How I like to learn a comicbook story about students with additional support needs, and the tools we can give them to improve their experience.
This is batman in his primary seven class, with the same class-mates he’s always had, in the same classroom with the same teacher hes had all year.

AS WELL AS CREATing AN OPTIMISED TIMETABLE ADAPTED TO BATMAN’S LEARNING NEEDS.

THIS IS LIKE A TREASURE HUNT!
AND ATTEND SECONDARY SCHOOL, WITH ALL NEW BUILDINGS, CLASSMATES, CLASSROOMS, AND SUBJECTS.
THE CLASS TIMETABLE BATMAN WAS GIVEN ON ENTERING SECONDARY SCHOOL IS INACCESSABLE TO HIM.
A NEW SCHOOL CAN BE CONFUSING FOR EVERY STUDENT, BUT BATMAN
HAS FASD, AND THIS MAKES UNDERSTANDING AND NAVIGATING HIS NEW ENVIRONMENT VERY DIFFICULT. SIGNS WERE PUT UP OUTSIDE EACH BUILDING TO FURTHER BRING BATMANS SCHOOL MAP TO LIFE, AND HELP OTHER NEW STUDENTS FIND THEIR WAY AROUND THE SCHOOL.
IT’S MONOTONE AND TEXT-HEAVY. IT MIXES NUMBERS AND LETTERS AND READS FROM SIDE-TO SIDE. IT ALL GETS JUMBLED UP INSIDE BATMAN’S HEAD.
WITHOUT An accessable TIMETABLE IN THIS NEW SCHOOL, BATMAN GETS LOST EASILY, MAKING HIM LATE FOR CLASS AND DISRUPTING HIS LEARNING.
DIRECTIONS INSIDE THE HALLS REASURRED BATMAN THAT HE WAS ON THE RIGHT PATH, AND HE NO LONGER GOT CONFUSED ABOUT WHICH CLASSROOM WAS HIS, BECAUSE HE COULD SEE each one was simply labled alphabetically.
these small adaptations to batman’s tools and environment enabled him to navigate the school confidently and independently. if they were adopted as permenant features in the school culture and timetable, who knows how many students this might help...

how might other students with additional support needs be involved in future improvements of the education system, if they could share their experiences, like batman has been able to share his?
the number of students with an identified additional support NEED HAS RISEN BY OVER 92% OVER THE LAST 9 YEARS. In 2020, 32.3% of the student population in scotland had an IDENTIFIED ASN. In the school i’m working with, there are many departments which work to support students with asn. many of these give students a safe space to feel calm and to work on academic and social skills.

there are factors which impact each teachers ability to provide engaging and inclusive lessons for every student...
and there are so many resources that need to be in place for schools and local authorites to be able to provide the appropriate support.
whether this be through students’ work being made in to posters and put up around the school, or brought into meetings, the aim is to invite conversation and better address issues around inclusive practice and resources.
so how can we give students like batman a voice, and give teachers and authorities who are less likely to engage, an incentive to listen.
and presenting education through batman’s eyes allowed me to create engaging work that could communicate the value in improving his experience.
through talking to teachers and staff, i understand that many students with asn are able to communicate clearly about how they like to learn. batman could explain to me how and why he was able to engage in his favourite classes,
these departments could incorporate learning activities which allow students to illustrate aspects of their school experience which are significant to them.
simple learning tools like this could be used to bring the student’s voice in to decisions that directly affect them...
