We’ve got interviews galore this issue as we speak to Frankee Connolly from new duo Mini Viva, frontman Roy Stride from pop favourites Scouting For Girls, local boy Ben Jones (of The Lovedays) and funnywomen Katy Brand and Laura Solon! Also this issue we’ve got profiles on Kent bands, the latest news about the summers hottest festivals and a review of possibly the most important piece of equipment any musician (or even live music attendee) should posess; a set of custom made earplugs to protect your hearing. I hope you enjoy the read and get the chance to get out and see some of Kent’s fantastic local bands. I recently checked out the ‘Kentish Kreme 2’ showcase at the Gulbenkian Theatre, as well as the DOGS gig at Quarterhouse. These were two great nights out with the Quarterhouse in particular seeing a very large turn out!

Interview: Laura Solon
Laura Solon BY STUART KEELER Following on from our competition last issue (congratulations to Paul Cummins from Folkestone), we decided to quiz the freshfaced female comic with some of our questions, to find out her opinions on the life around her... Is it true that you were due to perform as a double act for your show in 2005, but your partner pulled out three weeks beforehand leaving you to go it alone? How did that feel? “He pulled out a few months before because he had work he couldn’t turn down. As we’d only got together to do that Edinburgh show, we didn’t have it written yet, and I had been doing several characters on the circuit so it wasn’t a major panic.” Did you always believe in yourself and your comedy; thinking you’d stand a chance of winning the Perrier Award or did it come as a complete shock? “I just went up there to do my show - I was a relative unknown so I didn’t think about any awards so yes it was a huge surprise to win but it therefore opened a lot of doors for me so I am very happy about it. Awards are happy things to win but any voted by a panel are always highly subjective so there’s an element of luck if you win one. If there had been different panelists they might have voted for someone else.” Since then you’ve had success with your Radio 4 show; ‘Laura Solon; Talking and Not Talking’, currently in it’s third series. Do you enjoy Radio work where the audience cannot see but only hear you? “Yes - it means you have to focus purely on the writing which I enjoy but at the

same time the fact you don’t need sets or costume means you can set something anywhere on Radio. Like space. Or inside a whale. But on TV these days they’d tell you that was too expensive.” You’ve appeared in the TV shows ‘Ruddy Hell! It’s Harry and Paul’ and more recently; ‘Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder’. What was it like working alongside these guys? “They are all very talented, successful and also very lovely gentlemen so it was a pleasure to learn from them as well as spend time in their company.”
“You can set something anywhere on Radio. Like space. Or inside a whale. ” Which comedians do you personally find funny at the moment? “I think Shappi Khorsandi is brilliant, Kristen Schaal is also very funny, Jason Manford, Sean Lock, Bill Bailey - there’s a lot of great comics around.” Are you interested in writing (and maybe starring in) your own TV show? Is this something you are working towards? “Yes I am interested in that. Very interested. I am developing two ideas but it’s very early days on both.”
Tell us a bit about your latest live show; ‘Rabbit Faced Story Soup’? Why that title? “The show is me playing about ten different comedy characters to tell one story. And a lot of characters have written different stories - so hence the ‘soup’ and rabbit faced because I wanted a rabbit in the poster. Then the rabbit got a part in the show. It had never done any acting before but it has a natural talent.” Is it tough to play all the characters in the show, particularly without the visual aid of costume changes? “No it’s easier than having to run off stage and scramble a costume change in 20 seconds. And any good costume is going to take longer than that to put on so I initiated a no costume rule as part of my comedy dogma.” What are your plans for the immediate future, after you’ve finished touring the current show? “Write another one and go to America for 3 weeks to do my show which will be amazing.”
The Gig Guide 6 Favourite Bar Snack? “Crisps. Always and forever.” Myspace, Twitter or Facebook? “To be honest, I don’t really like any of them. Facebook is the only one I’ve managed so far.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “Good question. For an easy fight it would be a cat or a small dog. But if I’d been in training, probably a cow. Because whilst large, they appear slow and cowardly.” What would be your message to the world? “Can I borrow some money to buy a new car please.” Got any pet hates? “People shouting in the street, crap RnB, white jeans.” Tea or Coffee? “Both are essential in my daily routine.”

Review: Jazz for Haiti at RAFA Club, Chatham fantastic effort, great value at a tenner, but a veritable nightmare to get down on paper. Thankfully the easy names to spell and remember included Mark Nightingale, trombonist and winner of the 2009 British Jazz Awards and the much-acclaimed Alan Barnes on baritone sax. Highly accomplished musician and raconteur Pete Long, whose southern drawl was very reminiscent of Jules Holland, was an excellent host.
BY MICHAEL LAKE have to confess (again) that this was my second attempt to check out the RAFA Club. My first attempt was tortuous and involved an hour driving up and down Dock Road trying to find the place. My misery was ended with a trip through the tunnel, at which point I called it a night.
I
Out of desperation to find anything positive to say about Chatham, I googled it only to discover that among its notable migrant residents was Tracy Emin. The world renowned artist actually went to Medway College of Design and cites her stint of living by the River Medway as the most important influence of her life. Nurturists will tell you that the environment plays a significant part in your mental health and influences behaviour. Kind of explains a fair bit. Sorry Chatham I know you have naval history, a dockyard and a designer outlet but man alive did someone forget to make the bed? At first sight the RAFA Club looks like a shack, battered by high winds and hanging on for grim death. At second sight you realise that it actually is a shack which architecturally blends in with the surroundings quite well. It is typical of many jazz clubs though, earthy, no frills, and thrives and survives on enthusiasm. For three years however the RAFA club run by Shirley S and Colin E has played host to some top quality jazz and tonight was no exception. The gig was billed as a charity fundraiser for Haiti and was packed to the rickety rafters. I lost count of the number of musicians who graced the stage, over twenty I reckon, which was a

I have to say that I haven’t enjoyed a night of jazz as much as this for sometime. The first set was a mix of latin, bebop and classic jazz standards. Horace Silvers Nica’s dream was a particular highlight with some effortless trumpet soloing by Steve Fishwick who looks way too young to be out after dark never mind playing brilliant jazz. Alex Garnet on tenor sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet, Sue Rivers on vocals and the superb Nick Peck on keyboards all played their part in a cracking 45 minutes of music. The second set was arguably even better opening with a toe tapping version of Gillespie’s “Anthropology” featuring Pete Long and Simon Bates duelling it out on clarinet plus Alex Dankworth on bass and Andrea Vickery on keyboards. Georgina from Wigan added a touch of northern vocal class on “The very thought of you” and Paul Cheneouer infused some jazz fusion in his all blues flute solo. Luckily for me he had a card. All in all well worth the pre and post gig torture. The evening raised a tremendous £1761. The RAFA club holds gigs on a monthly basis. Interview: Mini Viva
BY STUART KEELER urrently taking the nation by storm are new pop duo Mini Viva. Comprising of Frankee Connolly (19) and Britt Love (21), they are the result of the latest output from pop production superhouse Xenomania who, based in Kent are responsible for a plethora of top ten hits including songs by Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Alesha Dixon, Gabriella Cilmi and many more.
C
Coming from relative obscurity, the girls were picked by A&R talent scouts to form a new group, and after 2 years of writing and recording material, they are almost ready to release their debut album.
Described as ‘pop with a quirky edge’, Mini Viva have already had top ten success with their debut single ‘I Left My Heart In Tokyo’, which dominated UK radio in September of last year with it’s unmistakably catchy chorus line. They are now in the middle of their UK tour, in support of Britain’s Got Talent winners; Diversity, which brings them to Margate’s Winter Gardens on 27th April. I spoke to Frankee from the band to find out a bit more information about how they met, their future plans and just what it’s like working for Xenomania...
April - May | The Gig Guide | 13
Interview: Mini Viva The first single ‘Left My Heart In Tokyo’ did very well, charting at number 7. Did you know it’d be so catchy from the start? “Obviously the success was a big surprise but when we first heard it we knew it’d be one of those feel good songs that everyone would want to sing. We knew people would love it but you don’t know what’s gonna happen these days. We weren’t going to put in our heads that it’d go to number 1 and stuff but we were so happy it got to number 7 and got a top ten.” So have you ever been to Tokyo? “No we haven’t! [laughs], we always feel dead stupid when people ask us that! We’d love to go to Tokyo and we’ve had record labels come see us from Japan and they say we need to release it there as they will love it. So hopefully we’ll get to go out there and promote it soon.” How did you guys meet? “We met in 2007 when we both got scouted separately by A&R people at Xenomania, who brought us down to Kent (where they are based) and started recording. They found our voices very separately distinctive but thought they’d work really well together. At the time we were going to be a five piece girl band but it didn’t work out and it ended up being just us two. So they thought let’s do a duo instead ‘cos there’s nothing like that out there at the minute.” Do you feel a bit of pressure working for Xenomania? “Yeah, there’s always that little bit of pressure because they’re well known for the Girls Aloud stuff and it’s always in the top ten. We just wanna have the same success if you know what I mean. We just wanna do well for them and we want people to love ‘em [the songs] as much as they love Girls Aloud songs.”
14 | The Gig Guide | April - May
Where did the name ‘Mini Viva’ come from? “It’s little nicknames we had for each other… Britt’s Mini, I’m Viva. When you’re looking for a name, you go through loads and in the end we just thought ‘this band is about us so let’s use a name that means something’ so we put them together and it worked!”
whoever asks them. We also have camera footage of what we’ve been up to during the week and fans can request to see stuff, so for example if someone asks ‘while on tour, will
You’re just about to start your tour supporting Diversity, are you looking forward to that? “Can’t wait! That’s the best part of being in this job; getting out on stage in all these different places and letting people know who you are. It’s gonna be different for us ‘cos we’ve never supported a dance group so it’s really exciting. We hope they can show us some moves!” Have you got any festival appearances planned for the summer? “Yeah, we’ve just been confirmed for the Isle of Wight on 11th June. We’d love to play V festival so hopefully we’ll do that.” You’re just about to start your new Interactive Webcast; ‘Viva Mini Viva’. Will you be nervous doing that? “A little bit! The thing is me and Britt when we’re on camera just laugh and always mess up and stuff so it’s gonna be fun, and it’s great for the fans to interact with us. It’s really important for us to get to know our fans ‘cos at the end of the day they are the ones that make us successful and buy our music so we just want to be so friendly to them and let them know we love them.” What can we expect to see on your webcasts? “You can log in and send us messages and ask us questions and we’ll be chatting live back to
you get someone from diversity to show you this move, we wanna see how you can do it and if you can do it well’ so we’ll be like ‘ok lets film it and post it to them’. It’s gonna be really fun, sort of like a TV show but online.”
So what’s the album going to sound like when it comes out? Any surprises on there? “Well I think people will be surprised by the whole album because every song is so different and that was a theme we wanted to work throughout, because we don’t wanna just have one sound, we want to have a few sounds so all different people from all music backgrounds can like us.” I must say, we are in awe of your hair… does it take a long time to get it that big? “Do you know what, it takes me like 10 minutes… it’s not even that long! Some people with short hair spend ages on it but it’s really easy. People think ‘oh my god you sit there curling it all day’ and I’m like ‘no I just wash it, put some products on it and dry it!’” And when Britt has her quiff, do you compete? “Oh yeah.. it’s all about the hair competition!” Where would you like to see yourself at the end of the year? “Obviously we’d love to have another success with the next single that comes out, which is going to be ‘One Touch’, out in May. We’d love to have the album out but we’re gonna have four singles out before the album. We’d love to have a successful album because that’s what we’ve been working on for 2 years now and we’ve put
so much hard work into it and to see it be successful would be amazing.” You get likened to the 80’s duo Mel & Kim occasionally, what are your thoughts on this? “It’s great to be compared to them as they were really good, but at the same time we think ‘well we are not the same as them just cos we’re a duo, so don’t compare us to them’. I mean it’s a nice thing to be compared to but we want to let people know we’re really different. They were sisters and dressed the same whereas me and Britt are friends who didn’t really know each other but are now really close. We’ve got our own individual selves going on and aren’t clones of each other!” What music do you like to listen to? “I’m a really big R’n’B girl, into Beyonce, Hip Hop, I love GB, Kayne West and I love my reggae music as my
background is Jamaican so I was brought up on that all my life, as well as a lot of soul and stuff like that.” (Gig Guide 6) Favourite Bar Snack? “I’d have to say a packet of crisps… Salt & Vinegar” Myspace, Twitter, Facebook? “I’d say Twitter ‘cos I don’t use Facebook or Myspace (other than for Mini Viva). I use twitter personally, I like twitter.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “God I don’t know. It wouldn’t be anything strong ‘cos I’m not that strong. I’d have to say like a little butterfly or something!” What would be your message to the world? “Always follow your dream ‘cos you never know what’s gonna happen.” Got any pet hates? “Nah, I love all animals.” Tea or Coffee? “Tea, definitely.”
You can catch up with the girls and ask them anything you like, every Friday at 4:30 pm via their interactive webcast show; ‘Viva Mini Viva’, found at miniviva.com With the new single ‘One Touch’ coming out in May, the debut album following later and worldwide promotion on the cards, 2010 looks like a promising year for the duo. We look forward to seeing more from them.

Review: ER15 Noise Reducing Earplugs entire ear using a plastic gun, the specialist then put a small plastic cover over the ear which stuck to the gooey gunk. I was told that I shouldn’t smile, talk or cough as this would ruin the impression. Once the gel-like solution had gone off, the plastic cover would just peel off. Then all that was left to do was pull the rubbery impression out with the cotton pull cord and repeat for the other ear.
BY JOE FENDT Do you play an instrument or regularly attend live gigs? If so you should seriously invest in some hearing protection! I recently had some ER15 custom ear plugs fitted by Hearbase in Folkestone and my only regret is that I hadn’t done it sooner. I only discovered Hearbase after some investigation on the internet following a cancellation due to the January snow fall. I’d previously made plans to travel to London to a hearing specialist that had been recommended to me, not knowing I could have this done locally all along. So thank you snow... I was saved from a long journey and the expense of travelling! After checking out Hearbase’s website and reading about their services, I decided to give them a call and find out more. The staff were very friendly and informative and within no time at all I had an appointment booked. (Hearbase offer a number of outlets across Kent and a full list of clinics is available online). On the day of fitting (which included a full consultation to decide what ear plugs would best suit me), we decided that the ER15 would be my best option. At first the specialist recommended that I should have the ER25 (25db filter) because I am a drummer and subject to constant very loud noise levels, but because I wanted to use the earplugs for general use including both playing drums and going to watch gigs, the ER15’s were chosen instead! Hearbase also offer an ER9 option that has a 9db filter. The fitting was a somewhat strange procedure; firstly a small sponge with a cotton pull chord was carefully inserted deep into my ear. Then a soft rubbery solution was pumped into the 16 | The Gig Guide | April - May
At the end of the appointment I was given a demonstration on how to insert them into my ear and how to care for the ear plugs. I was then given the choice whether to opt for another appointment to demonstrate fitting once they had arrived or for the plugs to be posted out to a chosen address. I decided to have them posted and they were delivered within 2 weeks. The first opportunity to use my new ER15’s was at a gig playing drums, it took a little while getting used to putting them in my ears but I soon found the knack! We did a sound check and everything seemed ok, although I struggled to hear the vocals in the monitors. As it happens this was not down to the ER15’s at all and was in fact the monitor mix at fault as the rest of the band were struggling as well. I’ve now played a second gig and I find them very comfortable. I’m getting the same tones and clarity but at a much lower level and have total confidence in using them. The only thing you have to get used to is that you can hear your own voice a lot louder and naturally compensate by speaking quieter. I was constantly being told to speak up! I’ve also tried the ER15’s watching a gig and can confirm they perform brilliantly. The sound quality was great and the vocals were clear; just the same as listening normally but at a much more comfortable level. Friends who had attended the same gig had come out saying their ears were ringing and the music was uncomfortably loud. This just proved to me how good the ER15’s are and what a great investment I had just made in my future hearing!

Interview: The Lovedays
THE LOVEDAYS
BY JO LAWFORD - jo@jeemo.co.uk
As I settled down to write my next article I thought to myself who would I have the best laugh with whilst interviewing? I couldn’t think of anyone so I decided to go with plan b, which was Ben Jones of The Lovedays. Just kidding Ben. This Medway/Maidstone band is made up of Dean Whale on lead guitar, Paul Moss on bass, Sam Jacques on drums and Ben Jones as the frontman on rhythm guitar and vocals. Watching the guys on stage is nothing short of mesmerising. With fantastic tunes and lively performances it’s no wonder they have played some fantastic venues, for instance in the last 12 months they have performed at the International Pop Overthrow Festival at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool and also saw the guys jetting off to New York in November. They have just completed their second album titled ‘House of Cards’ with the new line-up
and as usual it’s nothing short of brilliant. Just what you have come to expect from this band. Whilst doing all this Mr Jones was also busy producing The Soundcasters, Scott Brunger and Rich Clarks new album’s. Wow multi-tasking at its best. So it’s a wonder I have managed to steal Ben from his busy schedule for a cuppa to find out just how he keeps so many balls juggling. Describe yourself in 3 words. “Cantankerous, retro and modest.” Mr Jones tell me when did you first realise music was well and truly in your veins? “My Dad was a musician. He was 40 when I was born and was a proper child of the sixties. He used to play the folk club scene and shared a lot of bills with people like Roy Harper and Paul Simon, a lot of people who went on to be cult figures in the folk

Interview: The Lovedays scene so there was always a guitar around when I was growing up. When I got to about 12 Oasis came about and they made everyone wanna pick up a guitar so I suppose it was probably from this moment. Before that I wanted to be a writer of some kind plus I had always been into the Beatles and Bob Dylan from a young age.”
musical ability was fantastic and we liked a lot of the same things like The Beatles etc. so I decided I wanted to work with him again. So from there we started to go out and spend time together and we already knew Jason and asked him if he wanted to join and so the Lovedays were formed. That line-up lasted for a few years but as with all bands musical differences meant people left and then we came to the line-up we have now.” Describe the Lovedays sound? “Classic pop with a hint of blues and country.”
Do you have any weird rituals you carry out before you go on stage like maybe kissing a pic of Elvis or dancing around your guitar case 5 times? “I wish I could say I did. I might start. I might kiss a picture of Elvis whilst dancing around my guitar case. Whether it’s a small gig or a big gig I generally go off on my own about an hour before. I like to be kinda quiet before, not because of nerves but just want to get in to the right frame of mind. There was a famous reggae singer called Judge Dread who came off stage from one performance and died. I kinda find that sort of romantic as he died doing the thing he loved. He pretty much gave that last performance his all.” So when and how did the Lovedays come about? “I was in a couple of bands before, that I wasn’t the front man of but I wrote the songs for and everyone had said I was good enough to be a front man. At the same time I was living in London and was signed but things went sour and I grew tired of promises being made and people not keeping to their end of the bargain so I decided to move back to Kent. I had written some songs and wanted a vehicle for them to be performed. I knew Sam previously and had played with him a couple of times before and I always thought that his

I mentioned the IPO festival, how did you get the chance to perform? “The organiser David Bash is very well known within the American community of music rock critics and he does a lot of writing for Shindig magazine, he is a pop obsessive. He has a real love of music and if there were more people like him running the industry it would be fabulous. A couple of bands had suggested us so he found us on Myspace, decided he liked us and asked if we would play the Cavern Club in Liverpool and from that we played the IPO in New York. He does a top 100 of his favourite albums every year and he ranked us number 7 and believe it or not we came above Bruce Springsteen. So it was a real honour to play and I think we are doing three IPO’s this year, IPO Liverpool, IPO LA and IPO New York.”
“He ranked us number 7 and believe it or not we came above Bruce Springsteen.” Are there any funny stories you can reveal from backstage, maybe some special band bonding moments? “If we have got a long distance to travel we normally end up having these really deep conversations about things like hunger or a cure for Cancer. Sam will always come out with something odd like we were talking about Steven Hawking once being on The Simpsons and he said wasn’t he Superman. Bless him. We have had bust ups before gigs. I think because we all want to give it everything we have got that emotions run high and stuff.”
What have been the highlights so far? “We were made record of the week on the BBC Introducing Show once and had our album played 3 weeks in a row. Obviously New York was a massive highlight. I met Roy Wood and played him some of our album, he said it was great.” You have just finished your second album with the new line-up, when can we get a copy please? “It will be on sale from the 1st March on thelovedays.net, myspace which is myspace.com/benjonesandthelovedays, at gigs and in the not too distant future - itunes.” What musical influences are behind the Lovedays? “The Beachboys, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young not Will Young, The Doors. People who have tried to do something more than just another record.” Have you got any gossip about your band members you would like to reveal? And yes cross-dressing is allowed. “Dean is a gym addict, you can find him in the showers down at the local gym in Gillingham he spends a lot of time lathering up and he eats a lot of protein shakes in case his muscles eat themselves. Paul is a closet fan of Des O’Connor and Sam has the biggest collection of racing snails in the southeast. I like to collect books with pages missing especially the last page.” I particularly like your track “Devils advocate” what’s it about? “It’s not about anything really. Generally my songs are about the human condition, things people can relate to. I suppose if I had to say it would be about someone who you have put your faith in and they don’t put their
faith in you so you end up over compensating all the time.” If you could liken your sound to any other band who would it be? “A concoction of The Beatles, Beachboys and The Who.”
“Paul is a closet fan of Des O’Connor and Sam has the biggest collection of racing snails in the southeast.” What’s the biggest gig you have played so far? “New York was a big one and ‘Lounge on the Farm’.” What’s the best venue you have played? “Dirty South in Lewisham; that was a great venue, Water Rats and of course Live from the Fort. I have never played anywhere like that before or since.” Where would you most love to play? “The Borderline in London, its not the biggest venue but for me it has a certain resonance about it. Nirvana has played there, Ray Davis has played there and Neil Young did a gig there too. I like the idea of playing Theatres not like a camp show but something different. My big ambition is to get a huge Circus tent and travel around playing loads of bands from the area whilst there are Circus acts going on in the background, like fire eaters etc.” What does the future hold for you and the Lovedays? “I am running for President of the USA, no that’s a lie, its Prime Minister. No seriously, we are looking for a record or a distribution deal doing a few more IPO things and a few more London gigs. We are just trying to mainly get the Lovedays out there. For myself I would love to write a rock opera something like Tommy. I love to write so the idea of doing something like that really interests me.”
April - May | The Gig Guide | 19
Interview: The Lovedays What’s playing on your stereo at the minute? “An album by Brian Wilson called ‘that lucky old sun’, Bob Dylan with an album called ‘love and theft’ and ‘she and him volume 1’ by Zooey Deschanel she was in that movie with Jim Carrey, ‘Yes man’. I had a dream I was playing with Kasabian last night and when I started playing the crowd just walked off, now what would a psychologist say about that. Sorry I felt the need to share this!” If you could do a duet with someone (alive or dead) who would it be and where? The moon is included. “I have heard there are structures on the moon but NASA wont talk about it. No erm, I suppose I would love to play with Bob Dylan that would be brilliant or Billy Childish at either the Collosium or the Acropolis somewhere really mental.” Got any favourite local bands? “Billy Wears Dresses they are a brilliant band. I also like Len Price 3, The Soundcasters and the Archie Wah Wahs too.” What do you think of the Kent music scene? “I think it’s alright; it’s the same as anywhere else I suppose. I think the problem is that bands don’t really get a chance to play together. I have a lot of admiration for people like Phil and Lisa Dillon and David Wise, people who try and do things to bring everyone together. The funny thing is if you go to America all they want to talk about is the Medway scene. Do you know I was in New York in a record shop and they had a Medway section so it must be good to reach overseas.”
If you could be a superhero who would you be and what special powers would you have? “Batman, he gets to go out and jump around rooftops at night clearing up all the sh** but then I like the Joker too. He is an entertainer. And I would like to be able to see through girl’s clothes as my special power.” Which one of your band members has the best feet? “Me. I haven’t seen the other guy’s feet as we have a rule, which is never to get too intimate with the lights on.” Love or hate? “Love.” Good ol’ English Cox’s apples or passion fruit? “Apples.” Sainsbury’s or Tescos? “Sainsbury’s.” Action man or teddy bear? “Action man gripped onto a teddy bear.” Jeans or cords? “Jeans.” Monopoly or scrabble? “Scrabble.”
Got any advice for any aspiring bands just starting out? “None as I am not there yet.” If you lived your life by a philosophy what would it be? “As Viv the keyboard player from Spinal Tap says ‘have a good time all of the time’, no probably live long and die oblong and may your chickens never go blind and bump into each other.”

Relig Oran here’s a light in the forest, there’s a face in the tree… Up past the brow of the dark moor, chill of the evening air, on we press. We pass the wicker man, pass the creaking gibbet with its dark treasure, and on we press. Looking for the old ways from here to Summerisle. RELIG ORAN are the soundtrack to our journey. Nick Drake meets the brothers Grimm, Cinderella meets Tom Waits. The hobby horse and the hand of glory. Folk’s dark underbelly, tales of murder and betrayal, of death and rebirth, and tunes, hollow, haunting tunes. Now the caravan drives East through the Bohemian forests, in search of Baba Yagga as night draws in. There’s a light in the forest, there’s a face in the tree… and on we press……
T
Relig Oran are; Andy Renshaw (Kalimba, Bodhran, Whistles, Percussion), Martyn Kember (Fiddle), and Jem Scott (Vocals, Guitar, Bouzouki, Fiddle). Pronounced ‘Relig’ (as in relic but with a ‘g’) ‘Oran’, they have an interesting story behind the name...
Off the west coast of Scotland lies the beautiful island of Iona, on which is an ancient burial ground containing the graves of the old high kings of Scotland, Ireland and Norway, along with the odd monk or two including Oran. It’s from here that the band gets its name – it means ‘Burial place of Oran’. So the story goes that St Columbus decided one day he should know for certain that heaven was better than hell and asked for a volunteer to be buried and so visit said places. The monk Oran boldly stepped forward and was promptly buried and journeyed first to heaven then to hell. A while later Oran was exhumed to file his report. Well, you can imagine every ones shock and horror. Firstly not only was heaven really not that great but hell was fantastic, a corker of a place. So as promptly as he was exhumed, so he was buried again, never to be unearthed, for fear he should tell the world of his findings. I guess we just like the story. They take the traditional music of England, Ireland, Brittany plus Eastern Europe and mix it with the exotic sounds of the African Kalimba, driving percussion, fiddles and bouzouki’s to produce a heady mix of flavours and rhythms. Using innovative and dynamic arrangements they give the music a contemporary and exciting twist, at the same time keeping the spirit and depth of the tradition. Between them, the band members have toured France, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium and Denmark, plus festivals throughout the country. They have also achieved radio and television play from Russia to Japan. Recent very exciting news for the band is the inclusion of their track ‘Ye Mariners All’ on the nationally released compilation ‘John Barleycorn Reborn’. Released on the Cold Spring Label at the end of March; it is a collection of up and coming, on the edge folk and not so folk. You can find our review of their live EP later in this edition. www.religoran.co.uk/band.htm Photos courtesy of Dylan Woolf

SCOUTING
Interview: Scouting For Girls
BY STUART KEELER fter breaking onto the scene in 2008, Scouting For Girls have done rather well for themselves becoming the biggest selling new British band of the year. Their songs are now instantly recognisable and have a unique appeal to a wide ranging audience.
A
Now, after taking some time out to (re)write new material they are back with a brilliant new single and a new album promising to be bigger and better than their debut. We caught up with frontman Roy Stride for a quick catch up... How are you guys? “We’re very good thanks and so excited to be back!” You’ve got the new album coming out, what can we expect on it…any surprises? “I’m so proud of this album. We took our time to do it justice and tried to put together 10 songs that could all be singles, but work together as an album. The songs are bigger and better than anything we’ve done… I think it will surprise people, by how good it is!”
22 | The Gig Guide | April - May
When you were planning the album, you scrapped your initial recordings believing they weren’t good enough, was that a hard decision to make and did you remain confident to try again or did it leave you a bit depressed? “The initial demos were rejected by our record company as they didn’t think we had enough singles. This actually really inspired us to work harder than ever to write the perfect pop song, in order to show them what we could do! We actually went off and wrote some of the best songs we’ve ever done. We later found out that the Record Company actually really liked the original demos but that the recording studio wasn’t available till later in the year! So this album is an amalgamation of all the best songs from the past two years… It’s a belter!” So will those old songs ever see the light of day? “There is so much music out there that I don’t think there’s any point in putting out anything that isn’t exceptional. I think it’s an insult to your audience. Maybe one day when its all over we’ll release the complete demos. I must have hundreds…”
FOR GIRLS
Are there any new musical styles this time around? “I think the song writing has got better, and the record sounds fuller. We spent twice as long on this album layering the sound. It’s a much bigger, lusher record whilst keeping the pop sensibilities.”
What’s the funniest story you can tell us about life on tour? “There are so many. I’m going to write a book when I’m older… err... how about the time I walked off the wrong side of stage? It was so dark I walked straight into a wall!”
How about odes to female TV presenters? Can we expect anything along those lines?! “Not this time. Although there is song about James Dean, a song about Posh Girls and the answer to how 1+1=3.”
(Gig Guide 6) Favourite Bar Snack? “Scampi Fries.”
What would you say are your influences, both in music and in life? “The Beatles, Brian Wilson, REM, Oasis, Blur, Stone Roses, Madness, Coldplay, Smiths, Dave Grohl, David Hasselhoff, Andrew O’Neil, Michaela Strachen, Phil Collins.” Can we expect to see you at any festivals during the summer? “We’re confirmed for V. Hopefully a few more to come, we love festivals. Check our website for details.” What are your plans for the rest of 2010? “I hope to play some amazing life affirming shows and make lots of people dance, clap, sing and be happy.”
Myspace, Twitter, Facebook or MyTwitFace? “I’m loving twitter at the moment… follow us at sfgofficial.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “I don’t believe in fighting. I would rather talk about it over a pint.” What would be your message to the world? “Our new album is exceptional, check it out and come see us live.” Got any pet hates? “I have a dog, I like pets.” Tea or Coffee? “Coffee in the morning, Tea after lunch, Beer after Dinner.”

Preview: Battle of the Bands
BY ABBY KEDWELL musicaturfingertips@yahoo.co.uk Obviously being a freelance writer for a music magazine you have to find stories and review new and exciting events of a music orientation to keep people reading. So far I have either reviewed a band/musician, a venue or wrote about an event within Folkestone and to my astonishment I haven’t run dry of fantastic people, topics or ideas to write about. I’d be the first to admit that Folkestone is not my chosen place to live but it is undeniably full to the brim with wonderfully talented individuals, fantastic venues and also more than a handful of people that want nothing more than to put Folkestone back on the map. One such couple are Louie and Di Burns. I have mentioned these fabulous people before in my last article, but only briefly. Instead of them making others shine I wanted to scream from the rooftops about just how fantastic these two gems of Folkestone really are. Louie and Di Burns jointly own a community interest company called BlueskyPie; P - Promotions: They promote your event for free through their network of what’s on guides across the whole of Kent and stretching to Ibiza. I - Ideas: They come up with the coolest ideas imaginable for a brilliant and unique night out. E - Events: Including the infamous secret parties, secret gigs, mixed arts events, poetry, film and band nights, they put on the best events around. Knowing many advertisers, promoters and event organisers, I have never met anyone that is generally interested in seeing creative people make something of themselves and ask for nothing in return. They are great judges of
24 | The Gig Guide | April - May
character and are amazingly high spirited. I think that they are making an ever lasting impression on Folkestone’s creative generation.
artist/photographer, their music video filmed at Maidstone Studios and the opportunity to headline at BlueskyPie’s summer gig.
BlueskyPie has come up with new and innovative ideas to promote events, charities, causes, venues and most importantly, people. They have a knack of bringing out the best in people and nurturing their creative talents. I remember writing an article about Folkestone needing a single venue for unsigned bands to get help, gig, get exposure and practice and if Di and Louie keep going strong I think that they might just make that dream a reality.
‘Battle of the Bands’ is being held at The Lanterns, Folkestone on the following dates: Heat 1: March 17th Heat 2: April 7th Heat 3: May 5th Heat 4: June 9th
To make them, in my eyes, Folkestone’s Flavour of the month BlueskyPie have teamed up with The Lanterns and Anchor Baby Recordings to bring you Folkestone’s very own ‘Battle of the Bands’. Something that, if all goes well, could be a hit year after year. BlueskyPie said “This battle of the bands is about giving local bands and musicians the opportunity to let their talents shine in our community. Each band will be recorded live and filmed for a forthcoming documentary and CD, the sales from which will go back into funding music and film based community projects”. The prize for the winner of this exciting new event includes 3 days recording in a state of the art recording studio and a professional sound engineer/producer to record 1,000 CD’s for the band. The prize also includes original art work by a local commissioned
The Grand Final is to be held on July 3rd with the venue still to be confirmed. So between secret parties popping up all over, their own business’ to run, a summer festival to organise, the battle of the bands and many other projects plus breathing, eating and sleeping, they certainly have their work cut out for them but I have no doubt in my mind that these two talented individuals coupled with their friends around them will pull anything off. If you want to help in any way, know anyone or you are creative person who wants advice or you just want more info about an event email: mail@blueskypie.co.uk Don’t forget to check out their website www.blueskypie.co.uk or add them on Facebook to keep up to date with all the events. Good luck to all that enter the “Battle of the bands”. Let the contest begin!
Interview: Katy Brand
Katy Brand oming from a background studying religion and being a one time selfconfessed fundamentalist Christian, you might on paper expect comedian Katy Brand to live a quiet life and be quite introverted. However, her exuberant confidence has helped Katy rise up to be at the forefront of modern comedy.
C
Her TV sketch series; Katy Brand's Big Ass Show saw Katy deliver large slices of 21st century satire, including spoofs of famous celebrities such as Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Kate Moss and Kate Winslet. After three successful series, Katy is now taking the show on the road to perform her famous comedy in front of a live audience. We caught up with Katy to discuss her thoughts on making headway into the comedy industry, who makes her laugh personally, and how the world is going to cope with two famous Katy Brands... For those of our readers who might not have seen your show, describe yourself in three words. “Naughty, funny, musical.” What’s it like to be likened to Catherine Tate? Do you feel honoured as she’s done well as a female comic or would you prefer not to be ‘pigeonholed’ just because you happen to be female too? “Catherine Tate is a brilliant comedian and very successful, so it’s never a problem to be compared to her, although our styles are very different. I do prefer to be thought of as a comedian, rather than a female comedian, though.”
What are your thoughts on the industry being heavily outnumbered by men. Do you think it’s easier for men, that the public prefer to see male comedians, or is it the industry that is at fault somewhere? “It’s a combination of all those things, and it’s more of an issue in stand-up than sketch comedy. But there are loads of brilliant women out there being hilarious at the moment, so it is becoming less of a problem. I try not to approach every new situation thinking ‘I am a woman, I am a woman’ and so I tend to find people treat me as an individual for the most part.” Do you see yourself as a role model to young women as a whole? You’ve certainly proved that you can be successful without having to be stickthin. “I don’t see myself as a role model; perhaps more of an ‘option’. It’s important to be healthy, interesting, fit and sexy and you don’t have to be thin to be any or all of those things.”
April - May | The Gig Guide | 25
Interview: Katy Brand Have you always wanted to make people laugh and did you ever see yourself as a comic? “I have always enjoyed laughing and I’ve always had funny, silly friends so in a way it seemed natural to continue that. It was brilliant to find I could do a job where I could basically mess about with incredibly funny people.” Who makes you laugh? “Caroline Aherne, Julia Davis, Kathy Burke, Matt Lucas, Chris Rock, David Doyle amongst many others.” Have you realised that when Katy Perry marries Russell Brand, there’ll be another famous Katy Brand out there? Will you consider changing your name to Katy Perry? “I maintain that there is only room in this world for one ample bosomed Katy Brand, and I got there first!” What was it like doing your dance performance to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ recently on TV’s ‘Let’s Dance for Sport Relief’? Was it hard to learn the choreography? “It was pretty hard to learn, but I really wanted to get it right. I was very nervous for the first heat, but relaxed for the final. I really wanted to enjoy it second time around!”
26 | The Gig Guide | April - May
You’ve done quite a few song parodies now as part of your show. Do they come naturally to you, and what is your selection process? “We tend to look at who is current when we do song parodies, and find a joke most people will ‘get’. I come from a very musical family, and I have been singing since I was a child, so I always love doing the music sketches.” So which has been your favourite parody (for whatever reason)? “I like doing the big power ballads like Mariah Carey, Leona and Alexandra Burke. I can do proper singing then!” Are you nervous about performing live for your show rather than recording for TV? “I have a long background in live performance so I am used to the nerves, but I am apprehensive and excited. It’s the first full length show I have done, it has an interval and everything!” What have you got planned after the tour? Any new TV projects coming up? “A long lie down, followed by a new idea for a show we are developing for TV. It will be very music based, so watch this space.”
The Gig Guide 6 Favourite Bar Snack? “I love Smith’s Bacon Fries, perhaps a bit too much.” Myspace, Twitter, Facebook or MyTwitFace? “Ha ha – Twitter, definitely. It’s like shouting in a noisy pub with your mates.” What’s the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? “I’m pretty sure I could wrestle a small lion. But we’d end up friends.” What would be your message to the world? “Don’t worry about it, don’t think about it, just get on with it.” Got any pet hates? “I don’t like it when people say ‘myself’ when they mean ‘me’ or ‘I’. It happens a lot on train announcements; ‘the shop is
now open where myself or my team will be happy to serve you’. Argh!” Tea or Coffee? “Both. In the same cup. With a splash of Ribena.”
Katy will be performing her live show Katy Brand’s Big Ass Tour from April, and you can catch her at three venues accross Kent; Tuesday 20th April Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury Sunday 25th April Churchill Theatre, Bromley Sunday 20th May Assembly Theatre, Tunbridge Wells For tickets, contact the appropriate venue direct.

Band: The Lovedays Title: House of Cards Format: Album (13 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Multi-instrumentalist Ben Jones leads quartet The Lovedays and playing a vast selection of instruments ranging from Wurlitzers, Mellotrons and Mandolins, he drives The Lovedays to power pop perfection. They first come across to me as a love child of Oasis, The Bluetones and The Stone Roses, but its all the intricate little production touches and instrumental cameos that set them apart. The Songwriting on display is just right for the genre, thoughtful without being too convoluted and on every song Ben Jones’ vocal performance sends you back to the early days of British indie/pop. I hope the Lovedays are one of the bands involved in the next Blur vs. Oasis style battle of the bands and they possess the talent to be as successful as either of them. Band: Zipperface Title: death of a mime Format: EP (4 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
You wouldn’t normally associate reggae with heavy metal but exciting quartet Zipperface are setting their ways with this combination. It’s pretty unsettling to hear the chugging distortion of lead guitars followed by cheery whistling in the opening track ‘Bring It On’, but its good to see a brave risk taken and they’ve pulled it off commendably. More perfectly structured distortion follows and the title track ‘Death Of A Mime’ is an excellent example of what these boys are capable of, I was also very surprised at the depth of song writing displayed, not to the mention the impressive vocal range and delivery of front man Adam de La Cour. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Zipperface and more cheery whistling! Link: www.myspace.com/zipperface1

Music Reviews
Band: Gorillaz Title: Plastic Beach Format: Album (16 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Gorillaz have looked at Demon Days, executed a U-turn, and travelled in completely the opposite direction for this new album! With every song there’s something to love although it will take a few listens to digest fully. My personal highlight on the album is ‘Superfast JellyFish’, being a big De La Soul fan it’s great to hear them singing about a breakfast cereal! A subject miles away from the usual Rap lyrics of money, low-riders and girls. All the guest stars and experimentation can all seem a little overwhelming at times and it may alienate some fans looking for a ‘Feel Good Inc.’ or a ‘Clint Eastwood’ but there is simply no other group quite like Gorillaz, who could take so many risks and pull it off so magnificently. It’s an absolute masterpiece... Album of the Year in March? Oh go on then! Link: gorillaz.com
Band: Relig Oran Title: Six Tracks Live Format: Live EP (6 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
I’ve always been a fan of British Folk music, from Fairport Convention to Kate Rusby, it’s a fact that we as a nation make fantastic folk music. So I was delighted when I put on Relig Oran’s CD and heard a wonderful mix of eclectic sea shanties, instrumental hoedowns and fine storytelling song writing. The instrumentation and musicianship is perfect for the songs, boisterous when required and restrained when needed. It’s great to hear folk music like this is still being made and still gathering such a following. Hats off to the lads, long live British Folk music! Band: The Automatic Title: Tear The Signs Down Format: Album (11 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
This, the third album from Welsh-based ‘The Automatic’ is one that really should be grabbing your attention. It’s the first release from the band after dropping their old record label B-Unique and setting up their own Armoured Records in a move that gives them complete creative control. Tear The Signs Down is a great mix of indie and punk with a delicious dark electro edge thrown in for good measure. I can hear early Manic Street Preachers, Jimmy Eat World and some touches of New Order in places with ‘Insides’ and ‘Interstates’ being great examples of this. Packed with great song writing and irresistible guitar and electro riffs, this feels like part of a greatest hits album. Highly recommended. Link: www.theautomatic.co.uk

Band: The Features Title: Some Kind Of Salvation Format: Album (14 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
The Features are a quartet all the way from Nashville who are currently gaining a huge following, with good reason. Its difficult to stand out in rock/indie music nowadays as bands constantly run the risk of sounding like someone else, but credit must go the producers who have put The Features stamp on this album. ‘The Drawing Board’ and ‘The Temporary Blues’ are wonderfully catchy pop nuggets whilst personal favourite ‘The Gates Of Hell’ is an understated gem of a song that shows a wonderful psychedelic dark side that is also evident on later track ‘Concrete’. They’ll be touring the UK in April, with full dates up on their myspace page. Lets make them feel welcome, as I’ve got a feeling The Features are going to be Massive! Link: www.myspace.com/thefeatures
Band: Shy Child Title: Liquid Love Format: Album (10 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Shy Child comprise of Pete Cafarella and Nate Smith and the two make wonderful music together. Looking for new electro pop music and can’t decide whether to go old school Pet Shop Boys or more modern MGMT? well why not combine both. Liquid Love and Disconnected get the album off to a flyer and it continues to be a delight to listen to right to the end. Including a deft tribute to Liverpool’s original fab four and plenty of stomping techno beats, this is one band everyone with any sort of interest in electronic music needs to check out and this could be the start of something truly wonderful. Gig Guide favourites are ‘Liquid Love’, ‘Disconnected’ & ‘Strange Emotion’ Link: shychild.com
Band: Craig Sheridan Title: Red On Maroon Format: Album (9 Tracks)
Gig Guide Verdict:
Craig Sheridan is further proof that the south-east can produce some great songwriters. He not only wears his heart on his sleeve but with an emotional voice and powerful lyrics, lets it bleed down his arm. ‘Aurora’ and ‘One Track Road’ are great examples of this. ‘Times Change’ and ‘Winter Sunn’ are two great upbeat numbers that show a sunnier side to his song writing. The album also contains a live acoustic version of ‘Times Change’, which opens with a beautiful solo that makes it well worth listening to again. The real surprise on the album is the last track; a gorgeous instrumental track called ‘Saskatoon Sunset’ that completely caught me off guard, soaring and full of a grace that just washes over you like great ambient music should and I hope he continues to follow in this style for the future. An incredibly promising debut. Link: www.myspace.com/craigsheridanmusik

Not To Be Missed Rochester Sweeps magine a world 400 years ago where children were used as chimney sweeps with low pay and little reward. Medway’s annual Sweeps Festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by the chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday: the one time of the year the sweeps could leave the soot behind and have some fun. The sweeps’ holiday was traditionally held on 1 May each year. Locally, they used to mark the occasion by staging a procession through the streets of Rochester.
