aiwanese and Filipino people are much closer to each other than many of them probably realize. It may be that ties are so deeply rooted and so old that these things have come to be regarded as natural and casually taken for granted. “There are a lot of Filipino connections that we don’t talk about quite often,” Taiwan-born Vancouver resident Charlie Wu observed in a phone interview with the Georgia Straight. To cite an example, Wu, the driving force behind TaiwanFest, which features Fête With the Philippines as its theme this year, doesn’t need to look farther away than home. His Taiwanese wife was born in the Philippines, and so was his motherin-law, also a Taiwanese national. “That’s not a unique story to my family,” Wu said. “It’s quite often, because a lot of [Taiwanese] people were doing business in the Philippines, and have relatives in the Philippines.” In addition, his brother ended up marrying a Filipino person in San Francisco. Wu is the managing director of the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association (ACSEA), which organizes TaiwanFest, one of the biggest cultural events of its kind in Canada. In 2016, TaiwanFest began its Dialogues With Asia series to connect with other Asian communities,

bad that we didn’t, you know, do this earlier, and we didn’t have this kind of dialogue earlier, because there’s just so much we can share,” Wu said. TaiwanFest will take place on Granville Street between West Pender and Robson streets, at the Vancouver Art see page 10

Savouring an island nation’s sustainability > BY TA M MY KWAN

hen people think about Taiwanese food, a few popular exports will come to mind: bubble tea, xiao long bao (brothfilled steamed pork dumplings), and niu rou mian (Taiwanese beef noodle soup). But if you want a glimpse of a rural facet of Taiwan’s diverse gastronomic sphere, we suggest checking out this year’s TaiwanFest (September 1 to 3). One of the culinary programs at the annual festival is Let’s Savour Taiwan, a small-scale exhibition that showcases the island nation’s eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture movement. Attendees will learn about how this traditional industry is making a comeback through unique stories collected by artist and curator Yen-Chun Lu. In 2014, Taiwan went through a minor food-safety crisis known as the Taiwan food scandal. With the discovery of everything from tainted cooking oils (blended with recycled oil, grease, and leather cleaner) to adulterated dried preserved tofu (made with toxic industrial dye), Taiwanese people began to lose confidence in their homegrown products. When these unfortunate incidents were unfolding, Lu was working on an art project in Taiwan’s Gongliao district. While she was there, she discovered a group of people living in the mountain

villages who adapted environmentally friendly farming techniques. That’s when she realized there’s a close relationship between producing healthy food and protecting the environment, and decided to start a movement to promote the

concept of sustainable agriculture. At first, Lu didn’t think she would make a big difference. But after a few years of travelling through Taiwan meeting farmers and producers to share the stories behind their products, she can

see that they appreciate her work and have become motivated to do even better. “People are becoming more conscious of what they’re eating, and devoting more time to learning about these practices,” Lu explained to the Straight in a phone interview. “There is definitely a rise in the awareness of farmers and their products.” Lu’s initiative is similar to Vancouver’s community-supported agriculture and farm-to-table concept. In Taiwan, there is increased interest in farmers and growers. Taiwanese folks are beginning to embrace the people and stories behind locally grown products, which shows that supporting local farmers extends beyond North America. At Let’s Savour Taiwan, visitors will learn about Taiwanese farmers and chefs who have dedicated their lives and careers to keeping Taiwan sustainable. Lu has curated 11 stories that will be shared through visual displays at this exhibition, and a selection of products will be available for tasting and purchasing. One example featured in Lu’s library of anecdotes is Sweet 365, a business that sells tasty preserves. Its founder, Shih-Fung Pan, is a farmer and chef who uses his culinary skills to salvage ugly fruits and veggies that never make it to the marketplace. He helped turn 2,400 kilograms of ugly oranges into delicious jams, creating a sought-after product and reducing

food waste at the same time. Another story revolves around Green Light Farm. Taiwan is known for its aromatic and flavourful teas, but farmer and owner Lu-ho Chen creates teas that are nowhere near as fragrant as his competitors’ awardwinning counterparts. His tea leaves are less flavourful only because he doesn’t use herbicides and artificial fertilizers. Although he doesn’t pocket huge revenues, Chen takes prides in growing natural and healthy products while protecting the environment. Lu has amassed dozens of other stories that showcase Taiwan’s green-farming concept, and she believes that sharing them with others will directly benefit the nation’s steadily growing movement. “What we’re trying to do here is to get these farmers in Taiwan excited. Their products are seldom seen outside of Taiwan,” Charlie Wu, managing director of TaiwanFest, told the Straight by phone. “With these collaborations and integrations with their products, we’re hoping to really give the movement another boost and allow these farmers to continue on with their journey in what they do.” TaiwanFest runs from September 1 to 3 on Granville Street between West Pender and Robson streets, at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza, and in the Orpheum Annex. A few years ago, a Manila-based newspaper noted in a report that the Amis, one of the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan, say lima for “five”, pito for “seven”, and mata for “eye”, as Filipinos do when they speak Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines. Moreover, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported in 2015 that the native Tsou of Taiwan call their community meeting hut a kuba, and pointed out that it is similar in

design to the kubo of the Philippines. In 2011, David Blundell, a faculty member of Taiwan’s National Chengchi University, wrote a paper regarding the island nation’s role in the spread of languages in Asia. In “Taiwan Austronesian Language Heritage Connecting Pacific Island Peoples: Diplomacy and Values”, Blundell stated that the country was a “language stepping-stone into the Pacific from the Asian continent”. “Since Neolithic prehistory, Taiwan has ushered in the Austronesian languages that became about 1,200 in number spreading across most of Island Southeast Asia and Oceania for several thousand years, extending from origins, with examples found

in the Formosan languages, through the Malayo-Polynesian languages of the islands of Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Micronesia, Melanesian islands, Polynesia, and across the Indian Ocean in Madagascar,” according to the paper. The linguistic connection between Taiwan and the Philippines is the reason TaiwanFest is bringing over the Auba Rukai Children’s Choir. The Rukai are an Indigenous group in Taiwan, whose language belongs to the Austronesian family. According to Wu, the Rukai’s native language almost disappeared due to colonization, an experience that Canada’s Indigenous peoples share as a legacy of the residential-school system.

“This group is a good reminder for newcomers to Canada to understand that perspective of respecting the Indigenous community,” Wu said, referring to the choir. Its performance schedule includes a concert on September 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the show also features Filipino-Canadian recording artist Warren Dean Flandez and Taiwanese cello prodigy Jamie Chan. IN ADDITION TO a shared heritage

in language, Taiwanese and Filipinos may also have the same origins. Two years ago, a paper titled “Resolving the ancestry of Austronesian-speaking populations” was published online by the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the U.S. The genetic study was able to “infer a primarily common ancestry” for populations in Taiwan and Southeast Asia that was “established before the Neolithic” age. One of the authors is Dr. Tse-Yi Wang of Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei. Wang will deliver a talk on this subject on September 1 at the Orpheum Annex. Taiwan and the Philippines are geographically close to each other. Taiwan is the closest country to the north of the Philippines. Tourism exchange between the countries is strong. The independent island nation is also host to more than 150,000 Filipino workers, according to the latest figures online from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines. Mario Subeldia was one of the Filipino workers who came to make a living in Taiwan. He was later discovered by Taiwanese media as a sand artist. He has since emerged as a notable migrant artist, known for painting and fashion design as well. As part of TaiwanFest, Subeldia will showcase his newest fashion creations at a show on September 2 at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza, starting at 8:30 p.m. Joel Castillo is the president of United Filipino Canadian Associations in B.C. (UFCABC), a conglomeration that counts more than 30

Filipino community organizations from Prince George to Victoria. “It’s a big opportunity for us to showcase our culture,” Castillo told the Straight in a phone interview about the festival. Castillo acknowledged that he started to learn more about the historical and current ties between Taiwanese and Filipino people after he and UFCABC started working with Wu and ACSEA. “This is something that we should celebrate,” he said. These links include the intermarriage of thousands of Taiwanese and Filipinos. Gen Huang has a Taiwanese spouse, and she founded PhilTai, an online media platform in Taipei that is dedicated to helping communities in need in the Philippines. Huang’s work will be showcased through displays and a talk at TaiwanFest. In March of this year, Wu and his team travelled to Cebu City in the Philippines as part of their preparations for the festival. One of the words they learned on the trip was mestizo, Spanish for someone of mixed race. They also discovered that Filipinos typically hold that everyone is likely of combined ancestry, and that race isn’t a big deal. It’s a mindset that honours the intermingling produced by the country’s heritage of Spanish and American colonization, as well as migration to and from the country before, during, and after foreign occupation. “So we thought maybe one day in Canada, the way that our diverse society will progress…is the state of mestizo,” Wu said. “It’s going to be so mixed that we don’t really need to focus on each individual’s ancestry or ties.” According to Wu, the idea of races being able to move and mix freely is important to highlight in the festival. “We thought this is really a good reminder and a good reference for our festival to be able to bring up and share,” Wu said. TaiwanFest Fête runs from September 1 to 3 on Granville Street between West Pender and Robson streets, at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza, and in the Orpheum Annex.

Cycling is just one of many activities visitors can enjoy as part of the South Okanagan’s Chain of Events program.

How to make the most of your South Okanagan getaway (This story is sponsored by Travel Penticton.)

S

ummer might be almost over, but that doesn’t mean that the adventures have to come to an end. That’s because off-season, between September and November, can actually be the perfect time to get away. Apart from the opportunity to score some great deals, you can also avoid the crowds and enjoy a more authentic experience with the chance to meet the locals. And living in Vancouver, you don’t have to go very far to find some of the very best that B.C. has to offer. In fact, within a four-hour car journey along Highway 97, you can be in the beautiful South Okanagan, which makes it the ideal destination for a shorter stay or even just a weekend. The region is home to more than 70 local wineries, five craft breweries, three distilleries, and more than 30 annual festivals—all surrounded by pristine lakes, stunning beaches, an extensive trail network, and rugged mountain terrain. So all that’s left for you to do is figure out what you want to do first!

And now, Travel Penticton, Tourism Summerland, and Discover Naramata, with funding and support from Destination British Columbia, have collaborated to launch the new Chain of Events campaign—making it easier than ever to plan your next city escape. As Jo Charnock, project coordinator, explains, “We have developed a series of itineraries and signature experiences for each community, geared toward four specific traveller types: The Adventurer, The Athlete, The Foodie, and The Family.” The idea was born out of a program to promote cycling, until organizers realized that the area had a lot more to offer and a far broader appeal. “We soon learned that the cycling enthusiasts visiting were also interested in other activities, such as culinary, arts and culture, or wine touring, so we decided to expand the concept,” said Thom Tischik, executive director of Travel Penticton. The Chain of Events program has been created so that you can plan a vacation schedule based on your interests. For those who like to sample fresh local produce, or indulge in new

and extraordinary gastronomy, the Foodie Experience could be the one for you. Or perhaps you get more of a thrill from high-adrenaline, physical challenges. In these cases, you might consider the Athlete or the Adventurer Experiences, which can include taking part in one of the region’s many sporting events or getting wet in some of the lake-based activities like kite surfing or wakeboarding. And even if you have the kids in tow, the Chain of Events program also has a Family Experience itinerary, featuring mini-golf, go-karting, trampolining, and a ride on the Kettle Valley Railway. So you’re sure to keep the little ones entertained, too. The beauty of the program is that you can tailor it to your interests and how much time you have. And as Charnock adds, “Many of the visitors to our region only have a few days to spend here and this is a great way to help them get the absolute most out of their stay.” For more information or to plan your next trip in the South Okanagan visit the Chain of Events website at www. okchainofevents.com/.

I was walking out of Translink gates into Waterfront Stn. and our paths literally crossed. I almost bumped into you. Sorry! You gave me the best smile ever! You made my day and I hope you have a great one too. Coffee?

I’d just finished showering in the men’s room at the gym and had opened the curtain and was towelling myself dry when you walked by. I’m Asian, medium build and with a shaved head. You are white, with blond hair, and was wearing board shorts with a reddish-brown pattern. I think you liked what you saw, because you turned around, walked back and watched me as I was all full frontal and had everything on display. My eyes met yours very briefly as I passed by. I usually hit the gym 2-3 days a week, and it’ll be cool to have a workout, running or swimming companion. If you’re up for that, then let’s hang out.

You sat next to me this morning, and we were checking out each other while peeking out the window. Yes, I noticed, you have the most beautiful eyes I’ve seen. I should have said ‘Hello’ before you got off on 14th. I’d love to invite you out for drinks/coffee.

That’s true but I was also happy to be in line behind you. Hesitation got the best of me as I was going to comment about the wonderful “messages” you had etched on your skin and was going to offer to carry your groceries to your car for my random good deed for the day. You’re too fast. “Thanks” and smiles were all that were exchanged but the off-chance you 1) read this 2) are unattached 3) are intrigued, I’d love to take you to dinner. I see you eat healthy so Whole Foods Food Bar it is!! LOL Seriously, though, let’s have a nice dinner somewhere.

I bought a coffee and asked how long the ride is. You said it was short. I didn’t know what else to ask to keep the conversation going so I left and came back to purchase another drink for, and with my mom. Haha. Would love to talk for more than 5 seconds :) You may have been the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen.

I SAW A: I AM A: WHEN: AUGUST 18, 2018 WHERE: International Village Theatre I was already seated at the movie, Jurassic World 3:55pm showing, eating popcorn, wearing white Keds. You sat down in the empty seat to my left after the movie had just barely started and it was dark. There were some women a few seats down from us to the right making loud and funny exclamations throughout the movie that made me giggle separately from the giggles the movie elicited. You may have giggled a little about them too. They were hard not to giggle about. At the end of the movie I wanted to say hello, as we had somehow seemed to share space in the theatre. We had randomly shared a weird Jurassic World experience together; who wouldn’t say hi after that? If nothing else to just comment on it? But I froze. I had had a really terrible day prior, hence partly why I went to Jurassic World at 4pm on a Saturday. It felt abnormal, awkward, that I said nothing. Usually I would have been able to say something, anything! But all I could say after gathering my belongings was “excuse me, sorry” as I passed you to leave. Redo?

Composer and church music director Michael Park came up with his high-spirited sonic experiment when he realized that organ pipes could be powered by a classic children’s attraction.

He’d hear about organ pipes destined for the organ, which after more than a century of use garbage, and he just couldn’t let them go. So that needs some upkeep. “The biggest problem that meant that when I came into my position as music we have is that the leather is also original from

1912, and as a natural material it doesn’t hold up as well as other things,” says Park. “Age is a point of pride but also a point of weakness, in terms of that instrument.” The UBC-trained keyboardist, who’s also artistic director of Erato Ensemble and sits on the board of the innovative Redshift Music Society, adds that if the bouncy-castle organ works as planned, it could lead to further experiments, perhaps with more of a compositional bent. He points to the way that Redshift commissioned the Lumiphone—a 31-tone equal-temperament glass marimba—from composer and instrument maker Benton Roark. That’s resulted in a number of new percussion pieces being written, and he envisions other composers being inspired by the bouncy-castle organ’s combination of sonic flexibility and fun. “It’s our proof of concept,” he says, laughing. “We’re going to make sure that it can actually be done.” The only downside to Holy Trinity’s oddball fundraiser is that Park himself won’t be able to get in on the bouncing—the castle the church has rented has a weight limit of 90 kilograms per bouncer. But, having done his research, the organist isn’t all that disappointed. “At Pride, there was… Well, not a bouncy castle, but an outdoor bouncy pad,” he notes. “There were a lot of people bouncing on that, and my husband and I went on it for about two minutes, and we were exhausted. Anyone over the age of 10, I think, is not meant for those things!” Holy Trinity Anglican Church’s Bouncy Castle Organ Extravaganza takes place at 1440 West 12th Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday (August 25).

SELFIE D EPI CTS QUESTI O N S O F C O NSE NT >>> THE ATRE SELFIE By Christine Quintana. Directed by Pedro Chemale. Produced as part of Rumble Theatre’s Tremors 2018 festival. At the Italian Cultural Centre on Thursday, August 16. Continues until August 25

“I would have said no.” Christine Quintana’s Selfie is the second amazing play I’ve seen about consent this summer—the first was Amy Lee Lavoie’s C’mon, Angie! at the Firehall in June—and it’s no surprise to me that young women playwrights are creating the most powerful theatre around this topic. In Selfie, outgoing Lily (Grace Le) and introverted Emma (Olivia Lang) are best friends about to start the 11th grade. Lily’s older brother Chris (Carlen Escarraga) is a year ahead of them and is the most popular guy in school. He and Emma have been secretly into each other for a couple of years, and it all comes to a head when Lily and Chris throw a massive

2

party to celebrate their parents going out of town and kick off the school year. The girls get wasted and Chris and Emma finally reveal their mutual crushes and kiss. They go to his bedroom, and the next morning Emma knows that something has happened, but she can’t remember anything and her life is turned upside down as she tries to make sense of everything about that night. Quintana’s writing is natural, bitingly funny, and heartfelt. All three characters are wholly developed and vividly real. The actors are excellent and the chemistry between the trio is achingly believable, but it’s Le who is the major revelation here. Lily is incredibly funny and impulsive, and Le brings a lot of humour, vulnerability, and heart to her performance. Lily is one of my favourite new characters in recent memory, and Quintana’s writing and Le’s line deliveries keep Lily’s character occupying a particular sweet spot in the Venn diagram of ridiculous and hilarious. “You smell like a fancy drink from Cactus Club!” she tells

and putting them up on-stage, under the spotlight, and refusing to be silent anymore. And even though its characters are teenagers, don’t be put off by Selfie’s centring of youth: this is required theatre for everyone. > ANDREA WARNER

Difficult conversations take centre stage in Selfie. Mark Halliday photo.

Emma, utterly sincere in her praise. Even though there are plenty of laughs, Selfie doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff. Informed, enthusiastic consent is not a complicated thing, but it is, unfortunately, a relatively new concept. By deconstructing rape culture and exploring consent in smart, engaging, entertaining, and emotionally fulfilling ways, nuanced plays like Selfie and C’mon, Angie! are taking some of the most difficult conversations of our lives

off her PhD, teaching her first film theory course at her new tenuretrack job. She fancies herself a cultural critic—“Nothing offends me!” she says several times—whose approach in the classroom is to make her students realize that she is giving them the “gift of empowerment” by subverting their normal “dead white guy” syllabus to include more diversity. She also implements an

online message board in which her 100 students can talk to each other anonymously. “That could suck real fast,” one of the students points out, but Isabelle dismisses their concerns. Of course, it does suck real fast, and students begin debating, in real life and online, the validity of studying and discussing films that are rooted in racism and hate or that depict graphic sex and violence. Soon, students are using racist slurs in the classroom and on the message board, but Isabelle refuses to moderate or remove posts. To do so would be an act of oppression and censorship, she tells Lee (Mariam Barry), her wife, a tenured professor at another university. Lee, who is black, points out that in providing the platform and then abdicating any responsibility for what transpires, Isabelle is complicit in condoning racism and hate speech, but Isabelle won’t listen to Lee’s counsel. Nor does she think anything of bringing this hate into their home and inflicting this violence on Lee. In fact, see next page

numerous students of colour also let Isabelle know that what they’re experiencing in her class and on the message board is deeply traumatizing, but Isabelle isn’t listening to them either. When Isabelle herself becomes the target of one particularly aggressive anonymous message board participant, Theory kicks into more of a creepy thriller, but by then the audience doesn’t necessarily care what happens to Isabelle. Playwright Norman Yeung’s ambition and intelligence are obvious, and Theory has

a lot of potential, but it needs more work. Some future version of Theory could be a truly incisive commentary on the ways in which people of colour continue to pay the cost of white privilege, but this iteration is such a cerebral affair that Theory feels more academic than affecting, and frustrating rather than provocative. The play lives up to its title because in theory it works—the cast is solid, the performances are great, the premise is contemporary, and the staging is creative—but it needs more development on the page before it can truly resonate on the stage.

Superorganism is unapologetically weird > B Y MIKE USINGE R

F

antastically laconic as Orono Noguchi sounds when she’s in the recording booth or onstage with Superorganism, the 18-year-old frontwoman has no shortage of things to get off her mind when she’s reached in a Belgian hotel room. The London, England–based band that’s in the process of making her famous is in the middle of what’s starting to seem like a never-ending tour. By the time 2018 comes to a close, Superorganism will have wound its way through Europe, hit the major markets of America, swung up to Canada, and knocked off Noguchi’s home country of Japan. The grinding blur that is life on the road provides a leaping-off point for a conversation that takes countless endlessly entertaining twists and turns over 45 minutes. One minute, Noguchi is marvelling at the slacker genius of Pavement; the next, she’s talking about how her father’s love of Weezer convinced her before she’d even started kindergarten that she was destined to front a rock band. And don’t even get her started on her appreciation for the mad genius of Vancouver’s legendary Nardwuar the Human Serviette. What shines through is that Noguchi has days when the nonstop interviews, revolving hotel suites, and everchanging green rooms are both an incredible blessing and a weird curse. “It’s a tough gig,” she says slowly but thoughtfully, “but at the same time I feel very grateful that I’ve been lucky enough to be in this position. Up until a few weeks ago, I’d get into these states where I’d be ‘This sucks—I don’t even know what I’m doing.’ ” Give her a break for sometimes feeling overwhelmed. Imagine being just out of high school and fronting a band that rocketed out of nowhere in 2017, and made one of the great records of 2018; imagine being part of a project that’s been hailed as the saviour of indie pop by everyone from Pitchfork to Elton John. Most of the flurry of stories that have been written on Superorganism over the past year have focused on how the band started, and how it works as a weird sort of collective. The Coles Notes version has Noguchi approaching

to, things became difficult. “Junior year was very dark—it got to a really dark place,” she recalls. “I even thought about not going back to the States the summer after junior because it was so traumatic in a lot of ways. Me saying that is really significant, because it shows how terrible it was.” What helped get her through was music. Noguchi’s dad—who she says has been to countless Superorganism shows—was a major music nerd, obsessed partly with the golden ’90s period of alt-rock. “Culturally, in Japan, I couldn’t relate to any of the J-pop stuff or anime or any of the stuff that was popular,” Noguchi says. “Even in the States, I was excited to move there because I figured everyone listens to Vampire Weekend and niche ’90s alternative bands. Then I get there and everyone’s The London, England –based band Superorganism has been hailed as listening to Lil Xan and trap artists, the saviour of indie pop by everyone from Pitchfork to Elton John. which I like and appreciate, but wasn’t a New Zealand band called the instant Internet thing, with its debut like the idealized version of America Eversons after a gig in Japan. earworm single, “Something for Your that I had in my head.” Flash forward a bit and the Eversons M.I.N.D.”, bridging classic college The America she thought existed were living in London, looking to rock, Flaming Lips–brand psych rock, was shaped by a love of artists like reinvent themselves and keeping in and Tinkertoy electro-pop. Vince Staples is a contrarian.

his thoughtful and highbrow interviews—an attribute that has earned him features in Rolling Stone and the New York Times—the rapper refuses to let his identity be pinned down in print. Comfortable quibbling over semantics and able to deftly sidestep any comment that attempts to paint him a definitive way, the performer demonstrates a dexterity with language that underpins his critically acclaimed music. There’s plenty of evidence of his lyricism. After he began his career in association with Odd Future— a hip-hop collective that included members such as Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, and Tyler, the Creator—Staples released a smouldering debut record, Summertime ’06, which made the best-of-theyear list at media outlets including Pitchfork, Stereogum, and the Guardian. Two EPs followed, before the unveiling of his latest work, Big Fish Theory, in 2017. For all his claims that fans need only focus on the music, though, the rapper’s reputation as a whip-smart social commentator helps bolster his public appeal. While he’s quick to downplay his role in calling out the more manufactured components of hip-hop culture—rented supercars and selfies with other stars included—he’s the first to point out that much of rap music’s thugged-out lyrics springs from imagined rather

than authentic situations. For Staples, his troubled past and day-to-day experiences inform only a part of his creative output. Contrary to the many rappers who go to great pains to highlight the veracity of their stories, the performer is transparent about the origins of his back catalogue. “I’d never be able to say that every song is about my life,” he says. “I’d say half and half. It’s not like I’m trying to draw from a superspecific situation. If you want to think about it, ‘Loco’, ‘Smile’, the whole Prima Donna thing doesn’t have anything to do with me. Summertime ’06 probably has a little bit more to do with me. I think it’s all just on how people look at it. There are a lot of artists that don’t embody that [desire to tell a personal story]. I listen to Missy Elliott or André 3000 or Big Boi, and I don’t necessarily know if I learn anything about them from the songs that I consider to be my favourites. I can’t really speak for how someone who listens to my music will react to it.” Staples’s indifference to preempting his fans’ responses has allowed him to be particularly creative on Big Fish Theory. At a time when trap music saturates mainstream radio play, the rapper has instead turned to unexpected and eclectic collaborators, including Blur and Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and tech-house producer Jimmy Edgar. The result is a cross-

pollination of styles that leans on traditional electronic music genres like Detroit techno, rather than on the more popular big-room feel. “Hip-hop is electronic music,” he says. “It was pretty natural and easy to include it because when you think about hip-hop, you think about 808s and drum machines and all these other things that are staples in electronic music. “But at the end of the day, who cares?” he says. “Let’s just have a good day, you know? Get the cheese fries, get some ice cream—they’ve got the vegan ice cream now for the vegans. There’s no reason, just be happy about it.” > K ATE WILSON

that celebrate everything from the otherworldliness of Tokyo to the genetic superiority of prawns, a species that doesn’t fuck over its own kind the way that humans do. On the sonic side of things, Superorganism serves up a wildly mashed-up pastiche that’s somehow both righteously retro and thoroughly modern. The eight-piece—which now operates out of a home in central London where everyone, including Noguchi, lives— doesn’t bother jamming. Instead, everyone works out parts of songs on their computers, sending the files to their bandmates to be manipulated, tweaked, and built upon. The resulting mix—sprinkled with sampled frog croaks and standing ovations—suggests the Avalanches setting up shop in Strawberry Fields, with everyone from Animal Collective to Superchunk to “Loser”-era Beck invited to the party. Ultimately, Superorganism is proof that sometimes in this instantly disposable age, you can actually believe hype. For Noguchi, however, the band is also something more. As she continues to navigate a period in her life when all of her energy is given over to the daily business of being in Superorganism, it all sometimes seems too much. But what she’s learning is that, even though she’s a couple years shy of 20, she’s making the same kind of difference that the likes of Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Elliott Smith made to her as a kid. “I can remember listening to Elliott Smith or Daniel Johnston in my room, and just crying and crying,” she says. “Even though we don’t have a lot in common with their depressive, really emotive soundscapes, I’m starting to realize that to some people, we’re like the Elliott Smith that was there for me. People are coming up to me and telling me we’re helping them through a tough time. This is something that I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a little kid. To be able to inspire someone or change their mood when they are down is just mind-blowing to me. That’s when all the other stuff—me complaining about doing an interview or having a bad show—becomes totally irrelevant and stupid.” -

the night, and it seems to do its job.” At 64, and with gigs as disparate as fronting synth-pop pioneers Ultravox and cowriting the international charity hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” under his belt, Ure is no boy. Instead, he’s an avuncular presence, coming across as warm, wise, and self-aware, whether discussing the music industry or the chaos that is about to engulf the U.K. upon its exit from the European Union. Get Ure talking about music, however, and it’s clear that he’s still remarkably young at heart. Not for him the coddled life of the semiretired rock star. Instead, this summer he’s joined forces with old friend Paul Young and a band of Americans for a tour that’s the rock ’n’ roll antithesis of playing the casino circuit. (The two will play separate sets with the same backing band, then return together for the encore.) “I missed out on touring in America for about 20 years, and I got tired of it, so I started all over again. I found an agent, and I came out and I started doing little clubs and, slowly but surely, building things up,” Ure explains. “And Paul did the same thing. He had more or less disappeared from America, but he did a tour last year— a multi-act thing with mainly ’80s artists—and he enjoyed it. So I suggested there’s a way of touring where you don’t need to have a major label and you don’t need to go banging on doors asking for funding. And I told him how I’d been doing it: picking up

musicians—really good musicians— in America and getting back to how it was in the old days. “You have a guitar and an amplifier? Pick it up and put it in the back of the van,” he continues. “Put your ego to one side. If you want to go out and play places where you haven’t been commercially successful in the past, go out and do it and make it work for you. And if that means you have to get in the van and you have to go for 300 miles every day, be prepared to do that. And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past five years, so it just made sense that we’d do something like that together, and it’s been working.” Although Ure has only issued one album of new material since 2000, the rigours of the road— along with his recent purchase of a state-of-the-art Arturia MatrixBrute synthesizer—seem to have sparked a new interest in recording. “I’m putting my lab coat back on and trying to figure out how this thing works,” he says, laughing. “And I’ve got a hankering to get away from the three-minute track—still making something that’s melodic and atmospheric, but maybe just a bit more experimental. Although, having said that, what I’ve been working on over the last six months, when I can get into the studio, are songs.” > ALE X ANDER VART Y

NOBODY’S WATCHING (Argentina)

Back in Buenos Aires, Nico can’t cross the road without being recognized for his role in the popular soap opera Rivales. He isn’t worth shit in New York City, mind you, where the very underemployed actor gets by on a restaurant job and nannying gigs for prosperous friends. Julia Solomonoff’s film arrives in the International Hits series, and in that spirit it’s a breezy winner that doesn’t bring too much grit to its autumnal depiction of one man’s ongoing humiliation. But it isn’t vacuous, either. Nico (attractive Guillermo Pfening) finds himself in this unkind world after fleeing a toxic relationship with a producer who still exerts his unsavoury influence from the neighbouring continent. In New

York, a powerful female casting agent is no less prepared to use him as a side of beef—all of which amounts to a pleasingly queer twist on #MeToo. Vancity, August 29 (8:45 p.m.); Cinematheque, September 1 (4:45 p.m.)

ONE LAST AFTERNOON (Peru)

A middle-aged couple reunite and wander the streets of Lima while they wait for a judge to put the stamp on a marriage that ended 19 years earlier. Former freedom fighters Ramón and Laura are lucky to still be walking at all, it seems, since their relationship ended at roughly the same time that some of their comrades died in a hail of police bullets. Two decades later, it transpires that he still clings somewhat brokenly to his leftist ideology, while middle-class Laura has returned to the fold and a career in advertising. See where this might be going? One Last Afternoon covers a lot of ground in its back-andforth journey between the personal and the political, cathartic bursts of violence included, but it’s the unpredictable messiness of human nature that trumps everything in a smart and satisfying twist ending.

he Vancouver Latin American Film Festival returns for its 16th year with a roster of solid festival hits and a handful of more challenging titles. Opening the festival on Thursday (August 23) at SFU Woodward’s, small-town tale Retablo sets the tone for this year’s focus on the Andean cinema of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. It all ends next Sunday (September 2) with Perros, yet another fine drama drawn from Chile’s wounded past. In between is a rousing bill of international hits, works by new directors, and the evervital Activismo! series. Here are a few that we liked. This is the kind of shading we’d expect from any good drama, but Marcelo Tobar’s iPhoneshot feature is so deceptively naturalistic that we’re utterly sideswiped by what happens next. Cinematheque, August 29 (7 p.m.) and September 2 (5:45 p.m.) MEDEA (Costa Rica) The question that nags as Medea continues on its bleak but entirely captivating 70 minutes: why does nobody notice that young María José is visibly pregnant? Her parents are no use as they chitter about immigrants and ISIS and ridicule a would-be boyfriend who can’t afford a car. Her gay best friend is long gone by the time an all-nighter brings us to the mounting horrors of the film’s final 10 minutes. Nobody apparently cares too much about the inexpressive 25-year-old except us, and fearless Liliana Biamonte— who looks like a borderline Greta Gerwig—works overtime to test our goodwill. It’s a gambit that pays off big-time. Cinematheque, August 30 (5 p.m.) and September 1 (9:30 p.m.)

Cibo Trattoria cibotrattoria.com

Isabela Torres and Priscila Bittencourt are the Two Irenes who uncover a bizarre secret in one of the best features at the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival. TWO IRENES (Brazil) Director Fabio Meira’s beautiful feature hums with the haunted quality of childhood. At first it’s hard to know what’s actually real in this tale of a morose 13-year-old, a middle child with middle-child problems, made infinitely weirder by her encounter with the film’s other Irene—an uninhibited alter ego with whom she apparently shares a key family member. This movie shouldn’t work, if we’re

applying logic to its gently delirious scenario. But why do that with a tone this seductive? The lacy, sunkissed sensuality of Picnic at Hanging Rock comes to mind, and it’s every bit as timeless, although Two Irenes also feels very much grounded in the dust of its rural Brazilian setting. If anything at VLAFF deserves the “notto-be-missed” tag, it’s this one. Cinematheque, August 31 (7:15 p.m.); SFU Woodward’s, September 1 (5 p.m.) -

Girls get a double whammy SUPPORT THE GIRLS Starring Regina Hall. Rated 14A

A loose-limbed indie flick in the

2 vein of early Richard Linklater

or Lisa Cholodenko, Support the Girls is full of funny, lovable performances yoked to a story that’s unusually hard to follow. Not that it matters. This brisk 90-minute film is a return to low-budget roots for writer-director Andrew Bujalski, who helped invent the mumblecore genre with largely improvised charmers like Funny Ha Ha and Computer Chess, before making an ill-fated stab at the Hollywood rom-com in 2015’s Results. Girls stays focused on the all-female crew of Double Whammies, a Hooters-like establishment in Austin, Texas, standing in for every generic strip mall in the USA. The youngsters who work there—all legs, lipstick, and pushup bras—are shepherded by firmbut-fair manager Lisa, played with a hard Texas twang by Regina Hall, who herself waited tables at a breastaurant called Twin Peaks before her Scary Movie breakthrough. Lisa’s days there include dealing with unexpected daycare issues, raising extra money for friends in legal trouble (car wash!), and employees who get too close to customers. “This is a family establishment,” she insists. Today, there’s a burglar caught in the air vent over the kitchen. No wonder the cable TV keeps going out. Staff standouts include stubby spark plug Maci (The Edge of Seventeen’s Haley Lu Richardson) and beanpole Danyelle (newcomer Shayna McHayle), who questions the company policy of never having more than two black or Hispanic girls on a shift. “That’s to guarantee diversity,” explains the club’s weaselly owner, Cubby (James LeGros). In one of the tale’s few diversions from

the main setting, Cubby takes Lisa for a drive and tries to impress her with his macho cred in a road-rage incident that goes hilariously wrong. A few other male figures drift through, and veteran comic Lea DeLaria plays a truck-driving regular who strives to protect the girls and harass them at the same time. “Hey, I’m a lover, not a fighter,” responds one lippy customer she goes after. “And right now I don’t wanna do either!” The filmmaker views all participants with amused affection; his narrative skills are not always as assured. Given the way we’re parachuted into this bare-midriff demimonde with little background allowed, viewers shouldn’t blame themselves for being baffled by Lisa’s relationships with her ex-husband, rivalrous friends, or future employment plans. Human behaviour, not plot construction, is Bujalski’s thing. By the way, he recently wrote the screenplay for Disney’s new live-action reboot of Lady and the Tramp. Youngsters need to know that this title does not refer to another boob-themed establishment.

The positive side of alcohol

2 is given a rare airing in this clunkily titled exercise in anime gone wild. No one is actually supposed to tread on the youth referenced here; it’s misappropriated from a sage, if increasingly blotto, elder (cartoon stalwart Mugihito) who pep-talks her over “imitation denki bran”, a type of brandy dating back to 1880s Tokyo. The teenager in question, a feisty student voiced by Kana Hanazawa, is not actually given a name but is called Otome: “maiden” or “girl” in Japanese,

but now also generic for games aimed at nonboys. The direction by TV veteran Masaaki Yuasa is as peripatetic, and often seemingly formless, as 90 minutes in a packed pachinko parlour. It’s adapted from Tomihiko Morimi’s bestseller about a young woman who spends the night sampling cocktails and searching for a book from her childhood. But it sure doesn’t play out like a normal novel. A slightly older student, referred to by the honorific Senpai (Gen Hoshino), has a mad crush on Otome, but, in timeless rom-com style, lacks the courage to address her. This leads to some serious stalker action, including extra-creepy electronic surveillance—something the movie treats as mostly cute. Well, Otome does pack a mean punch, or “friendly fist”, as she calls her restrained firepower, when guys get handsy. This comes in useful with the collector of woodblock erotica she encounters early in the evening, who’s an equal-opportunity groper. This guy (Ryûji Akiyama) also steals underwear from young men, something that slows down Senpai’s search. Yet another fellow has vowed not to change his tighty-whities until a longlost love returns. Don’t know what the deal is with undies here, but that’s just one of the many elements that blur by in this psychedelically paced adventure from the same warped noggin that brought us 2004’s even weirder Mind Game. Between frantic nods to Nihon pop culture, bibliophilia, and Greek philosophy (old guys do a bizarre “sophists’ dance” at one drinkery), you might not notice that Otome doesn’t have much of an actual personality. In the end, after all that walking, she doesn’t seem any drunker than at the beginning. Nor do we know anything more about her. Frankly, it takes enough effort just to keep up with the pretty colours.

savage love I’m in a pickle. All I want is to ex-

perience touch, intimacy, and sexual pleasure—but without freaking out. I grew up with a lot of negative messages from men due to developing early, as well as having some other physical/sexual trauma (no rape or abuse), but the combination has me seriously fuckedup. Whenever I get close to physical intimacy with someone, I run away. I actually faked an emergency once and physically ran away because I knew sex was a possibility that night. I’m not a virgin—but in those instances, I’ve been really drunk (and experienced no emotional/physical pleasure). This is not what I want for my life. I want a relationship and love, and to be open and comfortable with someone expressing their care for me in a physical way without panicked thoughts flooding my brain. I’ve done lots of therapy, which has helped, but not enough. I recently heard of something called a sexual surrogate. From what I understand, it’s somebody who is trained to therapeutically provide physical touch and intimacy in a controlled and safe environment. Are they legit? > SHE CAN’T ADEQUATELY RELEASE EXTREME DREAD

Sexual surrogates are legit, SCARED, but please don’t call them sexual surrogates. “We’d like to see the language shift back to ‘surrogate partner’, which was the original term,” said Vena Blanchard, president of the International Professional Surrogates Association (IPSA). “Masters and Johnson originated the concept, and their treatment program was based on the theory that many people had problems that required the help of a cooperative partner, and some

people didn’t have partners. So they trained people to work as ‘partner surrogates’. The media took the term ‘partner surrogate’ and changed it to ‘sexual surrogate’ because it sounded sexier. But ‘sexual surrogate’ implies that the work is all about sex.” So if surrogate partner therapy is not about sex—or not all about sex— then what is it primarily about? “Surrogate partner therapy is a therapeutic treatment that combines psychotherapy with experiential learning,” said Blanchard. “It’s a program designed for people like SCARED, for people who struggle with anxiety, panic, and past trauma—things that can distort a person’s experience in the moment.” Surrogate partner therapy happens in stages, with each progressive stage representing another “teeny, tiny baby step”, as Blanchard put it. “The client first works with a legitimate therapist until the therapist thinks the client is ready to work with a surrogate partner,” said Blanchard. “You may start by sitting in opposite chairs and just talking. At some point, they might sit and hold hands, practise relaxation techniques, and focus on simple sensations. In the next session, they might touch each other’s faces with their hands.” Sex can and does sometimes occur in the later stages of surrogate partner therapy, SCARED, but it doesn’t always and it’s not the goal—healing is. “By having these repeated safe experiences, in a context where there’s no pressure, and consent is emphasized, and the patient is in control,” said Blanchard, “someone liked SCARED can learn to manage her anxiety, and her prior negative experiences are replaced with positive new experiences.”

> BY DAN SAVAGE While I had her on the phone, I asked Blanchard the first question many people have about surrogate partners: Are surrogate partners sex workers? “A sex worker offers a sexual experience—that is the primary intention of what is a business transaction,” said Blanchard. “What a surrogate partner offers are healing and education. And while healing and education might also take place in a sex-work environment, and while some form of sexual contact might take place in surrogate partner therapy, the primary intention is different. A patient working with a surrogate partner is there to heal old injuries or break out of bad patterns so they can have a relationship in the future. People go to sex workers for an immediate experience—the agenda is sexual and about right now, not therapeutic and about the future.” Then I asked Blanchard the second question many people have about surrogate partner therapy: is it legal? “There’s no place that it’s illegal,” said Blanchard. “There’s never been a court case challenging it. In California, where surrogate partner therapy is most common, no one has ever in 50 years challenged it.” If you’re interested in working with a surrogate partner, SCARED, you can contact the referrals coordinator at IPSA’s website: surrogatetherapy.org. Finally, SCARED, the number of trained and qualified surrogate partners is relatively small—IPSA has just 70 members—so you might need to go where most of those trained and qualified surrogate partners are in order to work with one. (The part of California that isn’t on fire is lovely this time of year.)

“Since there aren’t many qualified surrogate partners available,” said Blanchard, “people sometimes need to travel to another location and work intensively. People will come for two weeks and work every single day with a therapist and a surrogate partner.”

My partner and

at my place. We kissed and got naked, but I couldn’t get hard. We watched porn. That always works, but not this time. Finally, he played with my nipples and—presto chango—there was a happy ending at last! (Plus, it was a learning experience. I found out I like having my nipples licked, a lot!) I’m worried this will continue to happen. It’s like I’m thinking too much. I deal with anxiety and depression every day, and this is part of why I’ve been single for so long. I’m not feeling the urge to end the relationship yet, but I’ve been a wreck since we started dating. I’m attracted to this guy, but I can’t get turned on. Is this like not having the urge to eat when you’re nervous? Do I just need to wait it out until I’m comfortable with this guy, and hope he sticks around long enough to stick it in me?

I have been together for 11 years and have always had a great sex life. I love his cock, we have similar appetites, and until recently everything was great. But he has always had an aversion to blood. He is a pacifist, a vegetarian, and a recovering Muslim, so as much as I don’t understand his fear, I would never push him to have sex during my period. The problem is now I bleed whenever we have sex—just a tiny bit, but that’s enough to kill it for him, and the sex is immediately over. We already have enough > LACKING IN MY PANTS constraints with differing schedules, kids, lack of privacy, periods. This is a big deal for me, and I don’t know how You’re attracted to this guy, LIMP, and you’re turned on by him, and you’re to deal with it. Any ideas? > AFRAID TO BLEED capable of getting hard.
