W
elcome to Issue 11 of The Gig Guide. I can hardly believe how quickly the time is flying by! We’re into October now, and I’ve already been hearing mention of the ‘Christmas’ word! This issue we’ve got interviews galore for all you readers who like to get to know the bands. Personally, I particularly enjoyed talking to Jaret Reddick from Bowling for Soup; who was down to earth, laid back and just seems to enjoy living life to the full... a mantra that we could all easily live by! It came as a bit of a shock to learn of Kevin Iverson’s departure from local band Springtide Cavalry. I really thought they were a band that could easily have ‘made it’, for lack of a more fitting term. However, we wish him all the best with his new project, and to Andy & Sean of STC for their future plans. There’s a plethora of great music to be heard out there, so check out what’s on near you tonight!

In April and May this year, the first leg of their tour sold out in record time, and received spectacular reactions and reviews, with every venue on the tour packed to the rafters and the band's classic tracks sounding 'eerily relevant' to the current times according to The Independent On Sunday. With The Daily Telegraph praising 'one of the greatest
live bands this country has ever produced' and The Evening Standard acclaiming a band 'spectacularly and life affirmingly reborn'. The second leg of the tour sees the band visit those concert halls that missed out the first time, which includes Margate’s Winter Gardens on 7th November! Unfortunately all tickets have now been sold for the event but if you are lucky enough to be going, it promises to be one night not easily forgotten!

Interview: Bowling For Soup
U
BY STUART KEELER nless you’ve been living under a rock for most of the century, you can’t have missed this group of Texas fun-rockers and their infectious songs playing all over the airwaves.
Now on the verge of releasing their 10th fulllength album; ‘Sorry for Partyin’’, they are about to embark on a UK tour which includes a visit to Margate’s Winter Gardens on October 21st. We caught up with frontman Jaret Reddick for a chat on the bands long career, always having a laugh and his hatred of ‘space invaders’!... So Jaret, how’ve you been? “Been good man, you know… gearing up for a long few months on the road but good! I’m hanging out in Texas right now and we’ve been doing some sporadic shows here and there over the 4 and 5 day runs plus trying to get this album ready to release.” Getting pretty busy then! “I will say this… we were out at the weekend and there were some long drives, but basically that just means for us that somebody does the driving and we all just drink beer!… but that makes the next day really, really long. I was a little tired but I’ve recovered nicely now going into the week.” The band have been together for 15 years, are you still as close as now? “Probably more so.. for us we’re definitely the exception to the rule.. we’ve toured with bands that absolutely can’t stand each other, fight and have huge differences over money and where they are going as a band. For us we are more focused now then we ever have been, and we’re best friends so even over the year break we talked everyday. As far as personally and professional… we are definitely more on the same page than ever!” That is fairly unique for a band, it’s great to see! “Yeah, most marriages don’t even last 15 years anymore!… we spend more time together than most married people. If you add up the amount of time we’ve been together over years, it’s pretty impressive that we still can even have a conversation that’s interesting, but we somehow find a way to entertain each other constantly.” p10 | The Gig Guide | October - November
There must have been some interesting moments along the way, any funny stories you can share? “Oh my goodness, there are just so many! It’s constant humour for us, everyday we’re like a walking TV show, it’s always something and there’s always some way to get each other going… and not just funny stuff but life experiences that we have with one another, such as going to different countries and visiting China, Japan and Korea and all these different places and coming to the UK 16 times… who gets to go to the UK 16 times?! It’s pretty amazing. It’s hard to think of one story to tell you, because it’s every fricking day!” Where did the name ‘Bowling For Soup’ come from? “We got the name from Steve Martin who was a stand up comedian before his acting career. On his album ‘Wild and Crazy Guy’, he talks about a television show he’s working on called ‘Bowling for Shit’. We jokingly called our band ‘Bowling for Shit’ at first and then never changed it… we booked our first gig and decided we gotta figure something out so we changed three letters and made it ‘Soup’. Although I’m sure there are readers out there that actually still think of us as ‘Bowling for Shit’. You can just sort of like interchange the two!” Your songs are clearly about your life experiences and everyday occurrences, but what would you say has influenced your musical style and do you look up to any bands? “Most definitely. As far as like getting me into music singing wise, my parents sang all the time and so I was really into the eagles and sing-song bands like that. When I got to my teenage years, hair metal got really big, with bands like Mötley
be that guy that has ten records and is just preaching “this is gonna be our best thing yet” cos most of the time, nine times out of ten bands that have ten albums, by their tenth album leave something to be desired but I don’t feel like we’ve done that. I feel like we took the right approach and took a little time off and taken a little time on the album and rediscovered how awesome it is to be in Bowling for Soup and we wrote a freaking amazing bowling for soup album and I do hands down believe that it is our best album ever.” …and you’ll be touring the UK soon for is it the third time? “It’s actually our 16th trip to UK! If you count festivals and stuff like that, but as far as full Crüe, Rat & Twisted Sister were sort of like the on tours I think this is like 8 (I think). We huge hip-hop stars of the time… they had the started coming over there in 2000, with money and the girls and just always looked like Reading and Leeds and our first tour in 2001, they were having a good time. And so that’s the we were over there two more times by 2004, I kind of music that I was just like “man that would think we’ve done two to three tours on each be cool to do that one day”. Those bands album since then so we are definitely seasoned definitely I think got me into wanting to get into a UK vets!” band and I think as far as my writing style, it’s influenced by that and growing up in Texas where So how do you find the British crowds there’s lot of country music and a lot of country compared to America or elsewhere in the music tells stories, so I think that’s where the world? story telling comes from… people like Willy Nelson “I think the British audience really get us, you and a lot of country artists tell you an amazing know, and I think it’s funny cos a lot of times story in a matter of minutes.” our labels say “I just don’t think they’re gonna You’ve produced an impressive collection of albums during your career, is there any stopping you guys?! What motivates you to sit down and write more songs? “Motivated by everyday life, TV, and just watching things around me and you know it’s pretty easy to tell whenever you listen to our albums and especially this new album. It’s almost like listening to Bowling for Soup is equivalent to sitting with Bowling for Soup in a bar and just watching us to see what happens!… that’s a Bowling for Soup album. These are the kind of things we sit around and talk about. For us, still being able to have fun with it and not change style-wise over the course of 10 albums and 15 years you know.” Which brings us onto your latest album; ‘Sorry For Partyin’ (which is released on 12th October in the UK), what can we expect to see on this release? “It is definitely the best yet and honestly I sort of went into this with the idea like “I’m not gonna
get the joke on this song or whatever” and I’m like “I think they give the Brits enough credit as far as what their knowledge of American humour is and how they get the BFS attitude and vibe. Music fans period for us, I think people that like our band listen to us because we’re not down in the dumps and basically just making them think about s*** that they already think sucks. For us it’s like… hey yeah the world sucks, but look… somebody lit a fart!! It may seem childish but it’s real… that’s who we are. I feel like our British fans completely get that… we’re not putting on some act, we’re up on stage being exactly who we are and I think it comes across.”
Is it true you guys never prepare a setlist for your shows and decide what to play as you go along? “That’s true…we never have and um don’t really intend to start. We’re adding a few things to the show and a couple of the things require us to play to a click track ‘cos it’s gotta

Interview: Bowling For Soup sync up with some other stuff that’s going on. Right now we’re in the process of trying to figure out how we’re gonna do that and still not use a setlist. We don’t want the show to change, we wanna go out and do whatever we do and most of the bands have to have somebody cue that and everybody does it.. um we’ll see how that works out… we may just scrap the whole idea because the last thing we wanna do is disrupt the flow and the fun of the show. I wanna be able to stop in the middle of any song and go… “Hey,... a girl!”” That’s quite a refreshing idea, but have you ever argued onstage about what to play next? “umm, when we very, very first started, I wouldn’t say we argued but when we very first started there were never a lot of people at the shows, sometimes there was nobody at the show but we would still play so that we could get our 20 dollars and four beers, and you know that’s kind of the reason we never used a setlist cos nobody ever wanted to do it and we’d go back and be like what songs do you wanna play and everybody would just sit there. I would get a little pissed and I’d be like “come on, man a little input here.” But then sort of one day it occurred to me, you know really it’s all about the flow. You know what song to play based on where the last song left off and where you feel like the next song needs to go. It’s really funny cos they usually know what song I’m gonna play before I play it. Even whenever I do something where its like we haven’t played this song in like ten months and I’ll be like.. “here’s one I feel like this audience should hear right now,. And Eric would come over and would be like dude I knew that’s what you were gonna do” So you’re always thinking the same thing? “Absolutely, I think that just sort of comes from 15 years of being on the same stage for sometimes 2-3 hours a night depending on how drunk we are and really feeding off of one another”
p12 | The Gig Guide | October - November
You’re also filming a new DVD documentary (called “My Home Town”), what are we going to see on this? “It’s on the books as far as planned! We actually haven’t done it, we were supposed to film it back in June and we got wrapped up in filming a bunch of other stuff and just finishing the album and we went back in the studio and finished a few more songs and it sort of got away from us and the next thing we’re playing live again and we had this and that happening, it’s still gonna happen but we didn’t get to it as soon as we thought we
would. I definitely think before the end of the year we will have it at least filmed. It’s actually called my home town and it’s just a view at, like a tour of our home town… it’s totally done for the fans… I think some people find it interesting but it’s basically like us going to our elementary school and telling stories like “this is my elementary school… one day I stuck my butt out at the 6th graders and had to go home”.. kind of like that thing.. everybody will tell some stories, and people know where we came from.”
I read that you can speak Mandarin, Urdu and Huttese. Can you give us a phrase in each? “That is completely untrue and that got me in a lot of trouble when we went to China. None of them… that original bio is completely false and it was supposed to be funny but then we get to china and so we’re having this huge press
conference cos we’re doing this huge corporate show and there’s cameras there from every single Asian show that’s there, and they absolutely thought I spoke mandarin, and were just like “Ok so for Jaret, you can ask your questions in English or mandarin” so I’m like “Ok that was a complete joke” and it took a while to explain to them that we were just kidding!” Favourite bar snack? “We like really hot peanuts.. like chili peanuts” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “A house cat.. I’m not a fighter, I’m a lover” What would be your message to the world? “Be a good person, tell the truth as much as you can, and enjoy everyday.”

rchie Wahs Wahs are a fourpiece band that has an indie punk rock sound with a dash of reggae thrown in for good measure. Being described as having quite a tasty sound the guy’s tracks are quite a satisfying meal for your ears and are something refreshingly different for the music scene. Formed in January 2007, they were booked for their first gig at the impressive Sittingbourne Culture Festival. From this successful and well liked performance, the guys started to get bookings all over Kent. Unfortunately unforeseen circumstances meant the band had to take a short break from performing in 2008. However this did not mean all was lost and meant the guys had time to work on new material and get ready to unleash their quirky music to all their eagerly waiting fans and venues all over Kent.
After seeing their lively foot tapping performances their music is something you can’t help but like and want to hear more of. Who are the Archie Wah Wahs? Rich: “Archie Wah Wahs are four people called Richard J. Braund (lead vocals, rhythm guitar and keyboard), Andrew J.Martin (lead guitar, keyboard and backing vocals), Jimmy P. Decarte (bass and backing vocals) and Quinn (drums) and one EagleOwl called Rupert T. EagleOwl (song ideas and mumpet, which is a high pitched mumbling sound that very loosely resembles a trumpet).” Tell us the story of the Archie Wah Wahs, how and when did you guys get together? R: “The brief version is that Richard J Braund left his old band in 2007 to create one
p14 | The Gig Guide | October - November
that played his songs properly. Got some friends together, including Andrew J Martin to start the new band, but two of them couldn’t commit, so got two more friends, Phil Ferrer and Jimmy P Decarte, started playing gigs. Then had to let our drummer Phil (who we still love) go and got a new drummer in, Quinn, then Suddenly Rupert EagleOwl turned up after Richard J Braund liberated him from the Orphanage. For the full story visit our Myspace page; myspace.com/archiewahwahs”
That’s five by my count who is this EagleOwl character? R: “He is my best friend who helps with my creativity. Lets just say he is a big part of me.” Ok then moving on. The name is quite a cool one who picked it and where did it come from?
R: “It’s a Desmond Dekker song. The reason we used it is because all through my life, whenever I hurt myself, instead of saying the traditional ‘Sh**, F***, C***, Sh**!!!!’ I always said ‘ARRRRRRRCHIE WAH WAHHHHHHH!!!!!’” So for those of us who don’t know, what do you guys sound like? R: “Catchy indie/punk/ska songs with lyrics about broken hearts and unhappy endings, but I hope my feelings of optimism and hopefulness come through as well.” Thanks for that insight. What have been the highlights so far? R: “My highlights have been, invading the stage of ‘Needs Must’ (another Medway band, that we like) getting the singer ‘Pat the Hat’ on the floor, stuffing Archie Wah Wahs flyers into his mouth and then stage diving on to the only person near the stage and swinging on their back. Oh and a couple of weeks ago, me and Rupert watched a caterpillar build it’s chrysalis by the river.” Jimmy: “Without sounding corny and clichéd, there have been lots. When you start a band, you have no idea how things will be as there is no real master plan for getting any success (unless you want to go on X Factor and trash like that!), so you have to appreciate all the little things that you experience like getting your first gig, getting people dancing to your songs and also people telling you that they enjoyed your set. These may seem like small things to a lot of people but it makes the practising, the lugging of your gear and the late nights (especially when you have to get up early for work the next day!!) worth it. Its great being in a band with your mates and because we all
genuinely get on, it makes being in the band a pleasure and I am personally very proud of how things have gone so far. The free Cocaine and unlimited groupies perk of being in band hasn’t reached us yet though, maybe next year!!” Andy: “What I love about being in this band is that we all really get along as mates and in the practice room we are good communicators. Also with our music we are individually inspired by different artists, some the same but some different. There are no boundaries to our song writing and everyone pretty much plays whatever they like so long as it fits.” Are you working on any new material? And if so when and where can your fans get to it? R: “Quinn, our new drummer is still getting to grips with the material, so we are gradually trying to learn new songs. Myself and Rupert EagleOwl have written a lot together recently, and Jimmy is trying to contribute as well. New songs can be heard at our gigs, visit the myspace for listings and we’ll record new songs just as soon as we have enough money. So about a week, next decade.”
What musical influences are behind the Archie’s? R: “I could list off a load of my favourite bands, but I don’t think any bands has influenced me more than Nirvana to play the guitar and sing in the first place and the Beatles to write varied types of music.” J: “My personal influences are Oasis, Smiths, Joy Division and Soul Wax” A: “All of the above, plus Paul Weller, Van Morrison and Kings of Leon.” Do any of you have any cheeky stories about each other that you would like to confess to me and our readers? R: “I haven’t known Quinn long enough to have any stories about him, yet. But Andy can’t come to Jimmy’s home town of Sittingbourne without getting abused, the first time we went, he got chips from the Kebab house and tried to take the piss out of some girls when they verbally abused him and knocked his food out his hands, they were only about 14! Then six months later, he came back and the same girl saw him in the High Street and her and all her friends were laughing at him again, ha ha. ..and Jimmy once got a reach

Feature: Archie Wah Wahs around from Kriss Akabusi, whilst being strangled by Michael Hutchence.” J: “Quinn’s nipples taste like Pineapple. If you put some mature cheddar cheese in your mouth and then lick his nipples, it’s quite a sensational taste!!” A: “While we were without a drummer a short while back, we played acoustic and I got a minor technical fault. Rich freestyled a new song blowing trumpet sounds with his lips to break the silence, Jimmy picked up the tambourine and I joined in playing the fish... was totally unexpected but the crowd loved it and that’s what matters!” What's a fish? Nevermind. I particularly like your track ‘Stale Bread & Lumpy Milk’ where did the inspiration for the song come from, not from the contents someone’s fridge I hope? R: “It’s about a girl I dated for a few months, when I was 18. She had a messed up
childhood (which I write about in a song called ‘No Luck’) and she never really got over it. She passed away in 2005, but I wrote this song before then. Every now and then, I blow a kiss up to Heaven for her and yes that was the contents of her fridge. What’s the best venue you have played? A: “Beacon Court Tavern in Gillingham.. they have a back stage room and a wicked sound system!” R: “My favourite venue, is a Gillingham Pub called ‘The Barge’, where we play at the open mic night, first Wednesday of every month. We also played an Oxjam fundraiser there, for ‘Medway Eyes’ who are a group of Photographers, run by Lisa and Phil Dillon. They are doing great things for music and art in the local area. I love the Barge, just because you get all types of music down there and everyone is respectful of whatever you do.”
p16 | The Gig Guide | October - November
Where would you love to play? R: “At a Nature reserve, where all the animals are free and happy and Glastonbury.” J: “We want to start gigging in London and places like Brighton pretty soon, so I guess the answer to the question is anywhere in London and Brighton!” What’s playing on Archie’s stereo at the minute? R: “I’ve got about 12,000 tracks on itunes and I usually put it on random. Been listening to a lot of folk recently and a French group called M83. Oh and Rupert EagleOwls slightly cheesy, tongue in cheek solo music at myspace.com/ruperteagleowl” A: “I have been listening to the original Fleetwood Mac stuff in my car lately if you like a bit of ‘rhythm and blues’. Nothing like the modern day R'n'B chart sh**e you get these days. Also been listening to The Cure, Franz Ferdinand, Be Your Own Pet and The Ting Tings.”
J: “Without trying to sound like a miserable old git a lot of the new music around is pretty bland and after you have listened to a song a couple of times, it becomes boring or you don’t hear it anymore because record companies want to throw the ‘next big thing’ down your throats again. Despite this, I’m getting into a band called Grizzly Bear and I also really like White Lies as well, so there are some golden nuggets in the big shiny turd that is ‘modern music’!!” R: “You do sound like a miserable old git!!!!!” J: “I know, ‘cos I am.” Got any favourite local bands? A: “When we first started out gigging we played a couple of venues with The Racket who had a right lively kick to their repertoire. Sadly that band is reconstructing at the moment but check out their myspace they still have a few tracks on there. Also look out for ‘The Onlookers’ and ‘Needs Must’ because they rock!” R: “My two favourite local acts are ‘Slap Alice’ who writes beautifully dark lyrics, over catchy acoustic guitar and a folk duo called ‘Falling Lucid’ who have really good songs that sound current and old at the same time. Also like ‘Tyrannosaurus Alan’, ‘The Racket’ (Nick Curtis and Dave Tabor), ‘The Flowing’, ‘Didi Bergman’, ‘The Gizmo’, ‘The ShagMonroes’, ‘Unlucky Fried Kitten’ and ‘Needs Must’.” J: “Got to say our partners in crime, ‘Nick Racket and Dave T’. Also, ‘The Suggestions’, ‘The Flowing’ and ‘Tyrannosaurus Alan’. My personal favourites are a band from Dartford called ‘Falzones’. They have got some wicked tunes and are probably (in my opinion) the best band we have played with.”
What do you think of the Kent music scene? R: “Musically, I think it’s great. Really diverse, but it’s let down by a lack of good venues in my opinion.” Love or hate? R: “The Archies love to love. I once overheard my Brother saying a positive mantra to himself “I am powerful and I am loved.....I am powerful and I love.....I am powerful and I love it” That made me chuckle, but if it works maybe that’s the philosophy to live by, LOVE!!!!!” Sweet or savoury snacks? R: “Don’t try and probe into our psyches with a question of such depth, answering this would leave us psychologically naked.” Cats or dogs? R: “I’ve always had and always loved cats, don’t really get on with Dogs they’re too needy.” A: “Dags.” If you could be an animal what would you be? R: “I’d be a Shark and team up with George as Detectives Sharky and George, Crime Busters of the Sea, Sharky and George, solve any Mystery.” J: “A Hyena, I reckon it would be a proper laugh being one of
them (see what I did there!?!?….)” A: “A dog because it gets looked after, gets fed, gets a bed, gets a walk a day, chases cats, can play ball, and gets to piss in public without getting arrested... not a bad lifestyle for an animal if you ask me.” A: can I ask one last Question of my own????? Quinn, what is your Surname?????? Quinn: “Brierley.” A: “Thanks” J: “Ha ha, Quinn isn’t even really here” R: “Does he even exist, or is that another thing we need to talk to our therapists about?????” J: “Bye everyone, stay classy” A: “and thanks for stopping by” J: “but mainly, stay Classy” R: “by the beard of Zeus”

“W
ho’s playing this evening?” a passerby enquires of the friendly doorman, outside Maidstone club; ‘The Loft’. “Reef” comes the prompt reply. Quickly and quietly corrected by two bystander photographers, he adds “Erm I mean - Them Is Me!” He could be easily forgiven, however. Reef were a hugely successful UK band, their anthem “Place Your Hands” still a firm student favourite – it can still be heard over many a PA system during intervals.
Inside the club is dark and moody, the dance floor is entirely empty and a few people are propping up the florescent neon-lit bar at one end of the room. The smoking area door flaps to and fro; thanks to Smokefree England most of the potential audience for the support acts are outside exercising their right to poor health and bad breath.
Meanwhile, Allegro are in full swing. Catchy, cheeky music, reminiscent of The Fratellis and Kaiser Chiefs, but with a more earthy feel to it. Austin, the photogenic lead singer, gives it his all in a very passionate and energetic performance, whilst occasionally flashing a tattoo that claims “Rock Music Saves Lives”. Undeservedly, Allegro are playing mostly to an empty floor. The non-smoking, drinking few are politely listening to their music from the bar, some are tapping their feet, and occasionally some even politely clap. The band endured their ‘supportband cross’ bravely, and put on a pretty solid performance. A short time after, without any attempt at a grandiose entrance, Them Is Me saunter on stage with a cheery wave to the suddenly-sizeable crowd. First impressions are that two of the band, Stringer and Bessant, are very, very tall.
They launch into a dark and moody rendition of ‘Burning Through Black’. The club suddenly awakens, and the crowd is instantly hooked. Young ladies start dancing, hoping to get Gary’s attention, whilst guys nod their heads appreciatively to the beat. It is an instant response, and a very positive one.
Vocalist Gary Stringer delivers a solid blend of strong bottom end, almost operatic vocals, and then as the chorus takes off, that “Marmite voice” of old - the “Reef sound” - soars away alongside the escalating music, sending prickles down the back of your neck. Everything about his voice is precise, controlled and powerful, and he remains one of the most impressive and unique rock vocalists around.
At the other end of the stage, fellow Reef veteran and bassist, Jack Bessant towers above the audience, a real-life olde-worlde bearded giant who reassembles a rock 'n' roll version of King Neptune, having discarded his trident and p20 | The Gig Guide | October - November
Chinese takeaway in favour of thundering bass lines, and the odd cheeky V-sign cast into the crowd.
Throughout the evening, Stringer’s incredible vocals are complimented perfectly by the searing riffs from the guitar of Jonas Jalhay who, contrary to what his youthful looks may suggest, is a very accomplished guitarist - very reminiscent in looks and talent to the
And not many people could bellow “Are you ready for Caveman Love?” to a crowd of club-goers, and get away with it!
The evening ends all-too soon with a bouncy rendition of ‘They Won’t Be There For You’. Gary warmly kudizes the crowd for “coming to see a band you’ve never ‘eard of” and the audience chuckles at his modesty. They came because they loved Reef; now they clearly love Them Is Me too.
legendary Tom Morello. A pretty successful solo artist in his own right, but also a true professional, he fits into the band as if it was always and only this way. Like a modern day Rhodes and Osbourne, the chemistry between guitarist and vocalist is palpable.
All of this sits firmly on the solid foundations laid down by drummer Nathan ‘Tugg’ Curran. Formerly with Basement Jaxx, Curran belts out some powerful rhythm work, working up a visible sweat within a couple of songs and seems very comfortable in this mainly dancemusic venue.
The band fire off some of their great songs - the extremely memorable and perhaps most Reefesque tune ‘Let The Sun’ being sung loudest back at the band by the audience. Gary meanwhile hits one of the highest, and longest live notes they are ever likely to witness, and receives tumultuous applause for his efforts.
It is obvious that Them Is Me, are not Reef. Neither however, are they a band trying not to be Reef, and this is perhaps where their brilliance lies. Reef has been suitably placed without over-sentimentality and overbearing, alongside the likes of Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chili Peppers as a significant “influence” to their sound, managing to please the old fans, but allowing a whole new generation to enjoy this brand new band’s music afresh too.
One of the darkest songs on the album, ‘The Skull Behind’ transports the audience back to the days of Black Sabbath. A girl at the front starts head banging, her ultra-long hair thrashing around to the music. This is real old school rock.
The gig is loud, but intimate. At times, Gary strides off of the stage into the crowd, places his solid metal microphone stand down and continues to sing as members of the audience slap him on the back, shake his hand, and generally take advantage of the big man’s generosity and friendliness towards his fans.

Profile: The Kingsdown Band
The Kingsdown Band
T
he Kingsdown Band have been one of Kent’s foremost function bands for the last 20 years, and with the current line-up are as good as any similar ‘professionals’ band.
The band was formed when Terry Poulson & Roger Cramphorn met at a Kingsdown School function in 1989, discovering they had both played through the 60’s and notably; both performed at the legendary “Top Ten Club” and “Star” Club in Hamburg during that period. Neither having picked up a guitar for some years, it seemed like a good idea to get together. Two other members were added and a four piece 60’s band was formed. When the band inevitably started gigging, the name “The Kingsdown Band” was the obvious choice as 3 of them lived in the Kingsdown village. “We were fortunate to live in the Deal area, as there were several excellent brass musicians there, having settled here when they left the Royal Marines”. A three piece brass section consisting of Andy Cunningham, Mick Murray and Tony Willis, was added some years later. After several personnel changes along the way, we now have probably the best line up that the band has ever had, and our numbers have swelled to 12
musicians! We are delighted to have four superb vocalists; Jaeger Grace Jones, Marianne Rhodes, Danny Herbert and Simon Foster (also a vocalist with ‘The Flying Pickets’). Completing the line-up is Paul Georgeson (Lead Guitar), Simon Jackson (Drums) and Paul Stewart (Keyboards). Both Terry & Roger are still with the band and having just celebrated 20 years since formation, they are looking forward to the future with even more enthusiasm. www.thekingsdownband.co.uk

Feature: Antfestive
BY JO LAWFORD jo@jeemo.co.uk
T
he creator of Antfest is bringing Antfestive back to the Beacon Court in Gillingham on the 23rd December.
Antfestive is well known for putting on fantastic events with some of the best local acts supporting them. The line up in December is yet another testament to this with The Archie Wah Wahs, The Sketch, One Day Elliott, The Startover, Floors and Walls and another three acts who are yet to be confirmed. The massively musically crammed evening will start at around 7pm and is a cool price of just £5 on the door. As with all Antfestive events the proceeds of the night will go to charity and this time to the The Arethusa Centre in Upnor. The story behind the creation of Antfestive started back in 2006 when Adam D’Souza lost his dad Gerard D’Souza to a heart failure in 2005. Adam’s close friend Anthony Martin really wanted to do something to help his friend so he decided to gather all the people he had met over the last 10 years of being a musician and get them to perform at a one-day festival called Antfest. All the money raised by Antfest would go to the British Heart Foundation, which helps to support people who suffer heart problems and their families. p24 | The Gig Guide | October - November
After the success of Antfest Anthony then decided that he could do so much more and have another event, which would happen later in the year. This would not only raise more money and awareness but would also give people something to look forward to on those dark wintry nights. This was when Antfestive was born. The Antfestive and Antfest gigs have played host to some fantastic great local names who have gone on to find massive opportunities not just at home but away too. Kingskin is one example who has graced the Antfestive stage and gone onto find success internationally and are currently recording with Steve Albini who produced In Utero by Nirvana. More success stories are One Day Elliott who have sold a whopping 10,000 records and have two American tours under their belts and Floors And Walls who won the Global Battle Of The Bands competition beating 26 bands from around the world. Lets not forget the other bands who have helped to make these events a memorable and important part of the local gig diary. Los Salvadores, Aliquot Flow, Rage Against The Latrine, Timothy Edwards, Hurstpierpoint, Mexico FALLZ, Strangeday and 3dBsDOWN have all supported these
events in the past along with many other acts. I could name them all but the list would be endless! What makes these events extra special is that all the guys including Anthony have been in bands since they were 15 so there is a real sense of camaraderie between everyone, which is clear when you see the guys performing. There is one story from Antfest, which is proof of this, and it happened last year when disaster struck and the singer for One Day Elliot couldn’t make it. The rest of the band still wanted to perform so all the singers from the other bands chose a song by One Day Elliott to sing with them. This was pretty amazing to see everyone come together and help each other for a cause greater than their own. It felt like a Band Aid moment, but on a much smaller scale!
It’s moments like these, which gives Antfestive and Antfest a unique feel and a true sense of community between the bands. It also shows that these guys are not just in it for the money but for the love of performing as well. Although Antfestive does support the local music scene by raising awareness for the bands that play it also has a more serious message, which is to raise money and awareness for the charities it supports. Antfestive is an evening of truly excellent music with a caring message behind it. It is truly amazing when music is used for something greater than profit, don’t you think?

Michael Lake: So What is Jazz?
I
BY MICHAEL LAKE ts 1am in the morning. I’m relaxing with my good marra Phil in his new London pad, situated in trendy Shad Thames. We have just returned from the O2 Arena having seen the Kings of Leon raise the synthetic roof. Phil is high on the music and the attentions of an attractive female student encountered at the gig, and I am deaf in one ear. Phil suggests that the disproportionate number of women at the concert was due to the thigh thumping music, a reasoned conclusion given the aesthetics of the band members. Let’s face it, Caleb Followill is hardly easy on the eye, even for the partially sighted. Anyhow, after a brief discussion over the nature of our nightcap (40 something hot chocolate) we enter into the following conversation; Phil Me Phil Me Phil Me Phil Me
“What music do you wanna listen to?” “Something jazzy and easy on the ear.” “How about Jim Morrison?” “Don’t you mean James Morrison?” “Err nope, only got Doors stuff.” (slightly condescendingly) “It’s hardly jazz!” (impatiently) “You keep going on about jazz, what the bloody hell is it?” (Pausing and looking into distance) “Well mate, according to the Wikipedia the word ‘jazz’ was first used at the turn of the century to mean spirit, pep or effervescence. Jazz was apparently first applied to music in Chicago in 1915. Since those early days it has evolved many forms including swing, bebop, hard bop, cool, soul, latin and latterly free form. (nb. free form is to jazz what
Damien Hirst is to art; shocking, incomprehensible and mostly rubbish). Jazz historians will tell you that the root notes were first sounded by African American slaves as expressions of optimism and liberty. As early as the 1820’s slaves would congregate in Congo square in New Orleans to demonstrate their percussive genius. It was not until the mid nineteenth century however that access was permitted to instruments such as the trumpet and piano which led to the creation of blues, ragtime and later improvised jazz. Mississippi Delta steamboats played host to black musicians who began to ‘rag’ the melody (i.e. improvise) bringing with it elements of blues, african rhythms and songs. It was in the big commercial brass bands that African rhythms merged with European harmonies and the jazz sound was introduced to the mainstream. What makes jazz music distinctive is it’s reliance upon improvisation and swinging the rhythm. In it’s evolution jazz shares many similarities with rock ’n’ roll and punk. It seems incredulous now but in the 1950’s, bebop was banned in Californian nightspots for fear of it being a bad influence. Until the civil rights movement, pupils could be expelled from playing jazz in some American schools. Eat your heart out Jonny and Sid.” Phil (wearily) “Great. I’m knackered and off to bed.” October - November | The Gig Guide | p37
Michael Lake: Ian Shawcross at the Tiger Inn
End of an era… nearly BY MICHAEL LAKE
Ian Shawcross and Friend’s 26th anniversary gig, was both a celebration of one of the longest residencies in jazz history and marked the beginning of the end of an era. This was announced by the host as the penultimate gig before the axe falls on Monday jazz nights at the Tiger Inn, which have been a part of Stowting folklore for as long as folk has been lore. Ian Shawcross is something of a local jazz legend, a slightly more gracefully ageing Chet Baker. He (probably) won’t mind me revealing that he is in his 72nd year. Ian could be mistaken for a grumpy Yorkshire b*****d, a bit of a Boycs, except that he is of lancastrian extract and as my brief (in between set) chat revealed he is a genuine lover of music and jolly nice chap. He was born in Farnworth just outside Bolton. Both his parents were pub piano players and local entertainers. His other key musical influence was his brother who was a bit of a jazzer and fan of Duke Ellington. Ellington’s big band was the breeding ground of some of the all time great trumpet players including Clark Terry and Nat Adderley both of whom were inspirational to the young aspiring Shawcross. His own distinguished musical career included fifteen years as lead trumpet with the marines band, a number of dates at the Albert hall, followed by 28 years of teaching brass instruments.
As for the gig, the Tiger Inn was packed to the hops with musicians, diners, friends and followers all paying tribute to the sizable contribution Ian has made to the Kent jazz scene. The list of local musicians who have sat in on Monday nights at the Tiger is a long one. Among the 14 musicians who were on show the saxophone section alone is worth a mention, including the lively Ivan Thompson, Dave Corsby, Uncle George Reed plus guests Will from Poland and Gary Barnacle. I was told by Dom Shawcross (son and keyboardist) that Gary Barnacle had played sax on Al Green’s ‘Lets Stay together’ but over the course of the evening had heard his father recount tales of less believable exploits by band guests. Suspecting a wind up I checked out his credentials. While I couldn’t find any reference to this event, I was impressed to find out that a moustached Gary Barnacle was allegedly involved in the Clash’s infamous rooftop pigeon shoot and played sax on Combat Rock. Now that is a story. The set was a veritable pick and mix of tunes including swinging versions of ‘Bare necessities’, ‘Cantaloupe Island’ and the Beatles classic ‘Eleanor Rigby’. Guest vocalists included the unforgettable Joyce singing a Duke Ellington number and Sandra adding a touch of class to ‘Summertime’. All told it was a cracking evening of jazz and ribaldry. In the words of Ian S “playing with great musicians in fantastic atmosphere has been a real luxury”. There is no doubt that Monday nights at the Tiger will never be the same again. I have a feeling however that in true Ali fashion this legend will return ;). In the words of Mr Ali “I will be back”. October - November | The Gig Guide | p39
Interview: Headlock
BY ABBY KEDWELL I decided that I’d meet the band for the interview where we had met before; The View in Folkestone. Headlock performed for a cancer research charity event and left a lasting mark on the crowd. The event was such a success they have set another date for yet another appearance. Get your diaries out and pencil in 16th October 2009 at The View. There will be regular plugs on Km Fm radio and lots of giveaways. When asked what kind of music they played we must have sat there for at least 10 minutes thinking of a perfect selection of words to describe the sound, and eventually decided upon “Acoustic rock-funk groove”! What are your hopes for the future? Joe: “I’d like our songs to be hummed in queue’s everywhere. I want to see beyond the bubble of being in a local band.” John: “Support for major bands and making a new genre of music to talk about.” Adam: “Recognition for being original.” Steve: “Have fun.” Who would you say your muse is? John: “In Life: My parents. In Music: Marvin Gaye, George Clinton.” Adam: “In Life: Peace & freedom. In Music: Kurt Cobain, Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley.” Steve: “In Life: Family and friends. In Music: James Brown, Buddy Rich, Led Zeppelin.” Joe: “In Life: My dad and his classic records. In Music: Peter Green, Stevie Ray Vaughan”
p40 | The Gig Guide | October - November
Describe the band in one word? Joe: “Groovy.” Adam: “Funky.” John: “Fresh.” Steve: “Hot, Hot.” What’s you’re most embarrassing moment? Adam: “Ok, think primary school, showers after P.E and the fire alarm goes off. Please don’t ask me why but I grabbed my socks… yes just my socks, and ran outside in front of the whole school with one sock at the back and one sock hiding my manhood. I was nick named ‘Arsy Adam’ after that.” Steve: “Can’t think of one (while laughing).” John: “I was out eating at a family restaurant one night. I went to the toilet and had a s**t but there was no toilet roll so I grabbed the nearest thing which just happened to be a nice clean white hand towel. I folded it up after de-clunking my butt and quickly returned to my seat. After telling my brother-in-law he decided he didn’t believe me and went to check it out. To my horror he returned with the towel open for all to see my a*** smear on a not so white hand towel, to horrified customers! Let’s just say I wasn’t asked to go back.” Joe: (was laughing too much to comment on this question!).
What would you class as a lucky break within this industry? John: “Shagging Jim Morrison (please don’t tell the Mrs).” Adam: “Getting a record deal while my hairs still long.” Joe: “Some media mogul finding our CD under his beer glass, listening to it and loving it.” Steve: “Someone signing us.” Have you ever had a thong thrown at you? Joe: “Nope.” Adam: “Not yet.” John: “I had bloomers thrown at me, does that count?” Steve: “Thongs weren’t about in the 80’s.” Speaking of thongs, do you wear them? Joe: (Silence). Adam: (Silence). John: “Not tonight, that’s Wednesday’s.” Steve: “No I lent them to Adam.” What advice would you give young talented bands out there? Steve: “Give me my youth back.” Joe: “Keep songs short, memorable and catchy.” Adam: “Keep your originality and don’t actually be your heroes.” John: “Stick at it and never stop learning.” If you were to write a bucket list, what would be number one to do before you die? Steve: “Cleanse the world of baddies wearing my fart man costume, HA HA.” Joe: “Take out a big b****** loan and blow it.” Adam: “Ride the biggest wave I can find.” John: “Go stay with Hugh Hefner for a week, oh and put Jim Morrison back.” Their music is a unique fusion of their personalities and I would go see them without hesitation. If you want to make your own mind up about their talents then come along to the 16th October Charity event. All in all a fun bunch of lads that had me in stitches!

Music Reviews Richard Batchelor takes a look at some of your CD’s... Band: Belleville Title: The First Dance Format: EP (5 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Belleville are a 5 piece from Canterbury of whom I had heard news of before, so I was looking forward to hearing their sound. Great things have been said about lead singer Emily Yates’ voice, but I had to have patience as instrumental title track ‘The First Dance’ started off the EP, delightfully coming across as a mix of Coldplay and U2... a sound that continues across the EP. My favourite songs on the EP were ‘Made Of Glass’ and ‘Serenade’ as Emily Yates’ intelligent and heartfelt lyrics are delivered with a wonderfully warm voice of which I had heard so much about. I thought the electric violin was an excellent addition and the megaphone sound on ‘Waves’ points to more experimental production in the future. Overall this is uplifting and impressive stuff from the Canterbury Quintet. Link: www.myspace.com/bellevillemusic
Band: Shayne Walsh Title: Some Kind of Wonderful Format: Album (10 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Some Kind Of Wonderful is the debut from Maidstone born Shayne Walsh. I don’t think the word feel-good has ever been more apparent for an album! His Christian beliefs are projected across in several songs, with ‘Worshipping Man’ and ‘The Victory Song’ being the best examples. However, ‘Picture Of Beauty’ was my favourite song on the album; a brilliantly written pop gem with fantastic saxophone accompaniment. It’s also a great treat when a distorted guitar solo kicks in every now and again. Shayne shows off his skill as a great songwriter on ‘Memories’ and on the reggae-tinged ‘Dare To Be Different’. As the final chord rang out on closing track ‘All For You’, I was left to reflect on one of the happiest albums I’d ever heard and I can’t wait to hear more from Shayne. I really hope his work gets heard as music this great deserves to be. Link: www.myspace.com/shayneteewalsh
Band: Various Artists Title: ZigZagGig Format: Album (11 Tracks) This compilation CD contains 11 tracks from various acoustic singer/songwriters in Folkestone, who have played at ZigZagGig; a music, art and drama event held every summer in Folkestone. This serves as an excellent introduction to music from the Folkestone scene, and it’s great to hear several of the tracks done live at the studios they were recorded at. If your looking for eleven talented local songwriters, look no further!
Gig Guide Verdict:
Gig Guides favourites are: ‘Wolf’ by Diane Dunn / ‘Jumpin’ Jonah’ by Robert Leigh / ‘Slap Your Slacks’ by Tony King. Link: www.myspace.com/zigzaggig

Music Reviews Band: Ghost In Mirrors Title: Ryder’s Dismount Format: EP (3 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Ghost In Mirrors are a four piece progressive rock band led by French vocalist France Amann. The tagline of progressive rock might put some people off but they will be missing out on something special, at first listen on title track ‘Ryder’s Dismount’, Ghost In Mirrors sound like a cross between Tool and Rage Against The Machine. However elements of Portishead and Massive Attack are also evident in the brilliant ‘Across The Seas and Oceans’ and ‘Tribe’. ‘Dead Bird’ and ‘Again’ definitely put the rock in progressive rock with crunching distortion and great lead overdrive work from guitarist Phil Short. It’s always great to see a band trying something different and Ghost In Mirrors are that kind of band. Cracking stuff!. Link: www.myspace.com/ghostinmirrors
Band: Archie Wah Wahs Title: Pieces Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
A band so wonderfully named as Archie Wah Wahs are undoubtedly going to attract your attention and if the name doesn’t, then their music certainly will! The heavy influence of The Specials is the first thing that strikes you about the Archie Wah Wahs with first track ‘Not In This World’ having a lovely keyboard line over the top, that works an absolute treat. Front-man Richard Braund’s vocal sneer is perfect for the songs ‘Decoy’ and ‘Stale Bread & Lumpy Milk’ which don’t carry the ska touch found on the first track but something more mainstream indie before ‘Down Newquay’ finishes proceedings and its heavy distortion is one change you don’t see coming!. A good start from a promising band. Link: www.myspace.com/archiewahwahs
Band: The Flack Title: The Flack Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
The Flack have only been together a year but are already making a name for themselves after finishing in the top 5 of Live and Unsigned (where some 10,000 bands took part). From the moment the guitar rings on first track ‘Forget Me’, you can just tell they belong onstage playing to thousands. Chris Maclean’s fantastic solo on ‘Forget Me’ is one of many highlights on this EP. Chris’ vocals are the perfect tone as The Flack blend together a sound halfway between the Arctic Monkey’s and The Specials, the last two tracks ‘Still Intoxicated’ and ‘The Things Ya Do To Me!’ showcase this brilliantly, and will certainly get me dancing when I go to see them live. The four songs I’ve heard are four of the catchiest songs I’ll hear all year from one of the best unsigned bands I’ve ever heard, they won’t stay unsigned for long!. Band: A Thousand Ways To Fall Title: A Thousand Ways To Fall Format: EP (7 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
A Thousand Ways To Fall (ATWTF), who hail from London, are impressing radio stations across the county and its not hard to see why. Their EP begins with a seemingly peaceful instrumental before a distorted guitar kicks in and you really understand what ATWTF are all about. James Delin’s voice is the perfect accompaniment to the distortion, giving the growl exactly when needed, particularly noticeable in ‘Screaming With Your Eyes Open’ and ‘Black Control’. In places it reminded me of The Offspring, Placebo and early Manic Street Preachers but its not all distortion; the final track shows the band’s ability to craft a lovely little acoustic number with ‘Francesca’, and a possible new direction for the guys. Any person into rock should definitely consider making room on their shelf for an ATWTF CD. Link: www.myspace.com/athousandwaystofall
Band: The Mop Collective Title: Matilda Format: Album (8 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Led by front man Joe Inkpen, The Mop Collective’s debut takes you on a musical journey you won’t ever forget, beginning with the title track ‘Matilda’ which draws you in with its beautifully intricate opening. More of the same intricacy can be found on the tracks ‘Loose Ends and Library Books’, ‘The Garden’ and ‘Delusions of Grandeur’. Tori Hamel-Cooke’s haunting voice matched with Joe’s ambiguous lyrics help deliver these melodies perfectly and when The Mop Collective kick it up ten or so notches with the driving distortion found on ‘Dawn’ & ‘Crow’, Cooke provides the power to match. I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite of the 8 tracks, each more different to the next, anyone looking for a remedy for over produced pop or whatever passes for R&B these days will find The Mop Collective the perfect cure. This is an intelligent, intriguing, baffling, bizarre and overall wonderful album. Link: www.themopcollective.co.uk
Band: Beorn Title: Mubla Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Mubla is the debut EP from Beorn who hail from Canterbury, all four tracks are instrumental but when Beorn effortlessly blend melodies like this you won’t notice. First song ‘Seaweed’ was my personal favourite, I was particularly fond of the brass used here whilst tracks ‘5am’ and ‘Shell Suite’ take a more drum heavy approach with ‘Shell Suite’ making lovely use of tabla drums. Track ‘Class A’ is neatly sandwiched in between the drum heavy numbers and manages to combine a gritty distorted vibe with another inclusion of brass this time sounding quite Arabian much to my surprise and delight!. Imagine your in a musical kitchen, take a pinch of Zero 7, a dash of Air and season with Orbital and you’ll get something along the lines of Beorn, you’ll also get pure chill out bliss, can’t wait to hear more from Beorn. Not To Be Missed: Holloways in the Loft
F
ollowing on from an outstanding night playing host to Them is Me, Maidstone’s premier music venue; ‘The Loft’ is set to welcome The Holloways on 2nd November. Almost a year has passed since we last saw them play the Leas Cliff Hall (on 28th November), but things have changed a lot in that time! In December 2008, following months of already hard times battling legal issues with their former US label, a fire in the band’s home caused massive damage and destroyed £30,000 worth of equipment. This was the final straw for members Dave and Rob, who then left the band. In April of this year, Alfie & Bryn recruited two fellow members and are now back in business. Tickets cost £7 and are available from the official website (below). www.the-holloways.co.uk
