ENHANCING LEADERSHIP FOR PEACEBUILDING GCSP The Geneva Centre for Security Policy is an international foundation with 45 member states from across the globe that provides forwardthinking and innovative solutions for leaders and policymakers concerned with international affairs and security in today’s complex, globalised world.

5-day programme

7th Senior Level Course on Peacebuilding This five day Leadership Course provides an opportunity for current and potential leaders to enhance their understanding of sustainable peacebuilding and leadership styles. Although the body of knowledge about peacebuilding is growing, a lack of clarity about what makes peacebuilding effective persists. Similarly, considerable knowledge exists on leadership, but fails to permeate in the peacebuilding field. This course provides an opportunity for practitioners to enhance their understanding of both leadership and sustainable peacebuilding.

Interpeace Interpeace is an independent, international peacebuilding organization and a strategic partner of the United Nations enabling societies to build lasting peace since 1994. The International Peacebuilding Advisory Team (IPAT) is an initiative of Interpeace.

Support This course has been run by the GCSP since 2009, in partnership with IPAT, an initiative of Interpeace, with the support of UNITAR, and on behalf of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland.

Why you should attend This course will provide nationals and internationals driving peacebuilding efforts with a safe environment where you can experience with your peers and experienced leaders acting as coaches, the leadership styles most effective in fluid post-conflict settings. Particular emphasis will be placed on collaborative and inspirational leadership methods.

The course will be held in English. No translation will be provided.

Methodology The course will be interactive, building on the participants’ specific knowledge and experience.

Plenary and working group discussions will alternate between conceptual inputs and experiential learning methods.

Through concrete case studies, participants will reflect on leadership issues specific to the peacebuilding field. With experienced leaders acting as mentors, participants will be encouraged to address their own leadership challenges and develop problem solving strategies that are immediately applicable in their work environment.

Additional Information The seminar will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule. In order to ensure the best outcome for the participants and the speakers, the number of participants is limited to 24 and based on a competitive selection process. Full seminar attendance is required.

Tuition fees:

The GCSP does not cover health care expenses. All participants are responsible for adequate insurance (accident, liability and health) or need a governement guarantee to cover any health care expenses in Switzerland.

Target audience The course targets current and potential leaders actively engaged in concrete peacebuilding challenges. The participants will be gender balanced and include government and nongovernment representatives, civilians, members of security forces and international actors.

Participants will stem from organisations actively involved in peacebuilding, such as: • National institutions, including government, parliament, ministries, commissions and the security sector • Civil society, including traditional and religious leaders, NGOs, INGOs, trade unions, media, business or professional associations and women’s groups • International organisations, including UN, AU, OAS, ASEAN, EU and the League of Arab States, etc.
