EDITOR’S LETTER
Hi there!
It’s a new year, so start as you mean to go on by getting your home in order, whipping up healthy meals to beat the festive excess and rethinking your sleep routine to get the best night’s rest, so you feel refreshed all year round!
The first couple of months of the year bring exciting new beginnings; it’s a chance to reflect on the year before and try new things in the months ahead. For me, I’m thrilled to be embarking on a house renovation with my partner. When the dirty jobs are done and the dust has settled, I’ll get to work filling the interiors with my favourite furnishings and accessories. I’m particularly inspired by the denim decor ideas that Cassie has found this issue (p76) and one or two of Laurie’s shopping buys on page 8 will definitely feature. I’m a big fan of geometric patterns and have fallen in love with Emily’s living room (p86) – so much so, I just had to put it on the cover! You’ve been telling me that you want to see more of our real homes, so we’re delving deeper into our store of homes to bring more pages every issue. You’ll love Lucy’s 1930s semi (p12), Pauline’s four-bed family home (p28) and Carmen’s stylish new build (p44), which are packed with decorating ideas. Finally, if you have trouble drifting off at night, our Style Made Easy pullout (p61) may come in handy. It’s all about sleep – from the ideal mattress to the best pre-bedtime snack – sharing how to get the best night’s rest. It’s definitely helped me give insomnia the boot! Happy styling!

Every issue we have a little extra help from members of our reader panel, Stylists at Home. Look for their tips and ideas in the magazine… Becky Greenaway
Alex Blakelock ABOUT ME I’m 33, and I live with my partner Paul, 39, in a three-bedroom 1950s dormer bungalow in Eversley, Hampshire. WHAT IS YOUR BEST HOME STYLE TIP? Never be afraid to ask people for their opinions – from family and friends to shop assistants. They can often give you advice on things you might not have considered before.
ABOUT ME I’m 26, and I live with my boyfriend Jack, 27, in a three-bed semi-detached house in Walsall. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? I would reprioritise the order in which we renovated our house – rather than spending money on having our living room fireplace built, we would first have invested in getting our bathroom done up!
Bernadette Brown
Karl Grant ABOUT ME I’m 38, and I live in a converted chapel built in 1807 in Bedfordshire, with my wife Sarah, 39, and daughter Ava, 6, and I blog at TheWhitewashHare.weebly.com. WHAT’S YOUR LATEST PROJECT? I did a major paint job in our living room and dining area, creating a neutral backdrop – and like most major jobs, it wasn’t an easy one!
ABOUT ME I’m 48 and I live with my husband Darren, 47, and children Lucina, 18, and Joshua, 15, in a fourbed detached in Northamptonshire. WHAT’S YOUR BEST MONEYSAVING TIP? Don’t be quick to throw things away – you might find you can reuse them, or sell them if not. Also, plan ahead and consider when sales are on throughout the year.
Samantha Mason
Jade Wilce
ABOUT ME I’m 42, and I live in a four-bed detached house in Essex with my husband Paul, 44, and our daughters Holly, 15, and Abbie, 13. WHAT’S YOUR BEST HOME STYLE TIP? When making the beds, always tuck your bedding in nice and tight, and make sure the sheets and duvet are impeccably ironed, for a luxurious hotel look.
GET IN TOUCH Have you just finished decorating your home or maybe transformed a room from drab to fab? Email us at styleathome@timeinc.com with some photos and you could be featured in an upcoming issue of Style at Home.
ABOUT ME I’m 29, and I live with my husband Matthew, 32, in a three-bed semi in Gloucestershire. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM? I love my bathroom. Until recently it was my least favourite room, but we’ve transformed it by adding a beautiful roll-top bath, clean white subway tiles on the walls, and patterned floor tiles.
We want to see what you’ve done in your own homes!

ABOUT ME I’m Lucy Tortise, 35. I live with my husband James, 30, our son Freddie, 4, and we’re expecting our second child later this year. MY HOME A 1930s two-bedroom semi in Solihull, West Midlands, which we bought in 2011. WHEN I BOUGHT IT I was worried about the lack of space for a family home and all of the rooms needed updating. The wallpaper needed to be stripped and the kitchen space wasn’t practical for us. AND NOW The house feels very light and airy for a small twobedroom property and it’s the perfect space for entertaining. STYLE TIP Work with your own style and don’t try to follow trends. Have fun experimenting with ideas and don’t overthink it too much.

SIZE MATTERS ‘The grey sofa from DFS fits perfectly into the small space and doesn’t feel overbearing’
Concerned about the lack of space in her 1930s house, budget-savvy Lucy, 35, used her eye for detail and a thrifty approach to create a stylish and spacious home for her rapidly growing family
A
s my husband James and I were first time buyers, we were mindful of the need to not overspend on a property, and end up with a hefty mortgage to pay off,’ says Lucy. ‘We were looking for somewhere within a sensible budget, that we could still put our own design stamp on. It was James who fell in love with this two-bedroom semi-detached home dating from the 1930s and convinced me it was a great buy. But to begin with, I wasn’t so sure, due to the lack of bedrooms, and I was worried about storage space, too. We were drawn to the peaceful location, near to our family and friends, and we loved the wild garden at the back of the house that looks out over beautiful rolling countryside. Looking back now, I realise we may have been a little naive about what work needed doing to the house, as when we moved in, I quickly realised that simply buying some new furniture and pretty cushions wouldn’t be quite enough to turn it into the home I’d envisaged!
Taking on a challenge
While the structure of the house was good and sturdy, we knew that we wanted to rework the layout of most of the rooms. The original kitchen was a very small galley space, with a door that led through to a small dining room, but we wanted something that was more of an open-plan design, to suit our growing family. We knocked down the wall between the dining room and kitchen to create an airy kitchen diner that makes much better use of the space. The whole house needed new electrics, which was a big job, and we had all the rooms re-plastered when we

We still need to have the bathroom done so it better suits our needs as a family, especially as we have a new baby on the way, due this summer. Due to budget constraints, we had to tackle the project in stages, but we’re thrilled with the finished result. I worked hard to get the fireplace in the living room to fit in with our decor. I painted the surround in a bright white paint to match the walls, then bought some special marble paint that can be used near heat to paint the underneath section black. I had to give the fireplace several coats to make it stand out but it’s certainly made a big difference to the room and is now a striking focal point when you first walk in.
Stylish updates
As the house can sometimes feel small, I’ve tried to keep the decor bright and airy by using lots of white wherever possible. I then added splashes of various colours

James and I both love to travel, and we lived in Australia for a year before we started a family, so we’ve picked up plenty of interesting pieces from around the world that we like to incorporate into our decor for an individual look. I want people to feel calm and comfortable in our home, and I find lovely aromas very soothing, so I like to use scented candles

to make the house feel cosy. My favourite candle has to be the Winter fragrance from The White Company – it makes the whole house feel so snug and inviting. I love to shop for homewares in highstreet stores like Habitat, Ikea and John Lewis, as well as TK Maxx and HomeSense for one-off finds. There’s also a fabulous furniture shop in Solihull called Liv, which stocks all sorts of gorgeous interior pieces. I tend to get my design and decorating inspiration from interiors magazines and
accounts I follow on Instagram, as well as from my mum. She’s always had a very cool, interesting style so I value her opinion a lot when I’m buying pieces for my home. As we’ve been trying to stick to a budget, I’m a bit of a bargain hunter. I’m always looking around for the best-value way to get hold of something I really like.

My mum has recently taken up knitting and she has made two beautiful throws for us. She knitted a monochrome one for Freddie’s bedroom that he adores! It’s great to have something that’s been made by a loved one, as it adds to the cosy, family feel, plus it also means you have a truly unique piece. While I’m not particularly crafty myself, I love to get stuck in with DIY (even if I sometimes do it wrong!) and once I have an idea in my head, I like to get on with it rather than think about it for too long. I’m constantly playing around with the position and arrangement of our furniture and accessories, tweaking pictures and reorganising cupboards, and I’m lucky to have a husband who just goes with the flow and doesn’t question why the sofa is sitting in a different spot in the living room from one evening to the next! From house to home
Despite my initial reservations about space, we absolutely love our home now, and while it may not be the biggest, we’re very happy here as a family. I would much rather sleep at night not worrying about the debt that would be hanging over us had we bought a more expensive house, or designer furniture. It just goes to show that you don’t need to spend a fortune to create a happy home. I don’t see myself ever getting tired of living here – I feel proud when people come round to visit and I love getting creative with re-styling the rooms when I feel it’s time for a change!’

Iron a tea towel to remove any creases. Carefully cut your potato into the shape that you’ve chosen. We made a triangle by slicing a potato in half to create a flat, stamping base, placing it flat-side down and then cutting the sides of the triangle. The semi circle was made by cutting the leftover side in half. When cutting, leave enough of the potato to hold onto behind the stamping surface. Use a paintbrush to apply the paint to the potato shape, then stamp onto the towel.

‘I fell in love with
COUNTRY STYLE’
Renovating a rural home helped Pauline, 48, find her passion for pretty pastels and a modern rustic look
MY HOME...
ABOUT ME I’m Pauline Matthews, 48, and I live with my husband Tim, 51. We make and sell personalised gifts and keepsakes at hugsandhearts.co.uk. We have two grown-up sons, Tom and Cobey. MY HOME A four-bedroom 1960s house near Hawarden, North Wales, bought in September 2009. WHEN I BOUGHT IT It was very old-fashioned inside, with a dark kitchen and lots of dated carpets and wallpaper. There was no central heating and no bathroom upstairs. AND NOW We’ve added a sun-filled dining room, an upstairs bathroom, and restored the original parquet flooring throughout. I’ve completely redecorated, mixing classic and upcycled furniture with pastel colours and pretty, country-style wallpapers, fabrics and accessories. STYLE TIP Combine painted furniture with natural wood finishes for warmth and a loose, relaxed feel.

his house was originally built for my great uncle and aunts back in the 1960s, and I like the idea that it’s still in our family today,’ says Pauline. ‘My husband Tim and I bought it from my elderly great aunt about six years ago. We had a modern home in a nearby town at the time, but we’d always imagined ourselves moving to the country once our boys had left school. The peace and tranquillity of the location were a big draw, but the house had been
empty for a while when we came to look at it and I was concerned that it needed complete modernisation. That didn’t put Tim off, though. He loved it straightaway and was confident that we could transform it. My great aunt was thrilled that her home was staying in the family and she kindly let us start renovating it gradually before the sale was actually completed.

There was also a lot of help from both our dads, particularly with rebuilding one of the fireplaces. Sadly, they’ve both since passed away, but it’s lovely to still be living with their handiwork. The rewiring was probably the worst part. There was dust everywhere, and when I saw the empty rooms with the walls all chiselled out, the scale of our challenge really hit home. Once the replastering got underway, though, I could see the house starting to take shape again. Tim and I spent hours scraping off the old-fashioned

New space
We moved in after about seven months of renovation, although we still had plenty of plans, including a complete rethink of the kitchen. The dark oak cabinets weren’t my taste and I really wanted a central island and a light, open feel. We decided to redesign the whole room, taking a little extra space from the hall and adding an orangery-style dining area at the

back. Tim sketched out the initial plan and worked together with a local builder to create a fabulous new space with a glass apex roof, big windows and French windows leading out to the garden. Once the orangery and kitchen were completed, we carried on working our way through the house, redecorating and improving as our budget allowed. The main bathroom is downstairs, but four years ago, we put a second one in upstairs, which has made a big difference. Rather than lose a bedroom, we converted a built-in coat cupboard on the landing. We had to plan the space really carefully, because I was determined to squeeze in a beautiful roll-top bath as well as a basin

sources like Cabbages & Roses or Laura Ashley, but I’ll use them sparingly to get the look I want while keeping costs down. Investment pieces like sofas and beds were bought from local retailers, but I’ve also upcycled plenty of second-hand items. I’m always hunting in charity shops, house-clearance places and on eBay. I’ll pick out things with a nice shape or design details that I know will stand out once I’ve painted them. I like to think about the history and story behind each item too, and if something catches my eye, I’ll always buy it there and then. It might well be gone the next time I look! Choosing the new kitchen was one of our earliest decisions, and I went for very simple white units and lovely oak worktops from Howdens. As my country-inspired scheme evolved, though, I realised I wanted to change a few elements. I’d never been quite happy with the modern up-and-over wall units and I wasn’t sure about the mosaic-tiled splashback any more, either. A few months ago, I took the plunge

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED…
Q
How much room do I need? Bathrooms can be created pretty much anywhere, although some spaces will be easier and quicker to convert than others due to the proximity of pipework and drainage. As a guide, you’ll require a space of at least 0.8m x 2.1m* to accommodate a shower, WC and basin, while a cloakroom can fit almost anywhere as long as there’s enough headroom to stand and turn comfortably.
standard sizes, so a wetroom would be a better option in an awkward space.
Q
Q
Where can I find space? Think about the unused areas in your home, such as the loft, basement, garage and utility room. Also consider below the stairs, storage areas and large built-in cupboards. Another option is to portion off space from a large bedroom, hallway or landing to fit in an en suite. The height and shape of the area you’re working with is important. For example, understairs cloakrooms work well because the height increases allow the lower, inaccessible section to accommodate plumbing. Also, shower trays mostly come in
Make your space feel bigger with wall-hung furniture. Glide II 50 unit and basin, £800, Bauhaus Bathrooms
Should I convert a spare bedroom? While a second bathroom can boost the price of your home, losing a bedroom may devalue it more – speak to a local estate agent first. However, if you plan to live there for several years, any devaluing can be offset by convenience.
Q
What else do I need to think about? Ensuring there’s enough headroom is important, although there are ways to get around it, such as placing a bath or storage in the part of a room with limited height and preserving the highest areas

STRUGGLING TO FIND SPACE? THINK ABOUT CREATING A‘JACK AND JILL’ EN SUITE BETWEEN TWO BEDROOMS for showers. A practical ceiling height is around 2.1m. You may need to reinforce your floor joists if you’re having a bath – remember to factor in the weight of the bath, the water and a person.
Q
Should fixtures be placed near existing water and waste lines? Yes, because it’s more practical and cost-effective. If your new bathroom is a long way from the boiler, or the boiler doesn’t have the capacity to supply an additional bathroom, the hot water supply could be weaker and cooler. Having your soil pipe nearby will mean waste water can be taken away easily. Moving a soil pipe is costly, so if it is
far away, consider installing a macerator – these grind waste up, then pump it away.
Q
Is it something you can do yourself? Installing a bathroom requires a good level of DIY skill, but you’ll make a huge saving on the fitting costs. Even if you don’t feel confident enough to do the whole project, you could try some of the jobs yourself, such as tiling. Most projects will be subject to building regulations – see planningportal.co.uk for information.
Q
What sort of professionals can I use if I’m not doing it myself? If the new space is an awkward shape, or you’re opting for non-standard fittings,
it’s a good time to call in a plumber or bathroom fitter (on average this can cost around £1,018, plumbers usually charge between £20-£40 per hour**). Wetrooms, for example, have more complex drainage and need to be tanked (waterproofed). Professionals will also know what building regulations are required for your project, can often self-certify their work, and offer advice should any problems crop up. Before my husband Paul and I got too bogged down with obsessing over paint charts and fabric samples, we decided early on that we would add a conservatory to give us a much-needed dining room. It’s such a light room and it’s lovely to have dinner while looking out onto the garden. I kept it feeling cosy by introducing lots of soft furnishings. Chic and unique
I like French pieces and spent hours trailing through online French-style and shabby chic websites for products – some of my best buys have come from places like Swoon Editions, Within Home, La Maison Chic, Nicky Cornell and Melody Maison. I like to mix vintage pieces, such as the wooden linen sofa from Cambrewood, with modern designs like the hedgehog cushions from Scion. I’m an avid reader of homes magazines and catalogues, and I like to keep up with the current trends – I just love anything new. I’m particularly fond of my two 19th-century French tub chairs, which I sourced from La Maison Chic. They’ve been reupholstered in a Clarke & Clarke crushed velvet fabric, which is a brilliant

Great result ‘Using floating cube shelves to display toys in a child’s room, like the red ones in Kai’s bedroom, is a fab way to store things, but also to add colour, interest and personality to the space.’
I’m really pleased with our finished home – it has a flow about it and the room styles all mirror the French theme throughout. But that said, my home is an ever-changing canvas and every season I add a few new touches here and there. It’s come a long way from the magnolia walls of old!’

Keep the basics neutral - floors, walls, palette and window treatment – for a relaxed feel
Introduce timeless elegance to your home by adding some classic chateau-chic style
G
ive your home some wow factor, like Carmen has, by opting for a classic French touch and a bit of chateau chic. This look is perfect for a boudoir-style bedroom, thanks to the carved furniture, upholstered headboards and crisp white linen that define it. But French-inspired furniture and accessories will also look at home in a neutral or pastel-hued living or dining room. Choose a baroque carved mirror in contemporary silver for an instant update in your entryway, or hang it above a mantelpiece in the dining room. While this kind of scheme can look expensive, there are plenty of high-street and online
options that won’t break the bank but will achieve the same style. From ornate dressing tables to upholstered beds and occasional furniture, in a range of pretty shades, there’s something to suit all tastes and room themes.
French fancy
Add some classic finishing touches with elegant, glass chandeliers, gilt table lamps, Provencal patterned cushions and toile prints in wallpapers or on upholstery. If you’re after a more rustic farmhouse look, go for painted wooden furniture, linen-covered sofas and chairs, ticking-stripe fabrics and shabby-chic florals for a more laid-back feel.
Sitting pretty
Pick a sophisticated silver-painted dressing table and mirror with matching velvet-topped stool for a chic look in the bedroom. This Antique Baroque French dressing table set is a modern take on a classic Louis design. Plus the storage is perfect for toiletries, make-up and jewellery, £530, Homes365.

White out
Opt for a calming, pale scheme to achieve an elegant, classic Gallic look. The clean colour is complemented by warm brass accents and accessories. This white-painted Delphine bedside table, £260, The French Bedroom Company, has a rustic feel.

Wipe down the surface of the glassware to remove any marks and make sure it’s clean. In the spray bottle, add equal measurements of malt vinegar and cold water, and shake to mix thoroughly. There’s no need to fill the bottle all the way to the top with the mixture, as you’re only going to need a few sprays per item.
58 | FEBRUARY 2017
2
Use masking tape to cover up the top part of the glass if you don’t want it to be painted. Working on newspaper in a well-ventilated area, spray a small amount of the mixture onto the item and leave for one minute before spraying lightly with the silver paint. Do this all the way around the vase (stand it up if easier).
2
3
Leave the spray paint to dry for approximately 20 minutes, then use a small corner of kitchen roll (or a cloth) to dab the bubbles that have formed on the paint. This will burst the bubbles and reveal the glass beneath to create the mercurised look. Continue until the surface is clear of bubbles, then leave to dry completely.

OF SLEEP
We know that we need to catch our zzzs, but what actually happens when we switch off?
S
leep is vital to survival – without it we can’t function. As we sleep, the body ‘recharges’ itself in various ways, such as muscle repair, memory consolidation and hormone release for growth and appetite. It does this by working through sleep cycles. A complete cycle of sleep is made up of five stages, which take you through light sleep, dreaming and deep sleep – we need to experience all five to be truly rested.
A snore point
Each cycle takes around 90 minutes and most people need five or six in a night. There are myriad factors that get in the way, such as late nights and early mornings, but things like alcohol and stress play a part. Almost any element of your daily life can affect the kind of sleep you have. But the good news is, you have the power to control it, which means your best night’s sleep could be just days away…

SLEEP
If you don’t feel relaxed in the place where you sleep, your chances of a good night’s rest are slim – here’s how to get the basics right
Y
ou don’t need to fully redecorate to create a tranquil atmosphere in your bedroom, but it’s worth taking a look at the layout, colours and accessories you have, as a few simple changes could make all the difference. Consider lighting first of all – some beside lamps or wall-mounted lamps provide a softer feel than a main overhead in the evening. There are some really interesting lightbulb colour options on the market, which can be set to create the optimum ambience. Natural light isn’t your friend when you’re trying to get some shut-eye; investing in shutters, black-out blinds or black-out lining in curtains gives you full control over the light in the room and stops you being woken by early sunrise.
Tight on space? A storage bed like the Sapphire Ottoman is a stylish, practical choice, from £3,099, Time4Sleep
Hibernation hues
Colour plays a part here, too – stark white will reflect any light it can around the room, so go for something a bit softer if you like pale colours. Steer clear of bold, bright contrasts on walls, bed linen and accessories, as they can be too stimulating. Other quick fixes you can try include having a clear-out (clutter equals stress!) and banishing the TV from your room – it’s much better to wind down with a good book before you go to sleep.

TO DOZE OFF
The basic essential for a good night’s sleep is a comfy bed – get that right and you’ll be enjoying sweet dreams for years to come
L
et’s start with the basics. There’s no point shelling out for a new bed if it won’t fit in your room, so measure and work out the size you need. Check the measurements of beds you consider as sizes can vary, even if they are labelled as king or double. The style of bed you go for is entirely a matter of preference, as is your mattress…
How much support?
It’s said that the firmer the mattress, the better – but as most designs meet a good standard of support, it’s more about how you feel on it. Never buy a mattress without trying it first – find your nearest showroom and go for a lie down! Take a book and spend a good 10 minutes on each bed (take off your shoes and coat!).
Which mattress?
The main types are open coil (single springs held together by one wire); continuous spring (many springs made from a single wire, so more responsive); pocket spring (individual fabric-wrapped springs to prevent roll-together); and memory foam, which moulds to your shape. If you’re still not sure, think about a great sleep (or a bad one) you’ve had away from home, and find out what type the mattress was.

very day is different, and you can’t guarantee you’ll go to bed at the same time each night, but there are a few habits you can adopt to help you drift off. The obvious things are to drink a cup of herbal tea and cut out caffeine before the evening. But what else can you try? Lighting and heating play a big part in how your body winds down. Avoid bright overhead lights and turn on a lamp in the bedroom so the atmosphere will be restful when you finally turn in. Keep lighting low in the living room during the evening, too.

Cool and unconnected
Make sure the bedroom isn’t too warm – it needs to be slightly cooler than the living room, so you can comfortably sleep under your covers without overheating. And, of course, turn off that mobile phone or tablet a good hour before bed – the blue light that these gadgets emit stimulate the brain, stopping you from winding down.

9:10PM Turn off your phone, tablet and TV, as the blue light stimulates your mind. Plus, if you start checking emails or watching a show on Netflix, time can
run away and you’ll be late to bed.
9:15PM Run yourself a bath – choose a bath oil with lavender, such as Lola’s Apothecary, £34, Notonthehighstreet. com, and light candles rather than using the bathroom light.
9:40PM Make yourself a cup of tea, preferably one
specifically for relaxing such as Clipper Teas’ Snore & Peace, £1.68 for 20 sachets. Make it now and it’ll be cool enough to drink just before you clean your teeth.

id you know that last choccie biscuit or bowl of cereal you have in front of the telly at 9pm could make all the difference between a good night’s sleep and tossing and turning until the early hours? Sugary or spicy foods before bed can affect sleep. And it’s not just what you eat – a coffee or tea can keep you alert for up to eight hours, and although alcohol does help you drift off, it bypasses crucial sleep cycles. Simple swaps can make all the difference – drink herbal tea instead of caffeinated tea, and eat bananas, almonds and dairy products, which can aid sleep.
Free your mind
Stress is another factor that dictates how well you sleep. The best way to decrease stress levels before bed is to try to take your mind off the problem (without using the TV). Yoga is well known for its relaxing effects and anyone can do it. Go online or find a good yoga book to find a simple lesson for relaxing. Q
YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO…
SLEEP
If you share a bed and one of you prefers a firmer mattress, what can be done about it?
A pocket sprung mattress with smaller diameter springs spreads body weight and reduces the pull one sleeper has on another. A zip-and-link bed might be the best choice – two different mattresses, zipped together, on two separate bases.
Q
What’s the best bed and bedding to go for if you suffer from allergies?
It depends on the allergies. Foams might be considered less irritable for those with allergies to hair or wool. Asthma sufferers may find it better to encase their mattress, pillows and duvets in anti-allergy covers.
The Flaxby range is compatible with zip & link mattresses, from £899, Dreams

BERNADETTE SAYS
‘Introducing plants can really improve the air quality in your bedroom.’
What’s the optimum amount of hours of sleep per night?
We differ as to how much sleep we need – it’s better to have six solid hours than eight spent tossing and turning! Research suggests that regularly sleeping less than 6 hours isn’t ideal, while sleeping for more than 9-10 hours regularly might mask issues, such as depression. A bath with soothing oils like lavender can help you doze off
Q
Are there any food types that should be avoided before bedtime, or any that aid sleep?
It’s best to avoid heavy, spicy food too close to bedtime. Proteins containing the amino acid tryptophan, combined with carbohydrate, are good. Tryptophan is important because when it reaches the brain, it converts to serotonin, which in turn produces the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. A turkey or peanut butter sandwich is good, or a milky drink.
Q
Mattress topper, £75, The Fine Bedding Company
What are the benefits of a mattress topper and how do I know whether or not I need one?
Mattress toppers are experiencing a surge in popularity. They can change the feel of your bed and should be replaced more frequently than a mattress (every 2-3 years) for both hygiene and comfort reasons – but are no substitute for a new mattress.

If you’re nervous about creating a brandnew look with denim blues, start small and work your way up to a point where you’re happy with the feel of the room. Inject the colour with a statement cushion or piece of wall art to understand how it works with your existing scheme and then gradually add in more pieces in the same hue if you’re feeling bold. To really go all out for a denim-blue look, embrace the dark side and choose to paint your whole room in this dynamic shade. This on-trend palette is sure to make a strong statement, but stick to painting just one or two feature walls if your room is on the compact side, as the colour could feel overpowering in smaller spaces.

Bathrooms & bedrooms
Considering the soothing properties of blue, denim is a great colour choice for bedrooms, bathrooms and any spaces you unwind in. In the bathroom, not only is the colour associated with cleanliness but it has strong links to water, of course, so is a popular shade for this part of the house. Use denim tones to add interest to a white bathroom, whether with towels and accessories, or larger pieces. In a bedroom, try painting a feature wall in Denim Drift as a focal point, or choose a similar coloured wallpaper to channel a tranquil vibe. Alternatively, opt for blue bedding for a less permanent decorating idea – layer up your bed with a blue throw and several cushions for a quick update.

Make a rag-frame
CHALKBOARD
Try your hand at making a colourful rag-rug frame to use up fabric scraps and create an eye-catching memo board for your home
I
f you like to write lists or inspiring words of wisdom, chances are you’ll find a chalkboard displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall handy. Why not turn your chalkboard into a fun feature by giving it a colourful rag rug frame? This project comes from Rag Rugs, Pillows & More by Elspeth Jackson, which includes a chapter on the essential rag-rug techniques. Take a look, and once you’ve mastered the basics, show off your new skill by making this easy chalkboard frame.
HOW TO
1
2
TAKES 3 HRS
Wooden 11 x 14in photo frame Burlap or hessian Marker pen & ruler Sewing machine Assorted fabrics Fabric scissors Gauge & latch hook Scissors & staple gun Newspaper Paintbrush Chalkboard paint
1
Place frame (minus backing board and glass) face down on the burlap, leaving at least 9cm between the frame and edge of the burlap. Draw around the inner and outer edges of the frame using a marker pen – this forms the area you will rag rug.
2
3
4
Measure out and draw 3cm-deep tabs onto each inside and outside edge of the drawn frame (they’ll wrap around the frame to hold the rag rugging in place).
3
Use a sewing machine to hem along all the lines using one row of placeholder hemming stitch. Cut off any loose threads.
4
Cut your fabric into short strips for shaggy rag rugging, using the gauge. Rag rug inside the hemmed frame (but not in the tabs). Keep rag rugging until no burlap can be seen from the front.
5
Trim any excess burlap from inside and outside the rag-rugged frame. Take care not to cut off the tabs you hemmed earlier.
6 5 82 | FEBRUARY 2017
6
Place burlap shaggy side down and line up the frame with the rag rugging. Fold tabs over the frame and staple to the frame where the backing board will sit. Paint board with chalkboard paint, leave to dry.

‘I went for a fun BOOK NOOK ‘This alcove makes a great reading spot. The rattan chair is from Cox & Cox’
MY ROOM...
ABOUT ME I’m Emily Martin, 30, and I live with my husband Dan, 34, an RAF sergeant, and our two sons, Ethan, 4, and Josh, 2. We moved into our three-bedroom house in Upminster, east London, in 2010. MY CHALLENGE I wanted to give our bland cream-coloured living room a more contemporary look and create a cosier space that we could enjoy as a family. MY WISH LIST A new sofa was essential – preferably a darker colour, as our existing cream sofa wasn’t very practical with two young children. I also wanted to have window shutters instead of curtains and a smaller coffee table, as our old one took up quite a bit of room.

painted BACKDROP’ STYLE TIP
‘Try painting a pattern on your wall. We did a geo design, but you could do stripes or spots’
Emily, 30, turned her bland living space into a modern scheme, using soft hues and a striking geo-design wall
W
hen my husband Dan and I bought this house it needed a lot of work, but the living room was one of the first areas we tackled,’ says Emily. ‘We didn’t have a large budget, but once we’d stripped the wallpaper and had the walls replastered and painted, it looked much better. We kept the walls neutral and already had a beige sofa, so we just got some curtains to match – it wasn’t that exciting, but it was an improvement and meant we could continue with the rest of the house.
Time to get planning
Six years down the line, the room badly needed an overhaul. We’d grown tired of the beige and cream decor, and the sofa had seen better days. The only thing we liked was the false wall that houses the fireplace and TV – the rest had to go! Wallpaper was first on our list and I started looking out for something a bit different. I quite like modern, geometric patterns, so I kept my eye out for a design that would work. In the meantime, and after a lot of research, reading homes magazines and looking on social media, I spotted a painted wall on Pinterest that used lots of different shades of paint and big triangular shapes. I showed it to Dan and he agreed that we’d give it a go. We decided on different shapes of white, grey and peachy-pink for something unusual.
Decorating starts
FRESH LOOK ‘The new shutters from Web-Blinds really changed the look of our room, too. I bought the cushions from Oliver Bonas and Candelle & Co’
The painting got underway in October last year – we had to mask off the shapes and it took a lot of time, but the end result was well worth it. While this was going on, we went shopping for a sofa. Dan and I didn’t agree on anything, but when we both saw this sofa from Dwell and sat on it, we knew it was the one. We liked that the chaise is nice and wide, and that it’s a darker fabric, which with two young boys is essential! Our old beige curtains had to go as well, and we brought some beautiful white wooden shutters that give the room

Stylists at Home JADE SAYS
IN THE FRAME ‘I got my artwork from Desenio – there were so many I wanted! The lamp and book ends are from Oliver Bonas’
GREAT IDEA
‘If you can’t afford a real marble shelf, do as we did and wrap an old shelf in marble-look vinyl’
‘Create beautiful vignettes by displaying the things you love on sideboards and your coffee table. Mix them up, so that the space is always changing.’
GOLDEN GLOW. ‘This gold lightbulb shelf is from MiaFleur and is so handy for reading’
‘OUR HI-GLOSS WHITE SIDEBOARD HOUSES OUR BROADBAND ROUTER, DVD PLAYER ETC,TO KEEP WIRES AND BOXES OUT OF THE WAY’
Finishing touches
When it came to accessories, I couldn’t wait to get started. I’d heard of an artwork company called Desenio, and when I viewed its website I wanted everything! It was really hard deciding what prints to buy, but I’m so pleased with my choices. Oliver Bonas had perfect cushions, in pink and soft green – I had to sneak pink hues in here and there, so Dan didn’t notice! I’m so happy with our room – it looks so much more interesting and if we ever get tired of the feature wall, we can just paint over it – but that won’t be for a while yet!’

It’s full of classic style appeal and the rough finish of the wall looks especially gorgeous with the shine of the fab collection of vibrant vases. The bright pops of colour from the accessories give the room personality and the light-up letter in the fireplace is a perfect blend of modern design and antique features.’ Lizzie Hudson, Editor

Cushion collection
‘I love the eclectic mix of cushions in this simple, neutral living room. Soft furnishings are a really simple way to brighten up your scheme and can be easily varied according to your tastes or the change in seasons. These shades would be perfect for a springtime look.’ Amy Hodge, Food Editor
Perfect planks
‘I’d never get bored of such a quirky scheme as this – I love the artwork and the decanter-style lamp. Simple wood panelling like this is a great way to achieve a log-cabin look, and as there are so many real and imitation woodpanelling options out there – even wallpaper – it can suit any budget.’ Laurie Davidson, Homes Editor

Back to basics
‘Having a neutral scheme with white walls doesn’t have to be limiting or boring. It’s my favourite backdrop, as you can change the overall look of a room just by picking accessories in different hues and a patterned rug. I love the pink and yellow pops of colour here.’ Lizzie Hudson, Editor

Dark and daring
‘A grey-coloured sofa is a practical choice for busy family homes. Keep the walls and floors light in colour so the look doesn’t feel too heavy, and team dark and neutral elements with contrasting accessories, such as cushions and throws, to balance out the overall look.’ Cassie Pryce, Deputy Homes Editor
Keep it simple
‘This pared-back living-room scheme is fabulously cosy and tactile – I love the rustic side table made from vintage wooden crates. This look may be functional, but it doesn’t feel cold thanks to the huge fluffy throw and neutral carpet. Simple yet stylish!’ Laurie Davidson, Homes Editor
Young at heart
‘I love the idea of displaying children’s artwork properly – it’s a nice change from just sticking it on the fridge where it’ll get dog-eared and dirty. I also like the colour scheme – I’m currently plucking up the courage to paint either a dark grey or a navy wall in my own home. The neon sign is lots of fun and a bar trolley is surely the must-have item for 2017!’ Alison Walter, Art Director

‘I’ve got a
MUDROOM AT LAST!’ Fed up with dirty boots and laundry lying around, Becki, 38, reimagined an empty space at the side of her extension
MY ROOM...
W
hen we extended across the back of our house in 2015, there were certain restrictions on the plans,’ says Becki, ‘and as well as a great kitchen-diner with room to relax and views onto the garden, we were left with a space at the side, where we had to bring the building in again, and we needed to decide what to do with it. We initially thought about a cloakroom, as we have no ground-floor loo. As a long, thin rectangular room, it had its limitations, but my secret weapon is my husband Kieron, as he’s so handy and practical. He used to build stage sets, so he lets me know what will be possible to construct.
MUDROOM MAGIC ‘It’s lovely to have all the washing tidied away and a place for people to leave their shoes’
Making plans ABOUT ME I’m Becki Ash, 38, and I manage an agency for photographers and stylists (oakmanagement.co.uk), along with my husband Kieron, 42. We live with our children Bailey, 7, and Isla, 5, and our dog Kai and cat Teddy, in a four-bedroom Victorian semi-detached home in Wallington, Surrey, which we moved into back in July 2006. MY CHALLENGE After extending our house in 2015, we were left with an awkward area at the rear. I wanted to make the best use of the blank rectangular space. MY WISH LIST I was keen to have an American-style ‘mudroom’, incorporating a downstairs cloakroom, somewhere to hide away the washing machine and dryer. We also needed some shelving and space to store our dirty boots and laundry, plus a place to stash away the pet food.
94 | FEBRUARY 2017
I then started thinking about the idea of an American mudroom, which I’d always longed for. The idea of moving the washing machine and dryer out of the kitchen was really attractive, as was having room to sort the laundry and somewhere to put boots and coats rather than the hall. Plus we’ve got a Rottweiler and a cat, so it’s also a place to feed them and store their food.
First steps
When it came to thinking about storage, I found just what I was looking for at Jali. You can create a shelving system online, and they deliver it. I knew Kieron could fit it and we had a kitchen unit left over from the extension, so we incorporated that, too. We were set on getting a new washing machine and dryer, so we left space for those underneath. Kieron was doing this in the evenings and at weekends last spring, so it took several months in total, but we didn’t have to pay for labour.
Boxing it in
We wanted to have a worktop across the machines, to prepare the pet food and sort washing, and we found an attractive

walnut one in Ikea, which Kieron also fitted down the sides to make it look neat. We also picked up a stepladder stool, which fitted between the dryer and the door – I’m not the tallest, so it’s useful!
Installing the cloakroom
Initially we had just thought about a loo and basin in the cloakroom, but Kieron suddenly realised we could actually make it into a wetroom with a shower as well. This is incredibly useful for grubby kids, when we’ve been gardening and also for hosing down the dog! He watched videos online about fitting a wetroom, as you have to set a shallow tray into the floor at an angle so the water flows away, and although he didn’t get it right first time, and had to take up the carefully laid tiles, he got there in the end. To tie the scheme together, we chose the same limestone-effect cream tiles on the floor and on three of the walls. But Kieron wanted something a bit more dramatic and hotel-like for the back wall, so he looked into walnut-effect MDF, which can be varnished and made waterproof, and he then managed to fit it one weekend.
Final touches
Having done my research, a big chunk of the budget went on a new eco-friendly washing machine and dryer from Samsung, which are so much more efficient than my old ones. I bought some big jars to put the washing tablets and fabric conditioner in, and treated myself to some attractive toiletries and new towels. Now the work is done and the space is finished, I can honestly say our new mudroom is one of my favourite areas in the house as it’s just so useful.’

‘Now we can enjoy
FAMILY LIFE TOGETHER!’
Fed up with her small kitchen, Rachel, 42, extended into the garden and transformed the layout to create a kitchen-diner with space to eat and relax
MY ROOM...
ABOUT ME I’m Rachel Hawes, 42, a marketing manager, and I live with my husband Mitchell, 48, a business development manager, our daughters Georgia, 9, and Emily, 4, and cat, Jules. We live in a three-bedroom, modern terraced townhouse in Isleworth, Middlesex. MY CHALLENGE The existing kitchen on the ground floor was too cramped and we wanted to extend it to create a large kitchendiner. It was important to have a space where everyone could spend time together, rather than having to go up and down the stairs to the living room above. MY WISHLIST I wanted a modern kitchen that had flashes of colour and high-end appliances. There needed to be enough space for a reasonably sized table and chairs, an island unit with extra seating, plus an area where the kids could sit and do their craft projects.

LIGHT & AIRY ‘The white units go well with the grey floor and the whole room just feels so much bigger’
W
hen we moved here five years ago, we weren’t particularly looking for a modern house, but we could see this offered us more options than the two-bedroom Victorian cottage we’d left,’ says Rachel. ‘There was an extra bedroom and the house is set over three levels. It originally had a garage and a small kitchen on the ground floor, but as there’s off-street parking, we decided to convert the garage into a playroom/study and cloakroom. That just left the problem of the kitchen. We’re both sociable and like to entertain, and my husband Mitchell is a keen cook, but the layout simply didn’t lend itself to that. There was just enough room to fit a table in, but everything felt crammed, and
URBAN STYLE you couldn’t have more than two people in the kitchen at once. So if guests were upstairs in the living room, the person cooking was stuck downstairs. An extension into the garden was the answer, giving us a space where we could all be together, plus room to entertain friends.
First steps
My father Peter was a builder and building lecturer, and he advised us on the extension – we went out the maximum three metres allowed. We wanted bifold doors across the back, which we could open up in the summer, and were also keen on an island to divide up the space, and to provide a breakfast bar for casual eating. The building work lasted for three months, finishing in January 2016, and we managed to keep

some of the appliances so we could use the kitchen up until the very last minute.
Managing the budget
I was set on buying Bosch appliances. They’re good quality and, while not cheap, will last, so they’re a sensible investment. We already had a Bosch fridge-freezer, so we chose everything else to match. I’ve got a built-in single oven, microwave and warming drawer in a handy tower, with a separate gas hob. The appliances were selected before the kitchen and, to me, were almost more important than the units. With a large chunk of our budget spent on appliances, we waited until the sales to buy the units. We found some modern, white gloss ones and got a great deal in the end, with a worktop, sink and tap included in the total cost.
Finishing touches
Deciding on the wall tiles caused the most trouble – we had a huge row about it! I had my eye on some brick-style

ones, but Mitchell wanted something that would make a statement and found these interesting mosaics in black, grey and silver. I was worried the kitchen would look like a disco, but he talked me round, and I have to say I’ve come to like them – the silver touches reflect the light perfectly. To keep with the monochrome look, we chose large grey floor tiles. They’re practical and make the space feel bigger, and before laying them, we fitted underfloor heating so the room is always cosy. With two young children, a wipe-clean tablecloth was a must. I opted for a stripe design in bright colours, which allowed me to bring in accessories in those tones, too. I can’t wait for our first dinner party now – but with Mitchell doing all the cooking!’

COFFEE MACHINE Become a barista in the comfort of your very own kitchen with our pick of the best coffee machines now available on the high street Nescafé Dolce Gusto Eclipse
De’Longhi ECP
£146, ARGOS I’m a coffee addict, pure and simple, and I love to be able to make coffee at home like they do in a cafe. The ECP machine from De’Longhi is fab – it’s a decent size without taking up loads of worktop space and it lets you channel your inner barista! With a built-in milk frother, you can have your coffee just how you like it and you can use either ground coffee or pods. Plus, it’s super simple to clean and has an easily removable drip tray. If you want to try your hand at being a coffee pro without breaking the bank, this machine is for you. Amy Hodge, Digital Content and Food Editor
£169.99, AMAZON AND CURRYS This Nescafé Dolce Gusto Eclipse machine’s fantastic design is a real talking point and it makes top-quality coffee, too! Just pop in a pod, select the size on the touchscreen display and hit go. I’m a big hot-drink fan, so a machine that produces over 40 creations, from frothy cappuccino to smooth hot chocolate, is perfect for me. I can’t wait for my next coffee! Lizzie Hudson, Editor
UNIQUE LOOK!
Lavazza Magia Plus
£89.99, LAKELAND I don’t have the largest kitchen in the world, so the fact that this coffee machine is compact makes it a winner for me. And I won’t fib and say that just because it comes in Ice White doesn’t make it go up in my estimation, too. It’s so easy to use – you just lift the lever, pop a Lavazza capsule in (of which there are hot chocolate ones – another tick from me!), and use the touchscreen to choose one of three settings. The drip tray can be moved, so it’s ideal for different-sized cups. Laurie Davidson, Homes Editor
THESE MODELS ARE ALL A WINNER IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR STYLISH DESIGN WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON A GREAT-TASTING CUP OF COFFEE
HOW TO BUY THE BEST COFFEE MACHINE WHICH MACHINE? With the popularity of good quality home-brewed coffee, there has come a surge in the variety of machines. If you’re after a quick caffeine fix, a machine using coffee pods might be best for you, as each pod contains a pre-measured
amount of coffee. Some machines will accept both pods and granules.
BUDGET Whatever your budget, there’s something to suit you. You can pick up a pod machine for under £50, while
espresso pump machines with a built-in milk frother cost upwards of £100. Bean-to-cup machines are at the higher end of the market.
WHAT ACCESSORIES? If you’re using a machine that takes ground coffee,
then a knock-out box is essential for emptying the coffee machine filter after each use. You’ll also need a jug for frothing milk, a measuring spoon and a tamper to compress the coffee in the filter of your espresso machine.

To-do list
A few things to try this month... START PREPPING FOR SPRING February is the shortest month but the weather can be damp, dark nights long, and it feels rather gloomy. Banish the winter blues by planning to bring some colour and sunshine into your life.
PLAN A ROOM MAKEOVER Start thinking about your spring DIY, considering what jobs need tackling. Set your budget, browse Pinterest for ideas and gather paint, wallpaper, fabric and flooring samples. See what tasks you can do yourself to further save money.
THINK ABOUT SUMMER HOLS Early booking discounts can cut the cost of a holiday and also give you something to look forward to when it’s cold and chilly. If you’re staying in the UK remember that bank holidays get booked up fast, so act now to bag the location of your choice.
LET IN THE GREENERY Leafy plants not only look lovely, but they increase oxygen levels, too. There’s a plant for every type of room, be it bright and sunny, shady, humid or dry. Even if you don’t think you have green fingers, there are many varieties that can cope with minimum care and attention, and should stay green for a while if you forget them!

Q
My kitchen cupboards are full of stuff, and in complete disarray! How do I store things in a way that means I can tame the chaos and also find what I want when I want it? Start by clearing absolutely everything out of the cupboards. Throw away food packets that are past their sell-by date, chipped or cracked china, and anything big and bulky that can be stored elsewhere (such as the pasta maker you only use once in a blue moon). There is often dead space above smaller items like mugs and you can gain double the storage room by adding a freestanding shelf above them, or one that will hook over the shelf and hang below. Stand jars of spices on a tiered stair so everything’s visible, and put dried ingredients and cereals into airtight containers that are designed to stack on top of one another. Use the back of cupboard doors, too – either screw on some small shelves to hold spices, hooks for cleaning brushes or fix up an over-the-door version instead. With all those extra storage solutions, keeping your cupboards tidy and well-organised should be an open-and-shut job!
Granny knows best USES FOR TOOTHPASTE
It’s not just for getting pearly whites! SPRUCE UP SHOES Dab toothpaste on the scuffed area and rub with a cloth, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
REMOVE CRAYON FROM WALL Have the kids been getting creative on your walls? Squirt a blob of non-gel toothpaste on the crayon mark and rub with a damp rag or scrubbing brush. Rinse well.
CLEAN YOUR IRON PLATE Wait until your iron has thoroughly cooled, apply toothpaste to burned-on gunk, then scrub with a rag and rinse clean afterwards.
REVIVE JEWELLERY Rub toothpaste onto burnished silver jewellery and leave overnight, then wipe clean with a soft cloth in the morning. Make diamonds shine by giving them a gentle scrub using a clean old toothbrush, toothpaste, and a little water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of toothpaste residue.

Q
My north-facing rooms feel gloomy. What neutral shades will make them lighter?
REBECCA EMERYGRAHAM, VIA TWITTER People often think painting a naturally dark room white will boost light, but this can make it feel cold. Pastels and pale greys could also leave your rooms feeling flat. Why not embrace the dark? Dramatic hues are intimate and cosy, so consider a strong navy blue or purple, then add warmth with metallic and wood touches. If you’re set on having a neutral tone, pick a warm white, pale yellow or mouse grey, so the pigment will work with what light you have. Got a burning styling question? Tweet it to our editor Lizzie @styleathomemag – she’s on hand with all the answers!
