5-day programme
Unpack climate change as security challenge and understand its links with other security threats Climate change has the potential to be the greatest security threat in this century. It is considered a multiplier of a range of security threats from conflict exacerbation to migration, water, food and health security. This course is designed to equip participants with both conceptual and practical tools for understanding the climate change and its impact on the global, regional and local security environment and devising possible solutions to address this multifaceted challenge.

Faculty profiles The course teaching staff includes GCSP’s international faculty composed of academics and practitioners with broad experience in international affairs, security policy, diplomacy and military affairs, as well as high-level international guest speakers from civil society, government, academic and international organisations.

This course uniquely offers an opportunity to unpack the climate change as security challenge and understand its links with other threats to security on global, regional and local level. Participants will be provided with tools in designing policies aiming at dealing with consequences of and solutions to a warming climate.
Upon completion of the course, you become part of the expanding GCSP alumni network and enjoy continued access to our events. Security policy conferences enable current and past participants to meet, debate policy issues and share ideas and experiences in an informal setting.

Course design

Over an intensive five days, the training programme combines a range of teaching methods including: individual presentations by experts; panel discussions where specialists debate alternative perspectives; and case study syndicate work on designing a strategy to deal with climate change security challenges.
The course is intended for policy makers and representatives of civil society who are or will be involved in design of policies aiming at dealing with consequences of and solutions to a warming climate.
The programme is interactive and participatory, and requires a high level of engagement from participants. The Chatham House rule will apply, providing an atmosphere for frank and free discussion and dialogue, and the opportunity to benefit from the diverse experiences of the participants.
