailboat, campers collect data to document whale distribution, feeding and behavioral patterns. Hands-on experience using onboard marine biology equipment helps unveil the powerful and endangered processes of life in the sea. Campers explore beaches, coastal trails and fishing villages and investigate life in the tidal pools and bogs. Whale Camp takes students out to sea three days each week to directly encounter the whales and other marine life for an amazing marine science experience. Whale Camp is a place where inspiration, exploration and discovery abound.

The Coach Doug Touch

A horrific motorcycle accident almost took his life, but through kids he has rebounded to become something he never dreamed - a gifted instructor. Twenty years later, Doug Wilson still doesn’t know what happened. The road was straight, the driving lanes clear and the weather was the typical spring dew of the early South Carolina night. But when he awoke eight days later with three broken bones and a severe brain injury from losing control of his motorcycle, the young man many people know today as “Coach Doug” was in a literal and physical fog. His mind blacked out the accident. The car behind him saw the bike’s tail light wobble. They saw the sparks of the skidding metal. And when they got to the unconscious Wilson, he was not wearing a helmet. That would prove to be a life-altering omission. Today, Coach Doug is a prominent force in Montgomery County recreation and youth development as his classes, camps and clinics teach kids sports, arts, sciences and computer skills. This is his 15th year with his dad, Bill Wilson, running CTI Kids Coach Doug Academy afterschool programs and summer camps. Around half a dozen CTI Coach Doug oofferings are available through MCRD each quarter. Wilson’s secret is commonly known as the “Coach Doug Touch.” He hates to turn any child away from his classes. If he sees children in a center who are not enrolled, he’ll stop the parent and invite them and their child to join for the day. He has a startling number of repeat participants and campers. “Coach Doug’s top concern is the kids and their parents,” Cindy Cheamitru said. “He has given up his free time to help struggling children. He is genuinely interested in kids and they know it, the parents know it and his staff knows it.” Now, 15 years later, he gets the occasional handshake of someone saying, “you probably don’t remember me. . .” These are grown kids who are in high school or college, who were once a little face in a sea of little faces. They still remember their first coach . . . the first time they dribbled a basketball, typed on a keyboard or heard about helmet safety. They remember Coach Doug. “For me, this line of work is something that’s agreeing with me,” he said. “I always thought I would go into business. But the accident is something I cannot change and why I say it was a positive. Each day it’s a pleasure to go to work with kids and teach them.” Reprinted with the permission of the Montgomery County Department of Recreation 4 SUMMER PLANNING GUIDE 2 • MARCH 2012 ADVERTISING

Summer at Sandy Spring

J

oin us for a summer adventure! Summer at Sandy Spr ing creates the biggest and best summer experiences for kids of all ages, from Pre-K all the way through 12th Grade. We’ve been at it for 20 years, and along the way, we’ve learned a few things: • Kids prefer swimming ponds to video games. • Some academic enrichment helps them keep their minds in shape for September. • They’d rather learn and run and laugh than do almost anything else.

We build on that free spirit and creative energy, and that’s why kids love Summer at Sandy Spring. Campers splash and play in our swimming pond, experiment during painting studio, learn teamwork while rock climbing, and create new forms of life in robotics. Summer at Sandy Spring is fun for kids and gives parents peace of mind. With our low camper to counselor ratio, kids get the encouragement and attention they deserve. Since we offer flexible scheduling and costs, finding a program that suits your needs is easy. All of our programs promote teamwork, friendship, and most importantly, fun in a safe environment. Summer at Sandy Spring takes place on the 140-acre wooded campus of the Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS), a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade college preparatory day school in the heart of Montgomery County. Using our own buses, we provide daily transportation to and from a variety of DC and Baltimore metro area locations. We also provide the option of before- and after-camp care starting as early as 7:30 am and extending until 6:oo pm. Our programs are designed to accommodate flexible schedules, create stimulating experiences, and offer tons of fun. With a balance of engaging academic enrichment lessons and exciting, recreational activities, Summer at Sandy Spring gives campers a high-energy summer filled with friendship, learning, and adventure.
