fter the shock withdrawal of Red List LIVE from the festival scene, some may have been forgiven for thinking Kent’s hopes for a jam-packed summer of fabulous music was a lost cause. However, whilst quantity has diminished, the quality has skyrocketed with both Lounge on the Farm and The Hop Farm securing an amazing line-up. There are plenty of smaller festivals occurring in towns and villages too all across Kent, and it’s great to see that community spirit keeping the local music scene alive. We’ve also got two fantastic competitions for you lucky people; a great little Marshall mini-amp, plus tickets to one of the summers biggest events; The Hop Farm Festival! Don’t forget to keep checking our website regularly, where you can find the latest news and updates on all music in Kent.

PORT LYMPNE WILD ANIMAL PARK
a new species of festival...
19th-21st June 2009
I
t is with great sadness to report that this year’s Red List LIVE festival will not be taking place.
The move has done nothing to revive the hopes that the Port Lympne site can be successfully used as a festival space, following on from Zoo8 last year. However, all the organisers behind Red List LIVE are in agreement that due to increased
competition from other local festivals, they were no longer in a position to be able to run the festival to their original plans. The decision was made early so as to cause as few problems as possible for all parties. We hope to see the festival make its debut in 2010.
The Official Press Release: Red List LIVE makes decision based upon the “unacceptable risk” of holding event in current economic climate. Red List LIVE will still programme a series of smaller events this summer before returning as a festival next year as part of a five year project. Directors of Red List LIVE - a multi-events project conceived as a fundraising initiative for endangered animals - have been forced to postpone plans for an inaugural festival to be held at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent this Summer. A Primary consideration is the obligation to the charitable aims the festival was set-up to support. Red List LIVE was due to donate a sum of money from the event to The Aspinall Foundation which is committed to conservation through captive breeding, education and reintroduction. The decision has been made at an early stage, before final acts were booked, promotion began and site work undertaken, as a pragmatic response to current troubled and uncertain financial conditions. Specifically, established local festivals are expected to have a greater impact on Red List LIVE than previously envisaged, particularly with nearby Hop Farm’s capacity increase and anticipated
p6 | The Gig Guide | June - July
expansion to become a camping festival. With Red List LIVE unable to compete with such bigger, more well-known brands, it will look at holding a series of smaller one-off events and gigs in the South East through 2009 with some of the bands scheduled to play the festival. Red List LIVE festival director Eddie Hill says: “We are very upset at having to make such a hard call, however we are confident that we have done what is right for the cause. Foremost in our mind was the greater problems it could have created had we made the decision further down the line. “You only get one chance at making a good first impression and we’re determined Red list LIVE’s festival will be the best in the South East. Red List LIVE would like to thank everyone that has supported the festival and the cause, and to apologise that we have had to postpone until next year.” “We will be making full refunds to those who have purchased festival tickets, but fully intend for the Red List LIVE brand to continue, and we hope to see everyone shortly at one of our soon-to-beannounced events.”

ince giving you a taste of what to expect in our last issue, many more bands have been added to the bill of the excellent Lounge On The Farm festival.
One of the worlds greatest DJs; Krafty Kuts is to play the ‘Hoedown’ stage on Saturday, whilst the ‘Sheepdip’ sees The Temper Trap, The Pan I Am and Casiokids playing. Sunday once again sees more local bands take to the stage featuring some of the finest acts in Kent today… Underground Heroes, Krissy & The Jackdaws, Black Market Karma, Tom Allalone & the 78’s, Yearner Babies, The Lovedays, Soundcasters, Monday Street, The Mind Without Maths, Hotrods n Dragsters and Tom Williams & the Boat. Over on the other stages, The Furthur Tent sees Nostalgia 77
presents Skeleton added for the last slot on Sunday night, consisting of a 7-piece live band fronted by jazz/funk hero Nostalgia 77 who play brand new psychedelic afrobeat and funk. Whilst the Farm Folk stage is hosting Chatham’s singer/songwriter Kid Harpoon for a Sunday afternoon session, plus Son of Dave, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Josh Weller and Wild Wolves are also appearing. Saturday nights bill in the Cowshed sees “fairy-tale Indie pop sensations” Golden Silvers motivate the crowd. 2009 also sees another field added to the festival in the form of The Meadows. Whilst not hosting any music, there will be plenty on offer from an open air theatre to Speakers Corner. If a racing mind is the last thing you want then head to The Red Tents for chai time and some physical and spiritual healing – reiki, yoga or whatever floats your mind and helps you unwind. If The
Meadows aren’t peaceful enough, then Natural Pathways will take you on a bushcraft course out into the Kent countryside, building shelters, foraging and cooking on the open fire! For those local unsigned bands eager for a slot at the prestigious festival, LOTF have set up a special website for applications, due to the exceptionally high demand created this year! Based on a voting system, once registered bands will need to get support from fans to help promote them up the ranks in the hope of being chosen as the top acts to play. The website for application (and voting) is www.yousaytheyplaylotf.co.uk There’s no denying LOTF offers a very diverse mix of activities and entertainment across just one weekend in July, all under the ethos of having a fun and good time. News: The Kooks in Margate
M
argate’s Winter Gardens have once again managed to secure another top band for their stage.
Mid-way through their world tour to promote their latest album; Konk, the 16th July sees The Kooks visit Kent for a unique show at the Margate venue. Hailing from Brighton in 2004, the band took their name from the David Bowie song ‘Kooks’ after forming at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music where they all studied. Virgin records signed the band in 2005 after witnessing them play the Brighton Free Butt Festival and, although reluctant to release a debut album immediately, the now critically acclaimed ‘Inside In/Inside out’ finally appeared in January 2006 The bands latest album; Konk
after the band had finished extensive touring. Their debut was well received, reaching number 2 in the UK album charts, giving them 6 top 40 hits (including the famous ‘naive’) and selling over 2,000,000 copies. The second album; Konk, has reached number 1 in the UK album charts and the first release from it (‘Always Where I Need to Be’) has been their highest charting single to date. Always a favourite on the summer festival scene, The Kooks do not dissapoint when playing live and you should try and catch them at least once. There have been rumours that work has already started to produce a third album.. watch this space! www.margatewintergardens.co.uk www.thekooks.com

FILTHY
Feature: Filthy Dukes
T
he Krautrock Kaptain’s desk had seen better days. Conny Plank, legendary producer of Kraftwerk, had built the mixing desk to his own specs, using it on everything from Autobahn to the Eurythmics’ debut and Ultravox’s Vienna, before his untimely death in 1987. The desk had lain in his studio outside Cologne, switched off and dormant, adrift in cobwebs. There was only one other mixing desk like it: purpose built by Conny for Can, it was now a permanent working exhibit in a museum. But maybe there was still life – still cutting-edge, robo-soul tunes – lurking under the Krautdust…? The dance rock DJs and promoters had seen some great nights. Their London club Kill Em All had progressed from Camden’s gloriously grotty Barfly to the bodysonic dancefloor of ultra-club Fabric. The duo, Olly Dixon and Tim Lawton, called themselves Filthy Dukes, and they dug the records being put out by DFA in New York and Output in London. They booked early gigs by Bloc Party, Justice, Cut Copy, Crystal Castles, and Late Of The Pier – bands who fitted the DJ-slashpromoters’ musical vision of a banging night that mixed the energy of a live band with the power of dance music. Olly and Tim watched their bands soundcheck, watched them set up, watched how they worked the crowd, worked out how their own DJ sets could complement and enhance the live music. Like The Chemical Brothers back in p12 | The Gig Guide | June - July
the glory days of the Heavenly Social, they had a rare worm’s eye view of the nuts and bolts of what made a Big Bangin’ Tune. They put that understanding and feel to work on their first remix of The Rakes’ ‘22 Grand Job’ – a big song, retooled and rebooted which went on to be a dancefloor smash in its own right. As did their remix of The Maccabees ‘X-Ray’ that followed it. Maybe the Filthy Dukes, brimming with their shopfloor/dancefloor savvy about the craft of writing songs, could make their own stand and make their own music… It’s night time at Club Ralph (it’s always night time there), the northwest London studio that Filthy Dukes call home. It’s here that Olly and Tim work with the band’s third member, producer Mark Ralph. It’s here that Conny Plank’s old desk now lives, having been rescued from Cologne and lovingly restored by Mark. It’s here that their album, a genremelting electro record with an indie heartbeat, has been lovingly, tweakingly, analoguely put together. ‘Nonsense In The Dark’ features proper songs – ones to move the head and your heart as well as the feet. It’s here where the three Dukes marshalled the disparate-but-united talents of a magnificent line-up of guest vocalists to help make their
debut album. Tim himself takes up vocal duties, both for the live show and album’s dancefloor juggernaut ‘Absolute Body Control’. A kind of groovy chaos informed the making of the first track
DUKES natural choice to ask Sam to sing on our first track. Sam recorded his vocals in his bedroom while his mum was sleeping next door. Those demo vocals had a kind of magic property to them that we never managed to recreate in the studio. So much of what made it onto the single is Sam singing in hushed tones from his bedroom. ‘This Rhythm’ was our first finished track and became the benchmark for the rest of the album.”
Then there’s the limited edition single ‘Tupac Robot Club Rock’. The thunderous tune – big beats, big riffs – think Daft Punk goes hip hop, features a rap from Philadelphia outfit Plastic Little. Championed by Zane Lowe and Sara Cox on Radio 1, it’s a major moment in every Filthy Dukes live show after taking Glastonbury and Bestival by storm.
they recorded. The vocoded digital soul of ‘This Rhythm’, featuring Samuel Dust from Late Of The Pier on vocals. Olly: “Late Of The Pier had contacted us a few years ago about playing Kill Em All at the Barfly, we loved them – they used to have their synths on ironing boards. So it was a
Fired-up and bristling with song ideas the trio continued assembling their dream team of vocalists; frYars, Brandon Curtis (Secret Machines), Foreign Islands, To My Boy, and Sunny Days Sets Fire all added to the album’s sonic palette. Orlando Weeks of The Maccabees sings on the title track of ‘Nonsense In The Dark’; a twinkling, wee-hours, ambientthrob gem with a tasteful hint of Kraut. Its gorgeous melancholy is the beating heart of the album, and its title is a neat encapsulation of the band’s approach.
Mark: “Connie Plank’s desk was fundamental to the sound of the album. It certainly made me fall in love with old analogue equipment again. Everything’s analogue on the album. We only use Pro Tools as a tape machine. It’s turned our minds back to how everyone used to work – these days people make dance music on a laptop on an aeroplane! But when you hear something that’s a bit rickety and fuzzy and hissy, it sounds fresh and brand new. After ten years where purely digital recording has come to dominate, people yearn for that rough edge.” Performance is where Filthy Dukes are at. They’re taking ‘Nonsense In The Dark’ out on the road, and they won’t be hunkering behind some computers twiddling knobs or blinding us with a light show. These songs aren’t sleek android-electronica: they’re bleeping, popping analogue shakedowns, all elbows and knees and heart and soul. With the Dukes joined by a live drummer and Tim takes centre stage, effortlessly making all the songs his own. In true prog tradition they’re even building a monolithic stage prop! Meanwhile, their status as indemand remixers continues apace, with new commissions for White Lies, Bloc Party and Lil Wayne cohort Kevin Rudolph. They took time out to have a chat with The Gig Guide about their crazy, filthy world. (continued overleaf...) June - July | The Gig Guide | p13
Feature: Filthy Dukes CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN’T DISCOVERED IT YET? “It's electronic pop i guess but it's not as simple as that. We cover a lot of sounds and our influences are vast. There's a track with some rappers from Philly that has a prog style riff, there's electro pop with Tommy Sparks, dance instrumentals, 80's synth. Most importantly there are songs. It's not a dance album which people who have heard us dj may expect. You need to buy the album and listen to get it. It sounds like a lot of different styles on paper but they all come together to make our sound.” HOW DID YOU GUYS FIRST GET INTERESTED IN MAKING MUSIC? “Music has always been my first love and i've been djing for 11 years. When I started the club night (Kill Em All) with Olly, we had lots of live bands and dance dj's playing together. Bands like The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem were coming through and Labels like Output and DFA were pushing things forward. I guess that was when i really wanted to be part of this sound. Bands using old synths and creating music you can dance to. The first production that we did was a remix for The Rakes 22 Grand Job, when Olly and I first worked with Mark, and we all really got a taste for it. We did a few more remixes and then realised that we were giving away a lot of our ideas. That's when we started writing our own material with the help of our record label fiction.” WHO WOULD YOU SAY HAS INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE? “This is a long list. All three of us have contrasting tastes but we all, luckilly have base artists and sounds that we all love. The Krautrock movement has been a massive influence. Mark owns the desk that Conny Plank built. He produced all the big Krautrock albums and worked with p14 | The Gig Guide | June - July
Kraftwerk, Neu!,Devo, Ultravox and the Eurythmics. So all these acts! More contemporary artists that have played at Kill Em All and artists like LCD, Chemical Brothers, Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax Late of the Pier, through to weird acts like Jefferson Starship, Rush and Tangerine Dream, and then poppy stuff like Fleetwood Mac and Squeeze.” IS THERE AN EXPLANATION BEHIND THE NAME; DO YOU THINK OF YOURSELVES AS DUKES, AND WHICH OF YOU ARE FILTHY?! “The name came about a long time ago, Olly had a design and visuals group called Dukes of Science and we thought about using the name but it sounds like a drum and bass outfit. We kept the Dukes part and ended up with Filthy. If i remember correctly Olly thought he was texting me with names but he was texting his brother (also Tim) by mistake. His brother was sending silly names and i think Filthy was one of them, but we both liked it. Ha. I don't think we're particulary Duke like or Filthy. I guess some of our sounds are quite filthy!” TELL US ABOUT YOUR ‘KILL EM ALL’ NIGHT AT FABRIC, WHICH HAS BEEN GOING STRONG FOR 5 YEARS NOW. “It's very important to how we've grown as dj's and artists. We've seen lots of bands come through our night. We had early gigs for Bloc Party, Late of the Pier, We Are Scientists, Justice and Simian Mobile Disco were resident djs for us at the very beginining. We always used to go to sound checks and watch the bands and we learnt a lot from it. We've also seen a lot of bands perform and it's all an inspiration. It is also a great big disco. that is very important. We've been at Fabric for a long time now and feels like a second home to us. We always keep the line ups fresh and still push the live meets dj style of the night. That's very
important to us. Also keep on finding new acts and giving them a platform to play on. We've just started up a smaller Kill Em All at the Queen of Hoxton in London so we can put on some of the smaller acts that aren't established enough to play at Fabric.” YOU’VE JUST COME OFF YOUR ALBUM TOUR AND YOU DIDN’T PLAY ANY VENUES IN KENT. DO YOU BELIEVE IT LACKS SUITABLE VENUES? “I guess so. There's nothing really on the tour route. We play a
lot of club shows all over the country and I'm not sure if there are any venues that would do the live thing in amongst a club night. A lot of clubs come to us for bookings but we've never been offered anything form Kent. We've never even dj’ed at a club in Kent. We did dj at Lounge On The Farm last year. It was lots of fun.” WHAT’S TOURING LIKE? ANYTHING FUNNY OCCUR ON YOUR TRAVELS? AND WHAT WAS THE STRANGEST THING YOU SAW? “Touring is fun but also hard work. Olly and i are used to dj’ing which involves turning up and playing tunes to people. Live is a different beast altogether though. There's lots of stuff to carry, lots of driving, setting up, packing down, more carrying and more driving. But, doing the show is a lot of fun. it's fantastic being up there playing your own music. We played at The Adelphi in Hull, that was pretty weird. It's a venue that's been going for 25 years but it's basically an end of terrace house with a venue at the back! We drove down this little street thinking no way this must be the wrong road but there it was. It was great night though. Some of the views from Travelodges have been pretty interesting. Check out our blog for some videos.”
LET’S TALK ABOUT ‘NONSENSE IN THE DARK’. YOU MUST BE PRETTY EXCITED TO HAVE AN ALBUM UNDER YOUR BELT? “It's an amazing feeling. it took a long time to sink in that it is was finally out there. it also took us a long time to make, and at times we wondered if it would ever get finished and released. We were doing the live show for nearly a year before it was released so when we’d play, nobody knew any of the songs. Getting a crowd to dance along to a song they don't know is really hard. Now the album is out you see peolpe singing along which is great. In fact we played at the Camden Crawl the other night and someone at the front was singing the words to Messages so loud that i couldn't here myself sing!” IT ALSO FEATURES A PLETHORA OF GUEST VOCALS; IS EVERY TRACK WILDY DIFFERENT OR DOES EVERYONE HAVE A SIMILAR STYLE?! “We decided that all the artists had to have a connection to us either through remixes or kill em all. As for the sound, we're lucky that most of the artists have a similar style of vocal. Plastic Little and Mark from Foriegn Islands stand out with their vocal styles but it helps to keep the tracks sounding fresh. I sometinmes find that if an artist has a real distinctive voice, that all the songs can be taken over by the singing style and almost make them sound the same.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE & LEAST FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING IN FILTHY DUKES? “Getting to make music, have it released for the world to listen to and then perform it is a dream come true (is that 3 things? sorry!). Least favorite; Long journeys and travelodges. ”
SO WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2009 & BEYOND? “FESTIVALS, FESTIVALS and more FESTIVALS. Lots of remixes for Bloc Party, White Lies, The Enemy, Hockey, Lady Ga Ga, Vagabond, The Temper Trap and The Rakes. Hopefully starting on some new material soon too.” ARE THERE ANY NEW BANDS THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE? ANYONE WE SHOULD BE WATCHING? “Plugs and We Have Band. We're releasing singles on our Kill Em All label. Check them out.” The Gig Guide 5: FAVOURITE BAR SNACK? “Pork Scratchings (not the hairy ones though) with a Kentish Ale.” WHAT’S THE BIGGEST ANIMAL YOU COULD TAKE ON IN UNARMED COMBAT? “A badger would be too scary so something a bit smaller than that. My mate got attacked by a squirral once but he was unscathed. Something inbetween a squirral and a badger... a big rabbit.” WHAT WOULD BE YOUR MESSAGE TO THE WORLD? “Buy our album, put it on, turn up loud and enjoy!” WHAT’S YOUR PET HATE? “Haters. (Concentrate on what you love)” TEA OR COFFEE? “Tea, white, one sugar.”

Feature: Lupen Crook BY JO LAWFORD jo@jeemo.co.uk
L
upen Crook is a British singer-songwriter and musician who has been part of the underground folk scene since 2004. The first official release of Crook’s career was the ‘Petals Fresh From Roadkill’ EP. He followed this with ‘Halloween and Love 80’. After meeting Tom and Bob Langridge he decided to record the album ‘Accidents Occur Whilst Sleeping’ which was released on June 24, 2006 gaining critical acclaim from NME and The Fly. This was the start of Lupen Crook and the Murderbirds and for the second album; ‘Iscariot the Ladder’, Chris Austin and The Shofar Horns were briefly featured in line up. With performances packed full of insane lyrics and quirky guitar tunes the guys offer a slightly dirty take on modern folk music and their bold, dark performances will take you away from your normal, functional life. They have been described as “Indie folk heroes” by The Sun, “Utterly compelling” by NME and “Indisputable genius, sublime stuff” by The Fly. Read on for an insight in to the mind of Mr Crook..
WHAT IS YOUR FULL NAME, AGE AND OCCUPATION? “Names, Date’s and Places aren’t exactly a strong point of mine. Let’s stick with Lupen Crook.”
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS “A Massive **** (Bob Murderbird often says so)”
DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC CAREER IN ONE SENTANCE “A succession of curious and improbable disasters available on CD, Vinyl and Download – otherwise come see the shows in September!”
p16 | The Gig Guide | June - July
WHEN DID YOUR CAREER START? “Well, I’ve been writing, drawing and playing music since I was a child. Today, I am still doing that. In 2005 I released my first EP ‘Petals fresh from Road Kill’, so for arguments sake you could call that the start. To be fair, I’ve never been a unit shifter so some would argue that my career has not actually start ed at all. I only know that I have always been doing this ever since I can remember.” SO WHERE DID YOU GET THE NAME FROM? “Simply the sound of the two words together - Lupen Crook – it defined the unattainable fantasy I was searching for at the time.”
WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE MURDERBIRDS? “I didn’t join the Murderbirds. The Murderbirds are an extension of Lupen Crook and the songs. It was something that evolved over time during the recording of the first album ‘accidents occur whilst sleeping’, and after meeting with the good brothers, Bob and Tom Langridge, The Murderbirds materialized as an actual band.”
WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? “The UK tour in 2007 for ‘Iscariot the Ladder’ was a complete disgrace, utter ****ing chaos. It didn’t do us any favours in the long term, we made a bad reputation for ourselves along the way but for those few weeks we were untouchable punk rockers, who with little in the way of resources, mostly frozen to the bone and filthy right through, built the foundations of a brotherhood that stand stronger than ever today. It has seen us through some really hard times. It’s been 4 years now, and there have been many rites of passage, but without that particular episode we wouldn’t be the band we are today.”
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? “Everything. Anything. Early Walt Disney. The spirit that is Punk Rock, the smell of sex and the sound of stray sods singing out from The Medway Towns.” HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON ANY NEW MATERIAL? “Yeah, ever since going to New York, and throughout 2008 we have been writing and playing out new material. We’ve been really working hard to find the heart and soul of the music, and what we stand for as a band.”
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR LYRICS? “My head is kinda weird. I don’t exactly know. I’m just following an age old tradition that is trying my best to observe, experience and then communicate feelings and thoughts and hopefully do so in such a way that is original and interesting. Most importantly I need to satisfy my own sick little traditions, my imagination, its fantasies and all those fruits that appear forbidden.”
June - July | The Gig Guide | p17
Feature: Lupen Crook I HEAR YOU WENT OFF TO THE BIG APPLE TO PERFORM LAST YEAR, WHO WAS THAT FOR AND HOW DID THEY HEAR OF YOU? “A few years back a young girl, Chicago born Katie Camosy, was filming a documentary on British anti-folk in London. She went back to live in New York and last year she got back in contact with me. After the ‘Iscariot Tour’ we needed to get the **** away, so she got us in touch with all the right people, and whereas in England ‘eccentric’ and ‘uncompromising’ seemed to be descriptions that were detrimental to a bands success, over there, they really understood what we were doing. We stripped the band back to its acoustic beginnings and went out. It was ****ing brilliant, a new beginning for us. We met our fourth Murderbird Craig Harff whilst out there, who has since been back to the UK to record and write with us.”
DIDN’T YOU ALSO END UP ON TV OVER THERE? “Yeah; Katie Camosy again. It was a TV show called ZOOM-IN. Very surreal and unexpected.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST GIG ? YOU HAVE PLAYED SO FAR “I guess the festival crowds are the largest. But venues like 93 Feet East in Brick Lane are great, the I perfect size. Other than that, supported J-Spaceman at on. Queens Festival Hall in Lond That was pretty huge.”
WHAT’S THE BEST VENUE YOU’VE PLAYED SO FAR? “So many, it’s hard to say. The Cellars in Portsmouth is a great gig and I’d recommend bands to get down there asap . The Windmill in Brixton is prett y cool. 93 Feet East in Brick Lane , and so many more I can’t remember off the top of my head.”
p18 | The Gig Guide | June - July
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LUPEN CROOK AND THE MURDERBIRDS? “We are not represented by anyone so, having recorded the new record at Ranscombe Studio’s with Jim Riley, we are preparing for its release and a tour in September/ October. A book I’ve written, that I am currently editing with my friend Cale Wolf, will coincide with the album’s release. Meanwhile, Stewart Hardy, a guy we’ve met through our gigs has been sorting out a website. We’re gonna do some crazy photos with Jenny Hardcore in May, and maybe a video of some sort. As well as this, Lucy Langridge has been making some fine pieces of jewellery from designs that are central to the themes on the record and things like t-shirt designs and videos are being put together by Tom and myself. Basically a few months of chaos, but hopefully it will come together.”
TELL ME ABOUT THE MEDWAY NON LEAGUE EXTREME MOVEMENT YOU’VE SET UP. WHAT’S IT FOR AND WHAT DO YOU AIM TO DO WITH IT? “Myself and Driver (Burn Paper Tigers) have been putting on gigs at a great little venue in Chatham called Poco Loco. Our plan is to generate enough cash and then put out a 12inch vinyl of the bands who are playing around these parts, sort of a documentation of what’s going on. Besides that it is just an idea. I like the sound of it. Who knows what it will become.” FAVOURITE BAND? “I like ‘Elvis’ and ‘At The Drive In’ this week. Last week it was ‘Patti Smith’ and ‘MGMT’.”
ANY FAVOURITE LOCAL BANDS? “Yeah. ‘The Flowing’ are this rustic, torn-up, dirty little three piece of two acoustic guitars and an acoustic bass. A country blues sorta thing, but very punk, if only in spirit. The songs are great and they have that heart and soul in what they do type feel, which I consider essential.”
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE KENT MUSIC SCENE? “It’s getting there. Lounge on the Farm is a marvellous festival. I’m full support of everything those guys do. Generally more gigs are needed, which doesn’t necessarily mean more promoters, just that bands need to get together and communicate with one and other. There’s always been so much bubbling under the surface, sometimes these things need to join forces and rise up together.”
WHO WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO BE STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND WITH? “It wouldn’t bother me who was there. If I didn’t like them, I would eat them.”
ART OR WORDS? “They are all as one to me.”
IF YOU LIVED YOUR LIFE BY A PHILOSOPHY WHAT WOULD IT BE? “I do live my life by a whole host of philosophies, but mainly I believe that an opinion is nothing if it is not based upon actual experience. Mistakes and misfortune are things that are crucial to experience and without them we wouldn’t know about anything at all.”

Feature: Live and Unsigned
Local band in final of national competition!
F
ast rising newcomers The Flack, have made it through to the final of an esteemed national music competition for unsigned bands! Still relatively new on the scene, the band have been hard at work gigging regularly, and making headway in the ‘Live and Unsigned’ competition since featuring in our news pages of Issue 7. Live and Unsigned is a national music competition for unsigned bands, vocal groups and solo artists to perform live. For it’s first year in 2007, the competition was featured and broadcast on ITV television. Now, in 2009 the competition is running well and attracting large numbers of talented musicians who are hungry for a chance to progress further in the industry. It is the biggest music talent search for
original singers and acts to perform live in the UK. The competition’s unique format allows the UK's break through acts to perform in their own genre and style and the aim is to find potential recording artists. From 10,000 entrants, The Flack are now one of only sixteen in the final round with a good chance of winning the competition! They must now travel to Portsmouth on 27th June to take part in the final where they will be once again be performing one of their own songs and a cover in their own unique style. If you can make it to the Portsmouth, The Flack would appreciate your support to make the event one hell of a day to remember!

The Positive Effect Of Music BY ABBY KEDWELL musicaturfingertips@yahoo.co.uk
I
was speaking to a very knowledgeable source regarding music and its positive effects and I thought I’d share! Having written about up and coming bands, interviewed fantastic people and also put across peoples thoughts regarding music within the Kent area, I thought id write something different. Music has a huge impact on the way people feel and even behave sometimes. Quite often I catch an earful of a great song on the radio that reminds me of a fab night out and I find myself feeling so much better. Music seems to bring back energising moments that can change your mood in seconds. Obviously this can work the other way too, listening to a sad song that you just couldn’t get out of your head when your relationship ended or a song that reminds you of loved ones lost then it can make you feel emotionally overwhelmed. Music has the ability to change your mood in both directions. I like the idea that Music is in fact a therapy for some people. Studies have shown that people who listen to music throughout an average day are more likely to be happier people. They aren’t fighting with their emotions as they are constantly in touch with them. Don’t mean to sound arty farty but isn’t it a refreshing thought that music is an emotional charger? Listen to something that makes you want to move your booty and you could be on your way to a happier, more positive day. Music influences so much in life, some people use music as an outlet. Producing music can have the same effect as listening to it. A finished piece of music can move mountains. Musicians use music to tell their audience what they are feeling at the time, it’s a therapy session for both parties without even realising it. I constantly think how many people are going through what this certain artist is singing about. We must be able to relate with at least 90% of what we hear, I find that I can relate to it even if I haven’t
experienced it. Music is made sometimes solely to set and maintain certain moods, we all know the doctors music that drives us up the wall or the repetitive on going music of theme rides or ice cream vans. These types of music are there to set a tone and keep people coming back. Movies use music to set scenes and intensify our already fluttering emotions, eerie music for that jumpy film that we love to hate. A more calming realisation for me is that music can help sooth the beast within (if you catch my drift). I was diagnosed with Bipolar type 2 disorder a few months back. It is basically an illness which makes your moods either, very high or depressingly low, more than usual. More and more people are being diagnosed everyday as they are starting to believe that they aren’t crazy and are seeking help. Music for me has slightly altered my perception of this illness as when I listen to a piece of inspiring music my moods lift and for me that is a huge deal. It makes the rest of the week so much easier to deal with than if I was too just ride the lows. The comforting thing about this mental illness is that most people who have it are VERY creative, including many comedians, singers, actors and musicians. Some of the greatest minds in history showed signs of it. We are not mad, merely talented. So music is the next best thing to popping a happy pill, it hits the spot immediately and when used at low points can change your negative mood into a positive one. I, the music doctor think that everyone should use this article to dig out that old CD that you have wanted to listen to for ages that makes you feel alive, put it on and dance around like a madman until you either fall over with exhaustion or you laugh so much you can’t go on. Music sparks imagination, positive feelings and it also brings back fond and not so fond memories that can alter your mood. Music is a pretty powerful thing, don’t you think?

Profile: Renegade Rehersals What's Renegade all about?
In the near future you'll no doubt spot posters and banners as Renegade will be regularly appearing at live venues all over the South East. Starting in Folkestone on 30th May, Renegade bands Ember and The Tricks will play alongside The Flack at The Quarterhouse. At the same venue on 20th June Renegade's C.M.E.'s will play their long-awaited 1st live appearance. Renegade shows will be streamed live up onto the renegaderehearsals.com website. We will be filming interviews with the bands, staff and members of the audience - so when you get home you can check yourself out on the site and add comments about the evening! Renegade also work in conjunction with ‘D.O.C. Management’ and ‘D.O.C. Roc Records’, also having recent meetings with Channel 4 and Sky Television with regard to a half-hour music programme presenting some of the best unsigned bands. The Managing Director of The Prodigy's Cooking Vinyl label has also commented; "It's a very cool site and a fresh and interesting way of presenting bands".
Comments from Renegade's Managing Director;
"I get so frustrated when I hear some of the rubbish that's on the radio. With the exception of a few bands, most of what's out there at the moment is substandard. That's why it's possible for so many bands to reform and go back on tour - because there's a great big hole in the market! Where's the next Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd/Genesis going to come from? Not from the throwaway bubblegum bands that the major labels are producing at the moment, that's for sure." “The criteria for getting signed to a major label seems to be: your band members have to all be about 15; it doesn't matter if you can't play live as they can fix that in the studio; you have to look trendy and preferably come from private education. The criteria for Renegade is: it doesn't matter how old you are, just have good songs and be able to kick them out live. That's about it!”
How can I appear on Renegade?
If you're in a band you can book a session at riversidestudio.co.uk, and if you've got what it takes you can play at the live events. We are all about finding and showcasing the best unsigned bands in the UK. Bands can send demos to; Riverside Studio, Unit 7 Riverside Farm West Hythe, CT21 4NT.
renegaderehearsals.com; the underground site where the public decide what they like, not the industry.

Peter Cushing Lives in Whitstable BY ANDY CAPON
Q.I
host Steven Fry's comment upon hearing Alan Davies rendition of 'Peter Cushing Lives in Whistable', was good advice for songwriters “This is the first rule of pop music – write about what you know, what you Peter Cushing would be see out of the window”. proud. The song was referenced on Q.I after Davies reminisecd about his student days in Whitstable. He told of a local band called The Jellybottys, and their now famous song, and sang the following.... “Peter Cushing Lives in Whitstable I have seen him ride his bicycle I have seen him buying vegetables....” Within weeks, a video appeared on You Tube showing animated versions of Davies, Phil Jupitus , Bill Bailey and Steven Fry pursuing Peter Cushing's bike through Whitstable, and has so far received over 18,000 hits. It also was added to the Q.I Series C Dvd and the song soon became a cult hit and instantly made legends of The Jellybottys. Despite their unlikely passage to stardom, the band still like to keep a low profile and rarely give interviews, but took time out from recording to talk to the Gig Guide... “We're working on a new song 'Hector McGaskell Mackenzie', a Scottish chant about a guy who owes our lead singer money”, Drummer Jelly Jim told us “Most of our songs are about Jellyfish, some are just about Jelly. We love the stuff.... but we felt we had a serious message to get across in this song, especially in a recession”. Hector McGaskell MacKenzie is, it seems, as elusive and the band themselves, and lead singer Deekstar Jellicious simply told us, “Our message is in our music”. Bass player Louiggi Bottijelly was more forthcoming and told us; “We formed in 1985. We used to meet around Deekstar's flat, with a few Guitars and a p42 | The Gig Guide | June - July
pair of Bongos. Our first gig was at the Labour club in Whitstable, and that's where Alan Davies saw us. It was also the same venue where he actually played his first comedy gig”. “Our set was bit of mish-mash of underrehearsed songs, including Jelly For A Day, Sting me not Jelly Jim and Giro on the deck, but it was when we played Peter Cushing that the crowd went wild...we actually played it twice and that's why it may've stuck in Davies' memory....it's a true folk song in every sense, because people were singing it who never even went to the Gig”. After the song was recited on Q.I., Peter Cushing... went global – with videos appearing on You Tube of people singing it in Kuala Lumpar, America and Australia. Justin Gaynor, an artistic director with the BBC contacted the Jellybottys requesting permission to use the song as part of a new Q.I. DVD. “We sent them a new version, which they preferred to the original and it was added to the DVD as a bonus feature”, Jelly Jim told us. As well as recording a new single, The Jellibottys are planning a surprise gig in Whitstable “probably on the beach....outside Peter Cushing's old house!”. Anyone keen to see the video of Peter Cushing Lives In Whitstable can find it on You Tube, you can also download the original and new versions at www.jellybottys.com

Music Reviews The Gig Guide takes a look at some CD’s from Kent bands... Band: Dudley Ross Title: The Note That Told A Thousand Tales Format: Album (11 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
From the opener ('As I Am'), you can tell many things... the song writing is of excellent standard, the production values are high, and that Dudley Ross is a talented guitarist. What you can't tell is that what lies before you is a very varied collection of songs and it is nigh on impossible to clasify 'A Thousand Tales' into a genre, but rather describe it as an expression of Dudley's abilities. For this reason though, I can see the album struggling to find it's way into the publics most listened to lists. With the styles differing so much, very few will appreciate the full album format, and are more likely to cherry-pick only a couple of tracks each listen. It would have been better for Dudley to release separate albums, distilling his playing styles into similar sounds that would individually approach a wider audience. Gig Guide favourites are feel good 'As I Am', the deep thinking title track & 'CT', which is one of the most unique tracks on the album. Whilst it serves as an impeccable CV for Dudley (and that is something he should be proud of), it's viability as a album is flawed.
Band: Springtide Cavalry Title: Springtide Cavalry Format: Mini-Album (7 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
This long awaited mini-album from Springtide Cavalry (STC) is finally upon us and now that it's here, it certainly hasn't dissapointed. Whilst there are only 6 tracks, each and every one has been carefully chosen and is a powerful song in it's own right without adding unneccesary 'fillers'. STC have managed to produce music that is very appealing to a wide ranging audience and is instantly accessible... a feat that is not easy to achieve in today's instant and throwaway society. But even harder is to keep those listeners interested, and STC have managed to produce very memorable music that will serve the test of time. Our favourite track is 'Lose My Mind' which features the hauntingly, almost falsetto voice of Sean Hardy (Bass) joining Kevin on vocal duties. We're eager to see more from this talented Mod trio and confident that the lads will be going far. It will be interesting to see if Sean's alternative take on vocals will feature more prominently in any of the future recordings.
Band: Venture South Title: Breath Of Fresh Air Format: EP (6 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Like The Blues Brothers for the 21st century, Venture South deliver their own version of funked up, blues-infused rock 'n' roll with this EP, and it certainly is a breath of fresh air. No matter if it's kicking and screaming, you can't help but be dragged in by the fast paced rock n roll riffs and the funky feel keeps it fresh. I haven't yet had the opportunity to see Venture South play live, but I can imagine it being quite a show to behold! Favourites on the Ep would have to be 'Couldn't Stand The Weather' & 'Blues For The Blues', both of which have a strong blues feel. If you're after something a bit different from the normal, or like the idea of something brought up to date with a fresh twist, I highly recommend you try this EP. You wont be dissapointed.
