elcome to the September/October edition of The Gig Guide.

As we exit the summer months and autumn rolls in, there will be those who might think we have little to look forward to. However, there is most definitively enough to keep even the most discerning music critic happy, with plenty of Kent bands playing live in pubs and clubs where even the biggest of acts once started, there hasn’t been a better time to get out there and discover the unsigned talent Kent has to offer. That’s not the end of the festivals season just yet though, with the Ashford Beer Festival just around the corner, and Tenterden Folk Festival in October there’s plenty of outdoor music on offer.

15th September sees Clacket Lane officially release their new single; ‘Moon Man’. The gig guide have had a chance to listen to the track in it’s finished format and can confirm that the band is on top form with a sound that is fresher than before and full of energy. From the phasing electro intro you are immediately drawn in, and when you reach the first verse, Ben Freebury’s vocals (that are somewhat reminiscent of Kasabian’s Tom Meighan) really shine through. Having heard this new material, we now look forward anxiously to the imminent release of the band’s new album. resh from their Quex Park gig, we caught up with Scouting For Girls to see what they thought of new bands on the scene and what they like to eat whilst they’re down the pub. Firstly though, we had to know what they thought of the Sound Island Festival. “Awesome” was the enthusiastic reply from Greg. “It’s our first time playing the area and it was amazing, the crowd were buzzing, the sun was shining and we had a really good laugh playing in front of the 6’000 odd people that turned up.” So it seems that Kent is once again proving why so much attention has been put our way when bands are looking for venues. The band have been playing their unique upbeat style for the past ten years, but it has only been since 2005 that they adopted the name Scouting for girls and we were keen to find out why……

How did you come up with your band name? “We were in the scouts together and everyone got a handbook that was ‘Scouting For Boys’ and so we just changed that around really.” Did you have any other names before you settled on that? “Well we’ve been playing since 1998 so in that time we’ve had some strange names, in one we were called powercut because we couldn’t afford any electric guitars so we just played acoustic.” You’ve been on a long tour, any plan’s of new material? “Well we have a tour coming up in November which is going to feature some new music but I’m not sure about a full album.”

Roses, ‘Pet Sounds’ by The Beach Boys and ‘Are You Experienced?’ by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.” What about new music, any upcoming acts that you rate? “Go:Audio, without a doubt. They toured with us and not only are they really good blokes but they rock too, go check ‘em out.” Your big fans of Michaela Strachan but who would you choose out of Cheryl Baker and Claire Grogan? “Who’s Claire Grogan? Seriously? I’ve gotta go for Cheryl Baker ‘coz I don’t know who Claire is!” If you could be any fictional film character who would it be? “James Bond, easily!”

Any changes in style? “I can’t really reveal that! We are keeping our cards close to our chest as it were.”

Really, I would have chose Batman? “Yeah but Bond gets more ladies, has cooler gadgets and doesn’t wear tights!”

What’s been the best gig for you? “I know it’s cheesy but every gig has a highlight that we’ll remember and it’s far too hard to pick just one.”

If you were in a tag team wrestling match, who would you want to be your partner? “Pete from the band, he has some excellent moves and he’s actually really strong.”

The best and worst thing about what you do? “The worst is being away from family and friends for so long, especially as they were the ones that supported us from the beginning and made us a success, but to be away from home brings the best part of the job which is just playing live. It’s such a buzz to have thousands of people screaming and especially when we look out and we have teens, people in their twenties, thirties right up to 60 year olds singing along with our tracks.” Why do you think you have been so successful and appeal to such a range of listeners? “It’s our record companies biggest headache, they don’t know where to market us, we get interview requests from Mixmag, then the next minute we’re talking to someone from the Guardian. I think it’s that we have such an accessible music, it’s very upbeat and very happy which I think all listeners enjoy.” When you say it’s happy music, there’s a lot of humour involved, who’s the funniest in the band? “Oh easily Pete, the drummer. We get the funny lyrics and we understand that people laugh at our songs sometimes but Pete is naturally funny. The humour in our lyrics is just a coincidence.” If you could have written any song in history what would it have been? “It’s tough but I reckon ‘I am the resurrection’ by The

Stone Roses.” Would they be on your top album list then? “Yeah, top 3 would be ‘The Stone Roses’ by The Stone

What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “A cat, I’m a big wuss!” What is your favourite crisp flavour? “I quite like Sweet Chilli Sensations at the moment.” Favourite bar snack? “Scampi Fries, obviously, the best hangover cure in the world too.” You’re a QPR fan, what’s your expectations for the season? “I’m not sure about next season but as we are now the richest club in the world I reckon by 2011 we’ll be in Europe and beating Chelsea week in week out.” Do you have a message to the world? “Please buy our album!!!!”

So, we’ve learnt that eating Scampi Fries cures a hangover (we’ll be sure to try this one out!) and that the guys will be ok if they ever had to defend themselves from a cat attack! The self titled album is available now in shops or online from the bands website www.scoutingforgirls.co.uk

Feature: Swing Special This edition, The Gig Guide is looking at the Swing scene (the music that is!), from it’s roots to how it fits in alongside today’s greats. History of Swing Back in the 1920’s & 30’s, the dance form of Jazz was very popular and focussed on sweet melodies accompanied by romantic string orchestra arrangements. During the early 30’s, artists started appearing who wanted to change the style and break-out with more livelier styles. They experimented with smaller orchestra’s, cutting out the slower string sections and began to Glenn Miller improvise more with the music, creating a distinctively different sound that was ‘edgier’ with strong horn and wind sections dominating through the music. This new style of arrangement was given a Bing Crosby name and thus, ‘Swing Rhythm’ was born. It is this rhythm with it’s shift from a two-beat, towards a four-beat feel that developed into what was defined as ‘Swing music’, popular between the late 30’s and 40’s. Swing music itself died away by the end of the 1940’s, but gave way to artists who incorporated it’s style into others, creating their own blend but keeping the feel of Swing alive. Crooners such as Bing Crosby & Frank Sinatra grew from the basics of swing and Sinatra kept the swing-band feel through-out his career, being possibly the first name people will think of today if asked about the origins of the music. Other notable artists who incorporated the feel into the popular Rock ‘n’ Roll Style of music include Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. Nat King Cole

The late 1990’s saw a comeback for the style with a swing revival, which is still growing today and the early 2000’s saw Michael Bublé reignite the public’s admiration of the smartly dressed crooner, with his own uniquely modern style. Feature: Swing Special Kai McKenzie t just 22, Kai has already developed a respected reputation for himself within the music industry as a top session vocalist. His range is vast, with a powerful vocal delivery and a rich, mature tone. Since his youth, Kai has always enjoyed singing many different styles of music, although swing still heads the top of his personal favourites list.

When Michael Bublé released his first self-titled album in 2003, Kai became an immediate fan and it was soon after when he made the decision to start a tribute show to the artist. Still going strong today, Kai’s performance consists of two 45 minute shows with a short break to separate them.

The gig guide quizzed the star about music, life and his favourite things... What is your full name, how old are you and where did you grow up? “I’m Kai McKenzie, I’m 22 and I grew up in Orpington, Kent.” How long have you been singing and did you have lessons or are you self taught? “I’ve been singing for a good twelve years or so and yes I’m self-taught.“ What is your favourite and least favourite venue in Kent? “I really couldn’t say. Each venue I perform for has a different atmosphere. At some places, people get up and dance on the tables and we have an absolute party. Some places just are more relaxed and I find that the audience tend to really listen to the performance, which is nice because you feel that each song is appreciated. As long as people enjoy the show, I leave a happy man.“ So what is the biggest crowd you’ve ever played to (anywhere)? “I performed in a football stadium once a few years ago. I can’t remember how many people the stadium held exactly but it was an amazing experience to hear applause like that. If we are including TV performances, I sang on Michael Barrymore’s TV show when I was younger and I think the show had around four to five million viewers. It was extremely cool and so fun to do.”

Any venues in Kent that you’d like to play, but haven’t yet? “Yes actually, but I’m working on it! To be perfectly honest, I’d just love to play somewhere that has a big audience, and a live swing band I could borrow for a song or two…. or maybe even a whole set, who knows! For me to be able to perform with a big swing band like Michael bublé’s would be an absolute dream come true for me.“ On the subject of Kent, do you have a favourite act/band? “Yes, I used to know a guy called Danny Litchfield who I think is amazing. I haven’t seen him recently, but I know he’s still out there playing in Kent. I’m going to try and find out where he’s playing over the next few weeks and pop down to see him when I get a chance.” What are you listening to at the moment? “Well, in my CD Changer I’ve got a lot of Michael Bublé songs (obviously), One Republic’s album, and I’m still enjoying a little bit of Amy Winehouse. Also (rather randomly I might add) I love my Tenacious D albums – they’re hilarious! Not many albums make me chuckle to myself whilst driving but once you get passed laughing at the lyrics, you actually notice how talented those guys really are!”

Have you got a favourite album then? Diana Krall or Clare Teal? “Oh I’m afraid there’s more than one. Maroon “Diana Krall for me. I have had fair success writing and producing for acts such as S Club 8, D-Side, Part-Six, and most recently I have produced two songs for a Disney film that will be in Cinema’s across the globe in March 2009. So another future ambition for me, is to write a smash hit song that is covered by many artists for years to come and makes enough money for me to help out my family and friends financially. My final ambition is tour the world! I’ve got big dreams, I’ve just got to work hard and make them reality.” Any regrets? “Nothing that’s important, but I do wish I’d started this tribute show sooner. Feature: Swing Special Hullabaloo

f you follow the live music scene in Kent, you would almost certainly have come across Hullabaloo at some point. With a massive following in Holland, Germany and Belgium already, they have established themselves as live music professionals. Like it or not, these guys have a golden key that most bands would love to own, appealing to a wide range of audiences they have a stage presence that washes over the crowd and when I asked the lead singer Jarrod about this, his explanation was very simple... "We love what we do, and I think that this must come inspiration from the Everly across to people" Brothers. Not only do they regularly play around England and Europe, at festivals such as the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland, the band has also played in South Africa and Dubai. They were also invited to play at the wedding of TV chef, Jamie Oliver. Closer to home, Hullabaloo are regulars at the Pizza Express Jazz Club Maidstone and the 100 Club London, both popular venues for jazz legends. Above all, the band love playing music and entertaining people. Their versatile repertoire of classic hits spanning the 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to the present day, played with enthusiasm and professionalism is sure to impress any audience. they knew that to be a success, the venue had to offer something different. The idea was to present a range of entertainment on different nights of the week, maintaining Zebra Bar’s reputation for a great weekend hang out, with DJs, great atmosphere and affordable drinks. A year later things have been steadily falling into place. During 2008 thanks to the hard work of the venue’s promoters and management the town centre bar has become one of the region’s leading live music venues, offering a great deal more besides. Whether you are a lover of great live music, if you fancy Latin American Dance classes, or even an evening with the Comedy Club, then Zebra Bar deserves further investigation.

Venue Profile:

Back in August 2007, Maidstone based music magazine ‘Maverick’ chose the venue to host a weekly showcase of Americana, Roots, Folk and Country artists. Like the Soul Café before it, Maverick @ Zebra has become an established venue on the UK circuit for many of the finest players and singers not just from Nashville itself, but all over the USA, Canada and Europe. This is quite remarkable as there are just a handful of such venues in the country. In its first year at Zebra, Maverick has brought notables such as guitar hero Albert Lee, Dire Straits co-founder David Knopfler, and Bluegrass phenomenon Uncle Earl, to Maidstone’s town centre. The list goes on and is added to on a weekly basis by songwriters whose tunes have been hits for such artists as Trisha Yearwood and The Backstreet Boys, as well as musicians who have graced the recordings of The Eagles, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Bjork, Robbie Williams and pretty much everyone else in-between. There is so much to say about Maverick @ Zebra, yet surprisingly much of its audience travels from far and wide. It seems the people of Maidstone have yet to be let in on the secret to some extent. Last year during her gig, respected British songwriter Charlie Dore asked the audience to raise their hands if they came from Maidstone. Less than 10 hands went up in a busy room. Promoter and sound engineer Dan Turner explains why Maverick gigs pull in crowds from far and wide. “The very nature of what we do is just off the mainstream radar. Many artists have a kind of cult following in the UK, fans will travel from all over the place to see people play. We had a guy fly from Berlin to see Albert Lee!”. Dan was instrumental in bringing the Maverick events to Zebra, but before he became involved with promotion David Knopfler Band, Live at Maverick and sound he went to a few Maverick gigs

at other venues in Maidstone and was so amazed by the quality of the music that he decided to dedicate a lot of his spare time to putting Maverick @ Zebra on the map. “As a music fan and sound engineer I could hardly ask to be involved with anything more exciting, I get to meet and work with world class musicians, the odd music legend, as well as those on the way up in the industry. One of many high points for me has been bringing David Knopfler and his band to Maidstone. David rarely plays live in the UK and it’s such a shame. Lots of people new to his music went away smiling that night, and that’s why I do it! It’s a great feeling making things happen that otherwise might not. We promote these gigs because we genuinely love the music, these amazing artists deserve a far wider audience than many of them seem to achieve. I just wish more local people would switch off the telly and experience live music at its best. Not every town has something this special”.

Hot on the heels of the Maverick gigs came Sounds @ Zebra. Every Wednesday night local promoter Sue Bell pulls together the best in local live music, and showcases bands from across the UK and beyond. The sounds of Indie, Punk, Electro, Rock, Ska and much more are regularly to be heard at this weekly Wednesday night event. Sue and Sounds @ Zebra played a big part in bringing BBC Radio One to the venue in May this year.

“Zebra was a great venue for Radio 1 in May 2008, when we brought One Big Weekend to Maidstone. It became a key venue in holding the One Big Weekend: FRINGE FESTIVAL. Throughout the week we saw many of Kent’s finest bands gracing the stage at the Zebra Bar - a fantastic live music venue! I chose it because of the diversity in its live music programming from local indie bands and acoustic acts to the Maverick nights, which give a stage to artists from all corners of the globe. Another exciting development has been a new monthly ‘BBC Kent Introducing’ gig hosted by presenters James Bursey and Tom Kirkby. BBC Introducing is doing great things in every BBC region, by seeking out the best unsigned talent in the area, giving it airplay and presenting it on a live tour. Thanks to BBC Introducing many unsigned acts are getting national airplay on Radio 1 by the likes of Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens. Look out for BBC Kent Introducing at the Zebra Bar on the first Thursday of each month.

or something that was so highly billed as a major event for the south east and one that would put Kent firmly in the spotlight for live music, it seemed that the festival organisers struggled to cope under the pressure of ‘teething problems’ encountered in the first year of Zoo thousand. From the very start, ticket holders were getting frustrated as heavy queues formed due to the lack of organisation around the entrance of the site. Unfortunately that had paled into insignificance by the end of the weekend, and not in a positive way! Further problems plagued the event with the actual venue site and music not opening until gone 5 o’clock in the evening; a delay of over three hours. This, together with breakdowns in communication over pay caused acts to cancel or simply not show and force many scheduling changes which, whilst disruptive enough in themselves, were made far worse by a lack of announcements being made on site, leaving attendees thumbing through their (purchased) guides with disdain. Saturday brought about a new day, the chance to get things back on track and prove

to everyone how the festival could run, but instead brought nothing but more headaches with the closure of the Tap ‘N’ Tin tent due to health and safety officials deeming the structure unsafe. Some of the acts due to play there were moved in between scheduled acts on the other stages, but none of this was announced leaving everyone to wander aimlessly trying to figure out who was playing and when. I appreciate organising an event of this scale amidst unexpected problems must be a very hard task, but I felt that the public who made the effort to support the festival were the ones let down by being kept in the dark throughout. Ricardo Monty, one of the directors of the festival has said; “I'm happy with the way it went. I think ticket holders were happy...”. I admire his positive attitude, and I sincerely hope that Zoo9 will be a vast improvement on the previous year, however from hearing the opinions first hand on site over the weekend, I am more than a little apprehensive about the future of this event.

Review: Lounge on the farm

ust one week on from the Zoo Thousand festival, Kent was treated to another weekend of live music on a grand scale. Unlike Zoo8 though, Lounge on the Farm (lotf) 2008 was a complete success and ran with no obvious problems. As soon as we arrived on the compact farm site, the stewards greeted us with happy smiles and were pleased to offer their assistance if needed, perhaps aided by the warm sun that was shining down. On site, the sense of scale with which the festival operates becomes apparent, with the whole event taking not more than 15 minutes to walk around! This in no way put a downer on the weekend but rather added to the general ethos in the air; a feeling of enthusiasm to catch the plethora of artists performing live in Kent. Besides, it certainly made cutting between your favourite artists playing on different stages a lot easier! The event was well managed too, with plenty of facilities available including hammocks to relax in, swingball posts to play with and bales of hay to rest weary legs, all of which offered free of charge. It was also positive to see recycling bins in place around the field, an idea pioneered by Glastonbury festival in previous years and one that has worked very well to reduce the impact caused by such events.

Friday saw Canterbury based band Amanes open the ‘Further’ stage with their blend of experimental folk pleasing the crowd eager for the music. The same stage Up Up CC Down Down CC played host to Zoo for You (myspace.com/ zooforyou) later in the day; another Canterbury band also featuring a saxophonist, who managed to fit all six members onto the stage! They attracted a sizeable crowd and received significant praise as they performed their songs well. Polka Party (myspace.com/officialpolkaparty) from Medway, were honoured with the chance to play the main ‘Cow Shed’ stage, and succeeded in drawing a large crowd of supporters with their accessible guitar pop going down well. Over on the ‘Sheep Dip’ stage, The Lovedays (www.thelovedays.net) from Medway & Maidstone took control of the stage and looked confident as they played through their hits with confidence. On Sunday, What Would Jesus Drive (www.whatwouldjesusdrive.co.uk) (who also hail from Kent), played with more than enough energy to make up for the diminutive size of their band of just two members. They were followed closely by Tunbridge Wells’ Intraverse (myspace.com/intraverse), a band who seemed at home playing to a large crowd, dominating the stage with their incredible energy and delivered a great set. UpC DownC (www.upcdownc.com) brought a very different sound to the evening with their progressive rock going down well with the crowd. Review: Glastonbury Festival

These guys are no strangers to playing festivals. They have played Endorse-It In Dorset, Bearded Theory, Ragged Hedge and in August 2007 they played to a 3000+ crowd at Beautiful Days Festival but, this was Glasto! and the Hobos were a little nervous to say the least. Arriving in the backstage area, they could see they had a good sized crowd and were ready to give their all. Then the generator broke down and they had another 20 minutes of nail-biting waiting until the backstage crew fixed it and they mounted the stage to a capacity crowd (not bad for 1pm at a Festival!). Opening up with a skiffle version of Led Zep’s Rock ‘n’ Roll the Hobos did what they do best, playing Skunk (skiffle/punk) versions of classic rock and roll, punk, pop and traditional songs interspersed with several of their own songs (available on their new CD Skunk & Disorderly!) with the usual comedy banter between songs (who’s trousers am I wearing?). During their 40 minute set, the Hobos drew more people towards ‘The Avalon’ Stage, many of whom couldn’t get into the tent and had to be satisfied with straining their necks to see. Things slowed down a little when they played their own song Tyburn Jig, a folk song about shooting a tax man which kept the audience engaged ready for a rowdy version of Irish Rover that followed it. For an encore, they handed out spoons, tin trays, pots and pans to the audience and finished their set with Lonnie Donegan’s Mama Don’t ‘Low which they encouraged the audience to bang on their ‘instruments’ while Wino Tyrone performed a rap ‘dissing’ the controversial Glastonbury choice of headliner Jay Z, sang the Um Bongo advert and Miser Bill led the audience to sing Give Peace a Chance. 40 minutes of singing, silliness, skunk rock and outrageous fun, a perfect way to start a festival.

27th June 2008, began like any other day.

The ground had dried from the previous night's heavy downpour. Sam Skillz awoke and lit the barbeque. The sweet aromas from the finest sausages awoke the Painted Man, Tejipt, Notorious BID, the Weapon and Driftwood. Everyone did their usual morning rituals, scoffed down their hot dogs and made their way to the East Dance Stage to get a sneak at what was due to come that afternoon. They passed the security guards flashing their back stage passes with a massive grin and made their way up the ramp and walked onto the stage; the biggest they had ever stepped foot on. They took the view in and looked out at where the crowd would be in just under 2 hours. This was it, no turning back, no rehearsals, no second chances. One shot, one opportunity to blow the crowd away and walk off stage knowing they gave it their all. They informed the technicians what would be needed for each individual performer for that 45 minute set. 13:00, 27 June 2008. The drum kit was set up, the electric and bass guitar tuned. The violin glistened under the back stage lights. The silver surfer of scratch had loosened his fingers and was ready to glide on the vinyls. As the previous act finished their set, the Crowd went crazy and waited with bated breath for the next act. This was it, this was their time. Bugsta Malone stepped out onto the stage, grabbed the wireless mic and introduced Fundamental Skillz. Before long, the intro had been completed and the crowd was bumping their head to the melodic catchy chorus of ‘Press Play’. They pushed the boundaries and had the crowd in the palm of their hands. In no time, Naomi Hill was on the violin adding that extra flavour to the dark and moody sound of ‘Behind the Shades’. The crowd was thrown back, one moment they had been dancing to ‘Press Play’ and now the lyrics of the political ‘Behind the Shades’ was sending shivers through their spine. By the time the final repetition of, "Pull, Pull, Pull" had been sang by the lead vocalists, Fundamental Skillz were in their element. They had taken control and had the crowd guessing what would come next. The crowd continued to have a roller coast ride from the hard and heavy ‘End of the Line’, to the eclectic ‘Gossip’ and through to the melodic, ‘In the Blood’. The majority of the crowd were singing, "Music take me away," over and over again long after the song had played out. By the time the final song ‘Another MC’ came round, it felt like it had all passed too quickly. The hard rain, the sausages in the morning, the inspection of the stage and the relationship with the crowd. The only regret for the band was that it was all over far too quickly. They felt so at home on the East Dance Stage that the 45 minute set seemed like a 5 minute set. Fundamental Skillz performed like they were born for that stage, they performed like they belong in the big league. Next stop at Glastonbury would be the Pyramid Stage and why not? Un-Signed & Un-Noticed? Abby Kedwell Reports: I was casually doing research on ideas for my next article when I stumbled across a few websites that targeted un-signed bands. All of them asked for demos and most of them said “we’ll get back to you as soon as we can”. Knowing how stressful and soul destroying it can be waiting for any news on you’re future dreams, I began to feel sorry for those hopeful, talented people. Sending in demo after demo, waiting to hear something, anything! It made me wonder whether there was somewhere un-signed bands could physically go to hand in their demos in the Kent area. Also somewhere they could practise, get advice and support with their music and obtain the exposure they need to get started on the lengthy path to success.

What they needed and like so many other bands out there need is an independent live music venue that nurtures up and coming bands. Designed and built by musicians for musicians. A venue where all Kent based bands could come together and support each other. There would be advice on tap by professionals, rehearsal rooms, use of instruments, recording studio facilities and much more; a musicians dream! The further I researched this fantastic music heaven it looked as though these venues did exist but further a field than Kent and even then they are few and far between. For a small town that has plenty of talented people there should be somewhere they can vent their gifts within music. Even a few of these venues spread throughout the towns of Kent? For starters think of the prospects of having a central venue in you’re town. Just imagine every month talent scouts coming from all over Kent attending a monthly showing of all new bands. If one of those bands were to be selected to progress further and they made it big they wouldn’t forget in a hurry where that all happened.

After a good two hours of searching I found even more websites that were offering their services on-line. Don’t get me wrong some of which were designed and run by people that were more than passionate about music but I wanted more! I found venue after venue that specialised in showing live acts but again there was nothing pulling them from the rest, they didn’t offer advice, support, rehearsing rooms and somewhere for talented musicians to hang out with like minded people.

So thumbs up to the idea of a venue that gives it all back to the people that will someday make something of themselves within the unpredictable world of music. To all those bands that have slogged their guts out trying to get noticed but just haven’t met the right I wondered whether a place like this actually people and to all those that have made it on existed in Kent so I picked up the phone and their own, good on ya. Music Roundup The Gig Guide takes a look at some CD’s from Kent bands... Band: Electric River Title: Radio No Go! Format: Album (14 tracks) As you listen through this album, it becomes clear that Electric River have a lot of energy that is collectively channelled through their catchy songs with sing-a-long choruses and foot-tapping beats. That’s not to say their songs are poorly constructed though. The tracks have been well thought out and the result is a collection of music that both pleases the ear and gets the body moving, none more so than ‘A Raga for the Drunks’ with it’s fast paced feeling. I’m sure that a crowd at one of their live shows is a sight to behold as the warm feeling that the music generates, washes over them and inspires them to move to the beat.

A great album for all, even for those who thought they hated punk!

Band: The Lovedays Title: The Lovedays Format: Album (14 tracks)

Gig Guide Verdict:

From the first track you get the impression this album is something special. Ben Jones’ expertly written lyrics blend seamlessly with the musical talent of the band. ‘Me, Myself and I’ draws you in with it’s driving riffs, interspersed with clever pauses. A similar effect used to great success on ‘Devil’s Advocate’ which is sure to be a natural crowd pleaser. Two tracks indicate the diversity of their song writing talents. The first; ‘Sit Me Down Woman Blues’, is as the title suggests, a classic rock ‘n’ roll song based on the blues. The second; ‘Landlocked’, shows a different side to the band and proves they can produce songs with strong feeling and heartfelt lyrics. The overall result is an album that is well rounded and packed full of interesting compositions.

Band: Intraverse Title: An Eclectic Selection of Demos Format: Album (9 tracks) Although only nine tracks grace this album, they are all carefully selected works from Intraverse’s back catalogue. The opening; ‘Our Rock ‘n’ Roll is Dead’ opens with it’s simple structure, before ‘The Message’ ups the pace and sets the tone of things to come. It’s easy to get lost within the music as it takes you on a grand journey, beautifully overlaid with Max Pepe’s vocals. The ‘funk’ feeling is evident throughout all the songs and the influence of bands such as Incubus can be detected from the cleverly composed guitar work, as heard on tracks ‘Head Down’, ‘Frustrated’ and ‘Leave My Bitch Alone!’

An Eclectic Selection of Demos is a timeless collection of music and a great listen from start to finish.

Ashford Beer Festival Real Ales, Real Music, Real Rugby - 5th to 7th September 2008 The Ashford Beer Festival is an annual 3 day event. The festival is based around 3 key components of fun: Real Ale, Music and Rugby and is held at the Ashford Rugby Club. The Festival is open to all and there are 40 Real ales are available for those adventurous enough to try and taste them all! Music has been a core component of the festival since 2003 and this year sees the return of Belgian band Eagle Four and popular local band Electric River. Tenterden Folk Festival 3rd - 5th October 2008 A full weekend festival of folk song, music and dance.
