eing no strangers to the process of making a record, Deal-based Euston are currently putting the finishing touches to their 4th CD, due be released before the end of the year.
As yet untitled, the band are hoping to have it completed in time for their Hole in the Roof gig on 22nd November, which would act as an effective launch party for the album. Already available to download via their fan page on Facebook is the new single “Save”, inspired by the hit TV series “Heroes”. “The song is a beautiful example of what an unsigned band can do." - lead vocalist Russel English, about the song “Save”.
Two b-sides; "The Silence" and "In My Headlights" also accompany the single and can be downloaded for free via the facebook page. Newcomers to the band might want to check out their previous releases; "Where To, From Here", "Along For The Ride", & "The

News Mirkwood: 35 years in the (re-)making By Jack Castle & Chris Ashman
I
History n 1967 Mick Morris invited Jack Castle to join his band Take Five, essentially a covers band featuring excellent vocal harmonies. They were very successful, but soon began to look for something more creative and challenging so the pair decided to create something new, influenced by bands like, 'Yes', Deep Purple,' and 'Queen'. The result was ‘Mirkwood’ Both Mick and Jack were widely recognised as two of the best guitarists in the area and the initial line-up consisted of Derek Bowley (lead vocals), Jack Castle and Mick Morris (both guitar and vocals), Steve Smith (drums) and Andy Broadbent (bass). In early 1972 D. Evans was brought in to replace Andy Broadbent (who had moved away from the Dover area). Up until their last gig in June 1975 the band played throughout the South East of England including support work to some well-known bands, including Supertramp. Mirkwood got together just once more, in 1978 for a reunion performance at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. The Album
The only 'proper' recording that Mirkwood made was an album on the Flams Ltd Label (catalogue No PR1067), a

local record label owned by John Scott Cree. Recording commenced on 17 January 1973 at Jack's house in Whitfield, Dover on a Revox reelto-reel tape recorder! A mere 99 copies of the album were pressed, the majority ending up with family, friends and local supporters. The material utilised on the album was culled from the band's first batch of songs: sadly their later material, including many of their finest songs, was not recorded. All that remains of the many compositions written and performed between 1973 and 1975 are some lyric and music sheets and a few very poor quality live cassette tapes. In 1993 the album was re-pressed by 10th Planet in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies utilising the same artwork and by 2003, the original Flams vinyl copies were changing hands at between £600 and £700 per copy and the 10th Planet limited copies now depleted. Today, the original vinyl has been credited as being number 56 in the ‘200 rarest albums of all time’, acording to ‘Record Collector’ Magazine (Nov 2008)! The New Album At the end of 2003 specialist German label Amber Soundroom approached the Kent band historian and media consultant Chris Ashman, to try and find the members of Mirkwood, in order to secure a licence to re-release the album. The politics of "to release or not to release" went on for some time. There are those who believe a rare album should stay rare for its value. There are others who believe that reproductions allow all to share in the beauty of a masterpiece. Behind the scenes, Chris hunted high and low for a mint un-played copy of the Mirkwood Album. (The Master Tape had been lost along with the original artwork in 1973, when the pressing company went
into liquidation). To the rescue came Jackie Bowles of The Louis Armstrong Public House in Dover (the favourite haunt of the members of Mirkwood and the musicians of Dover for nigh on 40 years). Her spare copy had sat untouched in her record cabinet since 1973. The realisation that the original recording quality could now be recaptured digitally in Hamburg using the latest technology was too much to miss, so common sense and peace once more reigned and contracts were signed. For the first time in over 30 years the writers' copyrights were properly registered. The compositions can now be licensed and recorded by other recording artistes. At last there were affordable Mirkwood albums available for all. Even those collectors sitting on one of the most rare records in the world could buy a playable copy. Kent record company Red Admiral Records LLP are contracted to release the recording on Compact Disc to ensure the album's future availability and you can also download in all of the popular formats. - Adapted & editted by Stuart Keeler

Heroes for the day
O
BY STUART KEELER
n September 21st, Kent county showground at Detling played host to “A Day for Heroes” to raise needed funds for the Help for Heroes Charity. Headlining for the day were McFly, and The Gig Guide caught up with drummer Harry Judd before the event... What influenced you to get into in to the music industry? “I’ve always been a fan of music and was in bands at school. I didn’t really try and get into it, I just kind of fell into it which is quite fortunate really.” Any Music Qualifications? Or Self Taught? “Yeah, I started teaching myself for like half a year, then took lessons at school” What bands have you played with in the past? Any favourites? “We recently did a gig with The Hoosiers, at a show called Carlisle Live. They are really good guys and a cool band. Scouting for Girls, who we played with at the Olympic handover were really nice guys too. They are just good people.” What music are you listening to at the moment? “Well we’ve been recording the album all year, then played load of shows and done a lot of promotion so to be honest, I’m a bit sick of music really. I actually like to listen to talk shows and audio books on the radio” Who would you most like to work with? “I’ve just heard that Kings of Leon song on the radio (Sex on Fire) and I’m really loving that. They’re a cool band who we’d love to work alongside. It’s probably better to say who would want to work with us really, there are loads we’d want to work with”
p8 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan
Career highlight? “We recently recorded a song with Roger Daltrey, which was amazing. It was quite nerve-wracking to put down the bass and drum sections, knowing that he’s used to Keith Moon!” Favourite thing/least favourite thing about your job? “Touring and recording is a definite favourite, and my least favourite; promotion.” - Hey, we’re not that bad! “Yeah, least favourite would be talking to promo people on the phone! haha, seriously there isn’t really a bad side but I would say it’s not like other areas of work where people can take time off when they like. I’ve missed quite a few parties as this really is a full time job, but this goes hand in hand with the great benefits so I’m not complaining!” Do you think your newest songs have opened up a wider fan base? “We feel in ourselves that they might, but we’re really fortunate to have a great set of fans already, so we are not worried really if they do or not.”
Tom & Dougie aren’t into football at all. Danny did great though, we were all really impressed with his skills. That’s the best I’ve seen him play so far!” Did you enjoy the experience of making the video for “Lies”? “Oh deffinately, it’s probably the best video we’ve made even though it took the longest to shoot. It lasted about two and a half days but it was an amazing experience ‘cos it felt like we were on a movie set, it felt really big.” Why did you decide to change your band logo, using a new font? Did you have input into the design? “We did actually. Part of starting up our own record label was that we wanted more creative control of our work and so we changed the logo to what we wanted. We had loads of meetings with the artwork guys, and although we weren’t sure on the new logo at first, now we love it and it goes well with the album artwork.” Other than Brazil, are you going to be gigging in other countries? “Well we’d love to. The Brazil thing happened as we had a huge demand from fans there and a promoter decided to get in contact and put on the shows for us. As long as there is demand for the music, we’ll happily play anywhere. We’d like to go over Europe, so come on McFly army; keep pushing for us to play!”
Earlier this year, you took a brave move of not only leaving your record label, but also giving away your album for free with The Mail on Sunday. Were you worried that the move could backfire on you? “At the beginning of the year we were looking at it positively and weren’t worried. We were confident it was a good thing to do and it did generate a lot of interest. If I was promoting the album all over again I would keep saying it’s not what people are going to expect. I’m 22, and I think it’s full of quality songs. People think of McFly as ‘5 colours in Her Hair’ & ‘Obviously’ which, don’t get we wrong, are all great pop songs and we still enjoy playing them, but the new album has moved on a bit.” What inspired you to get involved with Days for Heroes? “It’s an amazing opportunity, and an amazing thing to do. We always like to do shows that have a strong meaning to them, and it feels like we’re helping out, even if we aren’t doing much!” Danny appeared (and did very well) on Soccer Aid, did anyone else in the band want to take part? “I did yeah, but I think they only wanted one of us and
You’ve been quoted as saying that you have “the perfect amount of fame”. Do you think you’ll ever crave worldwide recognition? “I’d definitely not mind upping the level of success, but not the level of fame. There’s no appeal for me in being too famous.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? (You are allowed to team up as a band) “Without a weapon? Jeez that’s hard. I’m gonna say a bear, but I reckon the bear would still have it as Dougie, now I love Dougie, but he’d not be much use in the fight so it’d just really be the three of us getting mauled by a bear, whilst Dougie hides out in the bushes. He’d have to run away and carry on McFly by himself!” You can catch McFly around the country on their 2008 arena tour during November. The deluxe version of Radio:Active (featuring 2 hour bonus DVD, 32 page booklet and 4 new songs) is out now.
Thanks to Emily Hall (Kent’s No.1 McFly fan!) for providing extra interview questions.

orming in 2001, Liverpool band The Zutons have grown to establish themselves as a worldwide success. With three studio albums under
their belt and their debut being nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize, they have a lot to be proud of. The band were originally a four-piece, with drummer
Sean Payne’s girlfriend; Abi Harding making an occasional guest appearance with her saxophone. The crowd as well as the band, enjoyed the extra depth that the saxophone was bringing to the music and so Abi was brought in as a permanent member of the band. They have been actively touring this year with many festival appearances, including a visit to Maidstone for One Big Weekend hosted by Radio 1 in May. They excel live, and will be kicking off their 2 month UK winter tour at The Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone on the 10th November. Ahead of their gig, we asked them a few questions...

The Zutons
Russell Pritchard chats with us...
As a band, you have a sound that is quite unique, making it difficult for some people to categorise you. Where do your influences come from and what is it that has shaped your tone into what it is today? We all like to listen to all sorts of music, nothing is out of bounds! I think the different characters in our band have shaped our sound, we play together and the outcome is Zuton music. Your music also manages to appeal to a diverse cross section of listeners, something that many bands find hard to achieve. What would you cite as the key to your success in entertaining so many people? Good songwriting at the core of the band, a band that believes in music being played well live, and not being too pretentious. Liverpool has recently been named ‘The UK’s Most Musical City’ and has been prolific in producing a lot of musical talent. Do you think this would still be true if The Beatles did not become famous and bring the attention of

the world? Is it just something in the water up there?! Who knows? It's got a great pedigree in bands, maybe it's just always been a part of life here, there's still music being played every night off the week up here. This summer you participated in a few festivals, not least returning to Glastonbury (which I caught – excellent by the way!). How did it feel to be back, playing this time on a different stage (but still drawing a massive crowd!)? It's always good to play at glastonbury, it has a special vibe that goes with it. It's been good to the zutons, we've been as punters years ago and appreciate what it's like to be in the field and see something a bit special. This year when we played it was just as the sun was setting, and it was too much, one of the best shoes we’ve done. As well as performing at ‘green’ friendly Glastonbury, you took part in the Forest Tour, hosted and run by The Forestry Commission
to promote British woodland. Is that something that you feel passionately about supporting? To be honest no, we were asked to do it and it sounded like a great place to do a gig, we're all for saving the world but I can't say I passionately support it.
a band as world famous as The Zutons, so are you looking forward to the intimacy of the show? It's good to see the whites of their eyes! It's the first one on the tour so we're gaggin for it at the minute, and what with it being the first one, it's bound to be a bit special.
Mark Ronson’s re-mixed version of ‘Valerie’ has gone on to be a great success. When he first pitched the idea to you, did you have any idea it would take off as much as it did? Not really, it was just nice to be asked, no-one had ever asked to do it before, and we just went with it, and it's great. I think the fact the song has been a hit twice in two years is a great accolade and shows the song to be really good as it could be played a number of ways and still sound good.
You are always a hard working band, either touring or working on new material. What’s next on the cards for you after the tour? Working on new material! You've gotta work all the time really, why stop?
Is there anyone else you would like to work alongside and collaborate with? Lots of people, it's just makin it happen that's hard. Since her inclusion into the band, Abi has attracted a large amount of stage attention, being popular with your fans. Do you plan on recording any tracks with just her vocals up front? There's one on you can do anything were she sings a verse , she's got a great voice, and it's a string to our bow havin a female voice to use. Let’s talk about your 10th November gig at The Leas Cliff Hall, forming part of your UK tour. The Leas Cliff is quite a small venue for

s reported in our last issue; Orange UnsignedAct with Sony Ericson, is once again underway and the
search for Britain’s top Unsigned talent has begun.
Showcasing only the best artists, the competition aims to find the most
promising (currently unsigned) act in the
country, and offer them the top prize of a
recording contract with Universal Records. The prize will not come easy though, with one artist having to prove they’ve got
what it takes to be the next best thing in music, and this year with over 7000
registered entrants, the competition was tough.
The first round of voting is now complete, with all votes received via the public
website counted, and 25 acts together

with a further 29 chosen by the panel,
have been selected to progress through to the next stage. These lucky 54 must now audition live in front of a panel of expert judges to secure their place within the
competition. The panel will remain almost identical to last year; comprising musician & songwriter Alex James, head of A & M
Records Simon Gavin, and new this year will be an additional judge in the form of TV presenter and general music lover;
Lauren Laverne (formerly in her own band; Kenickie).
Premiering Thursday 30th October on
4Music and Sunday 2nd November on
Channel 4 (T4), Orange UnsignedAct with Sony Ericsson will introduce the 54
finalists to the public. Each week you will be able to follow their progress, see who achieves recognition from the judging
panel and who will be invited back as one
of the final 8 to embark on a nation-wide tour, performing gigs around the country to raise support from you; the music loving public.
The Gig Guide can confirm that there is one hopeful from Kent still left in the
competition as we enter the 54 act stage. Klaus Says Buy The Record, is the

he Jam should need no introduction, debuting in 1977 and racking up eighteen top 40 singles and four number 1 hits including the universally recognised; ‘Going Underground’, they are an important part of our music heritage. Since their break up in 1982, when frontman Paul Weller decided to pursue a different musical path, Bruce Foxton & Rick Buckler continued to make music in various forms until a decison was made in 2007 to reunite and ressurrect the old Jam flavour. Paul had already expressed his negative feelings about a reformation many times before, so they knew that they would need to find someone to fill in for his vocals, and that’s where Russel Hastings came in. Being a fan of The Jam, Russel was familiar with their music and knew only too well the level of responsibility
p16 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan
required to replicate Paul Weller’s vocal talents. Jam fans will be pleased to discover that he manages to pull this off with striking acuracy. Dave Moore was also brought in to add a new level of dynamics to the mix with his multi-instrumental skills, and the overall effect is an entertaining live show guaranteed to please both Jam fans and general music lovers alike. Their intensive UK Tour starts on 5th December and brings them to our Margate shores to play the Winter Gardens on the 19th, but ahead of the tour you can grab a copy of the new double disc DVD release; “A First Class Return - From The Jam”, which features their entire sold-out London Forum gig from December 2007, as well as extensive interviews & extra features.
I caught up with Rick Buckler for a chat... The Jam played Kent before, did that play any part in the decision to include Margate’s Winter Gardens in your December tour? “We will always try and get to the towns that may have been overlooked before.” You’ve recently released a 7 track EP, how does it feel to be releasing your music again? “For years I’ve always wanted to revisit these songs, and so to film a show as well is a great feeling.”
What are your plans for the future after the tour is over? “The Christmas break (some break!) but the new year should be a good one, we have plenty of plans for touring other territories and moving the band on.” What would you like to receive for Christmas? “An undisturbed movie”
The Gig Guide 5
Favourite bar snack? “A Topic”
During your entire careers as musicians, what has been your best and/or most memorable gig to play? “The Wembley shows because of the venues prestige and it was an era in my life that seemed to be coming to an end.”
What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “My cat, on a good day.”
The Jam’s music has had a strong effect on the music scene today with many bands still quoting you as influences in their music. How does it feel to have left such an impact on the music world? “This is a real and very flattering bonus, totally unexpected.”
Your pet hate? “Inconsiderate drivers”
Now lets turn the spotlight on you!… Who would you cite as your influences for when you first started out? “Seeing other musicians starting out around me and realising that it was also possible for me to get involved.” …and what music are you listening to now? “I still listen to a lot of my old favorites and rediscovering artist like Annie Lennox, Earth Wind and Fire, and still filling gaps in my collection left by vinyl to CD.” What are your thoughts on reality-based music shows, and what effect (if any) do you think it is having on the public’s appreciation of music? “The prime reason for these shows is obviously to make a successful TV programme, everything else is secondary, I’d like to think that the participants gain something memorable and lasting from their experience. It’s not such a good thing when the industry controls too much. I tend not to watch these shows but most of what I see are well known songs with established styles, easy to relate to, I suppose.”
Message to the world? “There are others out there just like you.”
Tea or Coffee? “Tea, lots of it.” (..and an extra one just for you guys!) What’s your favourite type of Jam? “Strawberry (with peanut butter)” For the latest news and information about all things From The Jam related, be sure to visit the band’s official websites... www.fromthejam.net www.afirstclassreturnfromthejam.co.uk

ike the perfect festival, The Farmhouse is an eclectic mix of the traditional and the avant garde, local and international, relaxation and foot stomping madness. This multi purpose venue has far more soul than the description belies, but it isn’t just that – a place for lunch, for dinner, for a glass of vino or a cocktail, for parties and, most importantly, to see the most talented performers on tour or from within Kent itself. The venue is an intimate one, low lit, with a red velvet stage as a focal point and has so far played host to Kevin Rowland, Andy Smith, Pete Molinari and the Ralfe Band. This is a see all, hear all venue, where you can almost touch the stars! Entry fees are kept as low as possible at £3 on specific nights – they do go higher, but they also go lower, so a night out can cost as little as

£10 with a great performance to boot. The Farmhouse’s small capacity and reasonable prices does mean that they sell out pretty quick so book in advance or arrive early (for a bite to eat maybe) to avoid disappointment. The restaurant is headed up by Rob Cooper, formerly of The Goods Shed and Samphire, and showcases the best local produce available. A traditional east-end pie, mash and liquor is served all day everyday along side a menu that flows with the seasons and is governed by what the fisherman, the farmer and the gameskeeper bring in each day. This is a restaurant without a walk-in fridge because it doesn’t need one – food is sourced, cooked and served fresh each day. Main courses range from £5 to £10 for two courses.

The Gig Guide Awards
Awards
I
n its first year of existence, we at the Gig Guide have been over-whelmed with the depth of talent we have in the East Kent music scene and we believe that this has influenced promoters to bring “mega” bands to East Kent. Never before has there been so many fantastic gigs to attend - this year alone we have seen (in addition to 1 Big Weekend), The Feeling, Scouting for Girls, McFly, Hoosiers, UB40, Aswad, Mark Ronson in East Kent and we are going to see The Zutons, The Stranglers, The Enemy and the Fratellis in the next couple of months.
In order to recognise and acknowledge the talent that we have in this area, we have decided to launch what we hope will be an Annual Event – the GIG GUIDE AWARDS – and in common with other music awards (the Brits, the Mobos etc) , we shall call these “The Gig’s”.
In a glittering ceremony at a yet to be announced venue in East Kent early in 2009, the very best talent will gather to learn who is to be presented with an inaugural “GIG”! The best thing about these awards is that YOU decide who wins – simply complete the form here in the magazine and send it back to us FREE! Categories include Best band, solo artist, newcomer, single and album of the year so start thinking about who you would like to nominate. The ceremony will feature performances from some of the nominated Bands and will be a not to be missed event. Tickets will be publicised in Issue 1 of 2009 and will sell rapidly so watch out for news on this event soon. Continued...

Frank and Philip Thorley Thorley’s Taverns The Thorley’s have introduced live music to many of their pubs and bars and are active in promoting live music in Thanet and East Kent Shann Lee Parker the Diva of East Kent Shann returned to East Kent in 2007 after many years in Spain and has hit the local music scene with a bang!
A highlight of the whole evening will be an award that will not be nominated by readers – our award for ‘Special Contribution to Music in East Kent’, which will be awarded by The Gig Guide ourselves. As a taster, we are delighted to announce the short-list for this award as follows: Sean Baker founder of the “Lounge on the Farm” festival and the Farmhouse venue in Canterbury. The gig guide thought that Sean has made a lasting commitment to music in Kent by creating a unique festival and venue. Daniel Morris the DM Agency Daniel works tirelessly representing many of the best known bands in Kent and is a fierce supporter of Kent music. Denny Barter founder and front man of EK1 Denny founded EK1 over 20 years ago and still has the same enthusiasm and hunger for gigging today. EK1 gig every week around East Kent and are as popular today as they have ever been. p38 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan

Up Close & Personal: Kristie Scotland BY ABBY KEDWELL
J
musicaturfingertips@yahoo.co.uk
ust lately I have been learning to drive (Yay for me) and my driving instructor mentioned about his young daughter and what an amazing voice she had. Obviously every father dotes on their daughter but when I heard her sing I couldn’t believe my ears, she was truly amazing. Surely a 16 year couldn’t sing like that, but sure enough when I went to meet Kristie, she looked the part and had a story to tell with a voice to go with it.
When did you and people around you realise your talents?
“Ever since I can remember, I used to sing Celine Dione in my room and I could always hit the high notes. Like any young girl I loved singing but there was always something more to it for me, it was like my outlet and something I could focus on. My mum was upstairs one day and I started singing Bob Dylan, Forever Young and she came running downstairs thinking that it was on the television, from that day my parents have nurtured my singing and have helped in every way they possible can.”
What would you say your biggest achievement has been?
“It was when I sang at a charity event for a young girl that had Leukaemia. It was an emotional but proud moment. I have also won awards and have participated in loads of events, which has gained me experience and has also helped me decide what direction I want to go in.”
p40 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan
Who is your inspiration and what genre would you like to sing? “I don’t have any one person that inspires me. When I went to V (festival) that was inspirational, seeing all those bands singing in front of thousands of fans gave me goose bumps, I loved it! That’s where I want to be, on a stage in front of people that love my music. I haven’t found my calling yet and I am not sure what genre of music that I want to sing but I have started learning the guitar and I am also getting help with learning to write my own songs which is exciting.”
“Ever since I can remember, I used to sing Celine Dione...”
all again I would start where I am now, going round local pubs and singing with people that appreciate my vocals what ever song I sing. You have to follow your dreams and ambitions and grab every opportunity that comes your way even if it is only to gain experience from it but also with that in mind you must listen to yourself and not everyone around you.”
What will you do next? Do you think there is a lot of help locally for young singers like yourself?
“There is help out there but you have to find it as it rarely comes looking for you. You need to decide what is right for you and think about where you want to go within the music industry before you ask for help from professionals. I went to producers a little too early, I wasn’t comfortable with the songs that I was singing and that’s why I chose to step back a little and start again.”
“ I can’t get enough of the feeling when you get on stage and sing” sing” What would you say to young singers out there?
“Don’t let anyone pigeon hole you into a genre you don’t like singing. I found out the hard way, not that I’m not grateful for everything that was done for me. I just didn’t feel comfortable singing the songs that they wanted me to and it was portrayed in my voice. If I could do it
“I have chosen to start again and pursue Indie music. I can’t get enough of the feeling when you get on stage and sing something that makes me individual and not a teen commercial artist. I will learn to play the guitar and carry on with the piano. This will broaden my horizon and open a few more doors than I have opened already. I have done a lot being so young but I have realised that isn’t the direction that I want to go in. Commercial music isn’t the way forward for me.”
...and she is absolutely right; her voice is made for something that doesn’t fit into the pop genre. It has depth and soul and needs a genre to match. There are many young singers out there that desire so much to make it big within the music industry but by wanting something so badly, they make mistakes. It goes for anything within the entertainment world; you mustn’t let people take advantage to make money from you how ever good their intentions are. Look out for Kristie performing live soon.

Music Reviews The Gig Guide takes a look at some CD’s from Kent bands... Band: ShyChlo and the Boys Title: What’s The Word On The Kerb? Format: EP (5 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
ShyChlo and the boys have a sound unique to the unsigned music scene in Kent. Featuring ‘Shy Chloe’ up front rapping over 'her boys', her well penned lyrics are not only a pleasure to the ears, but a cleverly delivered statement to those who are willing to listen. 'What You Sayin'?' & 'My Life' feature twin vocals with support from secondary vocalist Woely P, giving yet more depth to the ShyChlo music. Look out for 'The Blueprint', a guaranteed crowd pleaser and all-round feel good song, with it's crescendo effect dropping you straight into it's singalong chorus. To quote Chloe herself, she sings; "my aim's to make music for all the classes; the working, the middle, and the ones up their arse's". The band have enough potential so why are they still unsigned? I have a feeling no label yet has the balls to take onboard the fiery tongue of ShyChlo and her boys.
Band: ReoRae Title: Past The Green Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
The first thing that hits you as you hear the choral intro and first few lines of Past The Green's opener; 'Home' is how strikingly familiar ReoRae's voice is to world renowned artist Dido. With music to match, ReoRae's voice is one that is very relaxing and it would be easy to sit and let the mind wander with the warmth of her music flowing over you. 'Where Are You Now?' is another hit, with it's lively upbeat rhythm and laid back, but nonetheless effective vocals from ReoRae, displaying just how good her vocal range can be. This debut EP is filled with beautiful songs and comes highly recommended.
Band: Dry Riser Title: Two Many Chiefs Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
This EP should be owned just for the excellently designed artwork that features all throughout the case, but that's not what we're focusing on today and the music doesn't fail to impress either. All 4 tracks are masterpieces and are a window into the bright future of Dry Riser. Influences of post rock masters; Radiohead can be heard within their music, but none moreso than in the excellent vocals from Nik Ledgard. The opening track; 'Myself' could even have been written by Thom Yorke. The title track changes up the mood, shifting towards more of an acousticelectro number, adding electrified vocals and sharp, punchy rhythm. 'Rushing' brings in slower, clean-guitar melodies and lets Nik Ledgard’s perfect vocals shine above the mix. We hope to hear more from Dry Riser soon.

p42 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan
Band: Jekazol Title: J_K_Z_L ? Format: Demo (3 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Like a thundering train, Jekazol's music is full of heavy riffs and double drummed beats. None moreso than 'The Light That Shines' which relents after 1 minute 17 seconds for a brief interlude before the pace returns. The guitarwork is excellent and the drumming very powerful... quite an achievement when you factor in that there are (currently) only two members in the band. 'T0M0Z0Z' is our favourite with it's catchy guitar hooks and thumping 4/4 beat chorus. Featuring a well placed solo, backed by a rhythm that sounds somewhat funky, it's a mix that works well and gives a slight psychobilly feel to the track. On the tail end of the EP is a well rendered version of Iron Maiden's 'Wrathchild' which finishes the demo off to a high degree.
Band: Precept Title: May 2008 Promo Format: Promo (2 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
The two track promo even though a little short, shows a promising glimpse of what the deal-based hardcore band have to offer. Powerful, driving riffs are mixed with melodic guitar pieces proving Precept are not just another producer of heavy noise. Rob Manhire’s screaming vocals fit well and help empower the songs with a sense of raw energy. 'The Deeper We Sink' sounds fresh with an excellent pre-chorus, and it’s Bridge & Solo prove to be exemplary of Precept's skills as musicians. 'Slowly The Abyss' brings in a more emotional feel with it's heart-felt chorus and well-written bridge. Keep your eyes open for Precept's album due out soon, featuring both these tracks.
Band: Syd Arthur Title: Kingdoms of Experience Format: EP (5 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
The funk hits you as soon as the EP starts with the powerful 'Earthbound', whose chorus is as catchy as the wet sounding wah on the guitars. Every track is a hit on this EP, from the laid back summer feel of 'Diabat' to the shanty sound of 'The Berber Mountain Song'. They are beautifully written, perfectly presented and well produced. It is the title track 'Kingdoms Of Experience' that exposes the full talents of the band though, with heavy bass and funk guitar melding perfectly whilst Liam Magill's vocals fit seamlessly over the beautiful array. Syd Arthur's music is a joy to listen to and you cannot fail to let the funk get deep inside you.

Kieran Gaffney
T
welve year old Kieran (no relation to Dean), is quite something to catch live. Since picking up the sticks and getting his kit a year ago, young Kieran has come a long way and regularly drums alongside mum & dad, who are more publically known as Mixed Emotions. In this short space of time, Kieran has jammed with the likes of Counterfeit Notes, EK1, Ian Shawcross, Antiques Roadshow and Archive, and is being taught by Dave White. Keen to expand his skills, Kieran is learning to read music and is often seen talking to other drummers, burning their ears with as many questions as possible!
