I know that some of the local bands had decided not to hang up their instruments, and instead continued to gig all over December. Three cheers for the hardworking musicians, who provide us with continued entertainment! As we head into February & March, there are two big events on the horizon for The Gig Guide.... the first annual ‘Gig Guide Awards’, and the imminent release of our brand new website! A venue has been set for the awards but the date is still to be confirmed at present. I can guarantee there will be plenty of live music, drink, food, drunken banter and not forgetting the ceremony itself, where the deserving artists will pick up their coveted awards. It’s going to be one hell of an evening that’s for sure! More details on the ceremony and the new website can be found later in this edition.
Since starting life in the Autumn of 2007, our aim has remained the same; to help promote the local music scene through public awareness. Each issue contains music news, reviews, features and interviews as well as comprehensive gig listings so you are never lost on an idea for a great night out.

Ready for some Flack?
T
BY STUART KEELER
he Flack are a new local originals band with a sound that mixes indie and ska influences. The four piece consists of Guitarist and Front man Chris Maclean, Guitarist Richard Harvey, Bass Guitarist Steve Cheyne and Drummer Joe Fendt. All the guys have been playing locally for busy covers bands and thought it was about time for a new project with which they could start writing their own songs. After recording their first two songs; ‘Animal’ and ‘Still Intoxicated’, the band are now ready to get back in the studio with three more tracks ready to go. There is a lot of excitement surrounding this band with people constantly asking for gig dates and new recordings.

The band are prioritising on finishing their album before concentrating on pushing for gigs in spring/summer but you can be sure they will be playing at a venue near you soon.

he 14th November will go down as a very memorable day for the Maidstone based band. Their last ever ‘Youth Of Generation’ (YOG) gig also coincided with the release of their debut album; ‘First Addiction’.
Relaxing in the dressing room (bathed under the glamourous showbiz lights) before the show, the band looked calm and collected although there was an essence of nervousness in the air. Having been a staple with the YOG shows over the years, you’d think this would be a walk in the park so to speak, but then this was their last show; their last time to shine and go out with a bang before heading out to newer pastures. Not only that, this was the release of their debut album, which they’d worked so hard to get recorded and now is about to be unleashed onto the public.
p8 | The Gig Guide | Feb - Mar
The guys contemplating before the show
Once it was their time to hit the stage though, they looked every bit the
headliners and the nerves (if still present) never surfaced. They were confident, playing
through their set without hesitation and knew how to work the crowd who already strong in support for the Junky’s, were listening with awe.
The Corn Exchange is a good venue for bands to play. With quite a large open hall area, a sizeable stage, private dressing rooms and a separate bar area it seems that everything is there for a great night of music. It has served Shotgun Junky well over the years but they are itching to spread further afield and spread their music to new ears such as those found on the east coast of Kent. “ We are eager to play different venues and explore new areas.” areas.” - Quinn Brierly That’s where the album will help to promote the band, giving them a physical slice of Junky music to distribute. Featuring material covering their career so far, it is a
good example of their musical back catalogue. You can find a full review of the album in the music reviews found later in this edition.
The crowd enjoying the show.
Guitarist Guy Anthony strikes a pose. The album is no longer available online through the band’s Myspace page, but you might be able to persuade them to bring the opportunity back! Alternatively, catch them at one of their live gigs and pick up your
copy personally from the band, not only will you bag yourself the album, but also the

he end of the year not only brought us Christmas festivities, but also the moment to decide who should be crowned ‘best band’ in the Grand Final of the Supreme Battle of the Bands competition. The event, held at The Zebra Bar (Maidstone) as part of Promoter Sue Bell’s regular Wednesday ‘Sounds @ Zebra’ night, showcased the pinnacle of new music talent from around the county. Over 14 weeks, 32 carefully selected entrants had battled through each round

Battle Bands Final
The turn out was impressive, proving that both Sue and the bands had promoted well, boosting the already growing popularity of these artists on the local music scene. The rules remained largely the same; participants must play a 30 minutes comprised of their own material. However, for this final appearance with christmas cheer, the bands were required to perform a cover of a christmas song in their own style; something that proved to be interesting! After all four bands had performed, the time came for judging to begin. This was

achieved in a fair manner, with four professional judges in the form of Gray Cooper from Holland Road Studio's, Cliff Williams from Sharon Music, Chris Hunter from the Kent Messenger Group and finally myself, representing The Gig Guide. Every member of the 340 strong crowd also received a voting slip, enabling everybody present a chance to cast their opinion. After a short break to allow all votes to be collated, thirst’s to be quenched and bands to rest a little, the result was ready to be announced.....

First place went to The Novels. Congratulations to them for just pipping He Who Dares, The Mondays in third place and Aliquot Flow in Fourth. Votes were close, with only a few percent separating the ranking of positions. This showed just how high the standard was for all four bands, and they are all set to do well whatever path they take in 2009. For The Novels, having only been around since early 2008, the band have already come a long way and have built up quite a fanbase with their catchy powerpop tunes. Winning such an esteemed Battle of the Bands will provide them with an extra confidence boost and we look forward to hearing some of the new material they will professionally record. Sue has already jumped straight into preparations for the next event, titled ‘Ultimate Battle of the Bands 2009’. All artists are welcome to audition, even those that took part in previous events and may do so by leaving a message for Sue on her myspace blog. Rules remain the same and once again the top prize is £400 cash plus a days recording at Holland Road Studios. p14 | The Gig Guide | Feb - Mar

BY STUART KEELER
hasing dreams is a title most apt for Deal’s singer/songwriter Kayley Weller, and her debut album. Since 2003, the rising star has devoted all free time to penning and recording her first country-rock album, fuelled by the inspiration of watching one of her idols; Bruce Springsteen. It was immediately after his ‘Rising’ tour that Kayley went out and used her savings to purchase the guitar that started off the journey. “I started writing, and the more I wrote, the more I found it just came naturally to me” - Kayley Weller
When times were hard or she was unsure of where life was heading, writing
music was always the saviour and has helped to clarify her priorities. Kayley’s music is already starting to make an impact, not only in the local music scene but also with one of her biggest influences; Meatloaf. Having seen some of the videos on her youtube channel, the star has expressed interest in working with Kayley in the future which perhaps is yet another dream to chase. In addition to this accolade, one of Kayley’s songs; ‘Long Drive Home’, has been chosen by the Californian Highway Patrol for use as backing music on the menu of their training DVD, shown to 30,000 people across Canada and the US. continued overleaf... Feb - Mar | The Gig Guide | p17
Feature: Kayley Weller Not wanting to rest on her laurels, Kayley has already begun writing for her second album and is about to embark on a tour of east Kent venues. We caught up to see what else she had planned for the new year.. You’ve said that the point at which you decided to sing and play guitar was after Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Rising’ tour in 2003. How did the tour affect your decision? “As soon as I came off the tour, I went and bought a guitar, I started writing more and just started taking music more seriously. It was something I wanted to do as a profession, but with school and everything I figured I would just do it as a hobby. Then as the years went on, Bruce toured more and I ended up following him all over the world, and I realised that the only thing I was really passionate about was music so when I came off the Bruce tour last year that I decided to quit my job and do music professionally.” Did you take lessons to play the guitar or were you completely self taught? “I was completely self taught. I think I had one lesson to try and get more advanced but I didn’t like it, so continued teaching myself.” Can you play any instruments other than guitar? “Unfortunately no, I did try and learn to play the keyboard, but I couldn’t get on with it, but maybe someday.” Do you have a particular favourite venue in Kent? “As I have only just started out, I haven’t played very many venues yet, but my favourite is The Theatre Royal in Margate. It is such a lovely theatre and I had such an awesome time playing there.”
p18 | The Gig Guide | Feb - Mar
Which artist(s) do you tip as potential ‘stars of tomorrow’? “There are so many, but acoustic singer/songwriter Luke Jackson defiantly, if he doesn’t make it big, I don’t know who will.” Who is your favourite band/artist from Kent? “My favorite artist would have to be my incredible bass player Antony Bartlett, he has such an amazing talent and I'm incredibly lucky to have him accompany me on stage. We have so much fun making music together. Another favorite is Luke Jackson, he has an amazing talent, for such a young age.”
Kayley with Anthony Bartlett
Who would you like to collaborate with? “The two people I would most like to collaborate with are Bruce Springsteen and Meat Loaf. As for Kent musicians, I would like to work with a young singer called Luke Jackson.” What do you have in store for 2009? “I have lots of gigs lined up which I’m really excited about and I have been asked to co-star in a new US drama series called ‘This Hard Land’ which is an amazing opportunity and cant wait to be part of. My music is also going to be featured in the show.”
Highlight of career so far? “The biggest highlight so far is being credited alongside Bruce Springsteen on the Californian Highway Patrol’s new training DVD. When the credits go up Bruce’s name is first, then mine is underneath. That was such an honour as he is the reason I got into music in the first place.” Favourite & least favourite thing about being a singer/songwriter? “My favourite thing is performing, I love to sing and play guitar so being able to do it everyday is great. Its not so much a least favourite thing, but writers block is something I don’t like. I love writing, and it can get frustrating when nothing is flowing, as being able to write is the thing I most depend on.” What’s the most rock and roll thing you’ve done? “The most rock and roll thing I’ve done is at the end of a Bruce Springsteen show in Germany I ran back stage and greeted him as he came off stage. That was awesome!” Have you ever deliberately told someone you are ‘the daughter of Paul Weller’ just for a reaction? “No, but I do get a lot people asking me if Paul Weller is my dad and he has had so many people phone him up thinking he was the real Paul Weller, which is quite funny!”
The Gig Guide 5: Favourite Bar Snack? “Peanuts.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “A cat, but only if I’m feeling particular strong on that day!” Message to the world? “Its never to late to achieve your dream, so go and get it, and be who you want to be.” Your pet hate? “When people argue, saying they are right about something, when for a fact they are actually wrong.” Tea or Coffee? “Tea” Myspace > www.myspace.com/kayleyweller YouTube > uk.youtube.com/user/kayweller1 The Gig Guide has a copy of Chasing Dreams to give away to one lucky reader. ust some light reading to make you giggle. I asked 20 musically minded
(in some way, shape or form) individuals to give me ways to get famous
within the music industry, merely a playful article not to be taken too
seriously.
Here is what they had to say…… Linkon Member of ‘Trash’ “Whether you’re a singer or in a band, getting an agent is the best way to go. A good manager or agent will make it his job to do all the leg work, all you gotta do is be fabulous and being able to play an instrument or sing is obviously an advantage.”
Mitchell Landlord “Gigging at clubs and pubs. Karaoke, open mike nights, anything that has been advertised locally is a great start. Maybe one day an agent will walk in just as you are singing your heart out. Agents do make appearances but you have to promote yourself and get well-known first before anyone even batters an eyelid.”
Lauren Pianist “Go to college, get good grades, take singing lessons, look after yourself and your voice and believe in the ability to entertain people. That is just the beginning; research your target audience, find band members if you’re not flying solo and practice. Then grab every opportunity that is thrown at you from bars to large scale gigs. The sky’s the limit!”
Dapper University student (Music Technology) “Slog your guts out through a Uni course, get connections and get sending your stuff to them.”
p38 | The Gig Guide | Feb - Mar
Sue Young person’s career adviser “In my line of work I see lots of talented young people with no idea of how to get into the music industry. I believe in good old “door knocking”. Copy your CD as many times as you can afford and get tapping. Give them to anyone that you think will make a difference. One day your CD will fall into the right hands.”
Hugh College Teacher “Using the media and dance students to do your videos, helps you out and costs nothing then just upload to YouTube. Next step is to advertise the YouTube link through facebook / myspace / bebo status updates. The more hits you get the better chance of the top dogs taking note of your work.”
Anna Singer / Guitarist “X-Factor / Reality Shows are a good bet. If you are good then someone out there will notice you, don’t go on there to win, go on to show us what you got and we could take a liking to ya. Look at Lemar, Liberty X, Gareth Gates and Rhydian.”
Charlene Backing Singer “I’ve always said stalking Simon Cowell would be the sure way of getting a music contract, or was that an injunction?”
Heidi Advertising Manager
Charlie Exotic Dancer
“Get your face known. Big Brother, Ship wrecked, Britain’s next top model and Ladette to Lady. Prance about, act like a diva, sing in the shower, be outrageously annoying and get yourself noticed. Works every time, oh, no wait that only works if you can sing!”
“I see people that are in the music industry everyday in my job. While you get your jubilees out you could always shove a CD under their nose, it may work. Being in the right place at the right time is, key.”
Lilly Singer
Marcel DJ “Be as camp and gay as you possibly can! Gay people seem to have it all, they’re enthusiastic, born drama queens and natural performers. Being gay is like having a ticket to being eccentric and let’s face it, most stars are just that.”
“Be inventive. Being able to sing or play an instrument is just half the work. Having something that a production company can use, they will bite your arm off for it. Gimmicks, a look, a certain way of singing will impress them and set you aside from other artists. You have to have that special something to sell records.”
Terry Avid music listener
Jay Musician
“Marry a producer, why not?”
Gemma Kiss and Tell “Get your kit off, that’s how famous people roll.”
Trevor London club promoter “Knowing someone within the music industry gets your foot firmly in the door as you know they will obviously listen to your music for you. They can then pass it someone that has great influence. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
Tom Drummer “I have heard them ‘getting famous’ websites are alright, if you sing that is. You pay a fee and are given heads up on auditions within your area. Some even do a reel that you can sing on, like a mini music video. Worth a try if you are in a no win situation, kind of last resort.”
“Might sound mad but busking is how I got noticed. Everyone hears you, you sing what you like for as long as you like. You may get asked to move on but take it as constructive criticism.”
Morgan Model “Be good looking. Models and actors, at some point in their career try their luck at singing. Being a stunner doesn’t always mean that you can sing so I would get a second opinion before you stand in front of Simon Cowell and blurt out a well known classic and destroy it.”
Dara Owner of a music store “Call on the music stores. I have a hand full of people that come and give their CD’s to me and I play them within the store. Believe it or not I have a fair few people ask me who is the artist is.”
Wabs Promotions “Three words; The Cheeky Girls! It’s easy, be born in Transylvania, get your mum to write your songs and borrow your little sister clothes. What a winner!”

Music Reviews The Gig Guide takes a look at some CD’s from Kent bands... Band: The Long Weekend Title: 20 Minutes, 13 Stops Format: Album (12 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Medway's The Long Weekend have produced a fine debut album here. It's well crafted and full of catchy songs ranging from the Clash-esque 'Bastard Son' to more popier numbers such as 'Record' sounding closer to more modern bands like 'The Rifles'. For those who love the sound of punk infused indie-pop, this will fit the bill for you nicely, but in a market that is getting a little bit saturated with similar sounding artists, for me The Long Weekend's music is in danger of being drowned out. This is a good album nevertheless and it will be interesting to see which direction the band travel.
Band: UpCDownC Title: Embers Format: Album (10 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Post rockers UpCDownC have come a long way to release the album 'Embers'. The material has been ready for a year, but due to many difficulties arising between band and record label; Tap 'n' Tip records, the album was only finally released in October 2008. It was worth the wait though... full of powerful post rock guitar anthems, Embers delivers on many fronts and the band should be more than proud of their achievements despite the difficulties. 'Murmurs Part 2' is a favourite stand out track of the album, full of beautiful melodies, it has an anthemic quality akin to the mastery of Sigur Ros. The band have already prepared a second album called 'Firewolf' due to be released soon. I for one am anxiously waiting to see what the next album will bring.
Band: Colt.44 Title: One Horse Town Format: Album (10 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Colt.44 do not believe in a slow introduction to their music. By 12 seconds in, not only is the beautifully crunched guitar in full swing but the thumping rock beat of 'Sick' drags you along, like it or not! Luckily for me, I did enjoy the ride. Full of very well developed pieces, Colt.44 know how to write catchy rock hits but also display the ability of their talents to craft each song into it's own direction. They draw from many influences, but one occasionally shines through and that is the sound of Metallica. By that, I don't mean the newer half-arsed material either; I'm talking about the early, original Metallica that later went on to dominate and change so much of the music scene. If these guys continue to produce songs of this quality, I can see big things ahead.

Music Reviews
Band: The Trouser Trumpets Title: Save The Jellyfish Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Like a 1950's Rock 'n' Roll classic, the EP opens with the title track rolling in and lulling you into a uncontrollable sway. 'Ali Baba's Camel' is just as peculiar but changes up the pace with a Beatles inspired big beat march. It is very reminiscent of the free love 60's era in perhaps more ways than one as suggested by the lyrics; "As for what we all want.... lots of LSD!". 'Pasadena' & 'Hey Jose' are less catchy and do not mirror the first two tracks of the EP.
Gig Guide Verdict:
The Trouser Trumpets are something unique... they will never appear with the likes of other pop music in today's culture but instead hold their place as a novelty, bringing something fresh in what can become a stale environment.
Band: Spy Genius Title: The Devil’s Typist Format: Album (12 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Take a lot of funk, some good old fashioned no-nonsense rock and mix in a little cheese-laden synth playing and you're close to the unique, energising sound of SpyGenius. I mustn't forget to mention the excellent vocals that fit perfectly to this mix; something that's not easy to pull off, though when you analyse lyrics such as; "Jesus is alive on pineapple drive", all becomes clear! That's not to say all of the songs are quirky pieces, songs such as 'A bottle Of Reds & Two Good Friends' are very warming with their calming sweet melodies and gently vocals. The album is great for feeling good and my favourite song has to be 'The Ballad Of Dr T F Bundy & His Hirsute Sweetheart' for it's simple funk-filled obscurity!
Band: Shotgun Junky Title: First Addiction Format: Album (12 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
After listening to other albums which deliver immediately on play, Shotgun Junky's debut opens gently with an intro before getting to the goods. Something which I feel is genuinely not needed and adds nothing to the album. The second track (or first 'proper' track) is 'Destiny', which doesn't do much more to kick-start the album but thankfully 'What's Inside' & 'Run' come close behind, picking up the pace and would have made for a better choice of opener. This album is a real mix of songs... there are plenty of good songs to be had but the album as a piece does not flow well. Look out for; 'Not Your Man', 'Shadows', 'Divinity' and 'You Know' among the highlights.
If you would like us to review your music, please send a copy to: p42 | The Gig Guide | Feb - Mar
Band: Hot Rats Title: Tour de France Format: Album (12 Tracks) Full of energy and little ditties, 'Tour de France' is a quirky album and may be hard for most to get into. However, if you like fast, upbeat folk, then you will be in for a treat with Hot Rats. Their music speaks volumes about their hectic and busy calender as hard working and talented musicians.
Gig Guide Verdict:
Try and catch them live, for this is where they really shine with songs like 'Santy Anna' and 'Farewell to Ireland'... true jig inspiring tunes that will have the whole crowd up and moving in no time at all.
Band: Motion Picture Soundtrack Title: The Shapes We Fear Are Of Our Own Format: Album (11 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Big, bold and clever sums up this remarkable album from Motion Picture Soundtrack (MPS). In a reflection of their namesake, their music has massive depth of a cinematic quality. Sometimes I hear the melancholy of late 90's band 'Mansun' appearing, but MPS have taken that sound and developed it into something much more grandiose. This album is powerful, putting a lot of top selling artists to shame and is something to come back to again and again, whenever you feel the need to get lost and totally consumed by the beautiful music. Top marks for a top album... buy it now, you wont regret it!
Band: Jon Woode Title: Country Roads Format: Album (12 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Jon is a musician of remarkable talent; being able to sing and play guitar, bouzouki, ukelele and piano. His songwriting ability is put on show with the album 'Country Roads' and it doesn't fail to impress. Stripping out the need for drums to carry the beat, the complexity of the guitar layers are more than enough to provide the listener with a joyful experience as Jon works through his songs, it's easy to imagine him sitting in the room playing you your very own private gig. This album is perfect to put on when you want to forget everything else around you and chill out, breathing in Jon's sweet songs.
