PREPARING THE DEFENCE ATTACHÉ GENEVA GCSP The Geneva Centre for Security Policy is an international foundation with 45 member states from across the globe that provides forwardthinking and innovative solutions for leaders and policymakers concerned with international affairs and security in today’s complex, globalised world.

Defence Attaché Orientation Module Globally With the funding support from the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport of the Swiss Confederation (DDPS), the GCSP, in partnership with renowned local institutions, organises this course regularly in the 5 following locations: Addis-Ababa, Amman, Dakar, Geneva and Sarajevo.

5-day programme

Building Confidence and Experience In complement to the national training, the GSCP offers an orientation module for new Defence Attachés and civil servants involved in international relations. The course analyses major international security questions, especially with regard to the ‘New Threats’ agenda. It surveys practical issues of protocol, as well as knowledge and practices of international conventions. It builds confidence and experience though a proven simulation of a ‘Defence Attaché tour’. All aspects of the coursemeet the requirements of the Geneva Standards for Defence Attaché training.

Key benefits for you The module has 3 principal objectives: • to improve skills and understanding of defence officials in specific defence and security issues; • to provide a strong basis for their future professional challenges as Defence Attachés; • to facilitate knowledge transfer in defence related activities and national and international procedures. The course also addresses the possible relationship of the Defence Attaché with home and national defence industries.

Target audience This course is designed for future Defence Attachés sent abroad and civil servants involved in international relations. Newly appointed or recently accredited Defence Attachés are accepted, places permitting.

Defence Attachés operate at the crossroads of diplomacy, strategy, economics and public relations. As their roles and missions are complex and evolving, it is important for new Defence Attachés to be properly prepared to take on new functions. This orientation module will give each individual the opportunity to fill his or her own gaps in knowledge and skills.

Upon completion of the course, you become part of the expanding GCSP alumni network and enjoy continued access to our events. Security policy conferences enable current and past participants to meet, debate policy issues and share ideas and experiences in an informal setting.

Course design

Faculty profiles

This orientation module offers professional preparation for the military and diplomatic roles of future Defence Attaché and civil servants involved in international relations, including knowledge of the international conventions and practices that are an essential part of a successful tour abroad. The course uses an interactive learning approach based on experts panels, case studies and presentations.

The course teaching staff includes GCSP’s international faculty composed of academics and practitioners with broad experience in international affairs, security policy, diplomacy and military affairs, as well as high-level international guest speakers from civil society, government, academia and international organisations.

Guest speakers are experienced Defence Attachés, practitioners and academics. Each presentation covers a specific topic and is followed by a discussion period. Participants also receive reference material during the course.
